I was very happy with them. They did a great job. They were very professional, reliable, prompt and cleaned up very well. I have nothing but good thigs to say about them. We live in an area that a lot of companies will not come out to, so it was great to find such a good one that does service our area. I would highly recommend them.

White Shovel Landscaping arrived on schedule and surveyed the area requiring mulch. Their (very) rough estimate indicated I would need nine yard of mulch to adequately cover the beds. Having done this same job myself several times, I knew the estimate was too high. Each extra yard was only $45, so I wasn't too concerned if a few additional yards might be required. They arrived on time for the scheduled service and did a great job of distributing the mulch. They were very meticulous and the finished job looked great. The amount provided in the prepaid deal was perfect for my landscaping. If this deal is offered in the future, I will definitely take advantage of it. For slightly more than the cost of the mulch purchased in bulk, I got it installed. It is a great value.

We thank you so much for your review, and I am glad the rough estimate fulfilled your expectations. Look for this deal next year around July it is a slow month in the company and a great time to take advantage of theses types of deals. I would love to hear from you about how we can do better with our professionalism. The team looks forward to working with you in the future. Thank you for your interest in our company.

They have been professional for the most part. We had designed the landscaping around several fruit trees, but it turned out that I had to do my own searching for the fruit trees, and that part wasn’t completely up front. The nursery I had to go to was half an hour away. I feel like the person who came out for the consultation could have been clearer about this. Everything went as scheduled, excluding weather delays.

Thank you so much for your review, we look forward to hearing from you about how we could do better. While we are poised for growth and would love to add areas like food bearing plants to our research and designs unfortunately popular demand does not allow us to profitably extend into these types of designs because of the maintenance required to keep up these types of plants. However I am glad that our expertise was helpful as to what types of fruit bearing plants would do well in our growing zone. One major reason for not supplying these types of plants is our ability to provide a 5 year warranty on fruit bearing trees would not be profitable for you or the company. Thank you for your interest in our company, I hope that we can meet your expectations in the future. It has been an honor serving you.

Our first contact was with Isaac the design planner, and he was terrific. We knew that we wanted to do "something" but we were not sure what that something was. Isaac helped us formulate a plan and a vision for the work. We were provided with computer generated pictures using our yard to show what the project would look like after the work was completed. This was so helpful! Then the work began. Mike the project supervisor met with us frequently, and was always good to stay in contact with us when schedules or plans needed to change. When it came time, Angel, the Plant Lady, came to help me with all the difficult choices to be made selecting plantings for my new beds. She took me far and wide in search of the best. When one of our selections didn't work out as planned Angel went way above and beyond to find the best replacement for us, making a 40 mile round trip drive just to find a matching tree. All the employees we had at our house were wonderful. They were diligent, careful, polite, honest and paid close attention to detail. The work area was always left tidy even though the work might not be finished at the end of the day. Everyone tried hard to please us and would often ask us for guidance on questions that arose during the work. From beginning to end all work was completed with excellence. This was a complex multi part project, and it all came together beautifully! White Shovel is a family owned and operated business and they work hard to provide excellent service. I feel like I have found a true gem in the landscaping world! We are so pleased that we are already considering another project.
Description of Work: We had a small patio off our covered porch. White Shovel expanded the patio and covered the entire surface with stamped concrete, built a brick retaining wall, installed an aluminum fence with two gates in the retaining wall, surrounded the patio with garden beds and planted trees, shrubs and flowers in the beds. This created a courtyard. They also installed a small service path around the end of our house from the courtyard to the driveway.

