Came for A/C inspection and then tried to sell me a new unit. I got 2nd and third opinions and gee what do you know---my A/C unit was just fine!!! |I purchased this "inspection" through Home Depot a few years ago and relayed info regarding my experience to store manager. Because of their sales techniques I would never use nor recommend Orangutan. I realize this may have been an isolated incident but for me it will be the only incident!!! |I do have to admit that their trucks are pretty cute though!!!

(Removed members name) sorry to hear you were not pleased with the technicians recommending a new system. Our appointment notes from the Home Depot stated you were interested in financing and perhaps that is why you were quoted on replacement. Not sure how old your system is but if it is less than 13 SEER and still using R-22, and 10-15 years old we would suggest you start doing your homework on replacement systems because one major repair would likely lead to a replacement system and you want to be prepared. It’s also smarter to purchase during the slow season and or when the Rebates/Incentives are highest.

Their prices are high and when I had an AC problem they were not very responsive. Some quotes they gave me for plumbing work were significantly higher than others.

Sorry [member name removed] you’ve felt our plumbing quote was too high. We do use flat rate pricing so labor is included in all fees. We are also the largest plumbing/hvac contractor in the state and with that come over head items like insurances, buildings, fleet, and other fees that make it harder to compete on lowest price with smaller companies not having as much overhead. We try to be competitive and we do operate on margins less than 10%. No sure what you were quoted but I’m sure it’s close to our industry’s standard pricing. With flat rate prices there are discounts available when multiple items are quoted. If you would like to discuss further please give me a call. Thanks.

I had an appointment for heating service and had to be home between 8AM and 5 PM. I sat on my butt all day waiting and at ten minutes before 5 they called and said they could not make it and I would have to reschedule for another day and be home again all day. I refused that and then called the main office and complained and they said someone would be here the next day at 1PM. Again no one showed for that appointment and no one called either. This company is incredibly unreliable and I would never use them. And this company solicits business in Costco. I rely on Costco for good customer service and from their vendors also. This is customer service at it's worst. I will, of course, let Costco know about how unreliable this company is and recommend they not allow them to solicit business in their stores.

We are sorry our tech was running late on 11/18/13. We called to inform of delay at 4:42 PM and tech did let us know your were displeased with the delay and after speaking with one of our managers and rescheduled for 11/21/13 (completed) and we offered you a free one year maintenance program so your heat and cooling check-ups would be free of charge. On 12/5/13 you called for service then cancelled stating the system started working again. Then again you called on 12/9/13 for service and again called back to cancel stating the system started working again. If you would like to schedule a free courteous inspection to make sure nothing is wrong with your system please give Ron a call in the service department.

I bought an a/c through the hardware store and they sent these losers to install it. The a/c has caused problems for the two years I've had it. Orangutan has come out over 20 times to try to fix it. They don't show up, they are unprofessional, and they are the most unprofessional a/c company I've ever worked with!

Sorry you’ve had several issues with your new Rheem unit. We replaced the TXV twice as well as the Reversing valve. We’ve been in contact with the local and regional Rheem service reps and have been doing what they stated needed to be done. We spoke on phone and hope the system is working much better. If unit has another major malfunction I will do my best to try and get you a new system replacement. Unfortunately I have to go through Rheem to get this done. Let’s hope there are no more problems in the future. Thanks for your patients.

I was very disappointed in the results of my interaction with Orangutan. I have used them for 8 years for Air Conditioning with no problems until now. This summer I required a new unit and during the installation process, there was an incident at my home. The company declined to pursue this, or take responsibility. In spite of the involvement of the police and the BBB, this issue has not been resolved at all. They claim that their employees are background checked but I have significant doubt of this, in spite of information provided to them. I will not be using them again.

