They had to bring a crane out to do this. They came right away. They did a good job. They obtained the permit for me. They were reasonable on price. They were very friendly and professional. They were very accessible as well.

Alex and John showed up within a few minutes of the appointed time. They were very professional and asked for details regarding how the A/C unit was behaving before the failure occurred. When Alex had completed his diagnostics, he walked me through and explained what each was and what the expected response or range should be. He also showed me some issues that may have contributed to the issue (these items were suppose to have been completed during a repair in the previous year) and fixed them. Alex explained in detail everything that needed to be done and cost involved and even answered my dozen questions. I forgot to mention that I found them on Angie's list, and when I did, he reminded me that I get a discount :) The work was done within the time frame that he stated. He even gave us some pointers regarding changing out the filter in the FAU more often due to the number of pets we have in house, when we mentioned had one, he put went ahead and replaced it at not charge (even after they had cleaned up and were ready to leave)!! I had a excellent experience with UMC from my initial contact with Yurik and the work his guys (Alex and John) did. They are on my short list of companies I will use and recommend!

They were great. Prompt, professional, worked long hours in the dark with bitterly cold rain to get an old gravity heater out and a new furnace in. Very patient with questions. Smart and nice guys. Hope the furnace is as good!

Our washing machine broke.. with 2 kids, that's a disaster. I found UMC on Angie's list... called in the morning and they were able to accomodate my work schedule and come in teh evening. Fred was there ON TIME.. and i was late. He patiently waited and was nice about it... and did a great job fixing the machine in under an hour. We were thrilled.

They sent out a guy (Alex) who was very nice. He diagnosed the problem as a bad circuit board. He needed to got the part and return the next day. He gave me a ballpark figure of $250 plus labor. On the estimate he rounded up the parts to $300 "to be safe." He was here for 30 minutes the first day. The next day he showed up and said it would take 20-30 minutes to install. After 40 minutes I went in to see what was going on. One guy was sitting in the attic doing nothing, and Alex was out in his truck talking on the phone. So I motioned to him with a shrug like "what's going on?" and he said the guy was installing the part. I told him we had to leave and he rushed into the house all apologetically saying he didn't know we had somewhere to go. Should that have mattered? If we're paying by the hour for labor, should they really be taking their time and talking on the phone? I think not. So they quickly finished up and Alex wrote up the work order, which he couldn't find and had to go out to get from his truck. He totaled it up and forgot to put on my Angie's List coupon, so had to do it all over...and he's doing all this on his cellphone. He ended up charging me for 2 hours of labor at $97 each hour. He was not here for an hour the first day and the second day a lot of time was wasted. I hate paying people labor by the hour for just this reason. Then the parts labor which he bloated to $300 (to be safe) turned out to be $356! That's $100 more than he originally quoted me.

For multiple reasons, we have not used our air conditioner for many years. The last time it was used, it just circulated hot air. Since it is supposed to be a hot summer, we decided to have UMC (Alex) take a look at the system for us. As reported above, using dye, Alex located a refrigerant leak in the system and quickly repaired it. He thoroughly tested the entire system, which turned out to work perfectly after all these years - AMAZING! At a later date, we will need a new HVAC System (ours is 30 years old). We will absolutely have UMC (Alex) do the instillation of a new system for us.
Description of Work: UMC (Alex) installed dye in our air conditioning system to locate and fix a refrigerant leak. Upon successfully locating the leak, he quickly took care of the problem. R22 was then installed to test the running of the compressor/system, which turned out to be just fine. Alex also checked the evaporator coil for leaks and the drain pan for rust.

First Visit: Fred was on time and professional. He explained to me that there was ice buildup in my freezer which prevented the refrigerator side from getting very cold thus constantly working the thermostat which then broke. Solution: a) Replaced thermostat in refrigerator b) Instructed me to keep freezer/fridge unpluged for 24 hours to de-ice freezer c) Charged $365 Problem: When I turned on fridge 24 hours later not only did the fridge still not work but now the freezer didn't work either. Repeat Visit: Fred was on time and tried something else to fix the fridge but this didn't work. Told me I needed a new fridge. Did not charge me for second visit however did not refund any of my first visit money.

We knew that when we bought the house there was an issue with the Central air unit since it never passed inspection. However, we had no idea how much was wrong with it. This winter anytime the unit would start up, it was almost deafening. I not only wanted it fixed, I wanted to have it pass inspection so I could get that worry off of my mind. He explained to me what the code was and what he would have to do to make it pass. He also showed me where the duct work was ripped and detached from the vent. He basicly had to reinstall the entire unit, which I knew had to do. Great guy and will continue to use him for check upds.

