Wonderful service, I've been a client for several years now, scheduling our first exam and cleaning on purchasing our house, which had had a wood stove removed and some odd mystery things going on with the chimney. Someone local had recommended him. And I really wouldn't want to use anyone else now. Rick is professional, courteous, reliable, honest, very experienced. I've scheduled annual cleanings since that first, and when the chimney didn't need it, he let me know it was clean and didn't charge me. He could have just gone through the motions and taken my money, and he didn't! That is something you don't get very often in this world. At some point I know we'll probably need to have maintenance done on the wood stove, and I'll go back to him for that, too. I have absolute confidence in his expertise. Being patient with scheduling service is worth it. This isn't a big business with a lot of employees, there is just one man, and he can get very, very busy. It can take a little while to get a call back sometimes in the busy season, but he also supplies an email address which he suggests using for follow-up in his voice mail. Considering how often calls can get dropped when you think you're leaving a message in this rural, mountainous area, emails as a follow up are probably a good thing.

I left at least 8 messages and never got a call back. The answering message is that he will return the call. Don’t consider this good business and is incredibly unprofessional. Has two names for the company: Up in Smoke and Peacepipes. I don’t understand how this guy can stay in business. I am incredibly disappointed that I at least did not get one call back indicating he could or could not do the work. That’s all it would have taken. What’s worse? This guy is actually considered one of the best in Berkeley Springs, WV. Have no idea how that rating came to be.

It didn't get that far.

I read only good reviews on Mr. Lauderdale's website, I called from work and left him a message with my cell stating I needed my chimney cleaned. They are in Berkeley Springs and I am in Hedgesville. He never responded or called me back.

This sounds like a great company and clearly is one definitely concerned for customer needs for fast service in cold temperatures. They have a nice online site. If they obtain proper licensing I am highly likely to give them a try but licensing is a must! I was going to take a chance on them anyway and felt frustrated that after asking more about licensing and bonding i never got answers to repeated phone calls to them but in the end that is to their credit in that they realize customers have serious concerns and perhaps will use that input to go ahead and get the licensing--and bonding!

Rick did his usual awesome job. I had scheduled him to come out and sweep one of our two chimneys (the wood stove, we didn't use the fireplace last year). He showed up on time, inspected it, declared it perfect and not in need of sweeping.

My experience with Rick and Up in Smoke Chimney Services was stellar! Rick is very responsive, friendly, thorough, and knowledgeable. He first came to my house to assess my if my fireplace and chimney could accept a wood-burning insert. He was generous with his time and super laid back; absolutely no pressure at all. He answered all my questions...and others I hadn't even known to ask. I'd originally considered a Vermont Casting insert; he shared the reasons he sells only Regency. But again--no pressure; he told me that he would install my insert of choice--even a second-hand one--as long as it was safe. Rick and his assistant, T, just installed my second-hand Regency today. They were extremely careful about covering my wood floors and protecting my furniture, and about warning me when there would be noise from their machinery. Rick really gets into his work--literally! I took a photo of him sitting inside my fireplace installing the chimney liner. I would not hesitate a second in recommending Rick and Up In Smoke Chimney Services.

Contacted Rick 2 weeks ago to check our chimney chase and cap for possible leaks. He came to our home within 3 days and recommended a new stainless steel chimney cap to replace the original metal cap. He sent us an estimate and scheduled the work for today March 13, 2015. He reported exactly on time and replaced the cap and also swept the chimney flue. (The sweeping was set up to be done when he replaced the cap.) Rick is very responsive and his prices are very fair. He did an outstanding job and I will refer him to friends. I will definitely use him again.

He took care of a clog that was in my chimney. Everything went very well and I am grateful that he was willing to help me on such short notice!

Rick is very responsive, was able to fit me into his schedule and did a great job clearing out my seriously backed up chimney. He's an honest and reliable person, cares about his trade and uses the right tools to get the job done safely and without leaving a mess. I would recommend his services without reservation.

I contacted and quot;Up in Smokeand quot; to clean our chimney. Rick Lauderdale was responsive while scheduling the appointment and stayed in communications prior to arrival on the day of service. Rick inspected the chimney visually and determined that a full cleaning was not necessary. He did adjust the damper and went to the roof after I explained I had placed a metal mesh over the chimney to keep stink bugs out during the Fall. He showed me that the mesh was quickly collecting ash and would eventually lead to a poor draw. He removed the mesh. He told me about top-closing dampers that make it unlikely that insects could enter the chimney. He sent me an estimate for installing one of these dampers. He also told me about some cracking of the chimney crown that would have to be repaired to ensure water could not enter the chimney/flue. Bottom line is that and quot;Up in Smokeand quot; is a good company for customer service and Rick is very professional.

Went good. When sweeping the chimney Rick noticed my chimney liner blocks were not mortared. They were just dry stacked and this is not good since they were moving up and down. We bought the cabin this year but its been around for about 16yrs. Previous owners didn't use wood stove much. Rick said previous owners are quite lucky it didn't burn down from a chimney fire. Looking at having to re-line the chimney now. I'd like to offer Rick the job if he'd call me back. I've been waiting now over a week for a return call. Really like Rick but I may have to take my business elsewhere if he doesn't get back to me soon.

I have been using this chimney service for a couple of years now. Mr. Lauderdale always shows up on time. Is always courteous and professional. He also checks out your roof when he is cleaning the chimney. Last year he discovered a soft spot on our roof. A portion of the roof was rotting and needed to be replaced. We had Mr. Lauderdale perform this work and we were very satisfied with the result. We were happy that he discovered this problem before it caused a major headache for us. I do not recall now what he charged for this work but I do remember that it seemed reasonable. This year while servicing our chimney, Mr. Lauderdale discovered that our chimney had cracks in the liner and that all indications showed that we had had a chimney fire last winter which we were unaware of. I told him that we did have some problems last winter while burning our woodstove but had no idea that it could have been a chimney fire. Again, Mr. Lauderdale has saved us from what could have been a major disaster if not for his attention to detall while performing his job. I contacted Mr. Lauderdale last week and we have set up a date for him to install a new stainless steel liner in our chimney. I will write a review on that work once it is completed but I have no doubt that he will earn all A's again. It is so refreshing to find an honest hard working man in today's world.
