Guin Service LLC

Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, Drain Cleaning,

About us

Guin Service began in 1958 as a group of specialized mechanics to compliment Guin Company s mechanical contracting company. W.C. (Bill) Guin knew that to have a successful contracting company he must have top mechanics to start-up and service contract jobs. Over the years the contracting company grew to one of Alabama's largest by doing quality work and providing exceptional customer service. In the mid 90 s as the top management of the company began to retire, the decision was made to discontinue the mechanical contracting division. Because of the loyalty of the employees of the service department and their many customers, the service company became an independent operation. Through the leadership of Ricky Lockhart, Manager; Keith Rotenberry, Assistant Manager; and Peggy Rice, Office Manager, Guin Service Company has continued to thrive. Associates Marvin Watson, Richard McDonald, Dewayne Todd, Tommy Thrasher, Jay Guin, Gary Rice, and their teams, have continued the legacy of friendly customer service. Each associate is highly qualified with 20+ years experience. As everyone knows, to have a successful business you must have the best people and Guin Service LLC has the best. Guin Service LLC has been in business since 1958 and strives everyday to make sure that customer satisfaction is guaranteed. Guin Service LLC is also a Certified Service and sales dealer for Generac Generators. Call and ask to speak to our expert Barry Nelms, and he will be happy to tell you all you need to know about the #1 selling Automatic Standby Generator in the country. W.C. (Bill) Guin, is retired but remains available for backup to the team. He is very proud of the continued success Guin Service LLC and has made plans for the operation to continue for many years to come. Joseph Braswell, a fourth generation member of the Guin Service family, started working with the company Jan. 2011 as the Director of Marketing and Customer Service. It is Joseph's goal to continue to build upon the reputation of Guin Service LLC, through community involvement and an unwavering approach to 100% customer satisfaction.

Marvin did a wonderful job. He sized up the circumstance, gave me a quote, applied the Angie's List coupon, and quickly conducted the work. What I had struggled to repair in two tries over the weekend, Marvin corrected on his first try. Marvin even consulted with me on another do-it-yourself repair while we gave the toilet some time to confirm the leak was repaired.

They do what they say they're going to do. They're very punctual. You know what it's going to cost before they do the work. I would highly recommend them to someone new in the area.

I called on the weekend and left a message as to what I needed. I got a call (voice mail) advising what the cost would be ($250) based on my phone information. I checked with another plumbing company but did not get a return call so I called Guin back and scheduled an appointment. This was Monday and they said the first available time would be Wednesday which was fine with me. On Wednesday the repairman (Marvin) called and said he'd be at my home in about 20 minutes. I told him I'd get home and he waited patiently about 10 minutes before I arrived. I thought I had a frostproof faucet and he said it was a compression? faucet. He said he could fix it in about 15 minutes so I told him to go ahead. He was very knowledgable and pleasant and was very efficient in replacing the faucet. Marvin did a great job and I think I just found a permanent plumber!
Description of Work: I had an outside faucet that was leaking and it was copper pipe which I'm not familiar with in terms of fixing the problem. It got to the point where we were wasting too much water and we needed the faucet fixed.

My initial call went to voice mail, and I received a return phone call from a plumber (not the office person) within a short time. Because my leak was not an emergency, I was later called back by the office staff who set up a service call. The plumber who visited was on time. He thoroughly tested the fixtures in the bathroom, determining that we did not have any significant problem. When I asked what I owed, he told me "nothing, I just dropped by to say hello." How cool!

I must write another report for Guin Service after having employed them twice more this year. A few months ago they repaired a toilet for me, and during their visit discovered our water heater was leaking both gas and carbon monoxide. They returned a couple of days later and installed a new water heater. Wish we'd done that six years ago! They came out today after we discovered sewage was backing up into our washing machine. They roto-rooted the sewer line, and also checked on another toilet that was making a funny noise. They discounted the price of the sewer line cleaning (since we're such good customers), and they assured me nothing was wrong with the toilet (rather than sell me something I don't need). They are punctual, friendly, knowledgeable, professional, and always diagnose and explain the problem and fix it. I don't know how their prices stack up to the competition, as they are the only plumbers I have used in Birmingham. But I honestly don't care, because I like them and trust them. Can't sing their praises enough! If the baby I'm expecting is a boy, he may be named Richard. ;)
Description of Work: Came a few months ago and replaced a toilet kit. Discovered water heater was leaking gas and carbon monoxide, so they came back in a couple of days and replaced the water heater. Came today and roto-rooted our sewer line after we discovered sewage backing up into our washing machine. Also checked out another toilet that's making a funny noise.

I thought that they were great. They were timely and they came and did the work immediately. They gave me a fair price. The plumber was fantastic, really great and very nice. I would recommend them because he could have probably told me anything and charged an arm and a leg. But, he didn?t. He just did the work needed and made sure that it was fixed. They were honest and I couldn?t ask for anything more in a plumber.

