Description of Work: They did the annual air conditioning check-up, which is part of my service plan. I also had them check that the new thermostat I installed myself was done properly. I asked them to put a surge protector on the a/c outlet since there are a lot of power failures around here. That was the only thing I was charged for on this visit. I had called them to come out two weeks earlier to check the new thermostat and they were honest enough to tell me that it could be included at no charge in the free annual check-up if I could wait the two weeks for the annual check-up date.

As I said ... it was routine ssrvice. Oh, it would be nice if the technician was specific about what was done during the servicing.
Description of Work: This call was just a routine service of the A/C system. This company has provided service for several years. There isn't much to say about routine service. The service technician was polite and professional. He didn't really push additional services. I do have a home owner warranty so this firm might not be the one selected if there was a problem.

Hi Member! I just pulled the paperwork from the files and see that Jeff, who was your technician that day, filled out a system efficiency report and also an additional notes form. He was supposed to leave you with copies, I am sorry if he didn't. I am having copies of these mailed to you right away. Additionally, if you would like to discuss any of the recommendations and/or findings with Jeff, I can arrange to have him call you at your convenience. Just let me know. Thank you for your business and the grade of B, which is still above average - Hope next time we can earn an A rating. We had a contract for certain guarantees, and it got to the point where they refused to honor certain things in the contract. We ended up having to go to the BBB. I even contacted their corporate office, and they some-what worked with me, but the owners felt it wasn’t their responsibility even though it was written in their contract. Their employees were good, but the overall experience with this company was not.

Response from Pitzer's One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating
To the Angie’s List Members: Our company did install a new Air Conditioning and Heating system in the member’s home more than 5 1/2 years prior to this report being posted. Our company has bent over backwards and spent $1,000’s of dollars to make him happy and we are at a complete loss as to how to reply. The root of the problem is that we gave him a temperature guarantee on the installation that we would cool the home to 40 degrees below the outdoor temperature. For 4 years (this is all documented) the system maintained the temperature. In the 4th year we received a complaint that the system was not maintaining the temperature. We modified the existing duct system and even added new ductwork FOR NO CHARGE in order to make the system cool better. (had we not done this work under warranty the homeowner would have paid close to $3,000 for the modifications/additions we made) After being told that the system was performing better, but still not making the home cool enough, we sent out and did a whole house survey that determined that not only was the insulation in the walls breaking down but that the ductwork that was originally installed when the mobile home was built was leaking massive amounts of cold air under the mobile home. Because we did not install the original ductwork we would not do any further work for free. This is what caused the homeowner to be upset. He then filed complaints with everyone who would listen. Nobody would rule against us. After going back and forth with the BBB for months, WE finally asked for Arbitration, so as to put this matter to rest. Because we did not have enough fine-print in our guarantee the arbitrator ruled that our guarantee was too vague and we were ordered to replace the ductwork in the home. Although we disagreed with the findings of the arbitrator, we did as the arbitrator ruled. Now, 6 months after we did thousands of dollars of free work this customer has posted this negative review. We do not know what else to say other than share our side of the story and hope that the public can see that our company is a honorable and honest company. As always, as the General Manager, I will be glad to field any questions or do my best to help a customer achieve satisfaction from our company. Respectfully Submitted, Larry Thornton General Manager

THE WORK PERFORMED WAS FINE. I FEEL THAT $725.88 TO INSTALL A $ 75.00 MOTOR WAS FAR TOO MUCH TO CHARGE FOR THE LESS THAN ONE HOUR IT TOOK TO PERFORM THE WORK.THE WEATHER HAD BEEN VERY HOT AT THAT TIME, WE DIDN'T KNOW OF ANY OTHER COMPANY AT THAT TIME SO WE AGREED TO PAY THE PRICE. WE ARE SENIOR FOLKS AND NEEDED SOME COOL AIR TEMPS HAD BEEN RUNNING OVER A 100 DEGREES DAILY.

