Top Furniture Restoration Near Columbus

This is my second review for Coup this year but because of the continued standard of high quality furniture repair and refinishing, I felt the review deserved a recent update as they have just completed several additional pieces for us. A large maple hardwood frame sofa, a side table and rocker were repaired, glued stripped and refinished and the finished product is fantastic. The wood glows and has been hand rubbed with Danish oil finish, not an easy process for any furniture restorer. The old metal rusted seat framing was removed and replaced with upholstery webbing and finished in sturdy fabric. The metal cushion frame on the rocker was kept in place and cleaned and made like new as were the original rocker springs. Awesome. Took chairs and a antique sewing kit to Steve for appraisal. He gave me the price and took me back to the shop and showed me other furniture that was being restored. These people are truly artisans. I am having him pick up a twin bed for restoration and more appraisals. He didn't charge for appraisals. The furniture the craftsman restored looked showroom new! He is very busy, and I'll have to wait for a while. And he is a bit pricey, but quality takes time and costs more. Can't wait until we get our family treasures back. Awesome experienceshow more

I dropped off one chair on April 28 so he could see what needed to be done. Was told that he could do the job and agreed on a fair price. He told me that he would not be able to get to it until about the 15th. of May. He was supposed to refer me to an upholsterer since he didn't do that part of the job. I did not hear from anyone by the 18th. of May so I called back and was told that the upholsterer was out of town and he would call me in a day or two to give me his name and number. I asked when he would like me to bring the other 3 chairs over so he could get the seats cut and reglue them. I was told that he couldn't get to it for another week or more. I waited about a week and called him back. It took 3 tries before I got an answer. He gave me the name of an upholsterer to contact to pick out the fabric for covering the seats. I called the upholsterer and made an appointment to meet with him to pick out fabric - it's now about May 26th. (two days shy of a month since I had dropped off the one chair at Custom Finishing and was no closer to having them done). Long story short, the upho;sterer told me he could cut the seats and upholster them and told me of another person he knew who would do the regluing. I decided to pick my chair up from Custom Refinishing and use these other people. Expect to be sitting on the chairs no later than June 10th. (probably sooner). Backstory: I have a table & chairs that have been passed down in the family from my great-grandparents, and are over 100 years old. The original finish is long gone, and years of use as the family's main table have taken their toll. I wanted to use it in my home, but every time someone would lean on it or sit down I cringed a little, hearing the joints creak. The table has three leaves, which hadn't been touched since the 1950's (maybe) and looked it. In spite of the work I knew I needed to have done to make the everything usable, the set has a lot of sentimental value; I was hesitant to trust anyone with restoring it. Details: Thankfully, Angie's list directed me to Mr. Brainard. After reading every review (like I said, a lot of sentimental value), I gave him a call. He responded quickly, and listened thoughtfully as I explained my furniture and its story. After confirming that he could take on the job, we scheduled a time for him to come check out everything. He came into our apartment and looked over the table & 4 chairs with the care and appreciation I needed to see to ease my nerves. He explained that refinishing the entire table would be rather expensive and suggested just doing the top, which he would coat with top-notch stuff that would protect the wood from everything from normal wear to UV rays. He would sure up the chairs by using a few new screws, to preserve as much of their character as possible. He called us the next day with an estimate and a few days later came back to give us a written estimate & take everything to his shop. Because I was unsure of what stain I wanted to choose, he brought some examples with him and let me decide. Less than a week later he called to inform us that the work was done, and brought everything back to us on a Sunday afternoon (the final cost was exactly the same as the initial estimate). The finish: The table looks amazing. I was concerned that sanding and staining the leaves and tabletop would remove some of the nicks that make them so cool (my great-gradfather used the table for butchering), but the work Mr. Brainard did highlights the natural beauty of the wood, including the "imperfections" that add to its story. It is very clear that Mr. Brainard is a true artisan and appreciates how special the table and chairs are to me. They are going to be the heart and soul of my home and I feel like they glow because of the care and expertise Mr. Brainard provided in restoring the set. I am so grateful that I was able to find Derek Brainard (thanks, Angie's List!), and I intend to use him in the future to restore the other 2 chairs that go with the table (if necessary). We're also planning on installing built-ins next to our fireplace in the future, and I can't imagine hiring anyone else for the job. David Leech is a top quality craftsman! He fully repaired and restored my grandparents’ antique oak draw leaf dining table and chairs. He even crafted a new mechanism to enable the leaves to smoothly extend and retract. The staining, clear coat and beautiful beeswax polish is exquisite. This furniture has a particularly meaningful place in my family’s heart, given it’s honored place at our little summer cottage on Lake Erie. In my move to Columbus, the movers broke a shelf and lost the wheel on my platform bed. The moving company sent “the best in Columbus” to repair the pieces, but they couldn’t repair the items, saying there was nothing that could be done. I asked the company to resend someone who really could repair the damage, someone who really was “the best in Columbus,” and they sent Clarke and Co. They turned out to be extremely courteous, professional and knowledgeable about what needed to be done. It was not an issue at all with them to repair the broken furniture. The window trim was made of curly maple and done to a design I wanted. Gorgeous stuff! And made very solidly, not the paper thin stuff many places try to sell. The cabinets and millwork were made to my design out of curly cherry. Really really beautiful wood!!! Dave has connections with a local sawmill and gets the best stock to work with. Dave does incredible work. The fit, finish, and quality is top notch. Cabinet and drawer bodies are 3/4 inch furniture grade plywood so they are extremely solid with a beautiful finish. Yes he does finish the parts that don't get seen much! The millwork (crown and base) are wide and very solid. Even though this was a difficult job his installation is outstanding. Perfect fit, invisible seams, solid attachment, etc., etc. He takes great pride in his work and will go to great lengths to make sure everything is done just so. He is also very easy to work with. On time, easygoing, adaptable, with excellent knowledge. I was able to describe to him the look I was going for. With a minimum of discussion he was able to produce a sketch that was exactly what I wanted. His work exceeded my expectations.
