Advanced Heating and Cooling

I have filed a complaint against them before. They sent me nasty messages and all kinds of stuff. I think they are awful. I filed a Better Business Bureau claim against them. I just think they are horrible people. They were on time. They are not qualified to be in the business they are in. They do not have the knowledge. They installed a heat pump on a very old air handler, while the reality of the situation was that everything needed to be replaced. The system stopped working within 24 hours, they did not call back, it took multiple phone calls to them. When they did call back, and they did come out, they replaced the thermostat saying that was the problem, while the reality of the situation was that the heat pump was not made for the air handler. They should have not done that from the beginning. I went to a lawyer, I filed a BBB complaint, and I lost.

They're professional and fast workers. Recently, we had a problem with one of the units. I called them up and they came out the same day. They looked at it and got the system running again. They found out from the manufacturer, Carrier, that there's a problem with some of the components sometimes. It's rare, but they do have it. They sent out the parts, and Advanced Heating and Cooling replaced them, and I didn't have to pay anything. It was over $2,000 worth of components, not including the labor to put them in. They did everything.

Overall, the service went well. It was a complex install and took over a week to complete, with a couple minor issues that were promptly taken care of.

I emailed the company through their website, after a couple of days someone called to schedule an appointment. They were apologetic for not noticing the email and scheduled someone for the following day. The guy came out, was nice, actually a bit ahead of time. Took the time to look around, talk about the issues, said it would be 2 days before I received a quote. After 2 weeks, I called and left a message. After 1 more week, I called and left a message. Almost 1 month now, no return call, no estimate, nothing. I chose this company because of the positive reviews on Angie's List. Maybe they are good, if they bother calling you back. Very disappointed and still very cold.

I bought an older and larger home that needed some TLC including some work on the furnace. I got a couple of quotes from vendors in Morgantown, and Advanced was very competitive, even my neighbor had used them. I made the decision to go with Advanced and I am glad I did. The equipment I finally decided on came in to their shop in just about a week. Within a few days they had me scheduled for the install. The guys came in and completely replaced my system all in one day. They were very friendly and answered all my questions during and after the install. They even showed me my old system as it was being removed and the cracks the exchanger had developed over the years. It was definitely time to get fixed. I got the performance line furnace from Carrier, and I couldn't be happier. My house heats up so much better than it used to. I had as good experience as one can expect, and for a fair price to.

Josh was our service technician and is extremely knowledgeable. After coming out to do the initial quote, he made some recommendations on improvements that we went with and have already noticed the difference. They rewired our thermostat to run our propane furnace, installed several relays and installed a new thermostat to run the outdoor furnace. They also fabricated a section for out plenum to reduce major air leakage (created when the outdoor furnace was installed) and make the system more efficient. Additionally, after exploring the pros/cons of the options, they installed a switch on the outdoor furnace to run the pumps, allowing us to run the indoor furnace if necessary while ensuring the water pipes wouldn't freeze without draining them in the outdoor furnace. Communication and service throughout were all top-notch. Josh is a sharp technician and knows his stuff and he's extremely helpful. I know just enough to be dangerous and felt confident in his recommendations. He wasn't just trying to make money, but rather recommending what he felt was right and made the most sense.

Our furnace stop running Sunday night during a severe cold spell (minus zero). It was 40 years old and we had planned on replacing it in the spring. We got two estimates. The estimator for Advanced was also an installer so he knew what was possible given certain idiosyncrasies of installation. He was much more knowledgeable than the other estimator. He did not "oversell" and try to get us to buy a furnace that was too large. I needed to be clear about some of the issues regarding installation but he picked up on others right away. The crew was polite and professional and very very clean. And, they did not seem to mind my questions and comments during the installation process. I would not hesitate to use this company again and have recommended them to my friends.

