+ 0 moreAfter interviewing several architects we chose to work with Shepphird Associates. The scope of the project was on large scale. Complete build cost/budget was close to $1.0 million. I would not enter into any agreement with this much money on the line and the fact that this was my home. Will and his team were outstanding to work with. They are the utmost professionals. They were involved in every step of the process. Assisted and or managed the process from permits, lot line adjustments, interviewing contractors and vendors. Would highly recommend and retain their services again.

+ -1 moreWe had hired another engineer to provide expertise and help meeting the city requirements on a large multi-deck construction project. As the project progressed, we became concerned that this engineer was not competent and was not doing all of the things he was charging us for. We became so concerned that we hired Mr. Shepphird to audit the work of the original engineer. Mr. Shepphird was very knowledgeable, competent, and he responded quickly. He found that the original engineer had net even done the calculations required. We used the reports from Shepphird Associates to confront the original engineer with evidence to back up our suspicions that he was not providing careful professional advice and oversight on our project. The next time we need an engineer, we will go directly to Mr. Shepphird. He is not only highly professional and competent. He is a man of his word and very pleasant to work with.

+ -1 moreIt did not go well. Mr. Shepphird advertised his services for jobs both large and small. I related to him that we wanted to accomplish the reconstruction of a front wall with garage in a way that would later not get in the way of adding a second story to the structure so that would be allowed. We went around several times with his proposed contract which struck me as sort of open ended and not product oriented but eventually I agreed to do that. He had estimate that his design services would, maybe, approach $12,000, which was somewhat more than I was comfortable with. But, eventually I agreed to proceed on that basis. After he had billed me for approximately $6,000 and not accomplished any deliverables thus far, it became apparent that we were going to spend a lot more money than I was prepared to spend on a lot of tasks that I thought were not very productive. We had some very terse exchanges. He apparently believes that he needs to proceed as he desires. Most of the money apparently was spent on a survey of the yard and other surrounding properties which I thought was unnecessary and unneeded for the kind of planning that we needed. We eventually parted company after I paid a little less than $3,800, which was completely lost money for me. My advice to others is that he seems to want to work in the way that he wants to; it may or may not be consistent with what their initial perceptions and own needs are. He probably is not prepared to be overly responsive to small jobs that have cost constraints. I'm sure he is a capable and respected professional but he does have a particular mode of working that may not suit everybody's needs. The only product I got was a site sketch and what he did prepare was competent.

Description of Work: We engaged Will's services to perform a structural inspection and assess the grading and slope condition of a home we recently purchased (the work was done while we were in escrow). The slope assessment was needed as the home sits on a hillside. Will was very responsive to our need for a quick response (due to the aforementioned escrow condition). Will kept the agreed appointment and performed a very thorough inspection of the structure of the home, even going so far as to climb into the attic with the HVAC contractor to check out the framing! Prior to his visit, Will researched the land and neighborhood and advised us that the property was in good shape from a geological perspective. Will inspected the grounds and offered many helpful suggestions regarding potential slope, grading, and drainage issues. Inside the home, Will pointed out many features of the architecture that we didn't notice and made other suggestions for improvements and potential renovations. We chose to work with Will, in part, because he gave us some very valuable information about a different home that we were considering, and that information prompted us to "dig deeper". We decided not to purchase the other home, in large part based on Will's advice, sparing us from a huge disappointment - and Will gave us that advice for free!

+ 1 moreThe design process was fast and thorough. Matt and Tim explored and documented the structural elements of the house. First doing as-built drawings, then exploring the foundation structure to see if we could remove the soffits and use stacked walls to run HVAC ducts. Then we went to plan check and have a permit-ready set of drawings on the first go-around. No structural changes or recalculations were required which was quite nice. Then Tim assisted us in redesigning the kitchen and master suite. We expanded the closets, and rearranged and reduced the number of doors. Then they prepared the elevation drawings to match our discussions. We couldn't ask for a better team. We are now waiting for contractor bids that Will is going to review and compare to help us select the pick of the litter. While we have not completed the project, Will Shepphird has consistently attended to our questions and concerns is the most personable and professional manner. He has been our advocate throughout the process. His team listens well and prepared preliminary designs for finishes and lighting that nearly nailed it on the first round. If the building process is as smooth as the design process we will be very very happy.
Description of Work: Will Shepphird and his team (Tim and Matt) provided absolutely first rate services related to the design and engineering for the remodeling of our newly purchased home. They prepared as-built drawings, assisted us with the details of kitchen and master suite remodel, and directed us in the selection of lighting throughout our house. They prepared architectural and engineering (structural and foundation) drawings for the city plan check and passed through on the first time. The additional drawings for the finishings and kitchen design were well done and have consistently impressed the contractors who have reviewed them during the bidding process. Their design will enable us to remove soffits to raise ceilings in our downstairs hallway, kitchen, bathroom and office. Their clear thinking created mechanical drawings to enable us to redo ducting through stacked walls serving the downstairs areas. We are able to transform the flow of the house to make it more open and spacious without adding any additional space.

