I build and service desktop and laptop PC computers. Through remote access software I am able to resolve most computer issues over an internet connection. This software allows me to see your screen and control your computer to resolve your critical (and not so critical) issues while you watch. I have been consulting on computer issues since 1983 and have written a computer column for a magazine for more than 10 years. As a VAR (Value Added Reseller) I sell hardware, software and accessories. In the Phoenix and Tucson markets I perform on-site diagnostics and assistance with PCs and networking issues, connectivity, and other technology solutions. Assist in importing and exporting of address books, contact lists and favorites from AOL, MSN, Comcast, Cox and other major online e-mail services. Since January 2012 members have purchased more than 400 Big Deals for computer tune-ups and consulting. I have more than 375 "A" ratings.

The entire experience was beyond what I expected. The owner, Joe Shipley, provided clear instructions in preparation for our appointment and ably performed every task set out therein. He spent more than two hours with me and after he was done my 10-year old computer was performing better. His follow-up instructions have helped me keep it running well. He is a customer service-oriented businessman with a wonderful -- and patient -- "bedside manner." I have asked him a question via phone and e-mail on at least one occasion since the original consultation and he readily replied (at no charge). In short, I recommend him without reservation.

Joe Shipley worked with me using remote login and reviewed my computer, cleaned it up , fixed all the issues and taught me how to clean it ad hoc using a program he left on my computer. I was admittedly skeptical and that was soon re-leaved! Great Experience! Joe installed and left a cleaning application on my computer which I use regularly and it keeps my computer running quickly and efficiently. I have contact Joe several times since our initial consultation and work and he has always been helpful. Recently, this past week, I contacted Joe to help me with a printing problem. In less than 5 minutes (after I had labored to find a solution on my own) Joe had my printer working! Now that is what I call a professional!!! I recommend Smart Idea/Joe Shipley 100%! A+ rating.

Joe was very professional and courteous. He took the necessary steps to help me understand what was going on with my computer and to get it cleaned up. He made me aware of the additional cost over the original special and was willing to do what he could within the 1 hour time frame. I chose to continue to complete the computer clean up. He stayed on the phone with me the entire time and walked me through everything he was doing. Was great to work with!

My computer is not a new one, but had been useful. It suddenly stopped working properly for online work. I have a bundled plan from my provider & the other 2 services were working fine, so I knew it was my computer & not the provider. I called Joe. He took over my computer & started to work. When I checked out the online banking, Joe, like a gentleman, got out of my computer so didn't see any of my banking info, and then came back in to continue doing his work. At the end of the half hour, my computer was humming along like new! This is the third time I've called Joe, and he's been superb each time. Distance doesn't seem to make any difference to him, and I trust him completely with my computer. Another thing I really appreciate about Joe, is that he has great patience, good humor & explains what it is that he's doing as he does his work. He is definitely my "go-to" guy when it comes to computer work!
Description of Work: I was not able to get online with any ease or in a a timely manner. Once I did get online, the responses were extremely slow, and I wasn't able to access my online banking at all. Joe took over my computer, cleaned out some unused programs & "debugged" it. Now it's working like new!

It went very well. No problems and all my expectation were met and exceeded.
Description of Work: I contacted Joe after reading about him on Angie's List. My computer kept crash dumping and I wasn't sure what to do. He spend 15 minutes with me on the phone, at no cost, explaining what might be wrong and what I could do about it. After a few weeks, I decided to get a new computer and I used Joe to transfer all of my data and programs onto my new computer. He did a great job and helped load appropriate malware for me. He took as much time as I needed to help me get comfortable with my new computer and understand how to protect it from viruses. He is very professional and is a very nice person to work with. I highly recommend him and will continue to use him whenever I have questions or concerns. He was a great find! Thanks Angie's List!

