We were initially excited, as we built our home about 5 years ago and just now got to putting in a lawn. The well-priced quote helped in this regard. During the consultation, Mr. Fencil suggested waiting until fall to seed. My wife said, "I don't care when....I just want a lawn." (By which she meant she would wait if it was in his professional opinion to do so.) He chose to interpret it as to do it immediately without asking for clarification, so we wound up having a seeded lawn WITHOUT a sprinkler system during one of the worst droughts in recent history. My wife and I were aware of the difficult situation, and are not normally tough people to deal with. It is also worth noting that during the brief time Mr. Fencil felt responsible enough to check on our progress, he lavished praise upon us for our dedication to watering using our two hoses and sprinklers. He said that any difficulties growing were not due to anything in our control. We bought and spread Turf Builder as per his suggestion; continuing watering dilligently and mowing as necessary. By this point it was mid-August and we had not spoken to him in about a month, and we're wondering if/when he will stand by his work and reseed areas that are clearly not going to grow in (1/3 of the lawn would be a conservative estimate). We begin calling weekly, and hear nothing throughout the remainder of August and September. Finally October 1st I had enough. We had an outstanding balance of around $1400 that he had not attempted to collect on. That coupled with his refusal to return our phone calls led us to assume we were "cut loose" so to speak. I sent him a letter including 14 photos of areas that were not growing in, and advised him we were not going to pay for an incomplete project (perfectly polite but also thoroughly highlighting his lack of professionalism and quality work). Now it is two weeks later and of course we have received a letter threatening legal action if we do not pay in full within 30 days. He also claims to have stopped by numerous times during the midday hours, and having seen "lights and TV on with no one answering the door". I do not believe him any further than I can throw him, and if you are a potential Fencil Landscaping customer reading this I cannot suggest strongly enough to find a more dedicated and professional landscaper.
