They were unsuccessful in fixing it. There was an electronic circuit board they took out and found they could not replace it. The fireplace company had gone out of business and we can't replace the circuit board now. We feel they should have known this before they took it apart. We want them to return the board and return our money. We will try to find someone else to replace the fireplace. Customer reply to Service Provider Response 1/27/18: You claimed “As provided in the detailed letter I wrote you, we will not have part in "buying" good reviews!” While in your response you say that is insulting, the phone call was recorded and your exact words were; "The refund is the most important part" and that "I (you) would like to be able to leave a more favorable review - indicating you would leave us a better review if we gave you money back. I heard it with my own two ears, and have the file saved. Those were your statements verbatim to Candace”. You are mischaracterizing my comment. Had you agreed to make good on your obligation to restore my fireplace to safe and normal operation, or refunded the money I paid for a non result, I would have recognized that in my rating of your performance. Not only did you fail to restore my fireplace to safe operation, your company personnel left my premises unannounced with the burners running and no way to shut them off using the wall switch provisions that were designed to control the fireplace starting and stopping. The result of this act of negligence was a safety hazard which your business co owner described as an “emergency”. You accuse me of omitting details in my Angie’s List review. Here are the details: 1. I contacted your firm to repair a fireplace that would not turn on; I called your company to fix it. 2. On 1/10/18 your first employee was unable to restore the fireplace to normal operation after a thermocouple replacement. He tried for several hours relocating the gas logs and embers unsuccessfully. The flames had spontaneously stopped on various occasions. 3. He left my premises while gas was being supplied to the burners and with the burners running. The wall switch that was there to turn off the burners had no control. Your subsequent claim in your email to me that I had turned the burners on was false. Had they spontaneously stopped burning, which I had observed several times while he was working, gas would have filled the entire room and possibly the house with gas. Your co owner correctly saw the need to get someone to the house ASAP, who shut off the gas supply. She said I had “an emergency”. 4. On 1/12/18 your second employee, a senior technician, concluded that the circuit board was defective and that he could “omit” it by removing it and making wiring changes. I expressed reluctance to operating without the circuit board without knowing what safety features the board afforded. Your senior technician then said he would seek to find a replacement circuit board made by the manufacturer, or an after market board, or a repair of the defective board. That seemed agreeable so he took the removed board and left. Expecting that the defective board would soon be replaced I paid him the $299.25 before he left. He needed several days to follow up about the board. 5. Several days later the second technician told me by phone that the “defective” circuit board could not be replaced or repaired. He also said that the company that built the fireplace had been out of business for fourteen years, and furthermore that company had a safety recall. The technician said that the fireplace needed to be replaced. The Magic Touch owner, alternately used several excuses why the repair could not be made. One was that the circuit board was not available. Another was that that there was a recall on this fireplace. 6. We engaged another fireplace service company on 1/24/18 for a service call. Their technician first reinstalled the so called defective circuit board, then went quickly to the thermopile and replaced it. The fireplace behaved normally, starting and stopping as controlled by the wall switch.. The circuit board, was not defective as declared by Magic Touch. Re the recall on the Marco fireplace, the problem, as described by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, was separation of the interior vent pipe from its connection to the exterior wall of the house. This condition could have resulted in a fire caused by the hot exhaust gases inside the wall. The second company’s technician used a camera to confirm that no such separation existed on my system. Whether this problem never existed in our system, or whether a previous repair had been made due to the recall before we owned the house, remains unknown. But the technician from the second company we engaged assured us that this condition is not now present; there is no separation.* 7. Our fireplace is now safe, not threatened by the Marco vent pipe separation, and not due to a defective circuit board, as the Magic Touch owner incorrectly asserted in order to justify that the repair job was not completed by his company. Therefore our rating to Angie’s List stands. *Update Innovative Hearth Products, the company that eventually took responsibility for the Marco fireplace recall advises that based on the model and serial number of my fireplace, it was not a candidate for the Marco Retrofit Project. So all claims suggesting the fireplace needing a recall on repairas a cause of the non repair are untrue.