We had a great experience with Advanced Heating & Cooling (AHC). Our furnace was about 22 years old, and we were aware that it was time to replace it. We called AHC during one of the first cold spells of the winter season, so they were very busy. They were still able to check out our furnace in a timely manner. Josh from AHC came out and went over several options. He was extremely knowledgable and professional. I was very grateful that he was not pushing a sale... He put together a few estimates and gave me time to make a decision. We were very happy with the process. Two other gentleman from AHC installed the unit. They were very friendly and worked efficiently to get the furnace replaced. After the installation I called Josh to ask him a few questions, and he came by to make sure the unit was functioning properly. He said to call him anytime we had questions. This is the kind of customer service that you can't put a price tag on... We look forward to using their service this spring to replace our air conditioner.

We had four companies come to our house to give quotes. Only two actually responded with the written quote that we requested. Although Advanced Heating and Cooling did not come in with the lowest price, we selected them because the gentlemen who came out to give the quote, Jim Sopko, took the time to really answer our questions. He also gave us information about how to potentially re-route our duct work when we remodel to increase the air flow to the second floor of our house. The actual installation was handled by two technicians. They were very professional, cleaned up after they were done, and relocated the lines and elevated the new unit exactly as requested. One technician, Mr. Riley, took the time to go over the registration process for the new unit so it could be properly warranted. He also patiently answered all of the questions we had - and I had lots of questions. They installed the unit on a miserably hot, humid as the devil's armpit, 95 degree day and they finished the installation the same afternoon so we would not be without AC overnight. We would definitely recommend Advanced Heating and Cooling, in fact I already have referred them to a co-worker. Our one and only issue is the same one we have with almost every contractor that we have ever dealt with. Communication and scheduling. This company was very prompt in coming out for an estimate and we signed and returned the contract as required. We understood that that we would not be put on the schedule until the contract was received and we sent the contract at least five times via email before the company finally got it. We knew from speaking to Jim that it would be about three weeks from the time he received the contract until the work would be done. It took several weeks and a few phone calls and messages left, which were promptly returned each and every time, before we finally were given a tentative installation date. (We would like to say that we really appreciated that our calls were always returned.) In the end it took much longer than three weeks but we also understood with ninety degree plus temperatures the company would be very busy and that would delay things. At one point we were so frustrated with trying to get an installation date that if we hadn't signed a contract we would have called another company. If the company could just have been better at communicating an installation date it would have made things much less frustrating. Both of us have jobs that we can't get last minute time off from easily. We were told each time we called that we were "moving up the list" but that doesn't mean a lot. We just needed an installation date so we could make arrangements. In the end, we decided to still give a very reluctant A in the responsiveness category because, although it took a long time to be given a tentative date, our calls were always answered promptly and when we finally got a tentative date the installation was actually done on that date.

It went okay, but the system is failing again - they will be making another visit in the next few days. The tech was professional, but about 45 mins late. Total time on site: 30 mins or less.

I have a 2 ton AC unit which I assume is the original unit in our town house built in 2001. The AC unit stopped working in June and within 48 hours Advanced H&C was able to evaluate the unit. The tech Josh was young (early 20's) but knowledgeable and explained his steps of evaluating the AC unit. I had noticed on my fuse/breaker box, the AC switch had been tripped and with resetting it it did not fix it. Josh opened the unit and saw that the compressor plug had come off and the plug appeared to have melted a bit, which had probably tripped the breaker. He then tested the capacitor and said it was shot. He replaced it with a universal one for $121 and then tested the amps that the unit was pulling. He said that for a split second it was pulling 50 amps and then would go down to 6 amps which showed that the unit is starting to go bad pulling such high amps. He said if it pulls over 54 amps for more than a few seconds, it would be done. He then placed a compressor hard-start kit to help give it an extra jump if needed ($85). I was concerned with the plug being a bit melted but he said that he wasn't too concerned about it, and that it would not be a fire hazard, but would just trip the breaker if it overheated or fell off again. His diagnostic/labor fee was $75. The unit was working when he left but that same day the unit shut off and the plug had fallen off again. I called him back and 2 days later he replaced the plug with another one for free (i found the replacement plugs online for $44, so I was happy about this). The plug was nearly identical but may have not been an exact replacement, but Josh said it fit very snug, and to this day the unit is working and the plug has stayed on. I checked with an electrician and he said that if the plug fit snug, then it should be ok because the wiring is the same. Overall I was glad that Advanced heating and cooling was able to fix the unit. Josh did a good job diagnosing and fixing the unit. Pros: quick to respond, professional, explained his work. Cons: Capacitor replacement may have been a bit pricey at $121 but better than having someone tell me that the whole unit would need replaced instead of applying some fixes to it.