Very professional and customer service oriented. We are already looking forward to using them again for another area of our yard. Update: I had several bushes die over the winter and I contacted the warranty department on May 8. I was told that same day that my claim would be forwarded to the project manager and he would give me a call asap. Four days later (May 12) I had not heard back so I inquired about the status and was told (that same day) I would receive a call within the next two weeks. This concerned me because of the 7 or so bushes that had died, a few more were looking bad and even though I had been promised maintenance training when the landscaping was installed, I had never recieved any and I wanted advice to save the rose bushes. When I still had not heard from them by May 16, I responded on with "Ok but it should be noted that more things appear to be dying that maybe could be saved with sooner attention. " I received this reply from the owner on May 16: Kim, I apologize for your frustration, however the warranty covers plants that have died, it is your duty to care for the plants, help them to live, we are not responsible for trying to help your plants grow better. It concerns me that you have waited this long to turn in the invoice for repairing the irrigation. Am I to understand that the plants have gone an entire year with our the irrigation system? Also, your review on Angies list is devastating to our company, I see it as completely unprofessional. It is your choice however, there is still no way of speeding up the process or getting to you any sooner. Also the repairs of your edging cannot be done through our company, we will be only replacing the dead plants. Mike I dont see how my original review was devastating to the company, or unprofessional. I never even mentioned the trouble I had with the irrigation system that he installed for me, even though I had complained to the company that it leaked at the source so badly that I couldnt turn it on. On May 18 when I got home from work, I had new bushes to replace the dead ones. No call, nothing about the obviously distressed rose bushes with no leaves, no email, nothing. I was really apprehensive about spending over $4000 on landscaping because I am not familar with taking care of rose bushes (although I have another one that I planted and pretty much ignore and it is thriving), but I was assured during the "sales" process that someone would be contacting me to show me how and when to trim the bushes and to care for them. One year later and I now regret doing business with this company.

This company went out of their way to go above and beyond for me. They are extremely nice, personable and professional.
Description of Work: They built a retaining wall and creating a drainage system to prevent flooding below my home. The wall is probably at least 65 feet long. 4-5 feet high. Also, they removed a cedar tree. They installed a water line with spigot on wall. Laid mulch and plants, basic landscaping. On the second Trip they created a front porch, 6 x 8 ft porch. Made steps going down side with rock and stone. Third trip, they actually put in a drainage system on side of home that connects to one on front. Put in a pop up valve to release the water. They did some extra stuff that I wasn't charged for like more mulch.

Excellent. They arrived based on weather, worked the full time and completed everything within a very reasonable amount of time. They checked in with me to make sure i was satisfied with the progress and the final clean up was great. The last walk through allowed me to ask quesitons on watering, and expected growth and cutting patterens for the future. Communication was excellent! I can fully recommend While Shovel for outstanding work and a quality product.

I should have realized they weren't quite an A when the assessor identified my blooming daffodils as day lilies. He assured me they'd be able to transplant all five foundation plantings but it turned out that only three were able to be transplanted. Their supervisor did do an outstanding job with a bobcat / small dozer getting out a couple of tree stumps without harming brickwork. A 1 day job stretched into 3 days. I had to buy 2 new plants which increased the cost of the job over $300 (+16%). There was a communication issue about the trellis and what they thought was adequate, which meant multiple purchases from Lowe's / Home Depot. They did not water the transplanted items and did not mist or water the plants that they had sitting out for a day or two. One of my sprinkler heads was buried when they replanted a monkey grass over it. Expect to have to direct them closely.

Somehow I feel the need to write a book. So let me tell you a story about a lady that loves plants. Upon arriving on site for the first time, and after a formal greeting, we proceeded to talk about the shrubs and plants that were in her current landscape. My first reaction seeing ginormous Arborvitae planted almost on her foundation, was that I recommend a full removal of current plants and trees. In my experience trees, that large, planted that close to the foundation isn't good. Also she had brick edging that was just as close to the trees as the house was, and the edging was 10 inches tall, and mortared into place. Upon further talking with her about removing them, I realized that these trees meant a lot to her. So against my better judgement we agreed to attempt to transplant them to the back yard. Since the trees were so close to the house, no heavy equipment could be used to remove them. And after 2-3 hours of 4 hardworking guys removing the soil around the trees and carefully cutting roots, we realized the roots were just to big, and we couldn't go out far enough to cut them, because of the edging and the house. So a phone call was placed over to this nice lady. Not easy to admit that we either take out the edging, or house, or trees! I asked her to take a close look at the roots we were about to cut, and make a decision on whether or not she thought the transplants would take. She reluctantly agreed that they needed to be taken out, and disposed of. I told her that we would need to bring a Mini Excavator in to grab them from the top and pull up on them while we cut the roots, to ensure no damage was done to her home, or edging. Then we began talking about what she wanted to plant, instead of the trees we were now removing. I told her that I could have someone at the nursery identify the exact tree that she had, walk her around and help her pick out new trees. I also told her to get the biggest ones they had, and I would give her the wholesale ticket to pay only. This allowed her to pick out larger trees. The total for these trees at wholesale price was 316 dollars. After she picked them out, we went to the nursery picked them up and installed them. The crew pulled off the job the first day in order to allow time for her to pick out new trees. The next morning she picked them out at 9:30, the crew arrived at 9:00 to remove and the trees were picked up and planted. The next thing was her trellis, unfortunately the material that she purchased, for installing the trellis, wasn't adequate to hold the trellis in place. So after a few suggestions she insisted that she pick out the wood that would be used. So she picked it out and purchased it, and because of the length of the wood, we sent a truck by Home Depot to pick it up for her. Then we installed the trellis on the 3rd day in the morning. This wonderful lady had a very difficult time letting those trees go, we did everything we could to save them, and we still could have moved them, had she wanted us to. I tell people often plants are living things, they struggle to survive and and thrive in good area's that meet their needs. I know this was tough for her, and I wish her the best. At least now her new trees will be able to grow unrestricted in their new home. :) From the White Shovel Team, thank you for your business, and your review.

