White Shovel was very easy to work with, very prompt in responding to my needs, and always arrived on time and completed work as promised. Issac did a fantastic job with the landscape design, was very thorough in his efforts to explain the design concept and selection of plants. I was very well pleased with the overall experience and would definitely use them again.

I had a great experience with White Shovel Landscapes. They provided a competent service from the design phase to the execution of the landscaping project. The team was punctual and professional, handling the installation with a level of care that was appreciated. They were also quite receptive to feedback throughout the process, ensuring that the final outcome was to my satisfaction. The use of local plants and materials was a thoughtful touch, contributing to a garden that feels like it belongs to the local landscape. Post-service follow-up was a testament to their customer service commitment. If you're looking for a reliable landscaping service that delivers a solid result without any fuss, White Shovel Landscapes is worth considering.

They called to start the job a few days early. They were to use my existing sod from the flower beds to cover a couple a spots in the backyard, but they forgot and scrapped all of my sod so they had to bring in fresh sod. I expected the sod to be laid out in straight lines but the edges are all jagged with several areas being trip hazards. They apparently didn't do something correct when preparing the cutout for the bed as grass is coming up rampant through the mulch. The original drawing had part of my bed in my neighbors yard, so they had to adjust on site. The layout was a little off from the drawing although not too terrible. Overall, it looks good from the street, but I am a little embarrassed at it up close especially to those who know how expensive it cost. They were very nice, respectful, and had to come out multiple times, but it's just not what I had hoped. I feel i should have done something very small to then evaluate the outcome before going all in. Also, they allowed the total to be paid off over 6mths.
Description of Work: They installed landscaping for 5 flower beds including a three trees. They also put down topsoil and sod covering about 10-15sqft.

July 2013 -- WS was great to work with and getting the landscape design completed. The installation went smoothly and quickly. All the work was completed within 3 days of the start. The plants were much smaller than I had expected for the price. They did damage my brickpaver landscape trim, but they did make the repairs in a timely manner. One of my Japanese maples appeared very stressed and was dying after a couple weeks. They came out and replaced the tree. Several of my plants were stressed and loosing leafs. Feb 2014 - Came out and showed me how to prune my shrubs and trees. Very nice. Noted the plants that were having issues. Fall 2014 - Called and let the guys know the stressed plants appeared to be dying. They came by and checked them and said I should fertilize them and let them know how they look in the spring. May 2015 - The plants (4 shrubs) did not survive the winter and I called and let them know. WS came out and replaced the shrubs with 4 different shrubs... I did not know they had come out for a couple of days when I noticed the new plants. Once of the plants did not survive a week and the other 3 were dead within a month. July 2015 -- I called WS and let them know the new plants were dead. They said the plants were no longer under warranty. They did not respond to further emails. Basically, I have a big open spot in my landscape where I removed the dead plants.
Description of Work: Removed old landscaping and installed new plants per the agreed plan.

It was a good experience. He had good ideas and listened carefully to what I liked and drew up a plan consistent with what I told him.
Description of Work: Provider responded promptly and came to my home to provide an estimate. As it turned out, the work I wanted included some construction that was outside the scope of their business. They did provide an estimate for the portion they could do and also provided a drawing of what the deck construction could look like and how their landscaping would be implemented.

I worked with Isaac to define and price the job. Isaac was pleasant and professional and knowledgeable about the work. My only issue was that we scheduled a meeting for an evening after I returned from work, and he instead showed up in the early afternoon when I was not there. We had to reschedule several days out after that. I was never sure what caused the mix-up. Originally we were going to have White Shovel prepare the yard for mulch and deliver and install the mulch, but my neighbor offered to do the sod delivery/installation for about half the price. Looking back at the drawings, I wonder whether the White Shovel calculations were accidentally for a much larger amount of sod than what I needed. Chris led the team that performed the work. Before they got started, he came out and reviewed the work with us to make sure what they did matched what we wanted. It rained a lot, pushing the work date out (naturally nothing to blame White Shovel for). When the work was completed, though, I was extremely happy with the quality of the work and felt that it was a great value. Now the sod is installed, and the yard looks entirely transformed for the better!
Description of Work: Prepared approximately 1200 sq. ft of earth for sod; placed mulch with trench edging over roughly 800 sq. ft (5 cubic yards of mulch); transplanted shrubs and flowers from sod-prep areas to newly mulched areas. Pruned trees and placed mulch circles around them.