Discovered leaking pressure regulator Thu. evening. Cut all house water off. Called Guin first thing Fri. On the phone they told us it would be noon or later but Richard and his assistant arrived mid morning. Repaired it quickly, especially considering that our house has the old copper pipes throughout. Professionally done. Didn't comment on price because I don't know what plumbing costs are.

Excellent experience! Tenants currently reside at the home so I knew I had to act quickly. I immediately came to Angie's list to find a plumber and saw Guin's excellent scores. I contacted them to see if they could visit the property (I live out of the area) and tell me what they felt the issue was. I even got the estimate fee waived ($60) for letting them know I found them through Angie's list. They dispatched Richard. He was able to visit the home almost immediately. The tenants told me he was very thorough in attempting to identify the source of the problem, and they said he was very professional. I received a fax of the estimate the same day he visited the home. Guin's estimate was better than other plumbers in the area. I decided to hire Guin to do the work, so I scheduled an appointment almost immediately. The only thing I wasn't a big fan of was the fact that it would be about 5 days before they could come out and actually perform the services (a bit inconvenient since I had tenants living there). On the day of the service, Richard and his team were punctual and very professional. They performed all services as agreed. I was very pleased with their professionalism and honesty. They even went above and beyond because even after they performed the agreed services they realized that the leak was still unresolved. So they continued to inspect until they finally realized that the leak was as a result of a refrigerator ice maker line lodged in the wall behind the kitchen sink! They stayed until the problem was resolved. Guin also accepts credit payments and they are open for business at 0730 in the morning which was very convenient for me. I would definitely recommend Guin and use them again.
Description of Work: I had an unexpected leak that occurred in a rental property that I own. The initial source of the leak was unknown. The sewer pump was replaced, a leak beneath my front yard was corrected, and a pipe that runs from the attic and the garage was replaced.

We had a theft at our house - most of the copper and the air conditioning unit. We checked Angie's list and called the top three. Guin's was on the top so we thought they'd be reputable. We got an estimate from a serviceman, Ricky. He seemed personable and dependable. He submitted 3 estimates. Meanwhile we'd talked to a couple of other companies from this list as requested by our insurance company. They were all within 2-3 thousand dollars of each other. Guin was not the cheapest but since we thought they were reputable and we liked Ricky we decided to go with him. Until we called him. When he found out we had the insurance check and needed to know exactly how much money the plumbing and a/c work would be he suddenly became very, very vague. "Let's just make it an even $1????? for the whole thing" was his answer when asked for an itemized, every thing estimate. No. I want to know what it is I'm paying for before I sign on. So, he made an appointment to meet me at my house with his plumber today, Saturday, "on the dot 9 am". We waited till 11:30 without a phone call . He was a no show when it came time to give a true price and after he discovered we weren't going to accept an "oh, by the way, I didn't figure this" bill. Run, people, run.

Response from Guin Service LLC
In response to Mr. Member's comments, after receiving the request by Mrs. Member for an immediate estimate for plumbing and HVAC, I, (Service Manager Ricky Lockhart) left the office and arrived at her home as quickly as safely possible. Since both of Guin Service Inc.'s service managers live in McCalla we were very interested in working with Mrs. Member. Three estimates were given to Mr. Member for three options to solve their problems. When Mr. Member called about setting up the repairs we set a Saturday meeting at 9:00 to discuss which of the estimates they wanted to solve their problems. All options were in writing and would not change unless the scope of work changed. On Saturday unfortunately I had a family emergency that kept me from being at the 9:00 meeting. I did not have phone service for my cell phone to call the Members and advise them of the problem. I called Mr. Member early Sunday morning to let him know what happened and to ask if I could meet with them then. Mr. Member let me know that they had given the work to another company because I did not show up at 9:00 Saturday AM. I sincerely and repeatedly apologized for the unfortunate circumstances but I understood their position and tried to let them know that it was not a normal procedure. Guin Service Inc. delivers all estimates in writing and never performs work for any customer without clearly stating the scope of work and cost involved before work begins. Again, I sincerely regret the unavoidable circumstance preventing me from contacting Mr. Member on Saturday AM as well as the misunderstanding that the written estimates were a firm price for the scope of work on the three options given. During the height of the summer, I got several estimates to replace my failing heating and cooling system and chose Guin to do the work. I called the sales manager and gave him my approval to do the work. Since they were slammed, he sent someone over to temporarily rig my existing system to work in continuous operation (I would have to manually shut off the system). But after waiting three weeks (without hearing a word) I wound up hiring another company who came and put in $6000 in equipment; to date I've never heard a word from Guin. Guess the economy isn't so bad for them after all.

Thank you for your interest in having Guin Service Inc. provide you with an estimate to install your HVAC system. I apologize for the lack of communication, I have been trying to reach you by the phone number we have but we are only able to leave messages. Our records show several attempts to reach you, I had thought that perhaps you were going to try to go as long as you could with being able to manually shut the unit off and on. We appreciate the feedback and will be implementing measures to assure that we don't allow this to happen again.

