It was a big job, well done, by a young and energetic crew. They worked very hard and were polite and considerate. My only shock was how much it costs to install a complete new system.
Description of Work: Complete new air con and heating system and all ducting replaced, new digital thermostat, and thermostatic attic exhaust fan.

We responded to a "$50 off" card they had previously left on our doorknob. Maybe we should have known better. SoCal Gas had been out earlier to tell us that the heating system wasn't working simply because it needed a new igniter, which is one of the most common and least expensive problems you can have with your heating system. The One Hour technician, Michael, said he would be less than professional if he did not inspect the entire system, so we said okay. After pulling components out and indicating that a number of them needed replacing in addition to the igniter, he went out to his truck to write up an estimate, which somehow took about 40 minutes. He then returned and asked my wife and I to sit with him at the table to review his estimate (oh oh!). What happened next made us wonder if we were dealing with a bona fide company or a criminal enterprise. He began by trying to sell us a maintenance contract. He then starting going through literally thousands of dollars worth of "preventive maintenance" repairs that he highly recommended we do right away. At that point I asked to see his estimate and zeroed in on the price he was quoting for the igniter. Fortunately, we had already done a little research on the cost of a replacement igniter. It is Bryant standard part #41-409 and is available from HVAC suppliers for about $50 (or less). Michael's written quote for this part was $358. He told us that was the company's price and not his. So, we then spoke with someone in his office named Joshua who informed us that this is the sort of price One Hour Heating needs to charge to stay in business. We've decided to use another company.
Description of Work: "Inspected" our heating system and quoted ridiculously high prices for replacement parts.

As a company we always value customer feedback. At One Hour, we take pride in our honesty, integrity and morals when working with our clients. We assure you that our technicians are trained, tested, and would never recommend anything they didn't find necessary for a customer's home. Also, it is important to note that our technicians only make recommendations for repairs and improvements, and it is the customer's choice to decide if they want to move forward with the work. Our upfront pricing has been put into place to insure our customer's are paying a set price for the service they desire, only after the service and pricing has been approved by the home owner.

They first determined that it was low on freon and when they started to fill it with freon they found that the pressure was out of whack so then they found that no filter had been installed by the builder. It had some kind of damage had gotten in, a rock or metal part, and caused blockage. They quoted us a couple of thousand of dollars and we elected to go with a new unit. The repairman came at 6 pm because they had a shortage that day. I had scheduled a tuneup and our air conditioner failed before they came. I told them I didn't want to reschedule because our air conditioner was broken and it was 98 degrees. They had someone come out and he did and he stayed until the guy came to give us a quote and get a new system. Dean was the repairman and he told us an awful lot of stuff before Don came. We sat with him and Dean stayed the whole time. We liked what they had to say so then Dean went out and got us an air conditioner from Home Depot so that we could survive until they could get us a new unit in. They also said that if the little air conditioner didn't help while we were waiting that they would put us up in a hotel which amazed me. I didn't want to do that, it was too drastic for us, and it cooled off that night anyway. The next day was hot. Don said he would call me right after his meeting to see when he had an opening within the next 3 days to install and he called me right after 8 and said they had an opening at 9 that morning and they could come out. They did. It took them at least 6 hours. They found that they couldn't put in the kind of thermostat that they wanted to. They needed 6 wires and they only had 5 so they gave us 2 choices. They could put in a 4 wire for free or they could put in an updated ones that is a remote for your iPhone or computer for $300. We said, no, we would just go with the 4 wire. A little while later they said that we couldn't get the 4 wire to work so we got the upgraded one for free. We have been very happy. We had the inspector out from the county last week and she told me she just loved working with them. They didn't charge any service fees, we just got a contract with them that includes the maintenance fees and the warranty. We have had this problem in our house since we moved in 9 years ago, it's a brand new house, 2 story. All of the air would flow downstairs and would freeze us out and it was loud and wouldn't come upstairs. So we blocked off all of the vents but one and that made it really loud downstairs. Now we have this new 2 fan thing and it runs real low and it's quiet and it balances the temperature and we get to have constant air filtering because the fan isn't too noisy and I need that because I have some allergy issues. I don't know how to compare on price. They did say that if I got another bid within 6 months that was the equivalent or the same kind of deal that they would give me a rebate.
Description of Work: I last used One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning around July 10th to check our unit which wasn't working. We ended up installing a new unit for us.

