Initially, we went to angieslist to review WOOD restoration/repair services. We called and described the problem and later followed up with a picture. Mr. Leech responded quickly both by phone and computer. He quoted a price of $45 after examining photo and assured us this was a common problem. This was a relief because this was an area we knew nothing about and didn't want to trust our valuable antique to just anybody. His pickup and delivery price sounded very reasonable however we did the transfer ourselves. We brought the piece on a Friday, he said he would have it done on Sunday and he kept his word. When we picked up the piece we found not only had he repaired the broken leg, but he repaired other aspects of the piece as well. We found his work to be above our expectations. We found him to be a very pleasant business owner and craftsman. Mr. Leech was courteous and professional at all times. Backstory: I have a table & chairs that have been passed down in the family from my great-grandparents, and are over 100 years old. The original finish is long gone, and years of use as the family's main table have taken their toll. I wanted to use it in my home, but every time someone would lean on it or sit down I cringed a little, hearing the joints creak. The table has three leaves, which hadn't been touched since the 1950's (maybe) and looked it. In spite of the work I knew I needed to have done to make the everything usable, the set has a lot of sentimental value; I was hesitant to trust anyone with restoring it. Details: Thankfully, Angie's list directed me to Mr. Brainard. After reading every review (like I said, a lot of sentimental value), I gave him a call. He responded quickly, and listened thoughtfully as I explained my furniture and its story. After confirming that he could take on the job, we scheduled a time for him to come check out everything. He came into our apartment and looked over the table & 4 chairs with the care and appreciation I needed to see to ease my nerves. He explained that refinishing the entire table would be rather expensive and suggested just doing the top, which he would coat with top-notch stuff that would protect the wood from everything from normal wear to UV rays. He would sure up the chairs by using a few new screws, to preserve as much of their character as possible. He called us the next day with an estimate and a few days later came back to give us a written estimate & take everything to his shop. Because I was unsure of what stain I wanted to choose, he brought some examples with him and let me decide. Less than a week later he called to inform us that the work was done, and brought everything back to us on a Sunday afternoon (the final cost was exactly the same as the initial estimate). The finish: The table looks amazing. I was concerned that sanding and staining the leaves and tabletop would remove some of the nicks that make them so cool (my great-gradfather used the table for butchering), but the work Mr. Brainard did highlights the natural beauty of the wood, including the "imperfections" that add to its story. It is very clear that Mr. Brainard is a true artisan and appreciates how special the table and chairs are to me. They are going to be the heart and soul of my home and I feel like they glow because of the care and expertise Mr. Brainard provided in restoring the set. I am so grateful that I was able to find Derek Brainard (thanks, Angie's List!), and I intend to use him in the future to restore the other 2 chairs that go with the table (if necessary). We're also planning on installing built-ins next to our fireplace in the future, and I can't imagine hiring anyone else for the job. Everything went great and the work is exquisite. I almost hate to recommend them as they are very popular so there is a wait. Steve Coup is very knowledgeable in regard to both the refinishing and upholstering processes. His crew is obviously first rate. Most all work must go to his shop. He picks up and delivers although I'm not sure what the process might be outside Columbus. As with many providers these days, we communicated mostly by email, which I like as then I have a record of our agreements. The work is not inexpensive--I paid a few thousand for the desk, an antique twelve sided table, two antique library chairs, ...but every time I look at them now I have to smileshow more

Grandview Mercantile recommmended the I call Big Darby Restoration, although they referred to them as Fabric to Finish. I had a antique metal park bench with peeling paint. I suspected that the paint had lead in it due to its age, so I wanted it professionally refinished. I spoke to John on the phone and explained the situation. He said that it should be no problem, but he wanted to take look at the piece before he could give me an estimate. After checking out the piece, he estimated the cost at between 600 - 800 due to the detailing of the bench and the added cost of handling lead paint. I also wanted him to make me a cushion. I told him that I was in no hurry to have it finished. About 4-6 weeks later, John called to say that the bench was finished and he could drop it off that same day if I was a available. He delivered the bench at no extra charge. It looked beautiful. I am very happy with his work. THEY DID AN EXCELLENT JOB WITH EXCELLENT WORKMANSHIP. THE WORKMANSHIP IS EXCELLENT AND I MUCH PREFER THEM TO OTHER COMPETITORS. As suggested on his website, I sent an email with pictures of the cupboard and the cracked door. Steve called me back right away. He was very helpful and candid about what could be done and providing an estimate of what the cost would be to do a repair and refinish. Because I was also considering painting the furniture instead of refinishing it, he was candidly honest and told me that it would be an easy do-it-yourself project if I decided to paint instead of refinish. He gave me advice on how to go about preparing the piece so that it would look good when painted. He was very professional and informative. Although I have not yet decided if I am going to paint or refinish, I wanted to at least provide this review of Steve's professionalism, excellent responsiveness, and willingness to share his expertise regarding how I could potentially fix the unit myself if I decide to paint it.
