This company is the best. Joe is easy to work with, customer oriented, knowledgeable, professional, prompt and responsive. My job was a repair after my plumber jack hammered the concrete walkway to replace a root-clogged area drain, I was new to Angie's list and looked up concrete repair guys. When I saw all the glowing reviews of Joe's work, I called him, got an estimate that included an allowance for being a member of Angie's List and agreed to have him do the work. I was pleasantly surprised when he called to say he could do the work ahead of schedule. He and his crew showed up when he said they would and went right to work without having to have me show them the area needing repair (actually, I had already described the basic area in our first conversation, but he did remember what I told him). He and his crew did a beautiful job at a reasonable price. I guess I'm just adding to the well-deserved excellent reviews. He's my man for any and all future masonry work.
Description of Work: Saw cut and square off jagged jack hammered area., Pour 4" of concrete and broom finish.

I have never seen or met a contractor and his workers that are so clean. EVERY day the yard was cleaned up immaculately. It was like I didn't even have work being done. Joe and his workers arrived every day on time and when he needed to pick up materials in the morning he always communicated with me ahead of time. The work was completed within the specific contract term and I didn't have any issues with additional costs being added because of un-foreseen things happening. In fact, I have already recommended Joe to couple of friends that are considering redoing their backyard.
Description of Work: First of all, I will hire Joe back in a second if I have another concrete/masonry job to do. I called Joe for an estimate and he arrived promptly on the day scheduled. Joe's estimate was in the middle price range. Not the cheapest and not the most expensive. I interviewed 5 contractors including Joe. The job consisted of removing wrought iron fence from the entire backyard, removing grass, and removing dirt to fill in part of our driveway. We started off with a rough estimate because I wasn't sure visually how everything was going to look and I had a dilemma of leaving some grass in the backyard or not and either removing all the concrete or not because I wanted drainage installed. Joe came over 4 times to discuss different options. He brought me samples of bricks, discussed pros and cons of doing certain things and the MOST enjoyable was he listened to my wants and concerns. My job was a pretty big size for a residence and very labor intensive since I live on bed rock on a hill. The work that was completed was a 2-3 ft brick fence with caps. The reason for 2-3 is because he stepped the grade level of the bricks as a design. The design that I drew for Joe came out exactly what was on paper. He used regular brick and split face brick. Then he laid concrete though the entire backyard and the driveway. The driveway concrete was finished with the exact same pattern as the house had originally. The driveway was extended to add more parking space if needed.

We couldn't be happier with our new driveway. What a difference! Our boys are now out back 24/7 riding their bikes and scooters. Joe was only the second estimate I got, but I knew immediately that he was our man. He is no nonsense, no games but also a pleasant person. I think the fact that we had to wait almost 10 (!) weeks for the job to get started was actually a good thing. It speaks volumes that he was that in demand (summertime too). It was totally worth the wait. I also think the price was very fair for the amount of work I saw go into the job.
Description of Work: Demo'd and hauled away old asphalt driveway and poured new concrete with broom finish and brick border/ribbons.

From start to finish, Joe Messineo was the epitome of professional. He was prompt when we met to discuss the project and the estimate was delivered when he said it would be. Joe provided many ideas for tying my driveway into my home's style and the finished product is perfect. He promptly supplied me with a local address where I could view the color and textured concrete that I was considering. From my first contact with the company, throughout the project, and after payment in full (!), each and every phone call was either answered or promptly returned by Joe. From the stone yard, Joe called me to discuss choices for the perimeter - straight, rectangular cuts vs. jagged lines in a variety of shapes - to be sure we were on the same page and because of beautiful stone available. He and his team put in a full day of work three days straight in order to finish my driveway in advance of the expected finish date. At the end of each day, my home was left clean and the team's equipment, which I was asked if they may leave, was stored in a tidy fashion. Joe does what he says he will do and when he says he he will do it. Joe and his team did an A+ job on my driveway and I wish I could turn back the clock in oder to have them do masonry jobs previously done at my home.
Description of Work: Demolish and haul away existing approx. 16' x 30" paver stone driveway, then lay blue-flagstone border around driveway perimeter, pour concrete driveway with texture and grooved concrete diamonds.

