Legacy was hired by my sister to help remodel the bathrooms at her house. At the start of the project Legacy was prompt and very helpful, but as time passed the job dragged on for months longer than estimated and the price rose as their attention to detail and responsiveness dropped. As my family took off work and arranged to have people at the house so they could work, they repeatedly failed to show up when scheduled, without even letting them know. In addition, when they did show up it was often only one person who was unable to do the work needed alone! All in all nothing could ever make us chose Legacy again or recommend them to ANYONE! Despite the good reviews they had in the past (yes, we checked the BBB) before selecting them, they were a waste of time and money and we had to pay someone else to clean up what they did.

We hired Legacy to redo our laundry room. It cost us somewhere in the $30,000 range which is absolutely ridiculous for a laundry room. We could have redone the whole kitchen for that cost. They installed defective cabinets and did not want to replace them. They are peeling all over the place and there are splinters coming off of them. They should have investigated the company prior to instal because it is not the customers responsibility to be educated about quality and durability of cabinets. That is why we hired them so they would find the best quality materials. They also damaged an area on the cabinets and the dry wall was not done well and it looks horrible with rippling all over by the door. Overall the whole project was an overpriced disaster. I will never use them again. They also do not disclose costs of each item so everything is a mystery and you just get totals so you have no way to know how much cabinets are how much counter is and so on. It is probably because you are paying for their fancy office in Scottsdale with a secretary. They also gave us estimates on some other projects and then we got second opinions and were quoted less than half as much. They also could not come up with solutions to many of our other problems in the house when other contractors immediately came up with answers. The whole project took months and months and many of our projects we also were going to do with them never even started because they came up with no solutions and we just waited and waited and nothing was happening. So we finally gave up and hired other people for the other projects and I am glad we did because we are paying half for everything! The laundry is still not finished.
Description of Work: Horrible experience, overpriced, installed defective cabinets!

Response from Legacy Design Build Remodeling
Despite this client's remarks, there's no way she could have redone her kitchen for $30,000 with the level of finishes she demanded; and her laundry room cost this much because of the selections she made for cabinets and countertops. She insisted on environmentally-friendly products - right down to the sub-deck under the countertop...with no glue; and we found a cabinet manufacturer that could provide what she wanted, but we cautioned her that we had no experience with them and didn't know what to expect. As it turned out, the cabinets didn't offer the same quality as what we normally provide, but the company provided a factory-trained refinisher to make the necessary repairs; and she approved the work, once it was completed. With respect to delays, the cabinet situation added considerable time to the production schedule, as did a custom door that was ordered by the client late in the project, which took over twelve weeks for delivery. In addition, the client had a baby during the course of the project and asked us not to perform any work for several weeks, and apart from the baby, she had family visit and again asked us to not schedule any work while they were there. All of the delays (exclusive of the cabinet issue, resulted from the actions of the client. To the best of our knowledge, all of the work completed satisfactorily. On February 21, she signed a close-out form, indicating that all punch work had been completed; and she paid the final bill. We provide a five-year warranty; so, if there are any unresolved issues, we would happily address them just as we do with all other clients. She has not notified us of any lingering issues. As an additional note, we noticed leaks at a patio door on the second story and at the fireplace chimney. We needed to remove the door and chimney to understand what was causing the leaks, but she refused to let us do so. A short time later, we had a rain storm; and we offered to send two team members to her home to cover the door and chimney. However, she refused, and they both leaked. We provided no estimates to her for any of this unrelated work but told her we could provide the repairs on a "time and materials" basis. Again, she refused.

