The technician was polite and easy to understand. and it didn't cost me more than the estimate.
Description of Work: Pointed out that a previous repair person had shut off the AC to the unit. Inspected the heater in the attic to make sure it didn't need service. Recommended insulation and and gave me an estimate. I got a good education in heating cost reduction.

I had problems installing my Nest thermostat, which requires 24v -- more than standard thermostats. Nest tech support told me to contact an installer on their list and promised the installer would not charge more than $119. I compared Nest's list to Angie's, and UMC was the only one with straight A grades (at that time). Yurik arrived on time -- very nice guy. He looked at the thermostat and then went under the house to check the furnace. He told me that he had to rewire from thermostat back to furnace. He said that the dampers used to create the two-zone system were improperly wired. He was surprised that they still worked. He also said that there were some code issues with wires touching the furnace that should have been in conduits. He said he would send me an estimate by email. Next day, I received the email, with an estimate for $789 -- $670 more than what Nest promised me. I called Nest tech support to complain. They apologized and sent out their second level installer from an HVAC company not listed on Angie's List. The new installer tested the current of all the wires at the thermostat (which UMC didn't do) and checked out the furnace and the wiring from it to the thermostat. The new guy found that 1. I had sufficient voltage to run the Nest with the existing wiring (the green and blue wires were reversed); 2. the dampers were wired "cleverly" using "out-of-the-box thinking"; 3. there were no code issues because the wires touching the furnace did not require conduits. The new guy said that the $789 UMC quoted me was a very good price for all the work he wanted to do -- but none of it was necessary. New guy finished in less than an hour. Nest paid for the work. Nest thermostat works fine.

i went with UMC for the job after receiving several bids. they were in the middle in terms of cost, but i liked what the owner, Yurik had to say and his guy who did the work, Victor is a god guy too. The work was completed on time, on budget, and our house was left in good condition. My issue is that now we are in the middle of winter and using the heater more often, it has become very apparent that the system is far from balanced. Some rooms heat up very quickly while others aren't getting nearly enough heat. I called the company and Yurik came out to examine our issues. He pointed out several things that the crew had done and that he would have done differently. He is recommending that some of the work be re-done and some additional things be done as well. I wish the work had been done more efficiently the first time, but I understand that sometimes things happen. My final verdict on this company will depend on how they handle things from here. If they stand by their work and come back in a prompt fashion to complete the job as agreed, I will update this review to reflect that. As I said earlier, I really like Yurik and Victor and expect that they will get this taken care of. *** 02/14/13 UPDATE *** They came back a few weeks ago and made some adjustments. Things are working much better now. I appreciate that they came back and got it right. B+
Description of Work: I needed to have my 2500 sq/ft house re-ducted after the previous owner did a terrible DIY job. We also moved the heating and fan unit in the attic to a more central location.

Service person took some of our system apart and did not replace it as found. He then improperly diagnosed the problem and said it either would be a $2,500 or $7,500 system replacement. I called another company for a second opinion and they came out and cleaned up the mess left by UMC. No repair or replacement needed. No more leaking.
Description of Work: Checked out leaking in heater closet, from coil. Flushed out the line.

I arrived at the address where Owners were waiting for me at that address. Owner of the property told me there is a water leakage. After thrilled investigation I found out condensate drain line is cloth. I have told the owner I will clean it if it opens up that means it fixed if it’s not we will see what is the problem. Owner gave me an ok to proceed. I Have give them a price $97.00 and $50.00 for nitrogen. I used nitrogen to blow out the drain line. Drain line did not open at first time, I have tried the second time and it did open and I have showed to the owner and I put water in drain pipe and water did go so the drain line was open second test was to put a water inside of a drip pen to test the drain line draining ok, still there was a water leaking from back of the evaporator, but Owner saw that. And these are what I have told her about evaporator “Drip pan must be rusted”. She asked me to check the system to see if everything else was working. I found out that the return duct size was small and t-start was too far from return intake. With that size of a small duct return there was no way that unit will operate properly “something was wrong”. Then I went under neat the house crawled space I found out that it was taking air from outside under neat the house outside air and pushing air inside the house which is state code is outlawed. I came back and told her all the problems and there was more. I was almost to my 55 min into the job I had 10 min to go since she didn’t wanted to pay more than $97.00 she stopped me right there and said:” Anyway since we are going to change the unit leave everything as is and give me a price for a new unit” for that reason I didn’t charge them for nitrogen knowing that we are going to replace the whole unit. . She stopped me and did not let me to put back evaporator cover, (cover penal and furnace cover penal). . She asked me about new installation and about different units. I gave her all the information, for brand new evaporator and condenser upgrading to R410A or replacing evaporator only leaving R22 system which I did not recommend so as my company. She asked to give her several options for new installation, which we did. We gave them and 4 Options to go from there. Answer #1 Nitrogen is a gas that we purchase and refill that is $50 every time we use and we didn’t charge for that. Since you told us to give you a price for new installation we didn’t charge you for Nitrogen. You had to pay us $50 more. Which he didn’t charge you for that Answer #2 99% of old evaporators they came with metal drip pan. After 5 to 7 years starts rusting. So assume old unit like these it is obvious that drip pan was rusted since the house was build in 1939 and I don’t have to look inside. Answer #3 as a customer you have to provide a copy of the Angies list coupon that’s how we honor discount. First of all the rental property is under her husband’s name. And she is the Angies list member how we keep a track on that. That’s not our job. As she said on the invoice we don’t have both address we have only the address were the job was done.

