Copper gutters can be tricky, because they are shiny to start, and age with the weather. So replacing gutters from damage could stick out like a sore thumb. But the folks at The Durable Group (Durable Slate) have it all figured out. They know exactly how to do work and how to make your house look its best. This is a phenomenally good company. As I mentioned in my other report on roofing, they are reliable, excellent quality, and they stand behind their work. We have used them before, and we were very disappointed that we had to repair the gutters and roof after a tree fell on our house, but they were out to our house within a couple of days and had repaired it within two days. It went very well. I have copper gutters on 2 side of the house and he discovered a previous vendor had put aluminum gutter screens on the copper gutters - which creates a chemical reaction and causes corrosion. I didn't know and was very glad he told me. He removed the aluminum screens, did some research to find copper bird cages to protect the downspouts, which he purchased and installed. He went above the call of duty to make that purchase for me. Job was done well and quickly. I noticed a day later that one of the downspouts was pulling away from the gutter. Needed one screw. Called Wayne, and he was out the next day and fixed it. Good job. Nice guyshow more

THEY ARE A VERY GOOD COMPANY AND DO EXCELLENT WORK - TRUE CRAFTSMEN WITH EXCELLENT CUSTOMER RELATIONS. THEY HAVE GREAT ESTHETIC TASTE WHICH IS GOOD FOR CONSTRUCTION. THEY SEEM TO BE A LITTLE DISORGANIZED WHEN IT COMES TO COMMUNICATION. IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE EVERYTHING IN WRITING SO THAT EVERYONE IS ON THE SAME PAGE. I cannot tell you how impressed I was with this company from the very first phone call. Friendly, helpful and responsive. They had an estimator out the next day. He commented on what how well installed great my slate roof is and the small piece that had fallen off was a decorative piece for around the chimney that did not create any leak risk. He did not recommend repairing that single piece but recommended I keep it and, if more pieces were to ever fall, they could include that in any future repairs to save money. He also checked the gutter seam and explained that soldering old copper was not the best idea but recommended which caulking I could use to fix it myself since the gutter was on a first floor addition and easily accessible by ladder. I was a little stunned that they could have easily made money on both things but he said that they didn't want to make money that way. This is a rarity in construction and restoration. If I ever have a need for roofing or gutter repair in the future (or any other type of work they do), I will be calling them firstshow more

THE SUPERVISOR RON WAS EXCELLENT, HANDS DOWN. NOT ONLY AN EXCELLENT SUPERVISOR, BUT A REAL CRAFTSWORKER WITH PRIDE AND KNOWLEDGE. THE WORK THEY DO IS EXCELLENT. ONE MAJOR WORD OF ADVICE: GET THINGS IN WRITING AND CLEAR, AS THERE IS SOME POSSIBLE MISCOMMUNICATION IN THE COMPANY. THE PLAN WAS TO DO SOMETHING, BUT THAT DIDN'T GET TRANSLATED DOWN THE LINE. HOWEVER, THEY WERE HONORABLE AND IMPRESSIVE IN MAKING SURE ALL WAS OKAY. WE AREN'T SURE OUR HOUSE SHOULD HAVE HAD A SLATE ROOF, AND THE COMPANY HAD TO BUILD SOME EXTRA SUPPORT. ONCE THEY CALLED BACK, WE QUICKLY NEGOTIATED AN ACCEPTABLE PRICE AND SCHEDULE. PRICING WAS MIDDLE OF THE PACK BUT THEY WERE A NOTCH ABOVE OTHERS IN EXPLAINING OPTIONS AND COMMITTING TO A HARD COMPLETION DATE. WORK WAS COMPLETED ON TIME AND IN A QUALITY MANNER. They did an excellent job. What made me decide to go with them is their different estimate on the work. It's a smaller company and it has a personal approach. They seemed to have a more personable approach. It wasn't necessarily the best price. They were very courteous. Once incident happened and they took care of that. One of their people got off the roof. There were no ladders and he went down the garage roof down to the driveway. The ladder bounced back and dented our garage door. EVERYONE AT DURABLE SLATE WAS VERY POLITE AND PROFESSIONAL. WE REALLY FELT THAT THEY TOOK GOOD CARE OF US, AND FELT VERY SAFE WITH THEM WORKING ON THE ROOF. THEY WERE PROMPT WITH ALL COMMUNICATIONS, AND WERE ABLE TO QUICKLY CHANGE AS NEEDED TO ADAPT TO THE NEEDS OF OUR HOUSE. THEY DID A VERY GOOD JOB. MY BOX GUTTER DOESN'T LEAK ANY MORE BECAUSE THEY LINED IT WITH COPPER. IT SEEMED LIKE THE JOB TOOK A WHILE TO COMPLETE, BUT THEY STUCK TO THE TIME FRAME FOR THE MOST PART. I HAD EYE SURGERY WHEN THEY WERE WORKING AND THEY WERE VERY ACCOMMODATING AND CLEANED IT UP SO THAT I COULD GET IN THE HOUSE WITHOUT DUST. They get top marks. I've used them before and they did terrific work so I called them again and again they did an incredible job. They came out and did some repair work, tightened them up. It is copper gutter. Probably most people don't work with it. It is important to the architectural look of the house to have this particular style of gutter. When I had the gutters put on 30 years ago it was a man and his son that did the work. When I called them this time, it was the son that came out. I thought it was pretty amazing that it was the same person 30 year later. I think it was a great price for the workshow more

They are very expensive, but the work was done in a prompt and professional manner and looks great. It ended up taking them quite a bit less time to complete the work than was originally estimated, so I requested and received an adjustment on the final bill to reflect that. I cannot say enough nice things about Durable Slate. Their work was an exact match to the 1916 era mortar on our house. They got the color right, the lime/sand/tint correct and the correct joint surface. Same for the chimney cap and the stucco work. Excellent and the match on the stucco was perfect. Total work came to $3,000. But this type of workmanship comes at a cost, and in many ways, Durable Slate is a luxury priced service. When we bought our new home in Baltimore we asked for a quote to replace the 80 year old copper flashing on the new house, as well as repair broken slates on the house and the price was simply beyond anything I could call reasonable. And after I recovered from the shock - $11k-15k for new copper flashing, some tuckpointing around two stones on our chimney, and replace a few slates on the roof, we simply couldn't justify that amount of money. (We actually found a native Baltimore slate roofer who did all of the work we wanted Durable Slate to do, but at 80% off their estimate - and the work is gorgeous.) So I would recommend them, and on the job we used them, it was a wonderful experience. But their charges in Maryland are very high and we could not afford them for our new "old" houseshow more