The first time (Thursday), I spoke with a gentleman who said that he'd pass along my message to their SE. No call. The second time (Monday), I called and received the company voicemail to which I left a detailed message. No call back. The third time (Wednesday), I left a message with the same gentleman who took my call the first time. He recognized me and assured me that he'd pass along my message to their SE, Will. No call back. Today is Friday. I dislike leaving negative reviews, especially without ever having worked with this company. Based on other Angie's List reviews I was looking forward to working with this company. However, after three attempts and not even a call back, I'm very disappointed. Response: I never received a voicemail message. It's possible that a wrong number was called (message taker issue or misdial by contractor). I left my mobile number on all three messages. However, even if I did receive the first message, my last two call(back)s weren't returned.

He took the time to investigate all the particular concerns we had as well as do a general structural assessment. We're very glad we had him come out for an inspection.

He provided invaluable advice, introduced us to excellent contractors and subcontractors, and, most importantly, brought attention to detail and an eye for good design to our remodel project. He took the time to thoroughly understand what kind of home would make us happy and comfortable. His ideas were great. He took our vague opinions and preferences and expressed them as a coherent design and renovation plan. He was there for every detail, like selection of materials and finishes, as well as midstream adjustments to make the end product the best it could be. We were very glad for his efforts.

+ -1 moreMy experience with Will was WONDERFUL. I live in a mid century cantilevered stilt house that is very structurally complicated. Will took a lot of time to look at the whole structure to understand how everything was working before advising on a cement problem in the carport. He spent over an hour with me and discussed a lot of the long term preservation issues he saw. Will has a refined architectural eye and was attune to our goals of preserving the historic nature of our house. I plan to work with Will in the future as projects on our home continue. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Will looked at a cantilevered wooden structure supporting a cement pad carport and advised on possible repair solutions from an engineering standpoint.

+ 0 moreThey gave us three different quotes from doing the minimum to actually replacing the whole garage. They were rather major quotes. We haven't decided to do the work yet but it is quite possible that we might use them. We haven't gotten any other quotes yet. The price was really high but we haven't compared it to any others so we are not sure if it is really high. We felt confident in their ability to fix the garage.
Description of Work: We got an estimate from Shepphird Associates to replace the foundation of our garage and they would have rebuilt the bottom portion of the garage walls. Our garage is on a really bad foundation and it leaks all around so they would have repaired all of that.

He evaluated them from the interior and exterior, and provided us with several options, including the unvarnished truth. + 2 moreCalled Will and explained what information I wanted. He came out to the property and sized up what can be done with some approximate costs involved and his fees. He had great ideas and clearly knew what he was talking about. He advised against expanding a balcony area without further structural support and came up with some alternatives. I'm still in the early stages and not ready to start any work, but more knowledgeable about the home's potential. I'm a firm believer in getting the opinion of an expert, not just hiring a handyman who wants to start tearing down walls. If you are building a spec home or doing a remodel, I can't see any reason why you would not want to get someone like Will involved in the project if just to look at it and provide a opinion or a outright hire for the job.

+ 0 moreI had absolutely no idea how to go about resolving or dealing with our potential problem. A friend of mine recommended Mr. Shepphirds firm because he had worked with him before. (My friend is a contractor) Mr. Shepphird is a professional through and through! He could have taken advantage of the situation and I would never have known. Instead, he set forth contractual terms that encompassed drawing out an entire new set of blue prints complete with "structural changes" for a 3 story apartment complex at a set price BUT also explained that due to the nature of our possible problem, he wanted to propose a second case scenario that would entail ONLY BILLING for hours actually spent on the project IFall that happened was background and a question/answer with the case manager for the City of Los Angeles. Our first meeting until completion of the job was 2 weeks and as it turned out, our "large project" was not necessary due to extenuating circumstances. I can't say enough nice things about Mr. Shepphird and his firm! Our situation could have gone either direction and the fact that he was just fine with finding out the answers regardless of the financial benefit to him was truly refreshing in todays market place. GOD BLESS PEOPLE LIKE MR. SHEPPHIRD! I highly recommend his firm and will absolutely use them again!
Description of Work: Mr. Shepphird was hired to look into a structural engineering problem at an apartment building that I manage. This project for Shepphird Associates alone had the potential to be upwards of $7,000 worth of business for their firm. As it turned out, Mr. Shepphird was able to resolve the situation for substantially less money due to factors outside of our control. His firm reviewed blueprints, pulled permits and discussed our situation with a Case Manager for the City of Los Angeles.