We purchased our home in June 2010 and got a "free" inspection of our A/C through a booth inside Home Depot. Because Orangutan was associated with Home Depot we thought they were reputable. We replaced a working A/C with a new Rheem Orangutan sold us with a five year warranty and a salesman's promise that if it ever broke down and they couldn't repair it within 24 hours, Orangutan would pay for a motel until the A/C was repaired. The A/C has required five service calls for repairs within three and one half years. (not seasonal inspections & maintenance) Obviously it is a sub-standard unit. On every service call, except one on July 30, 2013, the service man arrive at least 2 hours after he was scheduled. The exhaust vent for the furnace was installed incorrectly in June 2010. None of the service men nor the routine inspections identified the error. We identified it and your technician installed it correctly on July 30, 2013. The incorrect installation was most likely leaking carbon monoxide into our home during the winter months for three years. Twice, not once, but twice we've had to wait for ten days for parts to repair the air conditioner. Orangutan service men have commented that the air return duct system is not adequately sized. This is the system they installed. From July 15,2013 to July 24, 2013 the A/C did not work and we waited for parts. Our motel and kennel bill was $862.60. We've contacted Ron Schuman, owner of Orangutan for reimbursement of those costs. His answer was contact Rheem and "hopefully you're not holding our feet to the fire." I contacted Rheem and learned the original parts were not Rheem parts. Orangutan never registered the system for a Rheem warranty and Rheem has no records regarding our purchase of the A/C unit. The owner blamed Rheem Manufacturing, in writing, for the delay in parts. The parts were available and in stock at a local supplier during the 10 days we were without air conditioning in July heat!

Sales representative first called me with a quote and was very professional. The price was agreed upon and he laid out a time line for my next contact. Installation personnel called and arranged the installation. They were prompt and professional. Upon leaving, they informed me another individual would be calling to arrange repair/painting for the scuttle. (the framework of the scuttle had to be removed for the installation. Just as promised, the repairman called, scheduled, fixed and painted the area to my satisfaction. All was completed in a timely fashion and in a friendly manner. I would highly recommend Orangutan in the future to anybody looking for a new A/C unit!

Our AC is working great now and we have had no problems. The conversation with this manager was uncalled for and he has no business being a manager. Even though our AC is working great now we will not use their services again because of the way we were treated by this manager. Also when my husband went to the Tempe office to talk to the owner he told me the manager denied the conversation I had with him. So apparently he is not accountable for his actions which I find very distressing.
Description of Work: We had to have a new air conditioner unit put in because our previous one was 17+ years old and was failing. Orangutan came out 7/19/13 to install a new unit. The technician showed up at around 9am with a trainee. They were there until 7pm. Everything was working great until 7/27 when the unit stopped working in the afternoon. I called Orangutan and asked for a technician to call us back thinking it may be something we could do since we got a new digital thermostat and were learning how to use it. Eventually Alex came to our home after hours to look at what the problem was. He went up into the attic and said he just "turned on" the light and the unit turned on. He wrote on his receipt "high voltage issue. Unit running but need to return to run wire direct from switch." He told us to call Monday morning to arrange to have an electrician to come out to fix. I called on Monday and made arrangements to have a technician to come out after 4pm the following Friday. Friday afternoon came and went with no technician phone call or one to show up. I called the following day (Saturday) and the lady that answered said a technician would call me on Monday. Nobody called by afternoon so I called Orangutan back. I was on hold for a long while and hung up because I was driving and in traffic. Shortly after hanging up the phone rang while I was in my car and a manager (name Roy or Zeb?) called me back. I told him the problem that our AC went out and we were supposed to have an electrician come out to fix it. He was sarcastic and told me that they do not do work for free on a pre-existing problems. I told him I bought a new AC unit for $8,000 and that should have been part of the installation. He also accused us of going up into the attic and turning off the light. He argued with me stating this was a pre-existing problem that they were not going to fix. We went round and round until I got frustrated and hung up on him. This person has no business being a manager much less in the business of talking to customers. I called my husband telling him what had happened. My husband drove to Tempe where the Orangutan office was and asked to talk to the owner. After talking to the owner it was arranged to have an electrician come to the home to see what the problem was. The electrician did show up, went up into the attic and told my husband the men that installed the AC unit took a short cut and wired it through the attic light. That was why our AC went out and went back on when the switch was turned on by the first technician.

