This August (2014), I signed a contract with Gem city to replace the roof of our house with a verbally agreed upon start date of the first to second week of October. As this time drew closer, I contacted them to fix a specific start date. At that point they noted that they were behind and that the start date would be more towards the end of October. Again, as that time was closing in, I contacted them to fix a specific start date. Yet again, Gem city noted that they were again behind schedule, and pushed us to the start of November. I again called them as that time was closing in, and again, Gem city was not able to confirm a date for the work to begin. It should be noted that the weather throughout this period was beautiful and warmer than usual. As the cold weather finally broke at the beginning of November, I called them again, and was informed that Gem city won't be able to start the work until next year. In the meantime, our roof has sprung a leak, which I realized as the snow was melting. I called them on a Monday to see if Gem city could send someone over to patch it up, so it would hold until they would replace the roof this spring. I was told that someone would contact me the next day to set up an appointment. No-one contacted me. I called again on Wednesday and left a message. No-one got back to me. On Thursday, my wife stopped by at Gem city's office, and their employee that I had been dealing with literally turned her back on my wife. I still had not heard anything by Friday and was forced to contact other roofers. Gem city's complete lack of costumer service is appalling. Every single time another starting date was closing in, I had to call them to find out nothing was going to happen again, instead of them contacting me. It should not be hard to plan work just over a month out – yet they are unable to do this. Their incompetence in this regard is shocking, and they are clearly unable to perform their duties. I called the city to see if a building permit had been applied for work on our roof. I was informed that no building permit for our address had been applied for. I learned later that they don't apply for a roofing permit until they will start work - so fair enough, I guess. Considering that Gem city has failed to start work as agreed upon, I was forced to cancel my contract with them and find someone else that performs as promised. After emailing them to cancel work, they keep being completely unapologetic. They are blaiming me for delaying things because I showed up to pick shingles in early October. This was after they had already pushed me back to the end of October. They also keep blaiming the weather. September and October were in fact unusually warm, and it was no wetter than usual. Said Gem City: and quot;Roofing is very weather dependant and it was a very rainy fall which turned quickly to snowand quot;. There was no snow until November. That is not and quot;quicklyand quot; at all, but typical. *You can't blaim bad weather when the weather was better than usual* All this is no excuse for terrible communication and not informing us about delays, again and again. They also claim that there were several emergencies that they had to push to the top of their schedule. I don't believe it for a minute as no-one got back in touch with me or responded to my messages when I had a leak, let alone actually came over and fixed it. They could have had the courtesy to tell me that their staff was out of time (which they claim now), but never did. What I believe happened is that Gem City bit of far more than they could chew this fall, and kept having and quot;delaysand quot; because they were underequipped / understaffed for the jobs they accepted. I don't consider myself very unreasonable and non-understanding of the nature of the work. I can accept that delays happen. But don't blaim bad weather when the weather was good. I'm not that stupid! Also, to keep delaying work that should have begun in early October to November, and then spring is BS. Keep away from Gem city roofing if you actually expect to get the roofing job done anytime close to what they tell you when you sign. Keep away if you expect your contractor to contact you to in case of a delay. In general, keep away.
Description of Work: Wound up doing nothing at all except waste my time.
