Description of Work: I provided specific information regarding the design and the person drawing it went their own direction. I'd already designed the structure and needed only working drawings. Due the contract I was left on the hook for the entire amount despite having nothing in hand to show for it. They had their reasons for not drawing what I wanted, but Im the client. Total waste of money for me. I hope your experience is better.

Response from Shepphird Associates
Sometimes a client's requests structures that do not meet certain planning regulations, building code requirements, and constructability concerns. These were all the case in this instance. We attempted to reconcile these legal and practical concerns so that the client could build something akin to what he wanted, but he could not get over his "design" and insisted that he was right. While we applauded him in the use of a digital software program to show us what his vision of the project was, his design was just not workable for the concerns mentioned above. When confronted with this reality he decided to approach the regulatory bodies for approval on his own and I agreed to assist with the working drawings if he actually got approval for his "vision" of things. A year goes by with no contact from him and then I get this skewed review in this forum. Strange. From the language he uses to describe our relationship with him, he seems to indicate that we did not listen to him as the client. On the contrary, it was he who did not want to listen to us the design and building professionals, but to his point, we are always seeking to improve communication skills and methods. In terms of the financials, when we departed, he insisted on only paying only a portion of the invoice for services previously rendered. His wife with whom we contracted the project with and who actually owns the house was altogether pleasant.

Great. He solved my problem.
Description of Work: I had a problem with dry rot and needed a solution. He was quick, knew what he was talking about and proposed a practical and cost effective solution. Drew a chart for the contractor. I felt confident that he was objective, so I could count on him rather than on the contractor who might have had an interest in doing the fix in a certain way.

THANKS A BUNCH
Description of Work: I NEEDED SOME DRAFTING DONE, WE ARE BUILDING A GARAGE FROM THE GROUND UP AND HAD TO GET A PERMIT FOR ELECTRICAL AND 1/2 BATH. I CALLED WANTING TO GET AN ESTIMATE FOR HOW MUCH THIS WOULD COST. THE ARCHITECT I SPOKE TO WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL AND INFORMATIVE. HE WENT THROUGH THE DIFFERENT BUILDING CODE CLASSIFICATIONS WITH ME TO SEE WHICH SCENERIO CAN MAKE ME GET OUT THIS SITUATION. I WAS VERY SURPRIZED THAT SOMEBODY SHARED INFO WITHOUT GIVING ME A BILL.

Our home is older, built in the 1930's. We remodeled our kitchen last year and added heavy granite on our raised foundation. I wanted to know if the foundation was still in good shape. I found Will on Angie's list, and he had such glowing reports I had to call him, even though he was in Los Angeles and we are in Southern Orange County. He listened to my concerns, and suggested calling a contractor he occasionally worked with to come and check out our house and, if needed, do the repairs at the same time. Shepphird Associates does not do the actual construction. I left a few messages for the contractor but he was unavailable (turns out his wife was having a baby!). In the meantime I contacted a local structural engineering company that came out and told us our entire foundation needed to be rebuilt at an estimated cost of $20,000 - $40,000. This left us very worried. This particular contractor did not follow up with a formal bid or report. So I called Will back and asked him if he would come out and give us his informal opinion. At this point I felt I did not trust the local structural company's assessment, since they would be the people actually doing the work. Will came out that very afternoon, crawled under the house, and then drew us some rough diagrams of what was under there and what should be strengthened. He said there was no need to worry, and the house had stood the test of time, and we were in basically decent shape. We were able to have a GC come out and do the repairs using the sketches. He was very professional, and a very nice person. I would highly recommend him.
Description of Work: Will Shepphird came to assess our older home's raised foundation.

He came out very promptly. He listened to what my project was going to be. He was very honest about how much this was going to cost. He helped me with flexing my budget. I would recommend him just in the end it was too expensive.
Description of Work: He came out to my house to give me an estimate with a master suite addition.

Mr. Shepphird drove over 2 hours round trip to meet me at my mother's home. He arrived promptly, was professional, and spent significant over an hour listening to what we wanted to accomplish with a complete renovation of our home. He made useful and really interesting suggestions as to how we could solve certain architectural and fundamental structural problems, and considered everything from how other homes in the neighborhood looked to how we could recapture our renovation costs if we decided to resell the home. He spent over an hour explaining to my mother what he felt were her best options and what decision process she should follow. He treated her like she was his own mother, and impressed me with his genuine concern for her comfort, his desire to exceed her expectations, and his respect for money she would be investing in the renovation. He even advised her to save her money and not remodel. How many people do you know who with that much integrity?
Description of Work: Out of over a dozen contractors, architects, and structural engineers I have met with this past year in an effort to completely renovate my mother's house, NO ONE holds a candle to Will Shepphird. Mr. Shepphird's honest assessment of the work that needed to be performed, the actual costs associated, and a realistic time frame for completing the work were head and shoulders above everyone else's. He demonstrated exceptional integrity and creativity in considering possible solutions to all of the structural and cosmetic/architectural aspects of the job. Also, he is one of very, very few people in his industry who is accredited as a P.I., A.I.A., and LEED. Thus he sees how various aspects of a job are interrelated, and saves a client the expense and hassle of having to hire multiple people (a contractor, architect, and structural engineer) for the same work. I'd recommend him to anyone who appreciates honesty and has a discerning eye, and will hire him when funds permit.

I spoke with Mr. Sheppird on the phone. He was warm, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. His price for the inspection would have been $250, however, he spent several minutes on the phone with me, explaining exactly how my husband and I could crawl into our attic space and find out for ourselves, whether or not the wall was structural, without spending a dime. Not only was his price the most reasonable of all the people I spoke to, he talked us out of the job, by teaching us what to do on our own. We sent him a $25 check for good measure, how often do you meet people like that these days?
Description of Work: I called to schedule an inspection of a wall in our kitchen, to find out whether or not it was a load-bearing structural wall.
