Maple Lawn Cabinets

When we first talked to David, we intended to have him make a few cabinets and match them to our old cabinets. David suggested making all new cabinets and after hearing his price we decided to go ahead with that. David is Amish. Because of that we were concerned with the ability to communicate with him and his ability to get to our home in timely fashion. But he had been recommended by neighbors that had David do their kitchen and bath cabinets, so we agreed to have him do the work. As it turned out it was very easy to reach him by phone and he was quite prompt at returning our calls- even in the evenings or Saturdays--- but never on a Sunday. As far as him getting out to our home, that was never a problem. He was able to get here every week or two during the remodeling for measuring and bringing the cabinets out and installing them. It took about 4 weeks from start to finish. There was only real glitch. I told David I needed an extra bit of space for the dishwasher and refrigerator because they would be really squished otherwise. Unfortunately, the cabinet sizes I had chosen didn't allow for the extra space. In measuring for the cabinets, neither he nor I caught the problem. Once the cabinets were installed I realized that the extra bit of space (about 1 inch) had disappeared. Then I had to decide if it was worth the effort to have the sink cabinet re-made an inch smaller. I didn't want to trouble David for 1 little inch, but once the counter tops were measured for I new it would be soon be "irreversible". So I called David and asked him if he could re-do that cabinet. He said it was no trouble. I offered to pay for 1/2 of it because it was my design he was following and he would have to make two more round trips from LaValle, WI. Fortunately, he had another job in the Madison area and was able to combine the trips. Sometimes that meant waiting a day or two longer for him to arrive, but that wasn't too long. After everything was installed, he worked at tweaking all of the cabinet doors to be sure that they closed evenly and put little bumpers where when opened the cabinet doors would hit against a wall or something. He wanted to be sure that we were completely satisfied- and we are. All of the doors and drawers are self/soft closing and the hinges are "European hinges". The drawers are full extension so that I don't have to reach underneath the counter to get to something that is way back in the drawer. The cabinets are maple with birch drawers and sides. I don't remember what the backs are made of, but there is no particle board. Overall we are extremely satisfied. Everyone who has seen the cabinets says they are really beautiful.