I lost my AC in the middle of the night. I called them first thing the next morning and they got here right away. They popped on this piece to cool off the house so I could make a decision. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE BUNCH OF MONKEYS!!!! First off ask yourself why would a honest reputable company change their name? The answer is they would not...if a company has made a good name for themselves they do not typically change their name just because a new name sounds good. My mother had purchased a maintenance package from this company for her AC / heater. They were to come out twice a year to do routine cleaning and system check ups / preventive maintenance. They will tell you that this package will help keep your energy costs down as well as extend the life of your equipment. By the way, in case you are wondering the average life span of an AC unit in Arizona is 16-20 years. We had called regarding the AC not blowing as cold as it normally does, they set an appointment for a tech to come out to check they system. When this monkey showed up he proceeded to tell us how there was a list of things wrong... 11 things to be exact everything from the compressor to the capacitors to the duct work was leaking so on and so forth. This con artist proceeded to write up a service order for almost $5,000 and also wrote up a "new replacement estimate" for a new unit which he insisted we needed for $6500.00. Now if this AC unit were 20 years old I might have considered his claim as legitimate. HOWEVER, our unit is only 8 years old and has been service twice a year since we bought it. It is so clean you can practically eat off the dang thing. This con artist also proceeded to talk my step dad into a finance agreement and even offered that they would take the old "broken" unit away.... well of course they would, and what do you suppose they would do with it? Why resell it of course... to another unsuspecting person who would fall prey to them. Well I may be blonde but I know a bunch a BS when I hear it and this just screamed SCAM....SCAM....SCAM to me. So I jump online and do some research to back me up when I tell my parents no way in the world were they going to spend this kind of money for this nonsense. The monkey did not even bother to check if the freon was low or not...I wonder why. I told my mother...ask yourself this... if you hired this bunch of monkeys to maintain your system and now all of a sudden everything on it is broken or breaking down...who is responsible for the care of the unit? What did they do or not do in order for all of a sudden to the point of no repair? I insisted that she call a reputable company and after I was able to show her review upon review...mostly all bad on this company she agreed that a 2nd opinion was needed. We called Perry Heating & Cooling....very honest and been in business a long time in this town and have a good reputation for themselves. The next day a nice man from Perry came out and said our unit was in great shape and very well maintaned, which of course we already knew that. The only problem was a capacitor and the freon was a few pounds low....just like I concluded after doing some research online. Imagine my parents delight they just saved $6000 that they did not have to begin with. Needless to say they signed up for a maintenance service plan with Perry and called this bunch of monkeys and said cancel the new AC, cancel our service plan and we do not want to ever see you back on our doorstep again. They are also a subcontractor of HOME DEPOT..... which is how we found them in the first place and we reported them to Home Depot as well. I hope they cut ties with them as this company is the ripoff I have seen since Bernie Madoff. If you see them around your neighborhood don't walk the other way but RUN the other way.

