chimney sweep, gas logs
+ 0 moreI feel that I was ripped off by a business that I trusted from other installs they had done for me. I realize now that I had never had a problem in my chimneys before. I guess it takes having a problem to reveal the ethics of a business. I asked for the money back for the damper only because I believe it was unnecessary. If my safety was a concern, as they said, the chimney would have been cleaned before anything was installed. This business has branched out into too many varied interests and no longer care about the customers who made them.
Description of Work: Sold me a nice set of unvented gas logs but did not look in the chimney to see the condition of the fireplace. They did however, insist that I buy a chimney damper for $350 to allow me to open the damper even though the logs were unvented. When that was installed, rubble fell into the gas logs and all over the fireplace. The entire flue had been destroyed years earlier and lay in the upper area of the chimney as rubble. No cleaning was done or suggested. After looking up into my fireplace, I called another chimney sweep to take a look. They told me that I should not burn the fireplace until I get the chimney cleaned. They also said that something should be installed right over the logs to keep anything further from falling or crawling into the chimney. Fireside and Patio would not return the money of the damper which only shuts off the top of the fireplace. The other chimney sweep said that as long as you have fresh air coming into the room with the fireplace (via a slightly open window), the damper was totally not needed. I called two other businesses that sold unvented gas logs and they agreed that they had never heard of putting a damper in a fireplace unless the logs were to be vented.
