Hawkeye Landscaping

I obtained several estimates to have my side yards and back yard landscaped. This included a couple of irrigation lines, lots of pavers, and a bench constructed of stacked stone sides and a flagstone cap. Hawkeye Landscaping’s estimate was comparable to most of the others, but our interactions with the office staff and with Kelly distinguished them from their competitors. The office staff was professional and friendly, and Kelly was personable, knowledgeable, and seemed honest and sincere. Since we were having the landscaping work performed while we were out of town, these characteristics were crucial. The crews were punctual, proficient, and meticulous. Although I was not present at the job site, I was kept informed of their progress. The work was completed on time, and the final result exceeded my expectations. Their attention to detail and pride in theircraft is evident. Most importantly, Hawkeye stands behind their work. We had a minor leak that was caused by a small pebble that had found its way into one of the sprinkler valves which resulted in the valve staying open. This was discovered late on a Friday afternoon, but there was a crew at my property promptly to repair it. I cannot say enough good things about Hawkeye Landscaping, and I would recommend them to anybody. They will also be my first – and only - choice for any additional landscaping work I need in the future.

We had some work done to the back and sides of our house. Planted some trees, border work, new drip system and had pavers installed. We had some problems with them. We knew they weren't the cheapest. They were on time. The crew was fine, but the site coordinator we had to deal with was the problem.

They were very professional and responsive to all our concerns and remained flexible about changes that developed during construction. The bar was built a little higher than we had agreed to, so our construction manager gave us a discount on a higher foot rest and kick plate. We are very pleased with the final result and can happily recommend Hawkeye Landscaping. (See pictures).

Everything went off without a hitch. There was one crew for retaining wall and another for paver installation. Both crews worked tireless. The foreman and salesperson kept in touch and were available when I needed to ask questions.

We love our patio, the work was completed when scheduled.

They did a fantastic job! The trench/pipe ended up being 85' long. Our backyard no longer floods. We lost 1 1/2 of the japanese privets but that's due to weather. We will have them back to do the other half of the back yard as well. I included a picture of what the yard looked like after a hard rain. Now, after a very hard rain, it takes only a couple minutes to drain rather than a couple few days.

Like many contractors these days, it was great up until the home stretch. You may want to sit because this is going to get lengthy ... The demo and layout went well. Early into the layout I questioned them about sprinkler placement and was assured there would be plenty of coverage with no standing water, nor dry spots. I should have listened to my gut, but I placed my trust in the company that had been doing this for 20 years. Many of the sprinklers were installed crooked (they need to be straight vertically to provide the proper coverage). I brought this up and was assured they would be straightened before the sod was laid. Some were. When I asked about it again, I was told they would work themselves into place. Again, I deferred to his experience versus my nagging gut. The paver patio was laid out well, as were the paver borders. With the drip system in place, they installed the landscape fabric, decorative plants, and "river rock". That's in quotes because there is definitely some river rock in the mix, but it was equally tainted with granite and rock hard mud. Basically the cheapest excuse for river rock there could be. We have river rock installed elsewhere, so it doesn't take much to look at one, then the other to notice strange things are afoot. Sod was installed with winter grass already seeded in and almost all of it lived (Hallelujah!) But I soon noticed dead, dry grass in a couple areas. It took two weeks of back and fourth to convince them to install another sprinkler to cover the dry areas. On top of that, the installer lied about telling my wife "It doesn't need another head, it just needs to be adjusted." His adjustment included watering the entire paver patio just to barely reach the dry spot (which was completely against their initial advice of "Never waste water on concrete". Rather than taking one more day to check on fit and finish of the install, they bugged out ASAP leaving landscape fabric exposed above the "river rock" in many places, spilled concrete on the new kool deck, and about thirty feet of concrete foot prints on the paver driveway. Not to mention the crooked sprinklers. Now that the heat is on, the Bermuda sod is coming through nicely except for, you guessed it, DEAD, DRY SPOTS. Now, to ease your fears, there are parts of the lawn that are sprouting mushrooms because it's too wet, so their advice of "Leave the sprinklers on longer" isn't going to fly. I'm anxious to see what excuses they come up with to get out of installing a couple more heads to make it right. See, that was what I hammered into the salesman and supervisor ... "You weren't the cheapest bid, but based on your experience and reviews I expect you DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME." I must have said that 50 times. Just take a bit of extra time to make sure you've got it down and everyone can walk away happy. Instead, they would rather come out an additional four or five times and dig holes in the new grass. I'm aware we have high standards. Maybe a bit unrealistic. But if that's the case, don't promise to perform to those expectations then get upset when customers hold you to it. Oh, and get this ... We replaced a piece of sod a couple of weeks ago that had never taken root and found they had lain it on the spot where they had been cleaning their concrete buckets and tools. Plus they left the old sprinkler head underneath it as well. I'm going to have to research this new type of fertilizer called mortar and plastic.