We signed the agreement in December 2010, and before they began, we paid Legacy $4000 design fee plus another $39,000.00 totaling $43,000.00. Less than two weeks into the job, we recognized that additional minor work to the bathroom was necessary: Replacement of 35 sq. feet of floor tile and replacement of the existing sink/vanity/mirror with a new wall-mounted sink and mirror. (We would supply the sink and the mirror). I was presented with a "change order" for the new work totaling $5789.97. There were 25 line items on the change order, but only 3 of them pertained to the new work. I expressed my concern about the price especially because there were line items on the change order that duplicated items in the original scope of work. By mid-January 2011, Legacy had not corrected the change order and insisted that we sign or else the work would stop. I met with President of Legacy, MIKE DANIEL in late January 2011 at the Legacy office. He assured me that Legacy would treat us fairly and that everything would be properly credited. He told me they would account for all undone work and remove any extra charges as appropriate. MIKE DANIEL said "Trust me, when I reconcile the job all credits will be given and it will be fair." Based on the promise of MIKE DANIEL, I signed the change order as it was written (adding 35 sq. feet of floor tile and hanging the sink and mirror). Overall the workmanship and delivery was better than satisfactory. Nevertheless huge issues became clear and Legacy failed to properly address them in a professional manner. Legacy failed to install soundproofing in some of the new walls. Legacy represented that the change order work required new plans and permits (which Mike Daniel told me were for the installation of the change-order bathroom sink), but I later learned from the City of Scottsdale that Legacy never applied for additional plans or permits related to the change order. We did not receive credit for items in the original bid that were not needed like outlets and switches until I later brought them to their attention. Legacy had to correct their mistake I brought to their attention when they initially installed hollow doors for the new room when solid core doors were specified in the plan. Only a few items were properly fixed. When I met at Legacy with owners Mike Daniel and Mark Olsen March 31, 2011, they tried to strong-arm me into payment rather than listen to my valid claims. After the meeting, I sent Legacy a 5-page, detailed letter in April 2011 identifying 14 areas of disagreement. Then, during this critical period of our negotiations, I injured my right shoulder requiring rotator-cuff surgical repair on April 25, 2011. Worse, my mother's health deteriorated further in May 2011 and we began a death vigil by her side. NONE OF THIS MATTERED TO LEGACY OR MIKE DANIEL. They revised their reconciliation, but still sought an unfair final payment. Their lawyer hounded me despite knowing my mother was near death and that I had been rehabbing my painful surgery wound. In early June 2011, Legacy sued us for the unpaid amount they claimed was owed. My mother died on June 21, 2011. When the death delayed our legal response, Legacy sought default judgment. Legacy acted in a heartless fashion. We never denied that we owed Legacy some more money, we just disagreed with their calculation of how much. But Legacy treated us like cheats and liars. Anyone considering doing business with Legacy should be aware of how they behaved towards us in 2011.
Description of Work: We hired Legacy without getting competitive bids because my mother was dying and we wanted her home. Legacy is always highly recommended by local radio personality, Rosie Romero, and Rosie on the House. We needed to convert a dining area with an adjacent bathroom into a "parent's suite" so mother could come live with us in our home during the last few months of her life. An existing space was converted to a parent's suite. Access to an adjacent bathroom was created via pocket door. The bathroom fixtures needed replacement to accommodate a wheelchair. The proximity of the new room to the kitchen required the installation of materials to deaden the sound. The existing carpet and tile were converted to all tile with transitions. We paid out of pocket for the bathroom fixtures about $3000.00. Legacy's initial estimate for the work was $47,000.00 and they added another $5789.97 for some additional, minor work which became the basis of dispute between us and Legacy.

[member name removed] is an attorney licensed to practice in the state of Arizona, and he used his knowledge of Arizona’s legal proceedings to avoid responsibility for paying the final amount due on his signed contract & change order and to cause Legacy to incur legal fees equaling the amount of the final billing. When Legacy was awarded a judgment against [member name removed] for the full amount due (including legal fees), he filed bankruptcy. And although his statements here make him sound like a victim, his actions clearly demonstrated otherwise.

The guy that was sent out had a personality was very off putting. He talked to us and then left. I got the feeling that I did not receive their best person. They just did not make a good impression on me. I wanted to talk to the actual contractor but I was told that the company sends out someone first so I was not able to talk to the contractor directly.

It's unfortunate that one of our representatives behaved in a way that is inconsistent with the company's values and goals; and had I been aware of it at the time, I would have asked for the opportunity to send another of Legacy's highly-qualified Project Consultants. Our project consultants have contracting knowledge and experience and are well qualified to address most remodeling issues. Those issues that exceed their experience is supported by other members of the team who are more technically proficient. Our team is made up of Certified Remodelers and Certified Kitchen/Bath Designers, general contractors and licensed architects. In addition, we employ a firm named, Guild Quality, to survey all of our clients to assess their relative levels of satisfaction and to provide feedback for improvement.

They are incredible. The work was spectacular and they are really willing to work with you. If something was really important to me, they made sure to help out. They were here every day on time and finished ahead of time. It looks incredible.
Description of Work: They remodeled our kitchen. They knocked out the walls and went into the garage. They changed the rooms of the house to make the floor plan much nicer and easier to move around. This also made the house look larger. Is was a very involved project. They helped with the design that I wanted and explained things with me along with the process and made suggestions to make things work out. If I ever had any questions they were always available to talk.

It's interesting that this client didn't hire us, thought we were too high priced, yet wanted more detail in the proposal. Legacy is more expensive because we employ the most highly-trained individuals, utilize the most sophisticated design software and offer the most extensive warranty in the industry in Arizona. Since Legacy is regarded as one of the top remodeling companies in the state, we often have people solicit our ideas, then hire a handyman to complete the work. Many of the calls we receive regularly is to repair the faulty work of other contractors or to finish the work that another contractor abandoned.