UPDATE 3/18/2013 Advanced is still not returning my many many phone calls and messages. It has been 40 days and I have called 25 times. I suspect they are screening my calls because I almost invariably get voicemail, both from the technicians whose numbers I know, and also from the main office line. They will not return your phone calls! Their constant ignoring of my calls shows that they do not stand by their work; because our system is not working properly, they have decided to just ignore me until I get tired of calling. Original Review: From the start the system was underpowered and apparently not designed well. It cannot get up to temperature in the house. The thermostat they installed is off by 5 to 15 degrees. The system is noisier than ever, providing constant background in our house. The heating now runs about 20 hours a day, regardless of outside temperature, and has been doing so for over a month now. After over 20 calls and multiple missed appointments, Advanced still has not fixed the problem, and shows little initiative in doing so. They will almost never return your phone call, so it does little good to leave messages.

I first hired Advanced Heating and Cooling to perform a pre-purchase inspection of the HVAC systems in a 20-year old home I was purchasing. The HVAC expert was professional and diagnosed several problems with the existing system. I met with Joe at his office to get a ballpark estimate of the cost to replace 2 gas furnaces and 2 central A/C units. Once I bought the home, I met with Jim at my house to do the actual estimate. Jim's estimate was spot on. It never changed, except for additional items I added to the project. A crew of two men handled my install. It was completed from beginning to end in 3 days, which I though was excellent for a 2-unit system. The crew was flexible to work with me to change the duct work to accommodate the fact that I was eliminating an interior wall. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. I should also add that my father and brother were both contractors and I have worked with numerous HVAC contractors over the years. The guys at Advanced Heating and Cooling are at the very top of all HVAC contractors I have every worked with. I highly recommend them for all your HVAC needs. All work was performed right the first time. I have not had a reason to call the company back. I do plan to engage them going forward for a Fall and Spring inspection, though.

Furnace was not repeatedly igniting. Technician rapidly found a problem, removed and replaced part, and witnessed single successful ignition. However, after he left, furnace would not repeatedly ignite. Called Advanced and the technician was promptly rescheduled and returned and fixed a second problem quickly then observed several ignition cycles. This successfully fixed the furnace. However, the second bill included a second charge for a service call and, together with the first bill, about double the actual technician time. Good news: since the entire problem was not fixed on the first call, we obtained - without hassle -a very satisfactory adjustment to the bill. Service was professional and prompt and, with the adjustment as noted, entirely satisfactory.

The servicemen that installed the heat pump were very good to work with . They were very careful and cleaned up any dirt that they made while installing the heat pump. Were very concern about doing a good job hooking it up. Had a problem hooking up a humifier that we ordered in addition to the heat pump. It took another 7 months to get it to work, but everytime I called about it they came out and worked in it. Am very happy with their work

The installer was very knowledgeable and completed the job a couple of hours. He then reviewed his work making sure there were no leaks and everything was working properly.

Jim Sopko, the owner, dealt with us and was wonderful. Professional - reasonable - pleasant. They are in high demand so the wait time was 3 wks - but well worth it.

