Description of Work: Inspected home AC system, cleaned filters, recommended acid. Washing of cooling fins for additional $197.00 I accepted recommendation , but thought the cost was much too high. I paid the additional amount, and service was performed. I have since determined that cost should have been about $50., and I could have done it myself for about $25.

I decided to purchase the Big Deal because my AC unit seemed to be rattling. The noise was intermittent but it was worrisome. UMC Appliance Repair Co. arrived a little late but they called to say they were delayed on a previous job. When they arrived, I told the technician about the noise. After inspecting the unit, he say that the condenser coil was extremely dirty and he recommended an acid wash. He asked when the unit had last been serviced. Since it had been a while since I had had a basic service, I told him to go ahead. He also said I was a little low on freon so I told him to top it off. These services added an extra $310 to the Angie's Big Deal. The AC unit is on the roof. The technician assured me that the acid wash would not hurt the roof or the plants in my yard. In order to avoid future acid washes, he recommended servicing the unit 2 times a year. The air conditioner is running quietly and efficiently now. I was unhappy with my old AC service so I will certainly use UMC Appliance Repair in the future.

First of all we can not take the money and serviced the unit and walk away. We have the picture and even technician showed the customer the unit and the filter that he was installing. There is no way of servicing the unit without installing any filter unless the unit does not have a filter rock. Of course by calling the other company they would say that there was no filter so at least they could get their service call. So basically she end up of spending more than actually what you she has paid UMC. and then complain .

It was over a holiday weekend (labor day) so I think that made it take longer than estimated. 3 days to a week estimate, but took almost 2 weeks. Cost - the actual install cost $300 less than estimated but the project ended up costing $2000 more than estimated because it failed inspection. Install was in a garage so the inspector cited fire code violations. For example, we had to install a fire proof door to the crawlspace, and replace all the PVC pipes going through the garage with cast iron. I don't know if they should have known these things would be a problem and included it in the estimate. They had assured me before the inspection that "they only review the HVAC work" but it turns out I ended up spending a lot of money bringing a 1962 house up to code. They did fix the things related to HVAC cited in inspection without charging extra. I did give an A review because overall they were very responsive and seemed to do a good job. They did some extra things like put in clothes dryer vent to the outside. I wasn't in a hurry so the extra week didn't bother me. The extra $2000 to bring the house to fire code bothered me, but I'm not sure that could be avoided with any contractor.

The call was arranged from 11am to 1pm on Saturday September 7th 2013. I arrived at 11:50 and had called customer 30 minutes before arriving to let him know my (ETA). When I arrived I was knocking on the door and ringing his door bell for several minutes and no one was responding, I waited for a few more minutes and decided to give him a call and no answer. After about 10 minutes he finally came out the front door. I introduced myself and politely asked him if could show me where the units were located, he closed his door and had me walk around the house to the units, before getting to the units I asked him if there was anything on usual going on with the system or anything that I shoul be aware of before starting the maintenance and right away he answer in a strong tone of voice that he had not called for any repairs that all he wanted was the inspection/maintenance and that he was not interested in anything else. He showed me the units and I noticed that he had (2) units and asked him what unit needed the inspection/maintenance performed on and informed him that he had only paid for (1) and that if he wanted both units worked on he had to pay an additional fee for the other service. He was not happy with the information just given to him and keeped insisting that he shoul have both units worked on for the price of (1) and that he thought that the amount he paid of $49. Was fair for both systems. I explained to him why that was not possible and asked him to let me know witch unit he wanted the work performed on after trying to Barggen with me he picked the downstairs system. I started with the work and right away noticed condenser coil extremely damaged, it has push marks all over and a high amount of air is being restricted from properly traveling trough the coil lines and cooling the system properly. I offered to correct the problem and properly explained to him how I was going to correct it. I offered to colm, brush and asid was condenser coil and quoted him $279 for all the work that was needed and informed him that part, labor and taxes where included in quote. He asked me if he could see the tools that were needed to repair coil and how it was going to be done, after I showed him the tools and showed him how I was going to do work, he said that he thought that the quote given to him was to high and that he was going to do the work himself. After he refuse to pay for any corrections that were needed I asked him if he could please show me were the furnace was located and he told me that the access was located in his master bed room closet, he took me inside the house. Before I entered his property I cleaned my shoes in the floor matt and he seen me do so, he never asked me to take my shoes off, if he had asked I would gladly respected wis request and had taken them off.. I got to the furnace and performed inspection/maintenance and after work completed informed customer that the furnace was in a good condition and the only thing I recommended was to change out the filter (2)times a year. In my way out the house I asked him if I may use his restroom and he was ok with it and after using restroom I whent for his invoice and ask for his signature and before signing anything he took out a list . The list was of what he thought that was needed to be done for the maintenance and I explained to him that the list he had did not apply for his equipment and informed him that the list he had was for a commercial equipment.. we will post the hour from our program what initially the technician spended it wasn't 15 min it was 53min12sec. there was no way for the amount of work that initially has been that could have been done for 15 min. not realistic.