Gordon was our contact. He educated us about local plants (we're new to the area) by actually walking through a nursery with us, consulted with us about just how we wanted to landscape the back and front yards. He supervised the workers on and off. They worked very hard and did a fine job. Only one place in the water line needed repair, which they came back right away to fix. NOTE: Our address needs to be changed to 4th DRIVE below!

First off they were the first people to call back! Second we did this whole patio by text and email OVER THE PHONE from 1600 miles away. I told them what i wanted and had a sketch the next day! made a few corrections and sent them the key. Price was right on target! A few days later the material were being installed in my condo patio! I trusted them and they were EXCELLENT! Sent me text pictures as they worked. Did a fabulous job! When i arrived a few days later my patio was already installed! first class ! VERY HAPPY!!

We sent requests for quotes to several highly rated landscapers on Angie's List on December 16, 2015. Kelly, the owner of Hawkeye Landscaping, responded quickly and we made an appointment for an estimate the next day. Kelly consulted with us to understand our landscape design ideas, and made suggestions that improved upon our ideas. One of the reasons we selected Hawkeye was that Kelly was very good and listening and clarifying our ideas. This made us confident that we would get what we wanted. The other landscapers left us with a feeling that their ideas would have too much influence on the outcome. We negotiated a final price and kelly returned on Dec 22 with the final bid statement of work, with an estimated completion time of two weeks and a start date of Dec. 28. They started on the day promised. The final price was competitive with other bids from landscapers that we also felt would provide quality work and timely completion. Their work was quick and efficient. Their employees were professional and courteous. They cleaned up as they worked resulting in a minimum of disruption to our daily routine. Kevin, the project manager, communicated with us regularly answering our questions and clarifying our needs as the project progressed. Kelly stopped by regularly to monitor progress. The few changes made during the job progress were handled within the budget. The project would have been completed in the two weeks, but the heavy rain caused about a 3 day delay. We are very happy with the end result. The backyard landscape enhances the appeal and living environment of our home.

Kelly was extremely responsive and open with suggestions/recommendations. I travel back and forth from Chicago and managed most of the project virtually. We had video conference conversations so I could see progress and ask questions. We had a really complex drainage situation being on the side of a mountain essentially. As I sit here listening to the rain come down it is comforting to know the water is draining away from the house instead of collecting on the patio. The rain reminded me I needed to get out here and put in a review! Kelly's crew was efficient, and cleaned up after themselves. I whole-heartedly recommend Kelly and Hawkeye Landscaping and would use them again in an instant.

After trying to get a landscaping company to even keep an appointment, we turned to Angies List and decided to give Hawkeye a call. It was one of the most amazing experiences we have had working with any type of company. Gordon came out as promised, right on time, and listened to some of our thoughts for completely relandscaping our front yard. We did not have a lot of experience or creativity in formulating a design ourselves and that's where Gordon really stepped up. Our finished yard is beautiful far beyond our expectations, to the point where strangers stop and compliment us. Communication throughout the process was like no other, Angel and his crew were phenomenal, everything was neat and tidy at the end of each day and the job was finished on time. What more could one ask for? My only regret is that I don't have more work for them to do at our home.

One day I noticed water running from my desert-landscaped front yard into the street. I found that the older system--which had been sprinklers for grass lawns--was still in place under the newer one laid for drip, and it had broken. I tried to fix the problem myself and only made it worse, Each time I capped something off, something else would leak. A sprinkler repair contractor came out, took a look, and said "No way I'm taking this on." Hawkeye sent a very experienced technician who went to work, found one problem and fixed it, then found another. He had to come back with parts on another day, but that was fine. On his return visit he fixed the problem and put all the rocks and bricks back in place, within an hour. It was quite a relief. I consider the charge to be very reasonable. I was highly impressed by the competence of the technician.

We were very pleased at the work and the integrity of the workers that did our front yard redesign. We worked with Gordon and he listened to our needs and desires and he did a design for our front yard that we loved. We wanted a front yard that was grass free, uncluttered in plants, classic look, up to date in colored rock, boulders, lights and design yet we didn't want to be doing a lot of future weekly yard work. Gordon was most helpful on plant section and color choices for rocks, rip rap and boulders. The crew was wonderful to work with too. Angel and his team were professional and I can't say enough about their integrity. They were awesome. Angel answered all of our many questions and was so helpful. The work was completed on time and they were flexible with changes. We will be using them again in a few months as we desire to have them update our backyard!