We set up a day/time to do the service on my computer. He was very friendly and explained exactly what he was going to do. He took control of my machine and completed a number of clean up operation. He completed a little more work on my system, which took it over the time I had already paid for. I was a little disappointed the I wasn't told ahead of time what the additional would cost. The other thing that happened a few weeks later was that someone accessed my e-mail and diverted it all to another server. Since no one else has access to my computer I was concerned that someone on Mr. Shipley's end still had access to my computer. I immediately deleted any of the sites he had me connect to for the service. There hasn't been any issues since then. As far as the clean up work, my computer was faster and did perform more efficiently.
Description of Work: The service was a clean up of my computer system.

As I never like to receive less than perfect reviews, I’d like to put the member at ease and say that I am the only person working at my end, and that I always turn off the remote access software I use when I disconnect from a client. The Internet is a scary place and there are thousands of people continuously attempting to get into any computer they can find. My guess is that lack of a strong firewall and other Internet protection software might have permitted a hacker to enter the member’s system, find her email password, and move her account to another server. The Big Deal the member purchased states that not all tuneup work can be completed in one hour, and that my hourly consulting rate applies for time spent beyond the first hour. Additionally, when this member purchased the Big Deal I sent her a welcome letter that contains the following language: “The Deal entitles you to a credit of one (1) hour of computer consulting upon presenting a valid, un-redeemed coupon issued by Angie’s List. It is my goal to have your issue(s) resolved quickly and efficiently and to make you a satisfied customer. Many of my customers have been with me for more than 10 years. Unfortunately, not all cleaning can be accomplished in one hour. Obviously each system’s conditions are unique. Tune-up time varies depending upon the processor, amount of memory, extent of storage space used and the type of Internet connection available, to highlight a few of the most important variables. My experience is that 95% of tune-ups take from 1.5 to 2 hours. This time can be shortened if you run some programs in advance of our session. I’ll advise you of these after we have an appointment scheduled. Should we begin a tune-up session, if it appears that it will take more than one hour to address your concerns, I will give you the option of ending the session after one hour or continuing the session. If you choose to continue the session, my rate is $110 per hour.” And to make it clearer still, when on the phone with members I’ll remind them as the end of the hour approaches that I am sensitive to people having budgets and if cost is a concern they can have me stop at the end of the hour or continue to finish the job for which they’ll be charged my hourly fee for the actual time I spend beyond the first hour. While I am disappointed to learn of the member’s experience with a hacker, I am glad that the tune-up was successful and made the member’s system run faster.

It was painful to be on the phone while someone tried to fix your computer; we were on the phone for hours. Had the computer actually worked afterward, I wouldn't have minded.... Please see above for the full story.
Description of Work: My Dell laptop had been running very very slowly for quite some time. I saw the deal on Angie's List and I thought it made sense to try it. I figured the repair person could remote in so that my data would be secure so it would be a convenient way for me to get my laptop fixed in the comfort of my own home. First - and this is something I've complained about in the past...you don't get the whole story until you purchase the deal. It was only after the I 'purchased' the deal and after I spoke with the service person did I learn that he was in Phoenix, AZ. In the whole scheme of things, I wasn't too bothered although I would have prefered he been located in the tri-state area. Anyway, I don't know enough IT-related detail to explain what he did but suffice it to say that he didn't successfully repair my computer because I just spent $201 to get the laptop fixed and this time, it actually works. The service person loaded some applications onto my computer to help him identify the issues and identify what was causing the laptop to be so slow. The thing that made me the most uncomfortable was that he suggested I keep one of the programs on my laptop "in case he had to service the laptop again." Admittedly, the laptop was super slow which was why I purchased the special in the first place. His argument was that it took such a long time to load that if I left it on, I wouldn't have to 'pay' for his time while he re-loaded it some time in the future. I can't remember exactly what the software did but it allowed him to see what I was doing on my computer. Enough said... Anyway, I haven't used my personal laptop for eons becuase it still didn't work correctly after he "fixed it" and I was a bit put off that he could probably "see" what I was doing if i did log on. The repairman that just fixed my computer said that the Norton Anti-Virus I had on my computer was taking up more ram than the total amount of data I had on my computer. Additionally, there were 2 other programs that were on my computer that I didn't put on my computer. The repairman loaded Windows 7 on my laptop, cleaned it up and demonstrated how much more quickly it ran after he fixed it.