Purchased unit in 07, since then the unit has not performed for 1 summer without breaking down numerous times. Techs were courteous but never seemed to find the cause, many items removed replaced and blamed but never did fix unit. We were told that the Manufacter voided our warranty and that we were lucky they replaced the outside condenser when it went out, when they could not figure out anything else they decided our duct work was bad. We called a company who came out to check it at the same time a Pitzer tech was also there checking the unit the new company stated that we did not have enough leakage in the duct work to cause the problem the Pitzer tech insisted that was the problem. The Glacier tech went under the home and checked all he could see is possibly the duct coming from the unit itself did not allow enough air so the next day he came and added a jumper duct and sealed all vents. When he turned the unit on still very little air through the vents we had him check the unit he found that the squirrel cage that Pitzer put in did not line up when it was mounted. When he placed it over the area it would push air there was no way to mount it stuck out of the unit, luckily we had the old squirrel cage he re-installed it and the air flowed like crazy, probably did not to have the jumper put in. A few days later the unit quit blowing cold air again, the pipes were hot when we called Larry he stated they could not come until the next day and there would be a charge if it was not the compressor... we decided if we had to pay we would have the other company out since Pitzer was unable to fix it in 3years, Glacier found the hard start was wired in backwards and removed it, we called Larry he stated that he could not believe this but he would probably re-imburse us at least for that service call, he never did nor did he ever mention again. The unit again did the no cold air again told $89 for service call and whatever parts we made the appointment since we felt that it was their responsibility and that they needed to honor their contract we had with them, Larry stated if the unit was working they could not troubleshoot it so we would have to pay the $89 for the call. That night when we returned from work the unit was working again so we sent a text to Larry on his work cell to cancel the appointment but requested to make an appointmment with maybe him with his expertise and to bring the file so we could possibly troubleshoot and get the unit running. He called the next day saying he was furious with us for texting him that late at night and that he would probably put us on the do not service list...He stated that his tools were rusty and he was not an a/c guy anyway. When the unit acted up the next time we called Glacier air his test showed that the airflow through the pipes and filter wad not adequate, we called York to find that the warranty with them was still in affect and they sent Glacier the parts to repair. He moved the unit a little more from the home and replaced the filter at this time the unit seems to be working. I went to their U-Win site and stated my concern after 2 submissions Larry called he asked just what is it you want, again i explained a unit that works for at least 1 summer for them to stand behind it... He again stated the manufacturer voided our warranty and again i asked for this in writing, he became aggitated stated he was inputting into the computer that we were on the do not service list good luck with a new company and hung up. I have found this company to be miss leading and not trustworthy 1hr means an extra fee and it is still when it is convenient for them. On our contract under warranty it states 24hr emergency service we called 1 night when the house was 110 degrees and all the chocolate was liquid they would not come out nor when we called anytime were we able to get service right away so i am not sure what 24 hr emergency service is. 100% satisfaction? Our unit has not worked for 1 summer without numerous visits from them from the very first year it was purchased, they would not replace just kept insisting it was something else causing the problem, so what does 100% satisfaction mean. When i told Larry that the Glacier tech thought I should speak with him since he worked for him previous and that he felt Larry would not let this go he said that he did not remember him and he would have to figure it out, in another phone call he stated that the Glacier tech did work for him over 20yrs ago and he could not believe that he would haveanything nice to say since he fired him! I felt that was un proffesional and stated well that is to bad you feel that way since he only had good things to say about you. We had a tech that came to check our outside unit while we were at work, they were suppose to call my cell phone which I had on me and let me know when he arrived they did not, instead I get a call from our security system dispatch telling me the front door showes open and the sherrif was on their way. I called my nephew who lives across the street to see if the Pitzer vehicle wads there and it was not so I headed home. I called