We responded to their $59 service and inspection special. We have 2 split units, 4 ton and 6 ton, they came to service and after inspecting them they wanted about $3,000 or $4,000 to correct very minor problems. The serviceman was polite and professional. He said we needed a new capacitor for the upstairs unit which costs $29 on the internet and they wanted $300 for it. My husband called to complain about the price and was finally able to get the manager to come down to $150 after spending about an hour talking to him. They did not do anything that made the upstairs unit work any differently than it did before. The serviceman indicated the downstairs unit needed to be drained of coolant which they could not recapture and reuse, that the fill inlet was rusted over and would need replaced, that the fan and coils in the air handler were dirty and would have to be taken out and cleaned at the shop which would cost $600. My husband declined all the services--they did nothing to this unit and after they left it ran fine as it had before they came. Concerned that the upstairs unit still wasn't working properly we called another company in who didn't think it needed more work. Coincidentally at the same time we got a phone call from 1 Hour Heating and AC to check up on how they had performed. When I told them we were not happy with their work and had called someone else in they said, "ok, thanks." and hung up. The second man we hired to come out and look at the units said that the fill inlet on the downstairs unit was in fine condition. After that we talked to our neighbors and found out they had thought of using One Hour Heating and AC, but had also had problems with them, especially super high prices. These guys have a real racket going if you know nothing about HVAC and they will take advantage of you by charging exorbitant prices. Because we saw them featured at both Costco and Home Depot we did not think to question their integrity.
Description of Work: Were called in to service the split unit upstairs and check the split unit downstairs.

I received a card in the mail that said they would provide an air conditioner inspection and maintenance for $79. I made an appointment for June 4 between 9am and 11am. They called around 10am and asked if I could reschedule to between 12pm and 3pm. They said they would waive the $79 fee. (Their advertising says if they are late you do not pay). I said OK see you between 12 and 3. At 3:20 I called them. They said Oh! so sorry! We can have someone come out right now! The only problem was that I needed to be somewhere else at 4pm. So I told them to forget it. They called the next day June 5 to ask if I wanted to reschedule. I didn't have the guts to tell him "yeah if you do it for free." So I declined their offer. I must say however, that I have heard from other people who have used them that they do good work. An acquaintance of mine had a whole house central air/heat system installed and he was very satisfied.

We went to a home show in Paso Robles and spoke to two company representatives about a $59 special on an inspection and tune up. The service person showed up when promised and was very friendly. My concern was with the attempt that was made to upsell us some very expensive repairs which I did not feel were justified or realistic on a home that is only seven years old. The technician performed the inspection and tune up, and we declined the upselling. It appears to me that the business practice is to get in the door with an inexpensive service call and then sell expensive repairs and/or upgrades. No harm done, I just don't care for the marketing approach.

Dear [member name removed], Thank you for taking the time to post your concerns on Angie’s list. It is this type of response that allows us as a company to better understand our client’s needs. When we do an inspection or tune up on a heating and cooling system, we do our best to make our client understand what we have identified what should be done to resolve any immediate issues, as well as prevent any future problems from occurring. Although we can never be 100% sure on a systems future performance, standard maintenance is always recommended. Sometimes, when trying to explain findings it gets misinterpreted as an attempt to sell something. We are constantly training our technician’s to better educate our clients, so that there is full understanding of what we have identified, what should be done and what options they have. Our job is to educate clients on all aspects of our findings so that they can make a decision on what works best for them and their needs. I apologize for any misunderstanding and will take your comment as a reminder as we continue the education with our staff in proper communication. I wish you luck with your system and hope you will feel comfortable contacting us in the future for any needs you may have with your heater and air conditioner. Sincerely, Jason DeVries

A year ago this company installed in our home a ductless heat pump unit. It never work right because, as we later discovered, it was installed incorrectly. The company promised to redo the job, but every time they set a date to do it, they sent someone else out to "assess" the situation. Finally, they came with a unit that was not anything like the one initially installed. When I rejected it, they told me they couldn't please me and that they would refund my money. Do not use these people--they are in chaos. They tell you one thing and then don't deliver.