They did a great job of removing old, overgrown plants and provided a beautiful new design that I am very pleased with. They guaranteed the work for 1 year from date of completion. I have had several plants to die. They replaced one but have not replaced the others. I had made numerous phone calls about repairs and did not receive a response so I contacted them on February 17 via email to replace additional dead plants and to make arrangements for reimbursement of the sprinkler system repair cost. When I did not hear from them I called to check on it and finally received an email on Feb 24, 2015 stating they would get back to me in a couple of weeks. It is now May 15 and I have not heard from them. I sent another set of emails today with a copy of the contract, bill for the sprinkler system repair, and pictures of the landscaping problems. I hope to hear from them soon. *UPDATE* I received an email stating that they would come replace the plants that died and pay their portion for the sprinkler system repairs. When they do this I will update my status.

Thank you for giving your advice, out warranty is a one year warranty, we don't go longer then one year, and we paid to have your irrigation fixed. Irrigation wasn't a part of the contract but we did want you to have your irrigation working. So we assisted you in getting it up and running. Since we only service the systems we put in. I understand your frustration with plants dying, however I think lashing out at us on Angies list when we don't honor the warranty after its expired is unprofessional. When your plants were covered under the warranty we replaced them.

I very much want White Shovel to make my yard into the dream place Mike envisioned, but other factors have caused me to postpone the work. Every time I look out my windows, I see what's there and compare it to what I know White Shovel could make for me there and I cannot wait for that dream to come true!

I purchased this landscape design package through Groupon. They came to my house three times: the first was to get an idea of what I wanted and to take photos of and measure the areas. They showed me the images during the second visit and asked if they needed to be changed. I received a quote for the work during the third visit, as well as digital images. They did not pressure me into purchasing landscape services and were very good about telling me which services should be performed by other companies because it would be less expensive to do so.

Had an initial consultation with their customer service consultant about a month before project was started. The consultant was very easy to talk to and I felt like he wanted to understand what we wanted to accomplish. He also seemed to have a lot of knowledge about drainage issues, so we felt like we were in good hands. The plan was drawn out and we agreed on the work to be done. The work team came in on the appointed week and got the job done in good time. There was a minor misunderstanding of the location for the collector grate based on a nuance in the plan sketch drawn up by the consultant. After we pointed it out, the crew re-worked the trenches and got the collector grate where the sketch had it placed. They did an excellent job and we are happy with the work they did. We will look them up again next time we need landscaping work done. {Update 3/8/13} While we were very happy with the work done at the time of project completion, our evaluation changed after the first rainstorm we had. The pop up emitter was about a half inch higher than the grate collector by the sidewalk, so all the rain from the gutters was flowing out of the grate right by the house and the pop up emitter in the middle of the yard wasn't emitting anything. The sales rep was very responsive, came out, and agreed with the problem. He said we could submit a warranty request through the website. In all fairness, I did not contact them. If I did, I still could not give an excellent review because we paid good money for a solution that did not meet best practices the first time. The installation instructions for the pop up emitter said a 1 percent grade must be accounted for. If they had just shot the pipe towards a valley in the yard, the requisite 5 inch drop could be achieved with the linear feet of pipe I paid for. I was also told by the sales rep that to cut the curb and run the drainage to the street would cost $500 for a permit from the city. Found out that was not the case from talking to the city. With a little more technical training of their staff, I feel the value they provide could be much better than it turned out for us.
Description of Work: Installed subterranean pipe to collect rainwater from downspouts and installed a grate collector by the sidewalk. Ran pipe out to pop up valve further away from the house.

The service worked out less than optimal. I was disappointed that they wouldn't actually get me a picture of what they did. They said what they could do, and showed me a picture, but wouldn't give it to me so I can show it to family members. The interaction was fine. I didn't spend more than the big deal price.