Terrible! All of the Customer Service Representatives for Orangutan are located in Phoenix. They refuse to listen to their customers and are obviously trying to get you off the phone as quickly as possible, when you call. I paid approx. $850.00 to have the outside unit of our heat pump, disconnected and then reconnected 2 days later. We had a water main line leak,, located directly under the cement pad, that the heat pump condensor unit was sitting on. The plumber could not repair the water line leak without having the heat pump unit completely disconnected and moved. The cement pad had to be moved as well. The regular technician from Orangutan, who had provided a/c service for us previously, could not do the job. Evidently, he did not have the right equipment. The technician that was sent to our rental property disconnected the unit, as we requested. We asked him to return 48 hours later, to reconnect the unit after the Plumber repaired the Water line. We stood by the technician, as he called the Phoenix Orangutan Office to schedule a return Appt. for the next day and requested that we be the first call of the day. The technician confirmed the Appt. date and time with us after calling Phoenix. We were to meet him at the property @ 8:00 a.m. The plumber repaired the water line. The cement pad and heat pump unit were carefully put back in place. We arrived @ the house 8:00 a.m. to meet the Orangutan Technician as planned. The technician did not show up! At 10:00 a.m. we called the Phoenix Orangutan Office to find out what was going on. No one @ Orangutan would or could tell us why their Orangutan technician, had not arrived for the scheduled appointment to reconnect our heat pump unit @ our rental property. After 8 phone calls and a discussion with both the Technician Supervisor and a Marketing Supervisor, we were told that our technician was in Sierra Vista providing service to another Orangutan Customer. We had been "bumped" to a later time slot that day with no notice. No one @ orangutan apologized for our inconvenience. Keep in mind we are @ our rental property waiting outside for this technician to arrive. There was no a/c, so it wasn't any cooler inside the house. The technician finally arrived late in the afternoon. When we questioned him regarding what had happened, he told us that he had no choice, his supervisor in Phoenix, told him to go to a job in Sierra Vista, instead of keeping our scheduled appointment. The same Technician Supervisor in Phoenix had lied to us and told us a different story. Since the heat pump unit was reconnected it is not working properly. I was quoted a price of approx. $400.00 to disconnect and reconnect the heat pump unit by another a/c company. Orangutan quoted a price of approx. $500.00. The actual cost was approx. $850.00. The Orangutan technician blamed the extra cost on refrigerant and materials. The house is now vacant, so we left the a/c off or set the thermostat @ a high temp. after it was reconnected. Just 6 weeks later, when we turned on the a/c to keep workers who are remodeling our bathrooms cool, the outside unit immediately began icing up/ freezing and runs constantly. When I called Orangutan regarding the new problem with the unit, I was told it would cost me an additional $154.00 to have a technician come back to do "diagnostics". My Husband was angry and we did not schedule an appointment for that day. When the icing/freezing problem continued I did research on-line. I also called and questioned personnel @ 2 other tucson based a/c companies, regarding what could be causing this type of problem. They both said a freon leak was the most likely cause. I called Orangutan again. I had to threaten to call the Arizona State Attorney General's Office / Division of Consumer Affairs and speak to the Orangutan Marketing Supervisor to schedule a "no charge" appointment. I insisted that the same technician come back, to recheck the unit. Once again, the technician was late. I had to call Phoenix 3 times to find out if and when he was coming. Once again, I am waiting outside @ an empty rental property. When the technician finally arrived he was apathetic @ best. He decided that the unit was low on freon, but had no leaks. I didn't seem him check for any leaks. When questioned regarding how the freon could be low, when there were no leaks, he said he should have "topped it off" when he reconnected it weeks before. There was ice on the unit again, one day after the Technician recharged it with freon. I will schedule an appointment with another a/c company to diagnose and fix the problem. Orangutan is not customer friendly and at this point I absolutely question the competence, training, professionalism and dedication of their employees. I feel that I have been "scammed". I had absolutely no problems at all with this heat pump until Orangutan disconnected and reconnected the unit. I do not know why Home Depot has contracted with this company to do their heat pump installations. They are awful! Buyer Beware! Please read reviews and check with the BBB before doing business with this Company.

I had problems with the breaker continuing to break so I called Orangutan for service. They came out and said that the only problem was a $.50 fuse and he also installed an additional breaker at my fuse box for the unit. He then had to return the next day and another tech said that my compressor was gone. The electrician that I had to come check out my electricity said that all of the problems were at the air conditioner box. I wanted a second opinion before I had Orangutan come back out once they ordered a new compressor. I was without air for four days while waiting for the compressor to be shipped from Rheem. They didn't even check to see if it was under warranty. I had Intelligent Design Heating and Cooling come out for a second opinion and he showed me where Orangutan had wired the capacitor backwards so that the compressor would surge to over 110 amps and burn up. They set me up so that they could sell more service and parts at a much bigger ticket price. The air conditioner was only 4 years old so the Intelligent design guy called Rheem right in front of me and arranged to have my warranty pay for all of the parts that Orangutan had ruined. He came out the next day at 10:00 am and installed the new part and showed me how Orangutan had wired everything backwards so it would blow my unit. The parts were labeled so he explained that the backwards wiring had been done on purpose or the tech was totally inept. If you ever use Orangutan, I pity you for your choice cause they ALWAYS find something wrong that need to be replaced. Oh, the capacitor that was wired wrong was also the wrong size. They had installed a 7.5 capacitor when right on the unit it read that a 10.5 was to be used. NEVER use Orangutan.