The member is correct in one respect: the Big Deal does not specifically state that I am in Arizona, although it does state that service work is to be done remotely. However on March 16, 2012 I sent a Welcome Letter, as I send to every Big Deal purchaser, that in part states: “I am in Arizona. You probably are not. The consulting is to be done by the use of remote control software, Team Viewer, which allows me to control your computer as if I were sitting at the keyboard myself. Through the use of this software I can examine your system, clean it up, tune it up, transfer files, even chat with you through a chat window – all done while you watch if you like. At the end of our session I will remove the software unless you tell me that you’d like to keep it on in the event you need assistance in the future. This software is free for non-commercial use and costs you nothing. I will not be coming to your house.” At this point the member could have called me and if uncomfortable with working long distance, requested a refund which she would have immediately received. She also could have sent me a message through Angie’s List or contacted Angie’s List directly before purchasing the Deal to find out more information. When I suggested that the member leave Teamviewer on her system it was not because I anticipated future problems with her system, it was that in case she needed assistance in the future she’d save time and money by not having to wait to download the software again. Many members who’ve purchased Big Deals have become clients and I continue to connect to their systems to perform additional work beyond system tune-ups using TeamViewer. I did protect her system by not having the software load automatically, and in this manner I could not look at her system again until she gave me permission by starting the program. I cleaned up almost a gigabyte of junk, 804 MB to be exact, and removed 3.600 junk files and repaired 143 registry entries. The key to speeding up her system was to increase the Random Access Memory from the 512 MB she had in the system to whatever her budget and the limitations of her Dell Inspiron 1501 would allow. Today’s price is $33 for 2 gigs of RAM that would do far more for speeding up her system than anything else, including removing Norton AV, a decision with which I agree, or purchasing Windows 7 for $140+. The member failed to mention that because her laptop was so slow I waived more than $50 of service time that was spent waiting for software to download. I feel bad that this experience did not meet the member’s expectations. More than 95% of the members I’ve worked with were more than satisfied with my work – enough to give me 120 “A” ratings and more than 36 nominations for a Page of Happiness.

I’m very sorry that the member was disappointed in the service provided. Had she followed up, I would have been glad to resolve all of her issues to her complete satisfaction or refund her money, even though her Deal had expired. The member purchased her Deal on March 4, and the Deal expired on August 31. I removed 664 MB of junk and more than 1,500 temporary files to speed up her system. I reduced the number of start up processes from 82 to 48, the result of which was that her machine would boot much faster and shut down much faster. I fixed 265 registry entries. In addition to the above, I downloaded several programs that would keep her system clean and let her remove malware. I sped up her system by turning off many unneeded services and startup programs. The fact that I was changing screens quickly was due to the member’s desire to not spend more money than for only one hour of tune-up time when an average system takes about 1.5 – 2 hours to thoroughly clean. Having sold more than 300 Big Deals for computer cleanups in 2012 alone and having been in the business for more than 30 years, I beg to differ about the statement I did not know what I was doing. More than 120 “A” reviews by Angie’s List members also support my viewpoint.

My computer did speed up noticeably after Joe was done removing extra files and programs. However, he was unable to solve my single biggest issue; my computer freezing every time a certain site was loaded.
Description of Work: My laptop was running very slowly and crashing frequently. I made a phone appointment with Joe for him to look at my computer remotely. After sending me a few programs a day before our appointment, and asking me to run them in order to clean up my computer in advance, Joe logged onto my computer remotely - while on the phone with me - and looked at my system. He removed several unnecessary programs and took some steps to speed up my computer. It took about an hour to complete the work. He also gave me a few programs to run periodically to maintain the speed and keep "junk" off my machine.

After purchasing the service it was determined that the system clean simply would not work for the computer I had purchased the work for -- owner of Smart Ideas (service company) offered a full refund for my purchase but as I needed some feedback and direction for another computer I suggested they provide the same time developed to this new problem -- which they agreed and I was more than satisfied with the services I received -- thank you.
