I spent $50000 on the project. From start to finish, the project was perfect. The job that they performed was excellent, and their price was excellent. They were pretty efficient. The job was done quickly. They were very clean. I would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Reconstructive Concepts 6 months ago. They did a bathroom remodel for me.

It went very well! Mike was thorough and very knowledgeable about what to do and how to do it correctly the first time. Their quality was extremely high and prices were very reasonable. I have some projects coming up and will certainly be using Reconstructive Concepts again.
Description of Work: Installed kitchen, dry walled extensively, tiled bathroom floor, ran electrical to various points in house, etc.

Grade: F. I assume and trust that any contractor has done due diligence in hiring employees, subcontractors, acquiring materials, etc, but this contractor stated he did know the cabinets he was installing were made in China. Not doing your homework: F. Given the well-known health hazards of Chinese toxic drywall, children?s items with lead paint, and etc, I would never have chosen these Cabinets. He also complained about mileage to the vendor's location in Cedarburg--I hired this contractor in part because I like to support to neighborhood businesses. He chose the distant vendor; don?t blame me for the mileage. Grade: F. I also feel an already bad situation was exacerbated by a great deal of misunderstanding and miscommunication and I cannot explain why. For example, I would request or agree to his offers to have something fixed. When these were not fixed, he stated both in conversation and writing that I refused to have them fixed. A drawer blocked by the range for example. This completely baffles me. There are instances in which I disassembled some of the contractor's work, thinking this is my house, I am paying for all this, and it must be redone right anyway. I did not realize until after the project's completion that I was crossing a line and not allowed to do any such thing. Other things that puzzled me were things like the use of floor molding as cabinet molding and vice-versa, (especially when they are complete different colors and style) unfastened molding, significant gaps, an improperly installed outlet box. Grade: D. A few of these things were corrected when the contractor was asked to, but many remain unresolved. The counter top is another chapter. From our conversations when picking out tile I was under the impression a there would be a wide variety of laminates to choose from and it turns out there was nothing available I liked and I had to settle--and sign an agreement for--a laminate that was "acceptable." The counter is amateurish and I would have done a better job myself. A seam in the counter top is in a focal point of the room, in at least one place the counter is not cut straight (a gap as thick as a dime or penny), and in several places the wood edging is not flush with the top. Grade F. Now what I really feel deserves an F for professionalism: When I asked the contractor to stop at my house to resolve these issues or provide some refund he became loud, insulted me personally, and used profanity (it was all recorded). I sought mediation through the BBB, but as of yet have not heard back from them so I will try mediation through Angie?s List.
Description of Work: Removed soffits, installed tile drywall backer, installed tile floor and backsplash, installed electrical lighting and outlets, painted walls. Installed cabinets, molding, and trim. A $19,000 mistake that I am ashamed to admit I actually paid for. First, the good things. The contractor did a very nice job on the tile for the back splash and it was great that he met me to pick out tile. The contractor installed can lighting in the ceiling and may new outlets around the counters. I am very please with the electrical and wall tile and the contractor was very patient and compliant with changes I made as the project progressed and in my opinion the contractor deserves an A in these areas. Unfortunately, I feel the contractor and I had divergent views on "professionalism" and "quality" and I am also very much a perfectionist, especially a major project like this for which I made many sacrifices. The biggest issue for me is the cabinetry which is also reviewed separately under Customer Service Hardware/www.rtacabi.net. Despite some good construction features the cabinets are overall very poor quality. About 28% of the , cabinet shelves are bowed/warped and 25% of the doors are warped or otherwise do not lay flat against the cabinets. These are defects that in my opinion any contractor should have recognized and corrected as soon as possible without being asked. I was so disgusted with the cabinets I twice went to the vendor myself. First to see if this vendor was a legitimate business (the contractor wrongly assumed I went there to buy more cabinets, God forbid!). Second, to resolve why defective shelves, that had still had the "replace these" note on them from me to the contractor had not been replaced after three weeks.