We had three different companies come for estimates, and Yurik's price fit right in with the others. He impressed us right away with his knowledge of the job, and helped us understand our options and the features of the equipment. He educated us about details of our home that would make it more energy efficient. He was passionate about the work. He made two visits to our home before making the specific job proposal, and was patient in explaining everything we needed to know. He made recommendations of changing the location of our thermostat to the hall where there would be greater air flow and redesigned the ducts so that the air would flow evenly throughout the house. He encouraged us to consider replacing the insulation in our our attic and installing an attic exhaust fan. The job started on the agreed upon date, and there was no interruption in the work once it had begun. His worker Victor was every bit as competent and professional in his dealings with us. They arrived early in the morning, worked all day, and left our home in order But out greatest pleasure was the results! We had replaced an almost 30 year old appliance because it shook our house when it started up. We knew we would have a quieter and more fuel efficient system when we made the change. But we were surprised at how much the quality of the air inside our house had improved. We now have climate control in the den in the back of our house, that was never adequately heated or cooled before. The air flow in every room is even, without any drafts or blasts of air. Just a quiet, gentle flow of fresh, comfortable air. We would recommend Yurik to anyone! It was a pleasure to work with him.

They answered my call on Saturday afternoon as soon as we called. Other companies we called did not answer the call. Even though the gentleman will not perform the service for us, he was very helpful. He could perform the service but suggested we go with just a handyman to replace our AC unit. He said he could send somebody to do the service but he would need to charge us more than somebody that's not an AC tech would. What made good impression from that gentleman and company is that he didn't try to get our business and money, but rather he suggested the best way to go (which means giving the business to somebody else, not his company). I was glad to see there are still companies that care about the customer, not only their profit. Next is to find a handyman for the job.

My refrigerator motor started making a strange noise on Saturday morning. At approximately 9:30am on Saturday, I called UMC based on the Angie's List rating. The person who took my call asked me my name, telephone number, make and model number of the refrigerator, and asked me to describe the problem. I gave all of this information, and was told to unplug my refrigerator and that someone would call me back. It is now 3pm on Sunday and no one has called me back.

I called at 4:30pm on a Monday to request a check of my A/C which wouldn't turn on. I thought I would have to wait a few days but Alex arrived at 7:30pm with a smile. He called 30 minutes before arriving to tell me an ETA. Alex inspected my A/C unit and immediately asked to see my circuit breaker box and sure enough the breaker for the A/C unit was off. We flipped it and the A/C worked beautifully. I felt like an idiot but Alex didn't make me feel bad and offered to take a look at my HVAC to make sure it looked ok. The service was very professional and I would not hesitate to call this company again.

The first heater had appeared to not have been in use for at least 10 years. The technician cleaned the dust and cobwebs from the vent and verified everything was in working order. He was very thorough and very knowledgeable. He was training a new technician so it was interesting listening in on the training. He was unhappy with how the generator hung a little loose and used bolts to firm it up. He checked each part and deemed the unit safe and in good working order. The pilot light of the second heater would not stay lit. Within a few minutes he diagnosed it as a bad PG9 generator--luckily only a $39 part. At the same time, he noted that the gas line should be replaced with a flex line to be earthquake safe. He did not have a flex gas line with him, but I ran to the hardware store and he installed the one I bought. Again he was very thorough, checking each part and again going on the roof to clean the entire vent. I couldn't be more impressed with his knowledge of both units. He fixed both, with no suggestion that they should be replaced. He explained everything he was doing and had a real positive attitude.
Description of Work: UMC came to work on 2 wall heaters, neither of which were working before they arrived. The first heater was from the 1970s manufactured by Holly. The work involved cleaning the burner and flu pipe. The second heater was less than 10 years old and had a bad generator (PG9) which was replaced. The second heater also had a rigid gas line that had to be replaced with a flex gas line for earthquake safety. The whole job took 3 hours.

Then I had a second company come and they fixed the furnace in about 10 minutes!!!!!
Description of Work: Wanted to repair my furnace if at all possible and estimate for replacement if not. The man who came out told me it was not repairable and after much ado, his estimate was about $4000 to replace the furnace, airducts, asbestos abatement, etc. The next day I was shocked to see the replacement estimates starting at about $6000 and this is without including estimate for the asbestos abatement - thought to be an addtional ~ $900 so my cost would be >$7000 as opposed to the $4000 estimate..

For the last couple of years, our 31 year old Lennox heater did not perform properly. It would light and heat the house, but it failed to shut down - thus cooling the house after heating it! Due to the unusually cold weather, we decided to have the heater inspected by a "professional". After reviewing many heater repair services on Angie's List, and reading hundreds of their reviews, we decided to go with UMC Appliance Repair Company. Our choice turned out to be an excellent selection. Our call to the company was answered immediately, with an appointment scheduled for the following day. We were extremely pleased with the service tech - Alex. Alex was very prompt, very courteous and knew exactly what to do. He got right to work, diagnosed our heater's problem (needed a new Camstat) and answered all our questions in great detail. After the replacement part was installed, he checked to make sure that the heater was venting properly - it was not. Alex was able to obtain a new vent for our roof, and install it with ease. We were extremely pleased that Alex did not attempt to sell us a new heater. We know that we will need one in the next year or two, but we just wanted our old one repaired - for now. Once we have the means required for a new heater, and a central air unit, we will absolutely contact UMC Appliance Repair Company for not only a quote, but probably to complete the work for us. Overall, we could not be more pleased with the service we received. If you need your heater repaired, and are not interested in purchasing a new unit at this time, UMC Appliance Repair is the company for you!
Description of Work: Our 31 year old Lennox heater needed a replacement part (Camstat) in order to function properly. In addition to the part, we needed to replace a vent on the roof, which had been damaged during the replacement of our roof.