Response from One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning
Dear [member name removed], Thank you for taking the time to post your concerns about my locally owned and operated company, One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning. It was my understanding through discussions with your wife, that the idea of installing a ductless mini split where initially brought up due to the fact that you have one installed in a second home. Also, being a heat pump would have the added benefit of Air Conditioning (for no extra cost) that is nice to use from time to time in the costal zones. Space was limited to install this unit and the original installers did the best they could to work within the area. It was then brought to our attention that you wanted the unit to heat and cool the master bedroom while being located in the living room a year later. To make sure you where completely satisfied we made the decision as a company to remove the original ductless mini split installed a year prior, purchase a dual headed unit (not offered in the same finish as the single head originally installed). We had a detailed plan (that took some time to finalize) with your authorization to relocate the outdoor unit and all necessary mechanical connections. Work was started and stopped when it was decided you did not like the dual headed unit. We had now spent over $7,000 dollars between the two installs and had two systems that could not be returned. Due to the continued communication breakdown and the $2,000 loss, it would be best to refund your full purchase $4,990 as we did and go separate ways. I am sorry that my efforts and refund were not enough to satisfy your needs. I have worked very hard with my team to make our business the best in town. We wish you the best of luck in solving your heating and air conditioning needs. Sincerely, Jason DeVries

Give them a call and compare with others. We haven't used them yet, but the estimate went well enough that when we do clean our vents, we'll be using Wighton's.
Description of Work: Wighton's came out to look at our heating system and give us an estimate price on cleaning. We were told the system looked fine, and that we could hold off cleaning at this time. We were also given an estimate on how much it would cost to have the system cleaned. People seemed professional, price was on the high side, but fair.

We rent our home and it was paid for by our landlord. They were fine. He explained what he was going to do, and he was very polite. It was just a good experience for us because we did not deal with the financial aspect of it. He showed up when he said he was going too. He took about the same amount of time he said that it would. He was nice and professional. We are actually moving out of the area, but if we were here and something came up, we would call them first than someone else.

During the One Hour quote, they asked who else I was getting quotes from. I believe One Hour knew that if they could not get me to commit that night they had no chance since I had Wighton?s coming out. Wighton?s offers the same brand (Lennox) as One Hour and extremely better prices. The entire quote process from Wighton?s was professional. My advice is to STAY AWAY from One Hour.
Description of Work: On October 22, 2012 One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning came out to perform service on my gas furnace. I signed up for this at my local Costco. The technician was friendly and seemed knowledgeable. Unfortunately my furnace ended up being condemned as the heat exchanger had cracked and had two holes in it. The technician asked for and received my email address and said he would send me the pictures he took via email. I could see the crack and holes in the pictures. This is unsafe and they had to turn the furnace off and tag it as condemned. I don’t blame them for this as the furnace was 22 years old. The technician made it clear to me that he would put the furnace back together in running condition, but statute required that he turn the gas off, unplug the electrical and place a tag on the furnace indicating its unsafe condition. Two days later, One Hour came out to provide a quote on a replacement furnace. This is where this process went bad. The original technician came out to provide the quote along with his supervisor. They did not walk through the house, measure any rooms, ask about or examine windows (single pane, double, etc.), did not look at or measure existing registers and did not examine existing duct work. They quoted prices ranging from $4,700.00 to $11,000.00. That sounded somewhat high to me. The supervisor took phone calls during this process and since I was hearing his conversation, I became aware he was in a hurry to leave. When they finished the sales pitch I told them I felt I had to get at least two quotes and probably more. This started the hard sell. As part of the quote, they were going to replace the return air duct as it was not large enough and would not charge for this. Once they found out I was not going to commit on the spot, I was told if I did not commit then and there, it would be another $700.00 for the duct work. I asked them if they were seriously telling me I would have to pay $700.00 more if I decided tomorrow morning to go with their quote. The answer was yes. At this point the supervisor was packing up and in a hurry to leave. I have sent email to both the technician and supervisor and have heard nothing in return. I never received the pictures the technician told me he would send. I received another quote the next day. The quote was for $2,500.00 installed, out the door. The company (Wighton’s) did a thorough inspection of the attic, every room, every register and every window. The measured every room and determined the square footage of the house and the amount of BTU’s required to heat the house properly taking into account everything above. There is a process and calculation that delivers the size unit the home needs and the amount of air flow required. One Hour wanted me to buy a 60,000 BTU unit. I only needed a 42,000 BTU unit. Needless to say, I went with Wighton’s.

