How to avoid post-Thanksgiving plumbing woes
Did you know that plumbing issues spike almost 40% on the day after Thanksgiving? In Angi’s latest survey, 26% of homeowners reported experiencing plumbing issues after hosting a Thanksgiving meal. The most common issues faced by homeowners were clogged drains, toilet clogs, and garbage disposal problems. As a result of this unpleasant increase, plumbers have coined the term “Brown Friday” to describe the day after Thanksgiving.
Yet, only 19% of surveyed homeowners had ever heard the term “Brown Friday.” Interestingly, among those who experienced plumbing issues after Thanksgiving, awareness and understanding jumped to 40%. Even without knowing the term, over 65% of homeowners reported taking measures to prevent plumbing problems during Thanksgiving. The most common method was avoiding putting certain foods down the drain, but there are additional proactive steps that you can take to ensure a clog-free holiday.
Angi is sharing the top tips to avoid “Brown Friday” clogs:
Keep Food Out of the Drain: To prevent clogs, avoid letting food go down the drain and be cautious with your garbage disposal. That includes steering clear of grease, disposing of food scraps in the trash or compost, and keeping turkey bones out of the sink. When you use the garbage disposal, be sure to run water simultaneously.
Be Prepared in the Bathroom: Ahead of increased bathroom traffic, empty and set out trash cans for guests so they don’t put anything in the toilet that they shouldn’t.
Call a Pro if Needed: If a plumbing problem pops up, it’s best to call in a professional. Plumbing issues can escalate quickly and cause water damage if left unresolved. Angi can help you find a plumber near you to prevent small clogs from becoming a costly problem.
Take these precautions to keep your Thanksgiving stress-free and avoid post-holiday plumbing headaches. With a few mindful steps, you can enjoy your feast without facing the dreaded “Brown Friday.”