They were crappy. They're wonderful people, very punctual but they're not buying the landscaping plan. I wouldn't hire them. Their price is outrageously high. Nobody agrees with their plans, we had problems in the plans; they're in the wrong order and the way they needed to be arranged and how they would grow so they took pictures and would look pretty but it won't grow right.

This review is very confusing! I want to just go ahead and address important issues. I think the first one on here is that our price being stated "outrageously high". Just like with any other service you are perfectly free to get other estimates if you like. White Shovel has never claimed to be the cheapest landscape company in town, we strive to offer the highest quality installation, and design services in North Alabama. However if you were to get several estimates on your project and design services we are confident that you would find our prices fairly priced, and very reasonable. As always, we wish to thank everyone for participating in the review process that Angie's list so wonderfully offers. This process helps us to improve our service and to be better for each new client that we service. :)

He had some good ideas and explained things to me but he didn't leave any design plans with me. They wanted to come out and give basic ideas and want you to hire them for a landscape project. I was looking to receive a design where I could take months or years to complete the project. Their service is not set up to do a project in stages but rather a lot of money at one time. I am not ready to do the entire project at this time due to finances. I didn't feel as the purchaser the deal benefited me because I had different expectations.

I'm am humbled and truly puzzled at this review. This was a design for a back yard retaining wall, which we were unable to complete a design for her, because she was only in town for a few days. We tried our up-most best to have her allow us to complete a design for her. However she would not allow us to go past the first visit, because she was going back out of town. No designs were completed for her... and quite simply retaining walls are expensive, and rarely can you split one into several projects. And we were unable to leave designs with her, because (quite frankly) none were completed for her. And we don't price projects unless plans are created, good planning is the key to getting what you want, and getting it installed correctly. We provide an incredible product, with design and installation. We also go extremely overboard when it comes to splitting a project up into stages. We also provide customer support to you, even if you decide to use the plan, to install it yourself. I think that this review had to of been left on our page by accident. :( Be sure to ask your White Shovel "Creative Designer" about our new gallon size plant pricing program, that can allow you to get more what you want for less. :)

Once we set a date they arrived on time and with many men and began the work work. They chacked with my wife and I often to ask question and be sure they were doing what we wanated. They worked all day and stopped for darkness. The leader said he would be back in the morning to finish the last bed and tidy up. They arrived again on time and when finsihed we walked around to go over everything one more time. I said they had exceeded our expentations by far. The nect morning the owener called me and wanted to set up a time so he could walk through with me. I told him that was not necessary, I could not be more satisfeid. If you want an all American team with each person being higly trained in their field, at a cost you like, and service to outdo anyone in the filed...these are your guys and gals. Steve

I know that hiring people to do a project around your house can be fearful, White Shovel is very clear that we do Landscaping, stone and Mason work is performed by a certified mason, we strive for high quality installation, and we accomplished it in a extreme way on this project. Projects in the winter for stone work can be difficult working around the weather, sometimes going back over something is required to provide high quality. I am glad that you are happy with the installation quality, and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused. :)

