Hawkeye Landscaping

The job was great. The crew worked hard and there was enough of them to get the job done in the time estimated. So far the plants and trees are doing fine. The grass developed some brown spots, so I called Kelly back to take a look. He sent his super the next day to take a look and he made some adjustments on some of the sprinkler heads and now they are starting to turn green. He said any other problems let him know. That I believe.

They usually charge for an estimate. This man was here for 13 minutes. He did not take a measurement or take a picture. He did not spend time with us at all. Since this was a nonchargeable visit, he did not take much time with us. He showed us a book of his past job, and it was mostly brick work. I needed more plant work done. I asked him to help me with a plant problem, but he could tell me nothing about it, even though he said he has a degree. He kept pushing us on how much money we could spend. Because I did not give him a budget, he could not move forward. He wasted our time. I was really disappointed. I asked him when we could expect his drawings, and he said "maybe a couple days." I do not expect to hear back. He took 3 lines of notes. I was aggravated by all of this.

This was work performed on an abandoned property that we bought for our own use. The house had been vacant for quite some time. The whole yard needed to be reworked, front and back. And although it is a small yard, it wasn't a small job (I understate contract because I'm uncomfortable providing the details of what we paid). We interviewed 3 companies. Hawkeye was the second and was not the cheapest bid we got. But there were question marks with the other two companies, and the reps communication with me during the bidding process gave us confidence. He provided a written quote that was pretty clear about the work they intended to do. The crew arrived on time. They were professional and the foreman was friendly and walked the yard with me so I could explain to him personally what we wanted to get done. There was a *lot* of demolition that needed to be done. The previous owner had istalled hardscape over half of the back yard, extending to the back wall without installing drainage. Much of this had to be removed and the grading repaired so that the yard would drain properly. They salvaged some of the hardscape material to use as caps for planters. They happily planted trees that we'd purchased on our own because we wanted them from a particular nursary. They made repairs to the irrigation system without upselling a bunch of new plumbing, but put new where it was needed. As with all landscaping crews, it's good to have an idea of what you want and agree to the plant placement in advance. It was a pleasure to do business with this company. We've got some follow up work to do and I will call them again if they are available.

He was very professional. His estimate was for $11,000. That was a good estimate. We had a very good experience.

They did an outstanding job for me. They were competitive in terms of their pricing. They made a mistake but they fixed it.

I obtained 3 landscape re-do bids from highly accredited landscapeing companies via Angie's List. I selected Hawkeye Landscaping for several reasons. I never had to leave a message, and the office personnel were friendly, professional and always followed through. Kelly completed the bid and subsequently altered the proposal slightly to better acommodate my budget. The main reason I chose Hawkeye Landscaping was the creativity Kelly demonstrated in his on-the-spot, hand-drawn design after carefully listening to my likes and dislikes. It was better than I could have imagined and exceeded the competition's design ideas by far as I found they wanted me to tell them what I wanted vs create a design. Kelly came across as very sincere and thoughtful about his recommendations and seemed to truly enjoy his work. The project took 1 week to complete as expected and the crew was punctual, informative, courteous and professional. They were all very hard workers and meticulous in their work. The site was kept clean and free of landscape materials and equipment each day which I appreciated very much. The project was organized very well. They installed everything and their prices were good, but their follow up was terrible. They keep on ignoring my phone calls. I told them to come here and take a look at something. They won’t come out here and they won’t even do anything unless they are guaranteed that they get money upfront. They won’t even come out here and tell me anything. I have got plants that are dying and stuff like that. So, I don’t think they are good. They come, write the stuff down and then they are gone.

My irrigation system broke and caused my yard to flood. This company fixed the broken valve that was causing the flooding.

The work went really smoothly. I had someone come to fix a minor leak, and we discussed the possibility of replacing the entire system. I had someone come out on a Thursday to tell me how much it would cost. I decided to go ahead with the repair. Hawkeye came out Monday and Tuesday to install a new system (with piping, valves, etc.). I have lived with it for the rest of the week, and I am very satisfied. Pricing was upfront, and stayed at budget. After everything was complete, I was walked through the new system, and told how to run everything. I will definitely use Hawkeye Landscaping for all my future landscaping needs.

They were on time and they did exactly what they said they were going to do. They did a beautiful job; it was better than what I expected. I had them do more than I originally talked to them about and they handled it beautifully. I am going to use them again in the spring.

I contacted the company for an estimate and they had Gordon come over the next business day to provide pricing for landscaping ideas. He arrived on time and he showed me different things I could do with my yard. My yard was half madison gold rocks and half dead grass. To keep costs down, I chose the same rock to replace the dead grass area. The area is pretty small (maybe 20 ft x 10 ft). The work on my estimate included 5 tons of rock, digging up the grass, laying the plastic, replacing the irrigation system, adding 5 five-gallon plants, and a disposal fee. It came out to be just over $2,000 after the $100 off Angie's list coupon. Since I was being harassed by my HOA to take care of my lawn (despite just recently moving in), I didn't take the time to shop around and compare prices, so I assume this is high, but I am not sure. I looked at the estimate, added up the figures myself, and realized he overcharged me by $200. I believe this was an honest mistake, but you never know (he added up the figures on his phone). I let Gordon know about it, and he deducted it from my bill. The service was scheduled the following week @ 7:00 am. The crew arrived about 45 minutes late and completed the work in about 4 hours. My front yard does look so much better. I did find the price to be high for not doing anything fancy, and I do have a small yard. The foreman had me look at everything to make sure I was satisfied before he left. My only other complaint was that the landscapers did cut my cable while putting in the border. I was without television or internet until Cox was able to come take a look at the problem.