I ended up paying $220 an hours. For three guys digging in the yard. All the reviews have been coming up good and I don’t know how I hired them just to plant some specific shrubs/trees in my yard. The photos did not depict any of the plants that we initially discussed in our consultation. I had to remind them at least 4 times to complete the deal. I got overcharged drastically for the service. In checking I over payed for the trees. $1500 dollars later I have a garden that I did not think I was going to have. The photo design of a garden did not resemble the original consultation that I had with them. It’s just bad. They were only here 3.5 hours. That included planting the trees that we discussed. The valued that was placed on the deal was definitely not the value I received. They did give me a five year guarantee on the trees.

Response from White Shovel Landscapes
I wish there was a proper way of responding to reviews of our work such as these. I simply want to address some very important points that are being made here. First of all, White Shovel does not charge $220 per hour, we are a project company. Which means that we agree on a total price for the work to be done no matter how long or how short the job is going to be. We create exact layouts, showing you exactly whats going to be done. The pictures we create are clearly for your benefit, so you can see different ideas, and ways of laying out your landscape. When we meet with you the first time, we are there to discuss different things that you might like, and plants that you prefer over others. We then go back and create ideas on actual photos of your home. This is a very exciting process, and (of course) we don't always just use the stuff that you mentioned. As it is an idea phase, we want to make sure that you have a bunch of different ideas. However, we do create an idea that uses as many plants as we can use from the selection of the ones that you prefer. That being said, the designers are advisers, we want you to make good decisions when it comes to plants, and trees, so we will do a great deal of work to depict something that is low maintenance, and will be beautiful for a very long time. This can sometimes be confusing if you don't understand that the designer is there to help you make good plant choices. The other thing I want to point out is, that we don't begin work until we have agreed on a price, the exact plan, and result that you are wanting to accomplish. If we send 3 guys to complete the job, with the right equipment, and they get done early, I find it hard to believe that, that would be an inconvenience to you in any way. Also if 3 guys work for 8 hours, that is a 24 hours project, if 3 guys work for 8 hours using a machine, there work time can be cut in half, meaning they are doing the work of 6 guys, in 8 hours. Also, $220 per hour, that covers all materials, equipment, labor, delivery, and a 5 year warranty on the work, hardly seems expensive. I guess I don't understand, if you ask for something to be done, and then show me how you want it done, then I quote you a price for doing it, then complete it in a timely manner, exactly to your specifications, and then some; I thought that was doing good service. Also if you paid $49 for a designer to spend 6 hours designing, and 3 hours on site with you discussing things that you like and don't like, then he delivers photo ideas, of several designs for you to choose from or critique. Then he puts together a layout that shows exactly what he plans on doing. I guess I'm confused again, because it looks like a great deal, and I really don't know what to say. Except, I'm sorry you feel that way, and I'm sorry for any inconvenience our service has caused you. Don't forget we are offering incredible deals right now on installation in the winter, a lot of people don't realize that installing in the winter can be really good, plants are dormant, and ready to be moved, and planted. The only real differance is that plants that lose their leaves in the winter will not have leaves on them in the winter :) but this can make for a beautiful spring plant. Call us and schedule today.

The job was originally scheduled but White Shovel postponed it for 3 days due to other work. The three young men who performed the work were extremely professional and nice to work with. Chris, the landscaper, came by the see how the yard turned out. He noticed the Hostas were sub-standard. The Hostas that were planted were very small, not healthy and looked like they had been eaten by some insects. My townhouse yard is very small and the three (3) flower beds that were serviced were small areas. I definitely paid too much for this job, but it is my fault for not getting several estimates. White Shovel said they guarantee their work - so if the plants do not survive, I was told they would replace them. I am maintaining the plants appropriately; so I hope White Shovel honors their guaranty.