+ 1 moreIn the conversation he informed me as to what he would need to do to find out if the wall was weight bearing and he asked if this was a condo or a house. When I told him that it was a condo, he advised against doing it as this would open me up to litigation, if any cracks appeared in the future in any other unit, even if it was totally unrelated to the remodel. I very much appreciated his telling me that, as I had not thought of it and so I decided not to proceed with making an offer on the unit. I was very impressed with his knowledge and his helpfulness and honesty. He actually went against his self interest by providing me the information before he came out so that did not use his service. I wish there were more people like him.
Description of Work: I called to talk to the company regarding moving the kitchen of a condo I was considering. I wanted to have him come out and let me know if the walls were weight bearing and if it could be done.

+ -1 moreHe is a structural engineer and an architect. He told me that the hill was not falling and told me what to do. He quoted me a ridiculously high price and said that he knew that the price was high, but you are going to have to involve city inspectors and all kinds of things. I told him that he was out of his mind and also said let the hill fall and he told me not to worry it won’t fall. The price he quoted was $20,000. I thought that he was extremely knowledgeable and professional and he was going to do it the right way. I don’t think he was out of line with his charges and it was just that I could not afford it, but he did give me an alternative.
Description of Work: Shepphird Associates came out in August two years ago and I wanted him to look at some cracking that I had because I live on the hillside.

+ 1 moreWe initially contacted Will by e-mail to see if our project was something they would take on (a lot of structural engineers aren't interested in small residential problems like ours). He assured us that it was, but was upfront about his availability due to being out of town. We contacted him by phone after he returned to town as he requested and he was able to come out that same day. He looked over our ceiling, climbed up into the attic and made some recommendations for our contractor. He also offered to come back once the contractor had the ceiling open to do calculations for the repair work. Once the contractor had the ceiling open, we called to have him come back out but he was at another site. We ended up e-mailing him photos of the open ceiling and he called back and had a long phone consultation with our contractor. He was able to give the contractor a clear enough picture of the scope of work that our contractor was able to gather supplies and set up prep work and they agreed to meet first thing the next morning. Everyone was on time for the meeting of the minds which lasted almost an hour. Will provided drawings, calculations, and instructions as the seriousness of the problem and therefore the scope of the work expanded. Will was consistently personable, professional, and knowledgeable. We felt from the very first meeting that we were in good hands. He was reliable and responsive and managed to prioritize his schedule and use other means of communication (digital photos, phone calls) to remain present to our little project when called away to other things so that our project did not lose time. We sincerely hope to not have this kind of problem again, but if we did we would be sure to call Will.
Description of Work: We had large cracks spreading in our ceiling and down the attached walls. We needed someone to tell us if it was a supporting beam problem or a foundation problem. Will performed an initial inspection to give us an idea of the scope of the work, consulted via phone with our contractor once the ceilings and walls were open and then came back and met with the contractor to provide drawings and calculations when it turned out that there was going to be foundation work involved.

Description of Work: “I contacted Will Shepphird after locating his firm on Angie’s list while in search of architectural or Design/Build firms to interview for a fairly substantial remodel project of our primary residence. His profile attracted us because of his dual skills and experience as both architect and structural engineer, as well as his LEEDS certification. Prior comments were very positive, and I can only reinforce that impression after meeting with Mr. Shepphird and discussing our project at great length. Mr. Shepphird was punctual, polite and most professional. He was clearly attentive to ideas and concerns I had regarding the project. It was clear he had a genuine interest in the nature of the project, and was quite capable of dealing with the scope we had in mind. Subsequent to our meeting he provided a very detailed and clear proposal for the project, which was certainly well within the range of the other proposals we considered with respect to phases of design, development, implementation and budget. Mr. Shepphird followed up appropriately with, I might add, absolutely NO pressure, but only genuine interest in our state of readiness to proceed on our project. As a consumer of services, anyone reading this will appreciate how much this consideration is valued and appreciated. In summary, I would strongly advise anyone setting out on a remodel, construction or build project, which might require architectural and/or engineering expertise, to include Mr. Shepphird’s firm during the exploratory phases of their project. In the end, we were not able to engage Mr. Shepphird’s firm to complete our project only due to some unforeseen circumstances.