I wanted to reface my fireplace and mount a flat panel television above the the fireplace, but not too high up. Joe Messineo performed demolition of my existing stone surround and the mantel of a very old, outdated fireplace. He did this to see how far back he could place the new framing work in order to recess the TV so that it did not stick out into the room. Once demo'd Joe and his team reframed the wall above the firebox and readied for the new East West Stone. Prior to any board going up for the stone, I did have to coordinate Joe's work with an electrician and I cabinet maker that I hired separately since I was bringing electricity and conduit behind the wall above the firebox in order to be able to hide cable box, stereo components, playstation, etc. in the new cabinets adjacent to the fireplace. Once this was done, Joe and his team came back to start the stone and finish the stone work. Once started the stone process went quickly. Joe and his team were really neat and clean each time they came in. They layed tarps and helped me move furniture and a rug out of the way. The fireplace turned out great. I am very happy with Joe's work and will definitely use him again. Another thing about Joe is that he was open and receptive to making adjustments to the work as it proceeded. He was open minded and made me feel very comfortable bringing things to his attention that I was not understanding. No question was a stupid question with Joe. In addition to the fireplace front, Joe made repairs to the grouting between the bricks on the inside of the fireplace box and made me aware of a very dangerous situation with the gas line running into the fireplace box. If he had not mentioned anything and considered it "not part of his work", I could have ended up catching my entire house on fire. I was very thankful that he said something and immediately had the problem fixed. I look forward to my next project with Joe and know that I have a mason that I trust will do the project the right way, and the way I want it. He was great!

Joe and his crew were very professional doing the job. They showed up at the time stated and they cleaned up every day. Since the work was outdoors, they could not perform work when it rained. Joe coordinated with us about possibilities of no work ahead of time. The job was finished as promised within 10 working days and it looks magnificent. I would not hesitate to use this company again.
Description of Work: Joe Messineo performed the following work: installed stone cladding on 7 outdoor columns, a 2 story chimney, a rooftop chimney, and built a new mailbox enclosure. Joe also regrouted a portion of the outdoor stone walkway, fixed an area of a stone wall, and redid a portion of a block wall.

Joe came out to give an estimate and was at our home when he said he would be. Provided the estimate of the cost and an estimate of when he could do the job (had a few jobs to do before he could get to ours). Came back when he said he would and did the job in one day. Matched the color of the blocks which are >50 years old to the new blocks. Looks great! No mess afterward. Would recommend him to others.

I was pleased with the entire experience. Joe came out, and gave an estimate soon after I called him. He was easy to deal with, and efficient. The work was done promptly, neatly, and professionally. Joe and his crew were tops. He gave me a call back to make sure I was satisfied with the work. I would definitely hire this company again.
Description of Work: Messineo Masonry & Concrete was hired to clear a 300sq. ft. walkway & then fill it in with concrete. Old concrete curb was removed, and a new walkway was poured. I gained a smooth finish walkway 44ft. long beside my house. The physical work was completed in two days.

This is our second project we have completed with Joe and his team. The previous project was a large colored and stamped concrete pool deck and patio. Our property is very difficult to grade and drain properly, and access can be problematic.. This job involved a hilly, very large driveway. The team showed up as scheduled, kept the area clean at all times and went out of their way to accomodate us. Joe's driveway is pure perfection! Joe is a real pro and more than able to design and execute any job. Do not hesitate to call Joe Messineo. He is simply the best.

Description of Work: I had Mr Messineo replace a small brick step front step to my house with a larger one- he came out gave me an estimate and then came back when he said he would- the job was done in one day- step was just like we talked about- he cleaned up and everything was great- I was very impressed with his work and service I had already gotten a couple of estimates for the same work and Mr. Messineo was so reasonably priced I couldn't believe my good luck!