Legacy doesn't claim to be the cheapest alternative for remodeling projects; however, we do pride ourselves on a job well done. And we offer a five year warranty, while other remodelers in the Valley only offer the two-year warranty dictated by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. It's been our experience - and I hear this from other remodeling company owners from around the country - that people have unrealistic expectations of what it costs to complete a remodeling project.

We had Legacy come to provide us with a ballpark estimate of the cost for a remodel. The salesman was not willing to really speak about our job until or unless we were willing to give him a $1,500.00 non-refundable down payment or "design fee". The salesman was nice enough but was more interested in holding back any remodeling ideas without this upfront $1,500.00 payment. Other companies have since shared some high level concepts, ideas, and ballpark figures. The Legacy salesman did not even leave a business card let alone a brochure. Everything he told us we pretty much got off their website already. My overall grade would have to be a "D" - not customer oriented with their policy.

Legacy's consultative design approach works best with those discerning clients who have already identified integrity, quality & reliabilty as significant considerations in their selection processes. At Legacy, we won't quote a price without understanding the project design and level of finishes, which dramatically impact costs. While it may be tempting to "throw out a price", get an agreement signed & present costly change otders once the project is underway, we prefer to be completely honest with potential clients from the outset and risk losing their business. This client requested a price quote without sharing any details of the proposed project.

The remodel job in 2008 was not completed. Myself and Legacy spent months trying to develop a plan. We were not able to start to actual remodeling because the plans could not be finalized and the pricing was too high. The issue I have is that I had to spend thousands of dollars, and months to come to the conclusion. In 2010 I asked them to come out and give me an estimate to remodel a bathroom. They will not give any specific information until money is paid to them.
Description of Work: Prior to having my home remodeled, I paid Legacy a fee (about $3000) to develop a plan. I did not use them for the project because I needed the help of a decorator/designer. They did not have such a person on staff. When I got my own, the coordination with Legacy didn't work out. They said they could design, blueprint and remodel my home. After months of trying, after I paid the design fee, I gave up. I hear they are excellent builders/remodelers. I could not get to the actual demolition/rebuild phase.

Legacy's design process was developed to help ensure that our clients' desired projects can be built within the parameters of their established budgets, which isn't always the case.Given the myriad alternative finishes & levels of quality for cabinets, countertops, flooring, lighting & plumbing fixtures, etc., it's difficult for most people to understand the impact of each individual decision upon the total cost of the project. This is the reason our project consultants spend so much time working closely with clients to prioritize the various aspects of their remodeling projects & to help them select finishes. This client didn't want to accept the level of finishes that his budget would allow.

They first came-out and provided an estimate. They started the work during the 4th of July. They ended up finished the project in September. They had a job superintendent that was on the job for about 3 weeks. He was then laid-off because of the economy. The new supervisor hadn’t been in the field for awhile, so it created a bit of a hang-up in the process and getting the work completed on schedule. Overall, they did a really good job, despite the aggravation that I had. They were reliable and did try to correct any problems that we had. They stood behind their work.

There representative arrived on time he was professional , friendly and courteous. After going over what it was I wanted a bid on in as much detail as I could . He made notes then started explaining how Legacy worked . He also explained that he could not give a true bid with-out having his crew coming out and that would cost $2000.00 , he explained that the money would be applied to the project if I hired his company and if I didn't the money was the cost of the estimate . He told me the best he could do was give me a range a HI and LOW end . When he returned a few days later and told me the range he could see my surprise and said we could tweak the price down about $90,000 . Even if we tweaked the price he was $105,000 higher then 2 other contractors. So if you call them get other bids

Legacy’s team of professionals has been providing design/build remodeling services in The Valley since 1988; and we’ve been fortunate enough to establish a reputation for integrity, quality and reliability. In addition, Legacy’s remodeling projects have earned recognition on a national level. Because of the investments we’ve made in superior personnel & equipment, we’re not always the lowest-cost alternative & offering a bid (which necessitates a complete design of the project) provides people with the ability to “shop” our design with less sophisticated competitors. In this case, the Legacy project consultant undoubtedly failed to communicate effectively with the client during preliminary discussions and was never able to establish a rapport. The high & low costs were provided as a possible range – without knowing the specifics of the proposed project. No “crew” is sent to a client’s home before providing a “true bid”; however, during the early stages of the design process, another Legacy team member visits the client’s home to take measurements & photographs. These help the project consultant to provide detailed specifications for the project.