I made the appointment a few days in advance and both the woman who scheduled the call and I were very clear that the appointment was to take place between 9-11 this morning. At 11:15 this morning they had neither arrived nor called, so I called them. The gentleman that answered the phone said that our appointment was from 11-1. When I told him that was incorrect he argued with me and insisted that the time on the schedule was correct and that I must be wrong because they do not make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes and I would have been very forgiving if he had apologized for any confusion or taken any stance other than that he was right and I, the potential customer, was wrong. Who wants to do business with a firm that has that attitude from the start? I will just work with another company on Angie's List.

Our record indicates in two places on scheduling book and on the computer that the appointment time was between 11-1. We do not give Saturdays or Sundays 9-11 appointments we usually keep those ours for emergency calls ONLY not for estimates. we did even took picture of the appointment time and information and send it to customer saying that the appointment time was between 11-1. down the road if they made that mistake than that is not our problem. We did indicate the time and since we do this every single day we are sure that the mistakes its not from our point. http://www.facebook.com/yurik.khudanyan we will post our records in there.

I thought they were incredibly good. It's an old house so there were a couple of unforeseen complications and they dealt with them really well. We called back because everything didn't seem to run as it should and they came back right away to fix it. They were here until 10pm one night during a heat wave. They were not the cheapest quote we got but they did stick to their quote; it's also a pretty complicated system because each blower in each room has its own set of electronics and they knew how to handle it.
Description of Work: They put in a new heat pump, heating and cooling multi-zone system.

Yuri, of UMC was great from start to finish. He came late in the evening in the middle of the intense heat wave here in the east valley, although he had many calls to make as he knew we had lost our air conditioning. Based on the manual J test Yuri performed, he could have gone with a 3 ton condenser or a more expensive 3.5 ton. He suggested the less expensive 3 ton, believing that to be sufficient for our needs, thereby saving me about $600. Once we decided on the equipment Yuri's crew came and did the work quickly and efficeintly. They hired a crane to remove the old condenser unit from our roof and install the new one. The A/C work took a day. They also rerouted the air ducts, making the pathway much more efficient. Tthis took part of a day. The work was completed well within the estimated time frame. There was a problem with low frequencey noise and vibration after the new condenser was installed on our roof. Yuri's guy came back and installed special noise-reduction pads under the unit -- the noise problem went away. A Burbank inspector looked at Yuri's work and signed off on it. I paid an independent outfit to come and test our ducts for leaks after Yuri was done with his work. We passed easily. Yuir helped me order new filters online because that was a cheaper way to go then him buying them for me. When the filters arrived I called Yuri and he came and installed the filters, no extra charge. We now have an efficient and effective air condtioning system. Yuri cares about his work and his customers. I would recommend him and use him again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: UMC performed a manual J analysis of my home's heating/cooling requirements. Based on that anaylsis they replaced my old, worn out A/C condenser with a new Lennox 3.0 ton, 13 SEER model. They replaced my coils and copper piping with new equipment. They also rerouted and insulated my air ducts in my attic to improve efficiencey and reduce cooling loss.