As I stated earlier, Advanced Heating & Cooling first provided us with a timely estimate. Advanced was the highest estimate that we received but we really felt that they had the most experience and could handle the difficult job that we were asking them to do. We live in a 1970 Mobile Home that we have built all around. The mobile home has no basement and a very low crawl space. We have baseboard heating in all the rooms that we have built on and just wanted heat and air for the mobile home space. There are only two of us living in 13 rooms so we close off the heat in the rooms that we don't use very often. Jim gave us a quote for whole house with all new duct work, a quote for just a fan coil whole house but not the gas furnace (at this time, we were going to keep our old furnace and just get the heat pump/air conditioning unit) and a quote for just the mobile home heat pump and air conditioning unit. We then decided that we only wanted to do this once so we also wanted to replace our furnace with a more efficient one. Jim then provided us with another quote. This matched the type of quotes that we were getting from other companies. Jim was the most expensive but he was always there to answer our questions, he understood what we wanted, and seemed to know the most about what we could use with the Mobile Home (not all furnaces can be put in Mobile Homes due to the size of the duct work). I wanted a High efficiency furnace, heat pump, and air conditioning unit. I also wanted one that met the Energy Star Rating. After giving Advanced Heating & Cooling the job, Jim ordered the units and set up a date to start the job. The job was started and completed on time with Joe and Greg doing all the work. They were not only professional but very easy to work with. They answered all questions, ask us how we wanted things if it could be done a few different ways, cleaned up after they were done, and made sure that the job was not only done right but was done neatly. The furnace was a little taller than my old furnace so they didn't have much room to work. That didn't matter, they took their time and got it installed to the point that it looks like it came with the mobile home. All holes were patched (neatly) so that I would not get any little bugs getting through any holes. Since we had a second roof they had to climb up on the old mobile home roof to piece together the pipe and then get up on the new roof to finish bringingit through. Joe had already measured this pipe to be sure that it was not too long of a pipe for the specifications that came with the furnace. Joe and Greg had to crawl under the trailer to install a drain line and some other lines that went with this duel fuel system. When installing the thermostat, I didn't want any holes in the floor or carpet so Joe and Greg ran the wire from the top of the trailer down the wall. It looks great and I have no holes in my carpet. They had to cut through the trailer roof to run the wire so when they were through, they patched the roof so that no bugs could get in there either. When Joe and Greg set the poly pad for the heat pump/air conditioning unit, they made sure it was level but they also moved it out away from the gutter overhang so that if ice would happen to form on the gutter and then fall when it starterd to melt, it would not hit the unit. The shut off valve was placed out of site but still the wires running to it were straight and neatly attached. These guys were the best workers that I have had the pleasure to work with .......ever. Everything was tested before they left, the duel fuel thermostat was set and explained, with the understanding that if I ran into a problem programming it, I could call them. Joe had already done most of the programming so that he could test the units but he also said that we might change our minds and want to reprogram it ourselves. When the guys ran into something that was unusual or unexpected, they never complained. They just put on their thinking caps and came up with a way to do the job. They never wasted any time. They were always on time, had all the equipment to do the job, and were always pleasant. Even though the job had alot of unusual things that came up, the guys knew exactly what to do. Experience really did matter in our case. We are very pleased with the job that was done and the company that we went with. If you have any Heating or Cooling that you need done and you are in the Morgantown, WV area, you would be doing yourself a favor if you called Advanced Heating & Cooling. They really know their stuff!

Great, they even recommended a contractor who helped me with other construction issues in my home which is ACI Restoration. I can't say enough positive things about Dave and his team. They will be my go to guys for heating and cooling. Thanks again Dave for all your help. -Jeri Reed

Advanced Heating & Cooling installed a natural gas Rinnai RC98HPI tankless hot water heater in my 7 year old home as I was looking to get rid of my conventional electric hot water tank. I met with them at their booth at the Mylan Home Show in Morgantown, WV and asked for an assessment visit and estimate. That happened very quickly and had the unit installed within a week. They arrived on time and were very professional throughout the entire installation. I was very pleased with the installation and the attention to detail. I also received a follow-up phone call from the company owner to see how it went and how satisfied I was with the work and the unit. I highly recommend Advanced Heating & Cooling. As a matter of fact, I am going to use them for my HVAC work as well. Great company and staff.