Pitzer asking them to see if a tech accidently set the alarm off the call center tried to verify by calling the local office and he also stated Larry. He told me he would call back and let me know before he was off at 9pm, the alarm was set off at 4:23. The gentleman from the Pitzer call center did call back but only to tell me that no one returned his call so he could not verify it. The next day I finally was able to reach Larry and he stated that yes the tech said he knocked on the door the alarm sounded ( the sherrif found the door open) he went to the backyard and checked the unit but found nothing. I find it hard to believe he checked the unit without the sherrif or my nephew seeing him and cannot believe that with the door being left open and the alarm sounding that no one would contact us! This is a short version of all we have been through but felt that we would like to warn others of the experience we had with them, it has cost us so far around another $1000 to repair or add things we did not need because of Pitzer. Thank you, Robert and Leslie Lough In response, yes it is my fathers home, I did live with him at the time of purchase! It was not mentioned in their response that the blower unit was incorrect and I did not need to have the ductwork done, it was not pushing air through the vents since it did not line up with them, nor that the hard start was wired in incorrectly. When Glacier called the manufacturer they honored the warranty and sent the parts so I am still at a loss for the void. There were many more service calls made to the home for the unit freezing up through the time of install and the last visit as i even sent him a picture of it since they could not show up while the pipes were frozen, as they told us when it thaws out and it starts working they cannot diagnose the problem. If anyone goes to Lynda Circle and asks the neighbors they could confirm the frequency of visits Pitzer made to the home in question. I am not one of those people you cannot please, just someone who cares about her parents, my mom spent the last couple of her years alive hot and waiting for the aircondition repair man to show up and as I told Paul and Larry I did not want this to happen to my dad also! So again, may I restate that all we wanted was a unit that worked at least 1 summer, when I spoke to York the manuffacturer they stated that Pitzer did not ever call their troubleshoot hotline to ask for asssitance and as the tech's stated to us they did maintanence on the unit when they were there! They were always polite but they also admitted that they could not figure out what was causing the problem and each time they left stated that they really hoped that it was fixed at that time even the last visit by Pitzer tech he was not sure what was wrong and was hoping that the vent work would do it but as stated above it did not we found 2 problems that were Pitzer's fault. I still feel that if the time would have been taken with the owner to come and troubleshoot that most if not all of this could have been avoided. Thank you again.

Response from Pitzer's One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating
To whom it may concern, Unfortunately it will never be possible to please all the people all the time. Leslie Lough is one of those people. Please let me clarify a number of details and mention a few that were left out of the above complaint. The home in question on Lynda Circle is a double wide mobile home and is owned and occupied by her Father, the member, herself lives a couple of miles away on La Entrada. Member has never paid us ANY money. Below is a timeline of our service history at the residence in question: LATE SUMMER 2005 On August 26, 2005, the Air Conditioner failed on her parent’s house (this is the home mentioned in the complaint) The homeowners were given different options; 1. Repair the unit 2. Replace the complete system 3. Replace the outdoor condenser only. The customers elected to replace the condenser only (not the best choice) for $2,380 plus tax for a total of $2,513.28 We were called out again about 3 weeks later as the unit was not cooling. We found that the system was low on Freon and multiple leaks in the indoor evaporator coil were discovered. We recommended that they replace the indoor evaporator coil and they agreed to do it and we had it scheduled for the next month. We charged the system that day with Freon (at no charge) to get them cooling and scheduled the coil to be replaced the next month. Unfortunately, they called on 10/10 and cancelled the install. (by now the weather had cooled down and the urgency was no longer there) Cost to our company $200 SPRING / SUMMER 2007 We did not go back to this clients home again until April of 2007 (which is a year and a half after the unit was installed) and again found that the unit was out of Freon. We charged them $197.27 to charge the system back up the proper level. We were called back out 2 weeks later as the unit was not working correctly. We found that the compressor was lugging on startup. It is our opinion that the compressor had been damaged from running without the