I didn’t go ahead with them because they were way too expensive. The package was like $14,000-15,000 and this is only for the front of my house. I think they saw that I was a woman and a widow and they took advantage of that. They wanted to take out just about everything I already had that didn’t need to be taken out. I told them there were some thing I didn’t want to be taken up and they wanted to take it all out except for a group of shrubs. The young man that came out here did not follow instructions. I work about 10 minutes from my home and I asked him to please call me at work so I could come home. He happened to come here when there were some other people doing some work outside my house. So he pulled in and rang the doorbell. The other workers told him that I wasn’t home and he said that when I don’t show up in just a few minutes, he will leave. He was a little kind of rude. When I got home, the guys told me that he came and left. He did call me the next time he came out.

She is right we priced only the front yard. The front yard was very large as far as the price goes it was 10,850, when you split that over, a massive removal of old shrubs, new planting a across the front of the house, and the front yard also had beds in it as well, each including a fountain, flagstone paths, plants, and trees, rock benches & new hard edging. Yes, we do charge for installation. As far as appointments go, if you set an appointment with us, we do expect you to be there, we put a lot of hours into every design, along with most designs including 3 visits to your site to collect data. We call, an hour before the appointment, and we are on time. If you are unable to answer the first call, upon arriving, and you not being there, we will call again. After 10 minutes we call one more time. And then "yes" we do leave. We take the time however to ask anybody on the site if they have seen or heard from you. We have more time invested in our designs then most people realize, and trust me we want you to be there, it is very disappointing to pore your heart into a design, only to be stood up. Let me give a quick breakdown of the time a Creative Designer with White Shovel will go through. I will use this design as an example, 3 visits to the site, 45 minute drive one way, onsite visits took 50- 75 minutes that's times 3. Preparing photo ideas, 4.8 hours. Preparing final plan layout, 1.4 hours. All totaling 12 hours, so we do appreciate :) you being at your appointments. Our landscapes are backed by a 5 year warranty on all new plant and hard scape material, we also guarantee NO WEEDS, for a year, as well as offer free onsite maintenance classes. Our goal is low-maintenance, and our mission is high quality, and the best customer service. We are humbled by each review good or bad, and we sincerely thank you for posting. Replace the foundation planting along the entire front of the house. We had good discussion on the selection of the type and size of the plants. They finished the planting with generous mulch and repair of the existing edging. Mike the owner was a pleasure to work with. Stayed in touch during the job. Was very open to tweaking the design as it was installed. He in fact redid the profile of some edging after it was completed at my suggestion. He honestly wanted to make sure we were happy.

It did not go well. Used an Angie's list deal that amounted to paying for a sell job. Whiteshovel made promises they did not deliver. I will not use them again.

Response from White Shovel Landscapes
We certainly appreciate reviews, we wish to be the best, and reviews always enable us to do that. In response, I would just like to add I feel like that our client was so skeptical that she didn't allow the designer to complete his design sessions. She actually stopped the designer on the second appointment, and wouldn't allow him to continue. For a designer with White Shovel their sole job is to design the very best landscape that fits the clients taste and interest. :) Funny actually, I think this young lady was so blown away by the photo design process, she got concerned that she was being sucked into purchasing installation. Flattering as it is, it's certainly isn't a secret, we do love installing landscapes, as all of our wonderful reviews on installation shows. At the end of the process we have a total price for installation. But see this young lady didn't make it to the last appointment so what she experienced is something wonderful, a designer seeking her interest, asking her questions, trying to build the perfect landscape, not just a good landscape, the perfect landscape for this client. We love what we do, and we wish every client could experience the satisfaction from receiving a landscape design and installation from White Shovel. Merry Christmas

The representative came to my house and provided ideas for landscaping my backyard. I told him I'd discuss it with my husband. He then returned a couple weeks later to further discuss it and provided a quote. I told him I'd get back with him and still have not. I'm at a standstill as to what I want to do and am currently taking a gardening class to get further educated before making any big changes. May decide to use him once I'm finished with my class. The rep was very professional and had good ideas. I've put the project on hold for now because of costs and because I want to learn as much as I can before this project and may do some of it myself.

Met with their salesman and discussed some options for landscaping our new home. 2nd meeting about 2 weeks later he came back with illustrations and artwork showing options for the areas we discussed in our first meeting. Price quote was fair and reasonable. Overall it was a very good experience and when my wife and I are ready to begin the project I will call them again.