We hired Joe Messineo and co to do two different jobs in our backyard. First, we have had some water damage in the rear addition of our house. Whoever built the addition, before we moved in a long time ago, paved the backyard with concrete that tilted toward that part of the house. Completely idiotic, because in every major rainstorm, the back part of the concrete where it meets the house addition, and the side of the house, pools with at least several inches of rainwater. So needless to say the water damage has been extensive. I brought in one of my contractors to try to recommend a solution. He suggested we cut the concrete about a foot wide all along the house where the addition is, and put in a drainage system. I even brought in a plumber who recommended the same thing and quoted me about $1800 for the work. The problem with this solution is that it would have looked ugly when the concrete was repoured. Furthermore, drainage systems have their own problems after some time. We have pine trees around our house that rain needles and seeds all over our backyard, and it will clock anything up after a period of time. So I was never happy about this solution. After reading some reviews on Angie's List--with a healthy amount of skepticism as Angie's List is not always accurate and helpful--I brought Joe in to give me his take on the problem. Joe was great on the phone, came the next day, and suggested that we cut a wide swath of concrete all around the addition, and then repour concrete that would create a swale. The swale is a concave swath of concrete that lets the water pool in the center of that part of it, and the swale would lead the water from the backyard around the side of the house, under our gate, and then out to the road where it's lower in elevation than our house. This solution made complete sense, and it looks a lot better since where we cut, removed, and repoured the concrete matches better with the rest of our backyard. The swale sticks out a bit, but it's a much better solution than we had before. This cost us $2400 to do, which I was quite happy about because it was a lot more concrete work than other people had suggested, and slightly more expensive. And after several rainfalls (not major ones), it works perfectly. Unfortunately within a few days of pouring it, on one part there was a very thin crack that developed. I sent Joe a photo and he apologized, and promised it would not cause any water problems in the future. If that's the case it's fine with me, but it doesn't look as clean as one would like on a brand new job. I also asked Joe to quote me the removal of our old fence (only on one side of the house), and creating a concrete block wall. We asked for fawn colored block, which is more of an earth tone color as opposed to the gray stone you normally see. It was slightly more expensive. I haven't measured that length of wall, but I want to say it's about 60 feet long. This cost us around $4800 I think. Not cheap, although I didn't get other estimates for this so I can't really compare, but just anecdotally it was a lot of money for us. The wall though looks great, we're very happy with it and we plan to have it last, at least until the "big one" hits. The first job Joe's team did in two days, and the wall was finished in three days. Joe was always on site, always professional, and very good with his team. He responded to all my questions, gave great solutions, demonstrated confidence, and was always on time. I've had many bad experiences with various contractors--yes many on Angie's List--and this was one of my best experiences. It's not helpful when people don't give critique on Angie's List--both for the contractor and the client. So my only suggestion would be that for people like me who like to really talk over problems and solutions, to think things through with my hired help and feel like I'm able to take some time to make a good decision on something very costly, there were times when I felt rushed with Joe. I'm not sure if the impression came because I felt he was busy and needed to get off the phone or to get back to something else, but I never felt completely at ease to talk things through with him. It may also be a reflection of his confidence to do it the way he suggests. But it's an important suggestion, because when one is dropping thousands of dollars, it helps to give your client some time to talk it over. I had also asked Joe about a couple other areas in my backyard where the concrete was cracked or a stone was loose, and he didn't seem too eager to say much about dealing with some of those concrete problems, and I wish he had as I would have liked to use him to fix some of those problems as well. I saw an earlier review that Joe never called them, but I've never had that problem with Joe. He always returned my call at least within a day's time, but I was not someone who peppered him with calls. I don't give rave reviews of anything or anyone, but rather something I hope is helpful. Isn't that why we pay for this service? The bottom line is, we are very happy with the work so far from Joe Messineo, we paid good money for good work, and I would certainly recommend and use his company again. If any of you work with Joe, I'd be surprised if you have a bad experience. Big thanks to Messineo Masonry for their great work, and for helping us solve a serious problem with our home.
Description of Work: Two jobs: 1) Cut, demolished old concrete around the addition in our backyard and the side of our house, and then repoured concrete that would keep rainwater away from the house. 2) Removed an old wooden fence and put in a concrete block wall that went along one side of the house. Maybe 50-75 feet long.

This was the perfect contractor experience! I never even met Joe or his team (not that I wouldn't have enjoyed doing do). But, based on the reviews I read here of Joe's past work, I contacted him via email and he responded quickly. As I have a little background in the building trades, I had drawn up a simple sketch of what I needed and took some pictures of the existing condition and emailed them to Joe. Based on that, he was able to give me a quote on the job without having to physically see the job site at my house. Based on his quote, which I thought was reasonable, I gave the go ahead and asked him to schedule the job. Initially, his schedule allowed for the work to be scheduled in a week's tiime, but then a solid week of rain pushed the schedule out. After the rains passed, I emailed Joe again and he planned for the work to be done within three days. Since my house has water and electic available in the front before the gates, it wasn't necessary for me to be home for the crew to do the work. So, on that day, I left for work in the morning and came back in the evening to no signs that anything had happened except that I had new steps at the entrance--the only sign that anyone had been on my property in the meantime. The work site was flawlessly clean, everything neat and tidy and no signs of anything having been done, except for two neat holes where the crew needed to excavate the sprinkler line in order to remove one sprinkler head that was interfering with the new concrete work. I thought it was amazing attention to detail that Joe's crew had very neatly, and professionally, removed the offending head and capped the lines at the two joints where the length of pipe had to be removed. This was truly service above and beyond, and I was really impressed. Not to mention that the concrete work was exemplary and the new steps were beautifully done. It was also incredibly detail oriented and professional that Joe responded to some additional notes from my original email about future work that he could check out while he was on site that involved a side yard wall and a garden wall across the front the property. Not only had he caught all the details mentioned in my email, but followed up with a detailed quote for each job, separately, with a through, and reasonable, work quote. Which is why I will hire him again for those jobs in the near future.
Description of Work: The extension of my 2-step concrete entry stoop, which involved tearing out the existing lower step, pouring a new footing and creating a 12" extension to the main stoop and creating a new 12" deep step that returns on itself at the two ends in front of that.