I received conflicting stories the night before the service was to be performed. It had been scheduled for over a week and the night before at 7:41PM the scheduler lef a message that she hadn't notice they were going to be working on the opposite side of where I lived. When I called they changed the story and said truck had broken down. I told her not to bother that I was cancelling. That was enough to find them unreliable.

Initial call was taken by a new employee and she was not aware of the locations that we really serviced. Beside that technician had a truck issue. We do not service in that area and yes it was way off the road so we politely asked if we can reschedule the call for some other day that technician would not be stuck on the traffic easy way of in and out . Instead of understanding she started yelling and screaming at the dispatch for a mistake that has been made but she was still willing to take the call for some other day to please her. Yes she made a mistake fist of taking that call and yet we were offering her no matter what to satisfy her needs but yet dispatch was screamed and cursed left and right. We did everything we could to please her .

UMC installed a complete AC system with furnace, ducting and air vents at a very reasonable price! Yurik, is very professional and so is his team who completed the work in 3-4 days. We have a small house and wanted the most affordable and efficient system and after getting several quotes on equipment and service, UMC was the best choice! Two months in and at 105 degree weather, our AC is working great and keeping the house nice and cool! Best investment ever!

Before we decided which company to use to replace our 25+ year old HVAC system, we interviewed/got quotes from about seven companies. Each company rep. interview/quote took about two hours, so this is no quick and easy process. Yurik Khudanyan, the owner of UMC, was the last person we interviewed. We were down to two other choices, but called "just one more" from Angie's List. We are very glad we met with "just one more." When we first sat down with him, he showed us the different equipment options, explained the different features, and did not try to sell us on the more expensive options. He gave us four different quotes based on level of equipment. We chose the least pricey, and got no push-back from him. His prices were excellent, especially considering how diligent and attentive he and his workers were. Yurik is a consummate professional, very knowledgeable, and always handled any questions we had seriously and respectfully. The work was performed on the dates he promised. The system was up and running when he said it would be; three days from the start day. The workers cleaned up very carefully at the end of each work day. They were polite, did not play music as they worked (Yurik's personal policy), and showed us what they had accomplished at the end of each day. The city inspector came and gave the system his approval. We have the proper city permits, which were included in the original price, making Yurik's total price that much more attractive. This is something other companies were adding as an "option" for $500-$600. The a/c has been working just as it should. No complaints whatsoever.

We had an excellent rapport and they did a great job in installing the ductwork. Very little ductwork can be seen in the house! They were very considerate of our time and space. Victor established good working conditions from the very beginning working with his men. Yuri was always very helpful and accomodating in setting up the contract and going according to our wishes. he installed a 2 zone Wi-Fi system that allows us to control each floor individually. After a month of the system, we are very happy with the results. They did the work inside of a week, sometimes working well into the evening to get the electronic system working just right. We found Yuri highly recommended through Angies and would also recommend UMC to anyone else.