Response from Orangutan Home Services
We offer a 100% money back guarantee so the bill for Sunday's emergency visit including the replacement of the fuse was refunded. Orangutan was called out to the Roger’s home on a Sunday 6/2/2013 for a complaint about the unit blowing warm air. We were last out there on 9/1/2012 for a no-charge maintenance agreement check-up where all was in working condition. At that time, the technician found a fuse blown in the main control board and was informed about the circuit breaker repeatedly tripping (This is typically caused by a bad compressor or bad circuit breaker). The system was cooling when our technician departed, however we advised for an electrician to inspect the breaker. On our return visit we found the compressor had failed and the replacement part was ordered. With regards to the customer's complaint that the Run Capacitor was not the correct one and was installed improperly… We installed a 10uf Run Capacitor on 7/3/2007 and then changed it out again for free on 5/17/2008. We also show an 80uf Capacitor changed out on 8/17/2011 and a 15uf Capacitor changed out on 2/28/2012. If the other company’s claims are true where is the invoice showing this 7.5uf capacitor and why did it take so long for the system to breakdown? We are sorry to learn a long time customer has lost faith in our company. But we hope that our 100% money back guarantee and this response will enable us to continue to maintain our business relationship. The bill for the Sunday emergency visit and fuse was refunded in full since we do offer a 100% money back guarantee. It is our goal to provide honest service with well trained and high integrity technicians to Orangutan customers. Overall our customers agree with our integrity and honesty as we are now one of the largest HVAC companies in Arizona and we're celebrating 20 years in business.

We were very pleased and very happy with the responsiveness of their customer service as well as their installers. They did an excellent job with installing these air conditioning units, which go on top of the roof of a two story buildings they did a tremendous job of taking down the old unit, but prepping the area for the new units and installing them. They did a good job showing my renter how to operate the thermostat. The two fellows that did the installation did fine. Then we got calls to see if we were satisfied. The price was right.

The technician inspected my roof vents from both the back and the front of my home and stood on a ladder so that he could see into my attic. The technician gave me an estimate for the insulation, told me that I needed ten (10) additional roof vents, and went through a long presentation on his computer about the roof vents. He then proceeded to give me a hard sell, saying that if I purchased that day, there would be a 10% discount and that his manager would "throw in" without charge some of the roof vents. I wanted to get insulation installed and I was worn out by the "presentation" and the pressure from the technician so I agreed to purchase. The technician then called his manager to confirm the sale and it turned out the cost would be more than the technician had stated. I felt taken advantage of and on the next business day, I called the technician's manager and asked that the sale be cancelled. The manager was very reasonable, agreed to cancel the sale, and sent me some information on the company's insulation product that I had requested but the technician had not been willing to provide. I later had other estimates for attic insulation and was told by the individuals providing the other estimates that I had plenty of roof vents.

What started out to be a service call became a purchase. Fidel the service technician was knowledgible about the A/C problem. He also knew the non benefits of my (sorry) home warranty plan; they wouldn't cover a new unit. I agreed upon a unit, the next business day Jeff came to take measurements. The following day Landon and his co-worker(sorry he deserves credit too, but I don't recall his name) came to install unit. They were on time, knew what they were doing, were able to answer our questions, cleaned up very well, showed us how to program thermostat and discussed acessesing the filter for cleaning. Jeff came out a few days later to install new vents that were needed. He explained how and frequency of filter cleaning. I talked to Christina on two occassions, pre and post installation and she was very upbeat and helpful. I spoke to Ron about a billing question he was most helpful and followed through, the next day, with a overpayment refund I had coming. My overall experience was with your company was great ,because you have pleasant and knowledgible people working for you. The entire experience was "stress free" which was so important to us.

They showed up on time and did what they said they would. They were also relatively inexpensive. The repair guy was a nice fellow.
Description of Work: They did an annual checkup. They changed the filter, checked the Freon levels, and cleaned the coils.

They arrived early and completed the installation of 6 roof vents in about 2 hours, they were professional and kept me informed as to what was going on the whole time.

They provided mis-information, an no explanation of the process or products. They didn’t fix the A/C, lied about fixing it, and their price is higher than an other companies. They put freon in a leaky unit, so two weeks later when the freon was gone we had to call them again. The service man was extrememly rude, they insulted me and would walk through my house without permission.
Description of Work: He came out two or three times last fall for repairs. They talked us into a maintenance contract on a 12 year old unit.