The planning took place over three visits with a White Shovel representative, Isaac, consisting of ideas, photos and pricing. Everything was laid out in detail, including products to be used, pricing and installation schedule. Just before the installation date, we had a walk through to ensure we were all on the same page. The professionalism displayed by everyone we came in contact with from planning to installation was impeccable. Once installation began, our yard took on a total transformation. What was once a bunch of overgrown bushes, trees, etc. now looked very neat, uncluttered and well kept. Another feature that was added was our water fountain, which we love! It's such a great focal point in front of our entry way. We are extremely pleased with the job from start to finish. We have actually just completed the planning for phase 2 of our project, which includes a side yard and the back yard. I am looking forward to another wonderful transformation. By the way? just after we completed phase one of our project, our Homeowners Association awarded us with "yard of the month"! We were very excited about that, and it's all due to the wonderful job of the White Shovel crew! Thank you Mike for always being available for questions, concerns, etc. before, during and after the sale! That's great customer service! And I can't let it go unsaid that the installation guys are some of the hardest working men that I have ever seen!
Description of Work: We hired White Shovel to landscape our entire yard, completing the job in three phases. Phase one was the front yard, a side bed on one side of the house, and 2 side beds on the other side of the house. Phase one is complete and we are very satisfied.

The three design meetings went great. The first visit consisted of what we were looking for as well as future plans. The second an third meeting fine tuned and finalized what we wanted done within the price range we could afford. Before installation started, we went back over the plan to make sure we were all still on the same page. We made a few tweeks and they were off and running. They constanly asked through out the installation if what was being done met our expectations and desired outcomes, we appreciated the extra communication. When they were done we went back over the entire project and reviewed every detail to ensure we were happy with the results. The level of customer service was great from start to finish. Very rarely have we dealt with a company that took the extra time to make sure we were happy with what we paid for. We will definetly use them again for our future projects and would highly recommend them.

My dad told me two important things: Speak up and ask questions or you will never get what you want & You always get what you pay for. Before I do a project I either know what I want and can provide pictures and do my own guestimate to see if I feel comfortable spending the money or I do research on the various elements by internet sources and home stores. I did incredible tile work with 3 medalions in one house. I knew I would have to lay the tile because it was the only way I could afford the project. Most of the bad reviews I saw for this provider were for people inconvenienced by Angie's list selling the Big Deal to people out of their area or people who did not make their wishes known and expected to be wowed by accident. .I live on a mountain and this will make the project harder. I am flexible on time, am aware of many of the hardships they will face because I did the initial landscaping and know what won't grow where. I am also aware $99 won't pay for the kind of landscape planning I need. I was interested in what they would do to my property. If they talked to me about planting flowers here and there and left to make pretty pictures, I would be interested in their design ideas but they were not going to be the landscape company for me. He took one look around and told me I had a major project ahead of me and that if I had a small budget, there would not be a lot we could do for me. I am older now and want an easier way for people to enter my home rather than climb the Matterhorn that is my driveway. He had some great ideas and I could tell we were on the same page about what could be done. If he suggested get rid of something I wanted I told him my idea and he could see where I was going and why it would work. I also want to remove a chain link fence that was high quality but my dogs all passed away and I wanted my yard back to the way it was. I wanted something long lasting, low maintenance, and gave me a few spaces to put in some annuals. I did not want to trim shrubs, replace broken walls, and wanted as many bulbs and perennials as possible. I do not have an exact figure but I assume it won't be cheap. They have also performed work for other people with similar yards to their satisfaction. I am demanding because I know what I want, but I am also understanding and have a great contractor I found on Angie's List who has already done to major projects for me. I think this company is going to be a fit for me and we will start slow and If it goes well we have it divided into 3 projects..
Description of Work: We agreed this was a huge job and pretty pictures wasn't going to do it. We decided to do the project in 3 parts. Instead of the pretty pictures we need more of an elevation type cad drawing. He is going to go home and come back with designs we can then choose the elements we like. I like exotic plants and I like to garden though I am unable to do so anymore, so I will pick the plants when we get to that part of the design. The third visit we will sit down and work through the hows and whens.