Sometimes we had heat. We called another Heating dealer, waited a day, and they told us we had a bad heat exchanger to replace the furnace as soon as possible as it was unsafe. They gave us an estimate that seemed high to us so we decided to get a 2nd opinion. We called Advanced Heating & Cooling, they were here the same day and after inspecting the furnace told us the heat exchanger was fine. They explained to us why we had heat "sometimes". Seems the blower motor was over heating, and shutting down on the internal over load protector. We could have had the motor replaced but decided to replace the old furnace with a new 95% Carrier energy efficient model. They explained how it would pay for itself with the money we saved on the gas bill. Advanced installed our new furnace the following day and we are totally happy with their service and installation departments. We would definitely recommend them to everyone!

UPDATE 2/2013 While we were very happy with the initial install, there were many leaks in the system that needed to be repaired. This was understandable given the size of the job. They missed two appointments to fix the leaks with no phone calls. When they did come, most of the leaks were not fixed adequately and had to be re-repaired. Again, this was understandable but they then missed at least one of those appointments. Then the repairs needed to be fixed. We recently had more work done on the system by Advanced and they have missed two appointments so far, again with no call. I marked down their responsiveness, punctuality, professionalism, and the overall experience. Once you get their attention, they are professional, knowledgeable, and good to deal with. I have found the overall experience frustrating though. ORIGINAL REVIEW Advanced was very professional and did a great job with our new boiler. Charlie was our technician and he was really skilled, professional, and thoughtful about future additions. He removed pipes and sweated additional tees to make the future addition of other radiators possible. He also installed numerous check-values and ball valves so that if we need repairs in the future they will be easier (and cheaper). It wasn't on the estimate, but he installed a water pump to get rid of some condensation so we wouldn't have a tube running along the floor. His group did a great job running thermostat wires inconspicuously too - not an easy task in our old house. You could tell throughout that he took pride in his work and knew a lot about it. We got three other quotes and all were within a few percent of each other. All were for high efficiency boilers and for adding a zone to the basement, one to a carriage house behind the main house, and one for the main house. The house previously only had one zone. Advanced included a fourth zone (upstairs/downstairs/basement/carriage), which required a lot of extra work, for the same cost as the others. They also worked closely with the Utica boiler rep, who actually designed the system. A proper design is essential for these high efficiency systems so it put our mind at ease that so many people were involved. Our only complaint is that they were understaffed for our project so it took longer than they had expected. It was a big job, and some overruns are to be expected, but it was cold some nights! Advanced provided us with electric heaters, which really helped, and of course stuck to the original cost estimate. I rated the "punctuality" and "responsiveness" down to try to reflect this. Overall, they are great, and do high-quality work. We wouldn't hesitate to hire them again.

My first contact with Advance was Feb. 2011 when the furnace went out (on a Saturday) during the coldest week of the winter.This particular property is student housing & my son is one of the residents. He contact Jason @ Advance and by Monday we had a new heating system. Jason tried to fix the existing unit to see if he could limp it through until the replacement arrived. We realized that a new A/C unit would be required by summer and after price shopping, stayed with Advance. They were extremely professional, efficient and competitive price wise. I highly recommend them.

i called advanced and scheduled a "winter check-up" and had to call them back because the check-up suddenly changed to repair. when the day and time for the appointment came, the repairman did not. no call, no repairman, nothing.....so i called the company's office and left a message....no return calls...so i then sent an e-mail...a week later i received a call from the "boss" and he did apologize...he had been on vacation that week....i had to call another company who came out the next day (good thing since the temps had dropped into the 30's for several days that week.). i cannot recommend this company.

The technician seemed very experienced and knew what he was doing. He quickly fixed the problem.