I have no doubt that the tech did a good inspection of the A/C and separate heating unit. However, I did not expect this inspection visit to be a huge sales pitch to replace working parts. The tech was more than insistent about replacing the parts because he was trained to sell un-needed parts to people? I will be having an inspection by my Gas Co to verify what the tech said about my heating unit. My utility bills are not high enough to warrant replacements of either unit. All in all, I was not pleased with the sales pitch. My advice is do not be intimidated by the tech's knowledge of things you do not understand. If it's not broken or dangerous, do not fix it.
Description of Work: Received a card by mail regarding a special of an inspection of A/C unit for $79.00. Called and made an appointmnt for technician to come by and check my 20+ yer old unit. The technician checked my unit outside, all the output temps from registers, and the thermostat inside. All registers were putting out cold air. Tech also inspected my interior heating unit. Then when he was through with both inspections he told me that the A/C unit outside would be needing a new pressure switch/contact for compressor that as it shows wear and tear, selling for $292. Since it has never failed, I asked him to re-install it back into my A/C unit. Then the tech told me that parts of my heating unit were needing to be replaced too. He showed me the interior of part of the heat exchange that he said should be replaced as it showed some color change at the back. I know that the Special was NOT for an inspection of my heating unit and was not part of the Special price. I know that my Gas Company will do the inspection of my heating unit for free. Tech also noted on receipt that the heating system was not energy efficient. Since my gas bill did not go above $65 per month in the winter for 18 hours of use in a 2,000 square foot home per day, I do not consider this out of line, nor energy in-efficient.

This company performed exactly as advertised. Their representatives were very knowledgeable, responsive, punctual, and courteous. They made the whole experience extremely easy for us. They were very neat, quiet, and careful in our home. They were exceptionally organized and finished the work right on schedule. They took care of submitting all required paperwork for rebates. (It's too soon to have received them yet, but we anticipate no problems.) So far, the new system seems to be a wonderful improvement. It is extremely quiet, the dust level in the home seems to have declined considerably, and the air seems fresher. We are anxious to see our next electricity bill to see how much we are saving.

Excellent. This is the second time we have used them and we wouldn't use any other company. They arrive when they are due. Everything about the job is up front so you know what is happening. Took away the old units and gave us credit for the A/C. Everything was clean & neat when they finished. We didn't know that their was a dent in the compressor top, but they did, and made sure it was replaced. We have recommended them to two of our friends and they both used them and are very happy also.

The technician arrived right on time for the estimate. He was very knowledgeable and trustworthy. I agreed to have them come to install the new unit when i wasn't there (it's a vacation cabin). The new unit is fantastic and they left the place spotless. They have a policy of being available 24/7 for repairs, which is essential for a vacation home. If we arrived for the weekend and the unit wasn't working, it would ruin our trip.