I originallly bought a discounted annual maintenance visit through Home Depot. The service person told me all sorts of things were wrong with my 2 units, and that I immediately need $600 worth of repairs. But if iI bought a 3 year maintenance plan they wouldn't charge me for the repairs. I foolishly did. Later in the season , one of my units stopped working, they came out promptly and told me the repair would cost $600. Well it was really hot so i told them to go ahead. I later learned from another servicer that the repair, if needed at all, should have cost $250. I continued to use this company for annual service since i had bought the 3 year service agreement. They repeatedly did not show up when supposed to, tried to upsell something/anything at every visit, and always told me i need new capacitors which they kept replacing and charging for. Finally, with one year left on my contract, i called another company and forfeited the last year of my paid contract. I've been happy ever since.

Absolute disaster and lies from start to finish. Incompetent, sloppy work, totally unreliable. This is not a vendetta review. I can guarantee an ulcer if you deal with them. I cannot speak for their PM's or service but 8 months to get an a/c installed to specs with 5 no shows and one with incorrect equipments.
Description of Work: Made several appointments which were no shows. Install crew arrived with the incorrect system. Parts needed to be fabricated and it took 6 months of back and forth, missed appointments and general lies to get the job finished. Home Depot you should be ashamed of yourselves for making them your recommended provider for a/c. Never again even if my life depended on it.

We purchased a service contract a few years back and the contract doesn't expire for another couple of years. We have them come out twice a year to PM our ac/heat unit. This last time the tech was quick but said that everything looked good. The previous visits we were told that we needed to replace the capacitors. The PM results are inconsistent. We had one time when it was blowing cold air in the winter. We called them out and we were told we needed a new fan motor and new capacitors. We could buy it at that moment for $500 (that was the discounted cost) but we called our home warranty company instead. They charged us the $35 trip charge and bolted the fan in correctly, it had fallen which is why it quit working. They also tested the capacitors and all were fine. I do not trust Orangutan but because of the service contract we are in with them, we let them PM our unit and if anything needs to be replaced or repaired we will decline and call the Home Warranty company again.
Description of Work: They came out to PM our unit AC/Heat because of a service contract we bought into a couple of years back. Everything checked out fine.

We were offered a $39 heat and AC inspection while we were at Home Depot. We agreed and the fellow said he would have the office phone to set-up a date and time. At about 9 AM on Dec 18th a man came to the door to do the inspection. We told him we had no notice of him coming but let him in anyway. He went to work taking the cover off the furnace. In about 5 minutes he said that the coils need cleaning. I asked about vacuuming them but he said that was not good enough and offered to do an acid wash of the coils for $165. As our furnace is quite old but working fine, we agreed as he said it would extend the life of the furnace. He mixed some fluids out at his truck and came back in the front door to access the furnace. He was finished in about 15 minutes and them wanted to sell us an annual service contract for 3 years at $531. We were not ready to commit to that so he said he would schedule a complimentary AC and plumbing check so we could see what their annual services would include. After he left, the furnace seemed to be off. We had a look and the furnace was on at the switch but the flame was not on. We could smell gas. We had to turn it off and relight the pilot to restart the furnace. The day after he left we found acid spots on our tile floor where he had dripped the solution through the house. I know it was dripped onto our carpet too, but we cannot see any damage there. There was also marks from the acid on the street outside our home. We did not report this to them. We have not heard from them for any other inspection which is fine with us.

Response from Orangutan Home Services
I am the owner of Orangutan Home Services and after being made aware of the poor service grade I immediately contacted the customer to discuss. We offered to fix the blemished tile but the customer stated he thought it was cleaned up already. I apologized to the customer and offered to replace the tile and insure the technicians are reminded to be more careful when handling chemical cleaners in or around work areas. The customer agreed the work was an accident and the work performed was performed sufficiently. The customer stated he would continue using our services and will notify the office in the future if they ever have issues again. For their troubles we extended their complimentary one-year maintenance program to two years. Ron Schuman