UMC saved me a service fee and a whole lot of hassle with some help over the phone. My A/C stopped blowing cold air and I needed someone to fix the same day. I called other companies but they weren"t able to come out the same day. The other companies had they're voicemails taking messages but the person at UMC actually answered the phone and was willing to make an appointment that same day within a 2 hour window and a call before coming over. He explained that they would have to charge a service fee of about $90.00 whether the work or estimate took 5 minutes or an hour but the fee would go toward the repair if needed which is standard. In his explanation of what's involved in the trouble shooting, he mentioned that sometimes the problem can be as simple as flipping the circuit breaker.I kept my appointment but decided to check for myself just in case. Sure enough, the circuit breaker in the main panel of my house was tripped. I flipped it back on and the A/C unit started pumping cold air. I called to cancel my appointment and he was still very helpful and suggested that the cooling coils were probably dirty which was creating an extra strain on the unit which popped the circuit. He suggested I have a maintenance service for about $200.00 to check for other problems and clean everything, which is a good idea and I probably will, but for now I gently hosed the cooling coils that surround the A/C unit of all the dirt that had accumulated. Thanks again for your help and when the time comes, I'll be sure to give you my business.

He did a great job.It took him longer than he thought it would because once he fixed one part, he'd find another part that was broken. I didn't want a replacement, and he didn't push me on that score. He just communicated all the issues and was open, honest, and professional. Great job!
Description of Work: The unit was a big mess. The freon had all leaked out, the condenser fan was broken, and one of the other fans was off balance.Oil had leaked out all over the place. The motor sounded like a volcano was about to occur, and blew only hot air.

Turned on Air Conditioner and had a bad "burnt" smell. Called on 9-6-12 & owner (Yurik) talked to me on the phone and answered all my questions. Said the service call was $97 whether it took them 1 min to 1 hours to diagnosis the problem. I like that he spells out everything on the phone so there is no surprises. The best thing is he sent someone over the very next morning. He sent a technician named Victor. Victor had to go up and down the stairs to the roof where the unit is located. He came up and down several times and would tell me what the problem was and even asked me to go up and showed me the 2 parts he needed to replace. Very, very honest people because I was really scared I would need to have the whole unit replaced since it was the same unit that came with the condo and it is about 15 years old. We have had some bad experiences with repair work. But, these guys where awesome. So with the service charge and parts & labor it was $337 to drive from Burbank to Los Angeles and fix our unit. They also work on other appliances so if I ever need them for other repairs I now have the right company to call. Can't say enough good things about this business.

Yurik rescued me from the Valley heat!!! I placed the call to this company at about 7:00 last night, when many other places were closed. I was able to schedule a convenient time for today, between 5 and 7 p.m. He actually arrived a little early, which caused him to have to wait for me (I had called back earlier today and specifically told the scheduler I would be about 10 minutes past 5:00, sorry about that Yurik!). He diagnosed the problem right away, took the time to show me what the issue was, and offered maintenance tips. He went out of his way to make sure the work was completed ...my outside faucet doesn't work but he really wanted to make sure the unit was cleaned, since it was very dirty. I really appreciate the responsiveness and professionalism!

Great experience, Yurik came over assessed the problem fixed it and was off.
Description of Work: Yurik came out and fixed my over 40 year old A/C unit. Another hvac guy came out at the request of American Home Shield and was clueless to the workings of this unit. Yurik was punctual and professionally assessed the work required to fix the problem. My compressor fan's electric motor was going bad and it needed replaced. After replacing the fan's motor we also found that the compressor was going off and came back on more often than it should have. Yuri told me that this can cause the compressor to wear out and from there a series of checks (freon pressure, valves, etc) happened. I am very satisfied with the work he did and, for sure, I will contract him again for future work.

We had persevered for quite a few years with 3 heating ducts that were wrapped with exposed insulation (the gross, fuzzy stuff) in our garage. We had been told by the contractor that it had to be that way. We live in an area that has a lot of undeveloped land, which means we are in a constant struggle to keep rats, etc. out of our house and garage. It didn't help that this insulation was attractive to rodents (yech). After looking at photos of our duct work, Yurich at UMC Appliance Repair told me that he could cover the insulation with neat, tidy "bubble wrap" material, consolidate the 3 ducts into 1 and make the heating system flow more evenly (it never really had). Victor came out within a few days, measured, and thoroughly discussed the project. He came back within two business days, after the ducts were custom made to complete the job. Victor was thorough and polite. He and his assistant cleaned up when finished and made sure we were satisfied before they left. We are very happy with the job Victor of UMC Appliance Repair did. We would use this company again. They are thorough and very prompt to respond. We had no trouble contacting Yurich by phone or email.
Description of Work: Victor at UMC Appliance Repair rebuilt the exposed heating duct system in our garage. He replaced the exposed insulation with the cleaner bubble wrap type, replaced the 3 inefficient ducts with one, adjusted the flow of the system and serviced the furnace.