proper amount of Freon in it. We again recommended that the coil be replaced to prevent any further leaks (like we did 2 years earlier) This time they agreed and a date was made to change the coil. 2 weeks later we replaced the coil and installed a Hard Start Kit to help the lugging compressor. Total cost of the job was $1,356.96. A week later we received a call that the unit had stopped working. We responded and found that the compressor had gone to ground. We do not know what caused this, it could have been a lightning strike, a power surge or just worn out from operating with an improper amount of Freon. Rather than replace the compressor only, we elected to replace the entire condensing unit at NO CHARGE. We did return that summer two additional times to make minor adjustments to the Freon charge AT NO ADDITIONAL COST to the homeowners. SPRING 2008 The following spring, in March, we received a call saying the system was not cooling. We arrived and found a leak in the lineset, which are the copper pipes between the outdoor condenser and the indoor evaporator coil. The lineset was not installed by us but we fixed the leak FREE OF CHARGE. Loss to Pitzer’s One Hour $300+ Two weeks later we again received a call the system was not cooling. When we arrived we found that the system was operating within parameters, was cooling the house and could find nothing wrong. We did charge the client a diagnostic fee of $49. Other than the purchase of the unit, the coil and the hard-start kit, this is the ONLY monies ever paid by the homeowner. Two more weeks passed and we again got a call that the unit was not cooling. We did find that the condenser fan motor had quit working. We replaced the motor under warranty at NO CHARGE to the client. In July of that year (2008) we did get again a call for no cooling and found that the filter/dryer in the refrigeration lines were plugged, we removed the filter, evacuated the system, pulled it into a deep vacuum and recharged it. This was done at NO CHARGE. NOVEMBER 2009 Called in (note the time frame) wanted to meet with a manager. Our Western Arizona Operations Manager, Paul List went to the clients home to look at the system and see if he could find anything wrong. Upon inspection, he recommended that we increase the blower size to increase the airflow. The cost of this repair should be in the $400 to $600 range, yet we did it AT NO CHARGE. Cost to our company $400+. AUGUST 2010 The compressor failed on the unit. When submitting a claim to the manufacturer for the compressor we were asked to provide proof of maintenance. We were unable to do so, as the system had never been maintained. We explained to the customer that the warranty was now void as they had neglected to maintain their unit. (18 months previously we mailed all our customers a letter letting them know that due to a number of reasons, that manufacturers and warranty companies were getting stringent on the need for maintenance and that they were likely to deny any claims where maintenance had not been performed) Leslie sent a complaint to the BBB to complain about this. We absorbed the cost of the repair, and DID NOT CHARGE the customer anything. We personally suffered a financial loss of over $1,000 on this repair. We further recommended to her that some ductwork under the mobile home be repaired. She elected to call her homeowners insurance to see if she could get it covered under that and this point the other company came in and did the work we recommended. We have bent over backwards to help these people, we have made expensive repairs, at our expense, of over $1,900 for this customer’s Father. Other than a single diagnostic charge of $49 these customers have never paid any monies for any repairs. We have responded rapidly when called and always been polite. If from the very beginning member’s parents had opted to replace the entire system with one that was matched for their home and had annual maintenance performed to keep the system running at peak efficiency, most, if not all of the above calls would have been avoided. Towards the end of our relationship the member, WHO IS NOT THE HOMEOWNER began to call me on my home phone and my cell phone, which is OK, during regular hours and even into the early evening receiving multiple texts at midnight was the final straw. She has since been placed on the Do Not Service List. In Summary, this customer’s parents had a partial system installed in their home in May of 2005. We recommended work that they declined (the evaporator coil & ducting) which led to future problems. When the unit failed 2 years later, we replaced it FREE OF CHARGE. We repaired leaks on a lineset we did not install at no charge, we put in a blower at no charge and finally a compressor at no charge. The total monies, before tax, we collected from this customer was $3,714. At a pre-tax profitability rate of 10% we earned only $371.40 On the other hand we have made repairs of over $1,900 at no charge to this client. I am sure any logical person can understand why we can’t afford to keep servicing customers that are unreasonable and refuse to pay for services.