This was the third time using Joe. My neighbors shared the cost in building a cinderblock wall around the entire property for two properties. We also had him do a small cinderblock wall between two properties in the front yard. We have been extremely happy with him and his crew. He communicates well and takes pride in his work. For this job, we called him in when we were adding an addition to the house. We didn't like the quote of the existing contractor and we knew Joe does good work. Not only did Joe give us a good quote, but be he had the idea of adding brick to border the patio and to usethe brick for steps leading to the patio. He exceeded our expectations and the patio is often the favorite part of vistors when we are showing our addition. He worked with us to add a certain kind of bracket to the patio, so we could install our own railing. We were out of money, and couldn't afford any more hired help and he did what we asked so that we could go back later. He has great suggestions and is refreshing to be able to communicate with. Extremely proffessional. He was on site for the job and we knew we didn't need watch him. Very trustworthy, because he does what makes sense and looks spectacular. He just has to be the best masonist in the area.

Excellent experience from start to finish. Joe is very personable and professional, and I was impressed from our first meeting. He was upfront with his opinions on how we were approaching our hardscaping, and explained how he would go about doing the project from a technical perspective (how much roadbase, how much DG, etc). The job is just now finishing, but everything has been great. It's taken several days longer than I'd expected, but only because Joe and his crew are doing a detail-oriented job, and everything has gone great.

WOW! Can all contractors be this great? Seriously, he came out quickly and called us with the quote the very same night. They were able to start working the next week and got the job day in 4 days exactly as promised. He and his workers were clean, professional, responsible, and extremely easy to work with. He was on-site (and working) unlike previous people we've hired for jobs that sub out all the work and aren't even around during the job. Our only wish was that he didn't just do concrete/masonry work! Our HOA has a heck of a time finding responsible contractors to do good quality work done at a fair price. We would hire his company again in a heartbeat.

My backyard had a slope which made it difficult to use. We decided to level about a third of it and to install a patio. After talking to three or four contractors I went with Messino . Joe leveled the portion of the yard as I requested; built and stuccoed the retaining wall; built three steps from the lawn onto the patio and installed the brick patio. He also installed a concrete "bumper" along the side of the garage to keep the moisture from the lawn away from the garage. They showed up on time and cleaned the area each day before they left. I was completely happy with the quality of the work, the professionalism and outstanding workmanship. Everything went smoothly. Joe is a pleasure to work with and a gifted craftsman. When we are able we will ask him to re-do our driveway.
Description of Work: Messineo Masonry leveled approximately 14x30 feet of my backyard which sloped at about a 20 degree angle; built a cinder block retaining wall, installed drains and bricked in the area for a patio in a little over 2 weeks.

When I had the lamp post and the hedge removed from next to my brick front walk, this exposed a missing 12" x 12" area next to the driveway which was a safety hazard. I found Messineo Masonry on Angie's List. They were able to send over a mason the next day and he accomplished the job in less than an hour. It looked perfect, and 3 months later, it looks as if it had always been perfect.
Description of Work: Added bricks and mortar to complete a missing section of the front walk, about 1 square foot. I provided leftover bricks from another project; the contractor provided the mortar.

From estimate to completion their work was exactly they way they described it. we wanted abrick hearth removed to eliminate a tripping hazard for out toddler. I was especially impressed with their removel of the old hearth that butted up against ceramic tiles. None of the tiles were damaged. The split bricks were laid soothly and artistically. I can't overemphasize that fact. Work like this has an artisitc element to it and their work transcended mere competence in this regard.
Description of Work: They removed an old hearth and replaced it with lower profile split brick that wer flush with nearby ceramic tiles.
