Work was done while we were vacationing in California, upon return installing contractor was trying to repair bad stain blemish in foyer. Found that all wood door jambs and casing were about 1/4" above the new wood floors and that numerous nails were left exposed above the replaced shoe . These were nails that pulled through the old shoe upon removal? Discussed with Thomas means taken to fix blemish in foyer. Repair removed about a 1/16" of wood floor, leaving a depression in the foyer. That blemish involved more than the one board that he was working on. By doing so, it was picture framing the blemish. His final approach was to add an additional application of finish throughout. Owner expressed concerns about trapping dust and hair particles into added finish. Contractor said that they would clean before applying. He did a poor job cleaning before applying and now new finish has dust, hair and dirt imbedded throughout. Contractor was paid in full and was told that blemish fix was not being accepted by owner. Owner sent numerous inquirers as to when blemish would be repaired. These inquires were ignored. Owner send 3rd inquiry with due date for contractor a to complete or owner would contact Better Business Bureau and whom ever necessary to get action. Owner also contacted numerous Flooring Companies requesting advise and estimated costs to correct blemish. 2 Flooring Companies responded and both viewed blemish onsite. Both said that the only way to fix this was to remove the finish and stain, resand, restrain and reapply new finish. Owner requested quotes from these companies and neither would guarantee a stain match. One quote excluded redoing the living room, the other included all rooms, this being that the finish Thomas applied was easy to work with but was not a product recommended for heavy traffic areas, such as ( kitchen, kitchenette, foyer etc.) Flooring has numerous scratches and is only 7 months old. Copies of their quotes were forwarded to Thomas Floor Design, that he claimed were inflated and he offered to paid $1,500. Quotes copied to Thomas were $2,700 and $3,300, owner requested $3,200 to cover his costs for moving furniture, clean- up throughout and vacating home during application of finish. Thomas Floor Design said that his lawyer would advised on acceptable cost and send written letter. This has not been done. Owner used Thomas Floor Design based on recommendations from relatives. Floor was poorly sanded before stain and finish were applied, owner repaired missing nail hole putting, removed exposed nails. Thomas has been given the opportunity to complete this work him self.

The work on the new floor which included the family room, kitchen and eating area, and mud room were not what I had hoped for. Chatter marks were throughout the rooms, like the drum sander was out of balance. It appeared that there was no blending of the total floor to make it flat. It looks wavy now. Stain was okay. The older wood in the dining room and foyer was installed 25 years ago. This needed to have the stain sanded and matched to the new flooring. There is several areas that show swirl marks from the edger that were not blended into the rest of the floor before staining. The stain was allowed to set longer around the perimeter of the room or the sanding grit was different than what was in the rest of the room as it is noticeably darker a foot into the room at all of the walls. When the finish coat was applied they sealed in debris in many areas leaving the floor rough. Its obvious cleanliness or checking ones work was not of a concern. Grit was in each room but the majority was in the dining room. We contacted the manufacturer of the finish and the told us that the finish would fail premature with the grit trapped under it, that it is contractor error. When I notified Thomas of the issue of the stain and grit in the dining room he attempted to hand sand some of the grit out and touch up the finish. Still not acceptable to me since the staining below was not applied correctly and he agreed that to remedy this the area would need to sanded again. We cannot go through another week of living in a motel while the floor cures and also it makes my floor thinner. I asked for the cost of his charge for the square footage of that area be retuned to us. He refused and said its not how he does business. I cannot recommend this business to anyone. I have tried to hire small businesses in the past for certain work. They are trying to make a living. But lesson learned now. I'll be going for a "brick and mortar" company in the future. IN a final email from Thomas his response is it is within industry standards. If that's the case I can see why people are buying prefinished flooring now. He hurts professionals.