Response from Reconstructive Concepts
The member has now made ridiculous complaints against me, some of which are contradictory and others that are flat out lies. The member has made all sorts of accusations against me, including but not limited to, me being an illegimate contractor and showing him false pictures of work my company has done. We are going to go through BBB third party arbitration to resolve this issue because he will not allow me to “fix” the“defects” he claiming. I have attempted to resolve this but he seems to only want his money back, which I am not going to do unless ordered to by the BBB arbitration. The majority of his complaints seem to be about the cabinetry HE PICKED OUT! I never stated that the cabinets were made in America, no where in the contract does it state he was getting American made cabinets, and the member never mentioned anything about wanting American made cabinets. If I am supposed to disclose where all the materials used in this remodeling project were manufactured from I wouldn’t be able to. The tile I believe was manufactured in Brazil, I think the Durock is made in Mexico, I don’t know where the screws are manufactured… I think I made my point. I represented the cabinets as what they are. Solid maple face frames, all wood construction no particle board, flat panel doors, with dovetailed drawers with soft close slides. It is a fact that this is what they are. I buy them from CSH hardware in Cedarburg Wisconsin (which is a local company) and they are manufactured buy RTA cabinets. Originally I bid this remodeling job as a cabinet refinish but he decided he wanted new cabinets because they were such a reasonable price. I don’t use high pressure sales tactics and this decision was his to make. He chose a style that CSH carries in stock so we were able to do his change orders quickly because all I had to do was drive to their warehouse and get them. Ok a lot of this you don’t need to know but I have made countless changes to his project all of which were in allowances built into the contract that should have resulted in me billing him extra, I did not. He signed off on these changes and also signed off on the counter top material. I’m sorry that he does not like what he picked out but that is not my fault or my responsibility to financially fund his remodeling project. After he had paid me the final payment I returned a week later to install addition trim above the cabinets at no additional material or labor cost to him. While we were installing this trim we noticed the member had pulled a bunch of doors off the cabinets and removed some of the base/shoe trim from the cabinets. He had consistently altered work we were doing as we were installing it so we took little note of it. On jan.28th I received a voicemail message from him thanking me for coming back and installing this trim and that he wanted to pay me the extra cost because he knew it was not covered in the contract. At that time he also asked what could be done about a few of the shelves that had slight warping to them. I returned this call and explained to him that I was not charging him anything extra from the additional work and that CSH was willing to replace the shelves at no cost to him. A week after this I went to meet with the member because he said he wanted to discuss some of the workmanship issues with the job. I assumed he had a punch list because it is standard for customers to create a punch list at the end of the job, although it usually comes before the final payment is made. I walked into his home to find another contractor leaving and a third party standing there staring me down. He then basically insulted me and the work I had done. At this time I noticed it looked like he had taken a razor blade to spots of his counter top and he had removed a lot of trim and doors. He then hit me with a right to cure letter and stated he did not want me to fix any of the “defects” but wanted a full refund. I was going to lose it so I took his letter and gave him a written response the following day. Attached is a copy of that response. He has refused to let csh or myself replace his ”warped doors” or allow a third party electrician to fix an outlet I beleive he pulled out and can’t get back in. His job passed all city of Milwaukee inspections and was completely up to code. I am requesting that his complaints not be listed in your magazine because I have done above and beyond my contractual duties to the member’s kitchen and I don’t think he’ll be happy unless he gets money back. I take a lot of pride in the work I do and have worked very hard to gain a good reputation and would hate to have it ruined by one homeowner trying to get free cabinets.Today I received a phone call from the BBB informing me that the member has yet again changed his mind and now is refusing BBB arbitration. The BBB has seen fit to close his complaint against me and considers the matter resolved and will not be posting his complaint against me. I am not sure what else I can possibly do to try to appease this man. I am going out of my way to try and solve this problem but he has decided to continue to slander my company name and refuse all reasonable solutions to his complaints. I am asking again that Angie’s List sees these complaints against me for what they are, a harassing attempt to get free work. I am going to seek legal council on this matter in an attempt to get him to cease any further slander of my good name. I am currently working for another Angie’s List customer and am confident he will give me a good review. I look forward to doing more quality work for your customers. Mike Duvall, Owner