We've used UMC before, and been very happy with the service and work done once by Yurik himself and once by one of his crew. But this time he really went above and beyond: Our A/C stopped working this Sunday on a day where the outdoor temps were hitting 104 in the shade. We called UMC and my wife asked for Yurik specifically to call back, since she had really liked him on the earlier visit. Soon after Yurik called back and diagnosed the problem over the phone: We had installed a thick hypo-allergenic filter in our A/C that was severely restricting air flow. Yurik had us go out and confirm this by locating a outdoor pipe leading to the compressor and seeing that it was frozen solid, as he predicted. Yurik had us remove the filter and shut down the system for an hour until the pipe unfroze. He then had us call him back on his cell and instructed us on checking the motor and worked with us on three attempts to restart the aging motor, which was refusing to restart. With his help we were finally able to get the motor, and with it our A/C going again. Instead of a costly service call following a sweltering night, Yurik was able to fix our A/C by phone for no charge the same day it failed. Obviously we're big fans of UMC.

I phoned provider and the owner answered the phone. He took down all the pertinent information of my contact and said someone would call me later that day to set up an appointment to show up and inspect the air ducts for replacement. No one called. I waited for several days. No one called. I wrote a review. When they saw the review, finally someone contacted me and apologized. An appointment was scheduled. The owner showed up in a timely fashion with a trainee. Owner went to the attic and took photos of the existing system to show what else needed to be done besides replacement of the ducting. He also made other recommendations. He was excellent in communicating that the estimate was forthcoming after his visit. A few days later, I received his estimate. By that time, I already had quite a few estimates and have learned the lingo in the industry and know what to expect on these estimates.. Conclusion; Pricier estimates than most and oversold other items which I deem unnecessary as no other estimates recommended them. The estimate itself was a bit incomprehensible as some of the recommendations lapse into other specialties. . I do believe the owner is knowledgeable about his trade. But I am not looking to do extensive remodeling.

I picked UMC based on the glowing reviews. What I've since discovered is that the quality of their service depends on which technician they decide to send out. I got the bad one. Mine had no clue what he was doing, so I ended up significantly overpaying for basic services and feeling very cheated. I thought I was getting the $69 "A/C Tuneup" deal; I haven't had my HVAC system looked at in at least 5 years, so it was time. In the end, I ended up spending over $400 on....well not much. And believe me, that's a huge amount of money to spend on not much. For starters, the tech was supposed to arrive between 10-12 am. However, I didn't hear from him until 12:30 when he said he was running behind. He finally arrived at 1:20. But that's ok, I'm still willing to give him a chance. Things happen. From the get-go, it was clear he was simply not very knowledgable or confident; he appeared to be inexperienced and not up to the task without a supervisor or mentor around to watch him. He sold me on the acid cleaning for both of my A/C condensers due to some calcification on the fins. But $200+ for what turned out to be a 15 minute spray, hose and light scrubbing with a wire brush is an obscene amount of money for this. When I mentioned that, he "reduced" the price on the second condenser to $120. Frankly, had I known how easy it was to do an acid wash, I would've done it myself. He definitely took advantage of my lack of knowledge on the subject. Wait, it gets worse: one of my units (I have 2 zones) has trouble holding a consistent temperature. About a year ago, I replaced the thermostat (and the thermometer that sits in the flame area) but still having problems. The tech told me the only way to solve this is to buy one of those $250 Nest thermostats, which he'd be glad to install for me. He said my thermostat was too cheap and wasn't designed to hold the temp correctly. He said only the really expensive ones will hold to within +/- 1 degree. However, he did absolutely nothing to test the system out and/or confirm his assertion. After he left, I looked mine up (it's a $49 Honeywell programmable) and sure enough, the specs say it will hold to +/-1 degree, just as I thought. Now, it may well be that I have a defective thermostat, but since he did nothing to troubleshoot the system to source the problem, I've gained nothing from him being here. Finally - one of the main reasons I called this company for service was that I wanted them to give me a bid on installing some new ductwork. I'd like to add a new air duct in the den, and I want to route the bathroom and range vents to the roof. I spent quite a while explaining this to the tech, and I even gave him a document outlining what I'm looking for. He had promised to give me a proposal within 24 hours. A week later, still nothing. Frankly, after losing $400 with these guys and getting basically nothing except a 15 minute scrub of my condensers, I can't imagine why I'd consider using them again. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but the old motto holds true: first impressions mean everything.
Description of Work: $69 HVAC tuneup and request for proposal on needed ductwork services. Technician then sold me on an add-on acid cleaning service.