In turning on my A/C system for the first time of the season, I found the system not cooling. As UMC installed the system, I called in the problem. Yurik was genuinely concerned with getting the A/C running again, and was very accommodating. He came the same afternoon! Finding that there was no coolant in the system, he started looking for the potential leak. This turned into a real puzzle, as all the places where leaks usually develop were not leaking. After a lot of detective work, Yurik did find a leak, in what is probably the toughest part of the unit to access. He had to dismantle the whole cooling part of the HVAC unit to find one small piece of pipe where a leak had developed. Somehow he was able to weld the repair, though it seemed very difficult to me, and perform some preventive adjustments to the unit so it wouldn't cause the same kind of leak in the future. Yurik then painstakingly reassembled everything, which required more welding, gluing, testing, charging, and although it was getting later and later he methodically finished the job. This problem arose due to a manufacturing defect, and Yurik did the work honoring his warranty. It has become harder and harder to find good professionals - thus the need for a website such as this one. Even more rare is the professional who continues to exceed expectations year after year. I have been using UMC for a few years now and Yurik is consistently hard working, honest, fair, and thoroughly professional.
Description of Work: I called UMC as my A/C unit was not cooling at all. Yurik promptly came and went to work to find the problem. He was successful in finding the leak in a very unusual, difficult to access place. Yurik had to basically dismantle the whole HVAC unit to remove the leaking unit, which he then was skillfully able to repair. Although it was getting very late, he stayed as long as it took to have everything back in place and up and running again, so that my family can have cool air again.

Description of Work: I used UMC for heating and A/C service. They replaced a relay in my heater and changed the filters.

This was the best experience I've had on Angie's list thus far. Yuri responded to me the same day of inquiry, provided contact information, and called 30 minutes before arrival. He arrived promptly and was professional in every way. Kind, considerate, and respectful of my two dogs as well. You could tell he really cared about making sure I was happy. The best part...he fixed my unit within an hour and all of my problems were solved. I realize there are other posts to them giving them an "F" rating, but you have to remember that they are not miracle workers and can only do what they can. People here in this city need to get over themselves and realize that these guys work very hard. And Yuri was an "A" in every aspect. Well worth the $97 I paid to get things done quickly, correctly, and reputably. I work with the public in my job as well so I am more than happy to give them an A rating and recommend them for any needs you may have.

My heating and air-conditioning unit completely shut down. I called UMC Appliance Repair Co. (Who did previous work a year ago), and talked to the owner Yuri. Yuri came out the same day, quickly diagnosed the problem and gave me an estimate as to the repair. I agreed to the price and the next day Yuri, after picking up the replacement part, returned to my home and completed the repair. He was very professional and explained to me exactly what he was doing and why it was being done. He was extremely thorough and completely tested the system after completing the work so that both he and I were satisfied that everything was working correctly. In fact, he did a complete cleaning and checking of the furnace which was over and above the actual repair. He spent far longer on the job then the installation labor costs that he had quoted me the day before. Nevertheless, he charged me only what he had estimated and nothing more. I was very impressed with his professionalism, his thoroughness and his attention to detail. I felt the price I paid was very fair and I was very pleased with the work done. I would definitely use Yuri again in the future.
Description of Work: Replaced burnt out computer board on 12-year-old Lennox furnace. Completely tested system and changed filter on furnace.

My favorite kind of repairman/contractor: the guy who says you don't need to do anything until there is an actual problem. My new favorite HVAC guy: Yurik at UMC. Never again am I going to respond to a postcard in the mail offering a preseason check at a discount price, which turned out to be a come on for overpriced air conditioner replacement. No need to, I will just remember to call UMC next May for a checkup.
Description of Work: After another HVAC guy did a preseason check on our air conditioner and said we needed a new system for almost $9,000, we decided to get a second opinion. We found UMC on Angies List. Yurik came out the same day to have a look. His conclusion: it's not broken, don't replace it. For now it's fine, eventually it will need to be replaced. And when we do need another one, his guess on cost was a third of what the other guy was asking. I expected to pay a service fee but he waived the charge. No question that when we do need a repair or replacement we will call UMC.