Gordon came through for us again - Hawkeye did our back yard a year ago, and we were so pleased that we invited them back for an encore. Both front and back look great! We had a few issues with the sprinkler system - they ended up replacing all the sprinkler heads for us. Excellent value, great design, great customer service

We hired Hawkeye to do extensive drainage and irrigation work on our front and back yard in early June. We had serious erosion from our side yard gate that was creating a gully in the front yard. I have waited to write a review until now to see how the new systems handled our summer monsoon storms. We have had three heavy storms, and everything is working perfectly. Kelly Burns and his crew were a pleasure to work with. This was our first major outdoor project and we did not know what to expect. We asked three companies for bids and Kelly gave us the quickest response. He came, did some measurements, and gave us a reliable estimate within an hour. One company never got back to us and the other one?s bid was twice as much as Hawkeye for very similar work. At first, we had planned to do just the drainage and irrigation improvements, lay a paver walkway from our side gate to the sidewalk, and replace our outdoor lighting system. But after we saw pictures of some of Kelly?s other projects, we decided to expand the scope: we had our back patio resurfaced with travertine (replacing and improving the drainage pipes), and had our front entryway resurfaced with pavers that matched the new walkway. I was particularly impressed when I asked if we could see a patio that had been done with travertine, and Kelly invited us to his own house to see what he had done there. We also had the granite gravel ?refreshed? in the front and back yard. We are very happy with the results. Dave, the foreman, and his crew showed up on time and were friendly and cheerful during some of the hottest days of the summer. They were all happy to answer any questions we had and made sure we understood what was being done every day. The projects were completed on time and within budget. We highly recommend Hawkeye landscaping.

Dealing with Kelly and his crews was an excellent experience from beginning to end. They were prompt, professional, quick, and did a fantastic job on an investment property that definitely needed some work. Although the job did cost a considerable amount, for what they did, it was money well spent.

Gordon was professional and gave some good ideas. The work was done in the set amount of time. We went picked the plants and the rock before hand. Everything looked good except couple of plants were too close to the ground that their branches were on the rocks that we put in. But, i was told, that should be fine. Let us wait and see once the plants hold roots and start growing. The prices were expensive (i think). But, the work was fine. No complaints. The plants have 90 day guarantee (i think). I will have to call him if the plants do not survive. Couple of them are trying hard to keep up with the arizona heat. The others seem to be doing good. Wife gave me crap that we did not pick Roses. Even Gordon did not suggest Roses when I was out with him picking the plants (not that it is his job). :-) Anyways, i blamed it on him so i can get off the hook.

I called to schedule an appointment to get an estimate for landscaping. I spoke with a woman at Hawkeye who took my information and said Gordon would return my call. I never received a return call which was disappointing considering the large number of positive reviews here on Angie's List.

I called the provider to get an estimate for an irrigation repair that involved possibly removing a portion of a paver sidewalk. The girl I spoke with on the phone informed me that they don't give estimates for repair and that it would be $125 for the first hour and then whatever it cost after that. It seems the provider expects you to engage their services without any idea what the potential cost might be. The approach wasn't very professional or helpful. I called another highly rated provider on Angie's list and they were happy to come out and give an estimate. Hawkeye lost my business for this repair and for any future projects.

I wanted to completely redo the front and back yard landscaping given both were very bland and outdated when I purchased the home. I set the budget at $10k and quickly found that was too low for what I wanted to do - boulders, pavers, up lighting, removal of trees, more rock, raising fence, painting fence, new plants/shrubs and trees, new drip system. I obtained quotes from three different companies. The quotes ranged from $15k - $23k. Hawkeye's quote was the highest ($23k), however they had the best designs (one of the other places required pre-payment before even seeing the design) and were the most responsive and helpful. I decided to increase my budget to $15k and ultimately ended up paying a total of $17k because I decided to extend the back patio with pavers and do a paved walkway leading to the door in the front. I was able to get most of what I wanted and am extremely pleased with the finished product. The first time Hawkeye came out, he listened to my thoughts and ideas and asked me about likes and dislikes. I showed him pictures/examples of what I'd found online and he showed me pictures of the work they'd done. He measured the yards, drew up the designs and then priced it out for me - came in at $23k. When I decided I wanted to work with Hawkeye, the representative came out for a second time and we talked about where we could cut costs without having too much impact on the finished product. I was very pleased with the willingness to work with me on the cost without jeopardizing the finished product. In addition, the representative met me at the local nursery and took note of plants and trees I liked and disliked, sharing with me tips on which ones required more or less water and maintenance. Overall, I am very pleased with the service from Hawkeye and the overall finished product. I will definitely use them again!