It was the hottest day on record in LA, around 113 degrees, and our AC stopped working. I called several AC repair shops, and the soonest anybody would commit to coming by was Wednesday morning (I was calling on Monday). My 5th call was to Yurik at UMC, and he said he would come by that night. Around 7:00 or 8:00, Yurik shows up, climbs up on my roof, diagnoses the problem, and repairs it. He was very nice, explained everything to me in detail, took his time despite the late hour, and he did this all with a bad back (he was clearly in pain). While most shops wouldn't even commit a visit before Wednesday, Yurik came after hours, and did a great job. He even took pictures of the damaged capacitor, saying that he had never seen one explode as badly as ours. A++ job, A++ service. I couldn't recommend him more highly.

I called and they said they can come out today and it would cost $97 for a service call which would be waived if they did the service. Victor came during the time they said they would come. I told them to give me a call so I can let them in the tenant's apartment. I came in 5 minutes and let him in. He was cordial and very friendly. He showed me that the pilot light would not stay lit and said it is either the thermocouple or the heating control valve. I asked him how much and he says $187 to replace the thermocouple and $800 to replace the heating control valve. I asked how much to replace the wall heater and he said $2000. I am already getting a bad feeling about this since I know it does not cost that much. Anyway since I had to pay the $97 I told him to go ahead and change out the thermocouple to see if it would fix it. He tried and it worked, great I am only out $187 I thought.... Anyway he writes up the bill and puts $197 for parts. I said hey you said it would cost $187 and he says $187 for the thermo couple but I had to replace the pilot which he did. Then he adds $97 for labor. I said that was just for the service call and now you are adding it back. The labor is my money. My thinking is he tries to get what his boss wants and whatever he can overcharge is for him. I am ticked because he told me it only costs $187 to replace it and now he says that is just for the part. UPDATE 2-16-11 After posting this review Yurik, the owner, personally called me to apologize for his new employee. He says Victor is new and needs more training. He says that he is trying to run an honest business. He really wanted to make things right so he gave me the cost for the labor plus the Angies List Discount. He also said that the cheap parts I saw on the internet are not the best and may malfunction and cause a fire. That is why he always uses the best parts. After talking to him I now know why he gets such good reviews. I will definitely call Yurik next time for any service.

When my furnace finally failed (I knew I needed a new one but was hoping to postpone the pain) at the coldest time of year, which isn't that cold since I live in Los Angeles. I needed to find a responsible and honest heating and air person and looked on Angie's list. I was fortunate enough to find Yuri. He came right out, worked with me on a price I was comfortable with, explained in detail what he was doing and why and completed the work in two days. Yuri also pulled permits and the city will be inspecting tomorrow. This gave me added security. Yuri is amazing and loves what he does, making his work that much better than anyone else's. I would use Yuri again in a minute and can't believe how lucky I was to find him!

The A/C unit control pad wire on my 1st floor was lost due to an awful contractor I used before. Rather than trying to sell me on rewiring and buying a whole new system, the wonderful rep from UMC recommended a wireless unit that would save a lot of time and money. I researched the price of the system and UMC agreed to match that price. THE SAME DAY they came out and fixed not only my 1st floor problem, but my 3rd floor problem. These people are the reason why I use Angie's List. When I researched them they had 100% happiness, and I came to find out that it was true. Thank goodness for Angie's list or I would have never found UMC. They are THE BEST!!! ALL OF MY A/C PROBLEMS WERE SOLVED THE SAME DAY I CALLED THEM. I am a very tough and detailed customer, and I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT UMC APPLIANCE REPAIR! THEY ARE ONE OF THE LAST TRULY HONEST COMPANIES OUT THERE! THANK YOU!
Description of Work: UMC is why I love Angie's List! Everything that what written about UMC was true! They are WONDERFUL. I live in a large home in an expensive neighborhood. Over the past year of owning this home I have come in contact with many contractors who try and take advantage based on the size / neighborhood of my home. UMC was amazing. Two out of my three A/C systems were not working, and I was very concerned. I was once again concerned that the contractor would try and sell me a whole new unit. UMC was wonderful. The rep spent over two hours here and only charged me a one hour rate. He fixed a small issue that fixed the entire problem. He could have lied, cheated etc... Instead he was honest and fixed the problem rather than trying to dupe me into buying a whole new system. When I do need new A/C units, you can believe I will work with these wonderful people again!