The work was started on August 5th, 2014. Immediately there was confusion regarding what the contract said and what the Installation people saw as the problem. Therefore what was on the contract was revised, in several areas in the scope of work to be done. There were days when only one or two people showed up to work, making the job last much longer than should have been. There were constant problems while work was going on, and just today, ( I never got a heads-up call saying he was coming) when they came back to "finish" up......after they had gone I saw another problem, where the pipe had not been laid deep enough so that the wash off from rain caused the pipe to be exposed. I called and he came back to shovel more dirt on the problem area. Yes, just to shovel more dirt on the area! We got into quite an argument, I told him I was not happy with the work, and that escalated the situation. They dumped the displaced materials in the forest next to my home, I had asked that they bring it back to fill in sunken areas, but no such luck.....so I still have sunken places in the yard that I will have to have more dirt brought in when the yard is sodded. The workers also sloppy. I know working and digging in the dirt is dirty work, but my hose, my sidewalk, and patio still have red mud shoe prints. They tried to wash it off with a hose, so now another expense for me is to have the whole area pressure washed. All I can say if that I am sorely disappointed in this company and sadly would NOT recommend their services. I did pay the bill in full, although now seeing what was done, the cost was way too expensive!

Response from White Shovel Landscapes
I want to say that we didn't have to revise the contract, but we did, after digging up the area we realized the problem she was having wasn't the problem that was showing on the surface. Drainage is tricky business, because water is tricky, as we could have came out and simply installed what was drawn up originally, we wanted to solve the problem, not just get done in a hurry. We brought went back to the drawing board and revised the contract according to the new information we had gathered by digging up the area. I'd like to say that the project didn't take longer the planned, but it did, we had to plan the project again based on the revision, different materials had to be purchased, and more digging had to be done. (I do want to mention here that no extra charges were charged to the client, as our goal was to solve the problem.) Is like to say there wasn't any footprints on the patio, but there was, red mud is a part of Alabama and in a single moment working when you walk across a patio and look back it's all over. We have taken new measures to ensure this doesn't happen again. However, 5-6 days of working in the mud, digging up her entire back yard that sits on a hill where the only access is the driveway, and the final result was a single set of footprints. I'm not sure I would clarify this as sloppy workers, but I do understand her concern. As far as pipes sticking out of the ground, these pipes were NOT installed wrong, they start at a high point and move along under the soil to a low point. The client was very particular that she would be handling the grass seed and lawn recovery process after we were done. This area is under trees, very shaded, and anyone who lives on the cliffs in madison will tell you, there is a lot of water that pours through. The water that comes across the top of the ground is washing away the dirt that was dug up, she has no grass, the past week or so prior to this we have had very heavy rains, water running across the top of the dirt is washing away the dirt quickly. We would love to solve this problem, but she made it very clear she was going to be handling this. However the client called us back after every rain while we were waiting to be paid and had us haul in dirt. Which we gladly did 2 times, finally, we had to draw the line. Sadly, it didn't go well, as we were completed with the work we had promised, and had completely solved the water problem, the final payment had to be settled. We enjoy our work and love to hear feedback, as we strive to be the best, White Shovel vows to study this situation and improve, because even though work was completed correctly, and the problem was solved, we never want our clients to go through any emotional stress while a project is going on, therefore we will be better. And we formally apologize for the inconvenience we have caused.

Isaac, from White Shovel Landscaping, was prompt and accurate with the proposal and estimate. Chris and his team, arrived at about 8:00 am on the agreed upon date. They worked diligently and finished work the same day. The garden they created is beautiful and my wife and I are extremely pleased with the results. Their guarantee - 5 years - is unheard of. We've had landscaping done by other contractors in our area but they cannot hold a candle to White Shovel. They are truly exceptional and we will certainly use their services again.
Description of Work: Initially surveyed flower beds in front and side of our house. Developed planting plan and advised on plants to use. Cleared approximately 60' x 8' flower bed of perennial plants, trees, bushes and weeds. Replanted beds with bushes, perennial flowers and trees that we had agreed upon. Laid approximately 40 sq ft of sod.

I think that is TOTALLY unreasonable and I would like my initial money back. I know things are more expensive in this market, but this was not for the whole property - just the front of my home!
Description of Work: I wanted an estimate for landscaping the front of my home and he told me the least expensive bill would be $3,000.00.