Kevin showed up not only on time, but early (after calling to ask if it was ok the day before, which we agreed to). He was incredibly nice, knowledgeable, and professional. He made note of multiple possible problem points, and addressed each one. Our timer has been running perfectly for the past week, and they gave us an extended warranty in case it acts up again, with Kevin leaving us his cell phone number to call him directly. He also replaced one of our broken drip line heads at no extra cost, and left us with a few extras just in case. Overall, we're very satisfied with the service and we wouldn't hesitate to call them again for future needs.

The service was fit for a king -- courteous person on the phone, next day response to a service call and high quality work. But, it cost a king's ransom as well. I was out of the country and needed someone to fix a leak that I thought might cost $100 to $200. I didn't expect to have a nearly $1000 repair bill, or I would have instructed my wife to ask for estimates from at least one other landscaper. I recommend Hawkeye landscaping for quality work IF you don't mind paying $100/hr for labor on top of service call fees and around five times the retail price for valves and PVC fittings. For example, a Richdel R2400 valve that costs $20.55 on Amazon was billed at $100.00. A vacuum breaker valve was billed at $196.00, 4 feet of schedule 40 PVC pipe cost $8.00, and a 3/4 PVG Tee cost $5.00. Bottom line is that I feel that this company took advantage of my wife with very expensive repairs that "needed to be done" without warning that this would turn into a very expensive 2-visit $1000.00 revamp of a simple 4-valve sprinkler system. That's the reason that professionalism is not rated higher.

This was my first time using Hawkeye, and I can't say enough positive things about dealing with this company. For one, Kelly (the owner) is extremely accessible. He almost always answers his phone directly. In addition, this is one of the most punctual companies I have ever dealt with. If Hawkeye tells you they will be at your home at 1pm, that means 1pm. It is one thing to be very good at your trade, but Hawkeye also adds a degree of professionalism and customer service. I also found their prices to be extremely reasonable and I will soon be using Hawkeye for a much larger landscaping job at another home my wife and I own.

I am a repeat customer. I contacted the company to give me a quote on the job. I've done projects of this type myself, and had read of the importance of a good base for pavers. I excavated the area myself so that there was sufficient depth for a good base of pea stone or crushed rock and the sand in which to place the pavers. I had another company come to haul away the excavated material at my cost. I don't think I was given enough of a break on the price for my labor and costs to prepare the worksite. The price "break" secondary to this negotiation was treated as a substitute for the Angie's List discount coupon I also presented. I'd made the area absolutely ready to receive the installation of base material on the day prior to the work being done. We agreed on a price and a date for the job to be done. The contractor and I had discussed base material, but on the day of the job a similar material was substituted. On the day of the job, a base of 1/4" minus granite was used and was compacted using a gas powered plate compactor. The work team led by Dave returned later the same day to lay the landscaping fabric down and to set the pavers in sand. The area looks good and the pavers are installed well in a workmanlike fashion. The work was done in one day. The job is yet to be tested for its ability to hold up to water like in monsoon season.

I thought that their pricing was good. The courtyard and patio turned out really well. The landscaping work was okay, though. I would have done it a little differently if I had known a little better about plants. I am not sure if I will use them for landscaping work. I have recommended them for doing the patios and walkways. I would probably use another company for landscaping work.

Kelly came out and worked with my wife and me to design the yard. When the original plan proved to be more expensive than we had hoped, he made suggestions( fewer boulders, smaller plants, etc.) to bring the cost down. Once we agreed on a plan, Kelly met with us at a nursery to select plants, and at a quarry to select gravel and boulders. The work crew, led by Kelly's brother Kevin, was professional, hard working and efficient. They completed the job in 2 days, including the irrigation system and including treating our front yard for weeds and trimming 2 trees. When a water valve on the irrigation system started leaking a day later, I called Kelly and he promptly had someone come out and fix it. My wife and I found Kelly and Kevin to be friendly, likeable, experienced, competent professionals, and we would not hesitate to highly recommend Hawkeye Landscapers to anyone. We love our new back yard.

What a great experience! I just planted the winter grass and suddenly my sprinkler system quit. Called Hawkeye and they sent Mike out the same day. The man is amazing. He deduced the problem within minutes and then tuned up the sprinkler heads on the entire system. Plus he gave me some important hints on maintaining the lawn. So 5 stars - couldn't have been any better!

My call was returned quickly. I was very pleased that they could come out so quickly (less than two hours after my call) since I was leaving town the next day for a week. Michael identified the problem immediately and also pointed out that my control box was not working properly. He fixed the leak and replaced the control box in less than 45 minutes. He was timely, professional, and made sure that I understood how to operate the control box before he left. I was very pleased. I did not get competitive bids, so I have no sense of what their pricing was relative to their competitors so I cannot assess how their prices compare.

They did some hardscaping and pavers work. They also built walkways and installed a full irrigation system. They did a great job.

They were very good, they came out quickly. They were just higher than what I could pay.

Quoting employee was prompt, helpful, and provided a written, itemized quote on the spot with options depending on a few different ideas I had. Also provided some good booklets on local AZ xeroscaping plants. It boiled down to cost between Hawkeye and another company, and Hawkeye was more expensive. Overal would recommend to add to anyone's consideration list for landscaping projects,

We found Hawkeye Landscaping through Angie's List, and have been very satisfied with them. We worked wtih Kelly to define our project, and then Dave supervised the crew. They were punctual, responsive (when we asked for slight changes to the design during the construction), and very professional. The finished product is truly show-room quality. The back yard has become our favorite "room" - even though Arizona is a little warm in June, we are spending hours outside every evening enjoying the very natural-looking grass "carpet" and the beautiful fountain!

Call someone and they are not interested in even calling back? Not a good sign!