The "service" package, which was priced at $50 per unit, covered very little. The company charges extra to actually clean the compressors with acid (water is free) and add freon ($50 to add freon and $30 per pound of freon). I would have thought that cleaning a unit and adding freon would be a standard part of a service package. I should have checked the details of the "service" package better in advance.

A/C quit cooling May 25, 2010. Had another company come out to diagnose. That company charged the system with 2 pounds of refrigerant and diagnosed a leaking evaporator coil. Took two days to quote $1400 to replace. Charged $150 for diagnosis and refrigerant. Contacted Guin Services for second opinion June 2, 2010 and technician dispatched the same day. Customer Service Rep. was very courteous, helpful, and accomodating. Guin repair technicianTommy arrived on time and quickly got to work. Seemed to do a thorough job of diagnosing and assured me that the evaporator was indeed not repairable as the first company had stated. Departed promising a repair estimate within a few days. Received estimate on Friday, June 4, 2010. After negotiating lower price, repairs were offered to begin on Monday but delayed to Tuesday June 8 at my request. Tommy and "helper" Spencer arrived on time Tuesday AM and got to work. Protected floor below attic access door with drop cloth and made consistent efforts to not track dirt in the house. During removal of evaporator coil from attic, Spencer lost control of the thing while coming down the stairs. Having delivered appliances in a former life, I couldn't help but notice that there were like 10 different ways that Tommy and Spencer could have avoided this accident. Think ahead and be careful are the two easiest ones. Also, Spencer could not seem to remember that there was a cabinet at the bottom of the stairs and ran into it repeatedly, knocking over the antique pharmacy bottle collection inside. After the repair, it was apparent that neither of them were going to mention the marks on the wall left when Spencer lost control of the evaporator. After I mentioned them, Tommy quickly offered to clean the marks off the wall with 409 that I provided. The marks mostly came off but I have a 9 month old and there will be marks far worse than these in the future. Two days after the repair, I was outside and noticed that the access panel to the condensor unit had been left loose. Called Guin, who had Tommy return to replace the panel that "Spencer had forgotten to install". Tommy asked to check some tape in the attic that he thought might not have held during the original visit. Overall, I am satisfied with Guin's service and would recommend them to others. However, I don't think that they were in A grade form during my visit. I rate them a B+/A- noting room for improvement.
Description of Work: Contacted Guin Services to get second opinion on evaporator leak diagnosed by another company. Guin confirmed the diagnosis and provided a repair estimate of $1575 two days after initial visit. Diagnosis and estimate were provided free of charge using Angies List Coupon. Guin agreed to reduce the price to the other companies estimate of $1400. Guin removed and replaced the leaking evaporator, recharged the system and tested. Guin returned two days later to reinstall access panel on outside compressor/condensor unit left loose at time of repair. During this return visit, the technician double checked and repaired some duct sealing tape he thought might have come loose after the initial repair.

Richard came out and went through our entire plumbing system. He said our pressure is fine and our hot water is old but still works. He said he couldn't recommend we do anything at this point in good conscience. Really???? Does this happen in today's environment? What a breathe of fresh air -- we live in a 60+ year old house and stuff breaks all the time; Guin has just earned a very loyal customer going forward. The company was a little hard to connect with at first but well, well worth the wait. I wouldn't waste my time calling anyone else.

I called to get a diagnosis and estimate on repairing a potentially broken sewer line. I had to call back several times before someone called me back. They said it would cost $350 to get someone out there with a camera to look at my sewer line. The high price was because they do not have their own camera and they would have to rent one from someone else. It came out during the conversation that they do not do big jobs like the one I was interested in and that is why they do not have a camera. Even though the company has a lot of veteran plumbers, the person I spoke to made it sound like they can only do small jobs, things that sounded like to me any reasonably handy person could do themselves. If they can't do big jobs that is fine, so I asked if he could recommend someone that could do the type of job I was looking at and he said he would not recommend another plumber. I understand not wanting to help the competition but he said they were not qualified to do my job anyway so he wouldn't really be helping the competition. I would have been less disappointed if they could have just recommended someone that was qualified for this job since they weren't going to do it anyway.

Richard and his son called me half an hour before the time slot I was scheduled for, which was great. They were friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. They quickly diagnosed the problem and fixed the drain. They explained to me exactly what had caused the clog, and where, and advised me on ways to handle the problem in the future. They also answered questions about plumbing issues unrelated to the reason for the visit. They made no mess. I was completely satisfied with the work, and will certainly call on them again when I need plumbing help!

Filled out the online service request form and about two hours later got a call that they were headed for my home. They showed up very soon after that and I explained the problem. They immediately gave me two options and two estimates. Option one was to fix/rework the old shower stems and option two was slightly more expensive but involved a new ceramic shower stem technology that would completely eliminate the washers. I went for option two. They worked for less than 30 minutes and then showed me how everything was fixed. They left no messes, were extremely polite, and we had a nice conversation as they were wrapping up and I was paying the bill. I've used several other plumbing companies in the past, but after this I will only be calling Guin and hope to get the same team (Richard and Blake) again.