Response from UMC HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING REFRIGERATION
Service call was in a Sunday. Called customer 30 minutes before arriving to conform and to let him know i was on my way. I arrived to the property and the customer had a list printed of things he thought needed fixing, I considered his list and started inspecting the first systems. I started with the unit on the roof (package unit) when I connected my gages I noticed that the pressures were not normal. Filter was extremely covered with dog hair, dust and other particles, after I changed filter pressures changed but where not normal yet so I checked the condenser coin and notice years of dust and leafs accumulated in the coil. I notify customer about the situation and asked him if he wanted to see the restriction in the coil, he was afraid of height but he did go up to the roof to see the coil. i explained to him that the only way he was going to deeply wash that coil was with acid and offered to do it for him for a really low cost., he asked me to go see the other condenser coil that was located in the back yard. The seconded condenser coil was extremely damaged. Customer had construction done to the property and condenser coil fins hand been pushed against each other and because a big restriction of air, I explained to the customer that the coil needed to be calmed and acid washed. I also explained to customer that the system was working poorly because of damage and it was just a matter of time for the compressor to start having mechanical problems if problems were not corrected. Customer decided to only have the system in the roof fixed properly and to leave the one in the back yard as is. i explained to customer that the system in the back yard was the one that needed the most attention (asap). I offered to give him a discount on the acid wash and the calming. The customer approved and was impressed after all work was completed and he noticed the big difference on performance. My name is YURI and I am the owner and it is our responsibility to inform customer for each work and the pricing that needs to be done and of course it is the customers right to choose do or not to. We do not force customer to do the job. We provide customer with information good, poor, or bad. Decision make r is the customer and we do not carry guns we carry tools.

The tech told me the the the motor and another piece where needed to be replaced, He gave me an estimate, and when I could not afford the repair at this time, the tech went outside to make a call. He came back and said he could just replace the less expenses part and use an old motor for a reduced price. When I told him I still would not be able to afford the repair at this time and I would just pay the service fee. When I called to make the appointment I confirmed I could use the $25 Angie List clients coupon on the $97 service fee which was the stated fee charge they gave me on the phone and in the Angie's list customer reviews. I wrote a check for $72. The tech went outside to remove his ladder, and returned to say the $97 was after the $25 coupon. When I protested that when I made the appoint that was not what I was told and if I had to make a check out for the $97 they would be getting a bad review from me on Angie's list, the tech went out and made a call. Came back and said the receptionist had miss quoted but they would accept the $72. So this is my not so bad a review.
Description of Work: I called UMC for an estimate to repair my air conditioner. The a/c unit had not been serviced in 11 years and was only blowing hot air.

The man from UMC Appliance Repair, Heating and A/C & Refrigeration explained everything he was doing, the whole time. So I never had to question what he was doing. He was very thorough. He made sure to explain the different options and he didn't automatically jump to the most expensive option. He was very nice. He knew what he was talking about.
Description of Work: He went up in my attic and checked the filter and the blower and he went outside and checked the air conditioning unit and he ended up adding freon.