By omitting so many details in this review here on Angie's List - and by far not telling the whole story, combined with your reply to my letter, it is very clear to us you are manipulating the situation with your review. I'll state publicly the same way I replied in my letter - that is unethical and I'll have no part of it! We have the reputation we do, an A grade with Angie's List - out of 600 reviews dating back 11-years, 11 Super Service Awards, etc because we do the right thing! As I explained in my letter - we are not above making mistakes, and when we do - we make things right at all costs - but that is certainly not the case here. You were only charged for services rendered, and in fact, my team went above and beyond to try to help you. Their reward was a manipulative review with the intention of thinking we would buy an improved grade. We hold ourselves to a higher ethical standard than that and would rather the bad review remain public. We have that A grade for a reason and will have plenty of honest members give us more of them to match the service we deliver to them. In fact the very next member to leave a review (of the same technician - on the same type of product) gave him straight A's across the board. Lastly, I will state publicly that it was us who informed you your fireplace was recalled 15 years ago, and that the manufacturer has been out of business for well over a decade. To state that the technician should have known that is preposterous. It was only after hours of research online searching for the part (you insisted we remove and replace which the technician informed you could be repaired), that we discovered a recall from 15 years ago. We informed you immediately for your own safety. We also informed you that the recall had absolutely nothing to do with the components of the fireplace - which is what you called us to repair. You stated your fireplace would not turn on. We repaired that and the fireplace turned on. It was only then we discovered there was a second problem...which could NOT have been known until we at least got the fireplace to light. You stated in your reply you expected a fully functional fireplace or you should [Member Information Removed]'t have to pay. We informed you we COULD rewire your components and make everything safe and fully functional - however your fireplace was recalled due to a flue venting issue in the wall behind the fireplace - therefore it would be unsafe and irresponsible to do so, and you should replace the entire fireplace to be safe. Got 4 quotes from 4 well rated Angie's list companies and went with what I determined was the best one. Not Magic Touch.
Description of Work: I've had 2 diagnostics done and a leak test performed on my 6 year old heat pump and both HVAC companies agreed that a particular component needed to be replaced. I was calling around to get the best price for the repair. Magic Touch would not give me a quote for repair unlike the other companies that I called. They insisted that I pay for an additional expensive diagnostic test up front so they could tell me what I already knew. I only called 4 companies total not wishing to turn this simple, but expensive, repair into a huge project. I based my decisions on Angie's list reviews and ratings. Very disappointed in this otherwise well rated company.

Ouch! We are sorry you don't agree with our policy to make sure our clients aren't paying for, in your own words, "an expensive repair", based solely on what another company's technician told you was wrong...especially in a refrigerant leak situation. We know the expereince, capabilities, certifications, and training our technicians have - unfortunately we don't know who diagnosed your issue or what his/her capabilities are. Just as a doctor won't provide you with medication without examining you, we choose to offer a higher level of service and due diligence for our clients - it is why we are, again in your words, "a well rated company" (indeed one of the highest on Angie's List because of our high standards). In the medical field there is a saying for this practice: Prescription Without Diagnosis is Malpractice. While I certainly hope things continue to work out, and the diagnosis was correct and complete, where you won't have problems in the future, we simply won't gamble with your money and our reputation on "hope". I encourage you to consider if giving us a "D" grade (and F in responsiveness?) based on a justifiable policy you simply don't agree with is really even fair of you, or the right thing to do. The service was excellent. Ruben called 30 minutes before arrival, performed the service with respect to the cleanliness of my house (shoe booties, drop cloth on hearth) and then sowed me how to operate my gas fireplace. He was polite and efficient, definitely a model employee.

All of the staff were professional, well informed and concerned for our well being. The installers were punctual, worked very hard, and even vacuumed our garage when they finished. They also fully explained the new system. In addition they sent a representative a week later to meet with us to determine if the system was working properly.
Description of Work: We needed a full replacement of our HVAC system.

Great except for problem caused by air intake installation on ceiling. Damage to ceiling was later repaired but matching paint not available, so I will have to paint the entire hallway ceiling myself.

Description of Work: Deep cleaning required in my 3 bedroom home. We have 3 dogs and 2 cats. 1350 sq feet. Received a 2 person deep cleaning for 2 hours, time went over but I was called to clear any further costs prior.

First visit, technician Teman came. After one hour of checking, he without asking for my permission or infirming me the price replaced the compressor which he stated had gone bad. He claimed that everything checked out okay including the refrigerant and cleaning out my unit. I paid 228 dollars for the part. Diagnostic was credited which was appreciated. A few days later, the AC kept running and was not cooling the house where I would have liked it to be. They send out the same techinician. After explaining the situation , he went outside and upstairs to check. After one hour of checking, he had to call his supervisorin because he didnt know what to do. The supervisor arrived and I find that the techinician is a newly trainee. Claimed the unit was dirty and the refrigerant needed to be replaced. They also claimed there was a possible leak somewhere. I showed the supervisor the work that was done a few days ago. He was puzzled why Teman wrote refrigerant was okay and everything else was running fine. There was no mention of low refrigerant, unit was supposedly clean. Did not tell me my coils were dirty and said my house was where it was supposed to be. I was upset becauese they wanted 900 dollars for this repair. Why was this mentioned now and not a few days ago. I was nice and had said this was not professional and was wasting my time. Supervisor said back to me that it was 7pm and he didn't want to be here and he wanted to be home with his family having dinner with them. I was shocked because that was unprofessional and the fact that the same techinician said two different things at two different visit was alarming. I felt uncomfortable with shelling out that much money. I had used this company in the past but will not use this company again because of this experience. Unfortunately, I am now having to find a reliable and trustworthy company.

As the homeowner in the midst of purchasing an expensive product, I have a right to educate myself, I deserve the common decency of an answer to a simple question and should be allowed the time to assemble a list of applicable questions PRIOR to having a someone enter my home, if I so choose. Instead, there was a flat out refusal to have anything to do with me unless I scheduled a free, one hour appointment. While I remained on hold, I became increasingly frustrated and agitated so I finally hung up. I was done. Then the office manager called me back! She talked over the top of me. When I tried to get a word in edgewise, she said she'd already heard everything I had to say and that her answer was final. Why did she call me back?! To seal the deal and make sure I was nothing less than fuming mad?! What the heck, man, I'm just trying to buy the HVAC system that's right for me... and it most certainly won't be from "Magic Touch"
Description of Work: I am in the process of purchasing an HVAC system. I had decided on the efficiency that a Trane condenser 16 SEER, single stage model 4TWR6048-1 and corresponding variable speed air handler, model TAM7A0C48H41 provides. Magic Touch has a nice blog that covers a wide range of FAQs about air conditioning systems and features, to which I was referring for a product comparison between Trane and Lennox (like for like). Since Magic Touch sells both, and the company I had been working with only sells Trane; and because the author of the blog seems knowledgeable and unbiased regarding either product; and the company is rated well overall on this site, I called yesterday to ask which model unit number (one or more) in the Lennox line is comparable to the Trane described above. I aim to educate myself and complete my own product comparison before going any further. And, of course, if the Lennox system turns out to be of the caliber it appears to be on the outset, my intentions would be to purchase if from Magic Touch; the Trane condenser unit being aesthetically too tall for the existing space. When I called, I was told all the technical representatives were out in the field and that they are all very busy. I was told, "someone will give you a call if they have time." followed by a thank you\you're welcome [click.]--effectively hanging up on me. So I should sit tight with no air conditioning and I might get a call back if they have the time. Surely they'd have time for a potential customer, right? But I received neither a return call at the end of that day nor at the beginning of the next. I called back and asked to speak with Richard Morgan (the author of the blog and owner of the company); still with my simple question. I was told that I could not speak to him because he is not in the office today or any day, because he works from home. Additionally, I was told that answering questions over the phone was not a service they provide and that they would not be willing to answer a question without sending someone into my home for a complete review.

As HVAC systems are not "plug-n-play", it is critical that we have one of our experts review the application, perform a load calculation, etc. etc. before we can make any equipment recommendations. (All of this is talked about in the blog posts we write which you found so helpful). We provide this service for free, however all of our experts work in the field every day for this exact reason, and we do not have someone in the office that can answer your questions site unseen - our office staff works in an administrative capacity and schedule these experts to visit around your schedule. I believe most would agree that your review and "F' grade is rather unfair as we offer a free evaluation and staff whose specific job it is to give you the information you requested (with no obligation) however you asked to specifically speak directly with the owner of the company (who was out of town) and circumvent how we regularly do business with all of our clients. As you continue to shop just remember the adage; Prescription without diagnosis is malpractice.
