2016 SUPER SERVICE AWARD winners, Guttersmiths Exteriors offers a range of services, with a primary focus on gutters and roofs . PLEASE EMAIL JOHN@GUTTERSMITHS.COM FOR ALL INQUIRIES.
We were so happy to have found John to do this work. He specializes in gutters, so he really took the time to examine the problems we had with our old gutters and figure out a good solution. We had a lot of overflow problems with the old system, and we've had absolutely no problems with the new system. Our new gutters perform great in heavy rain, and they look great, too! John is a terrific tradesman who really takes pride in his work. We were so happy with our new gutters, that we recommended John to my parents. They hired him and are extremely happy with their new gutters, too.
Description of Work: John replaced the gutters on our house and 2-car garage with new 6" k-style seamless aluminum gutters, 3" x 4" downspouts and EZ Lock leafscreens.

Above and beyond. We needed work while in the process of selling our home. John at Guttersmiths gave a fair and timely estimate for our gutter issues, and was able to help with some miscellaneous roof & shingle repair in addition to gutters. Great communication during a busy time before winter, great followup. Quite frankly, Guttersmiths enabled us to complete several items requested for repair by the prospective buyer of our home. Not just gutters - which needed some replaced pieces as well as a good cleaning - but replacement of some missing shingles and repair/replacement of "ridge caps" on the roof. The buyer wasn't asking for a new roof, but there were clearly areas for maintenance. Not a single roofer in the Madison area had time for the repair work being requested. Scope of those items was simply too small, and every roofer in town has been busy due to a hail storm about a month ago. John and his team were able to address our gutter issues, update an old heat cord where ice damming can occur, and replace/repair missing shingles and ridge cap. We highly recommend them.

We hired John and his team to initially replace our roof. When I visited his site, I noticed that he also did siding work. When he stopped by to provide roof samples, we asked him about replacing the siding as well. He provided lots of good samples, including actual size roofing shingles, which made the task of selecting siding and roof colors and textures much easier. The original siding on the ~30 year old house was a neutral beige color. It was beginning to warp and show other signs of aging. It also looked extremely dull. My daughter, wife and I took the samples out to the yard and placed them up against the brick facing. This allowed us to look at a wide variety of color options in context. We selected the shingles we wanted and then used those colors, plus the colors of the brick facing, to narrow down the possible choices. John offered an upgraded siding option, a vinyl shake, as well as the traditional look. We opted for the shake in a golden straw color for part of the pop out of the second floor, wrapping around to the back, and traditional siding in a green copper patina look. We are extremely happy with the results and receive regular complements from our neighbors on the upgrade/update of the exterior. Once we settled on our choices, John picked up the samples and setup a time to do the roof install, doing that first so that the new siding wouldn't be damaged by the roof tear-off. The roof install went very well. His team was very professional, courteous and efficient. They did a great job on the roof and promptly cleaned up any messes that were made. The only issue was the destruction of a couple of plants that I had described as important to protect. They will survive, but more care there would have been appreciated. While the roof work was being done, John ordered the siding and supplies. The vinyl shake was special order and could not be returned, so he conservatively estimated the amount that would be needed. Unfortunately, we needed more than was ordered. In addition, the siding salesman over-promised the delivery times and the work was delayed while waiting for the vinyl shake. The same team that did the roofing did the siding work with the same level of professionalism. A mistake was made in the tear-off of the soffit above the porch. It was left open for several days and a mouse got into the space in between the interior wall and the brick facing. I had Batzner pest control (also recommended) come over and place traps and double check for other possible entrance points. John deducted that call from our bill. John is extremely conscientious about his work. He was very apologetic about the siding delay and the couple of mistakes that were made. He promptly addressed those issues and we are happy with his handling of the situation. This is the second time we have hired John. The first time was to place gutter guards. We are very happy with his work and we highly recommend him to anyone considering roof or siding replacement.

Guttersmiths did an excellent job of replacing my 5” aluminum gutters & downspouts and installing Leaf Solution stainless steel mesh gutter guards, which handled the 3” heavy rain we just had with no problems. Quality installation and good communication and follow through. I choose Guttersmiths because of their competitive price, positive reviews, and quality and durability of their installation plan: closer spacing of gutter hangers, stainless wood screws to secure the gutters, and aluminum rivets for the downspout connections.

Crew was professional and quick. Completely removed and disposed of old gutters. Crew installed seamless gutters in the areas that I requested. Gutters look great and work, for the most part, excellent. While cleaning the gutters in the summer I noticed two of them were not angled correctly. I found these two gutters held small amounts of water on the opposite from the downspout. I keep forgetting to call them to see if they would fix the problem. It isn't a lot of water, but enough to be slightly annoying to my OCD.

It was ok. It seems to be working. The biggest issue I had was the paying extra, but almost everyone had to because most gutters have a longer running linear. It was not a total surprise but a tad misleading. The clean up was not the best, later in the season I would find bits and pieces of middle. They did the job quickly and it works. They showed up on time.

I hate to do this, but I'm going to anyway. I chose this contractor based solely on the Angie's List reviews. I called them this past Wednesday noon and left a message, saying that I need new gutters and would like to get the covered kind, and asking them to call back so I could make an appointment for an estimate. No reply. I called back Friday morning, leaving basically the same message. It's now Monday noon and no reply. That's three business days with no reply to my calls. I will say that I called only the general number, and did not call either of the "if you need help right away" numbers given on their answering machine message, since I DIDN'T need help right away, I just wanted someone to come to my home and give me an estimate at some point in the next week or so. I considered calling those numbers today, but honestly, since it seems that Guttersmiths doesn't want or need my business, I don't actually WANT them to come out and give an estimate anymore. It must be nice to have so much business that you can afford not to return calls from potential customers. I'll be looking elsewhere for gutter replacement services. I realize that Angie's List will give this review less weight than other reviews, because no work was performed. Believe me, I would have LOVED to have rated Guttersmiths based on their actual work, or at least the estimate process. But that's kind of hard to do when they don't return phone calls!
Description of Work: Nothing! That's the problem! They never returned my phone calls.

[Member Name]! Sorry for the delay. We have been working out-of-town in Yuba, WI without phone reception for the past two weeks, and will be on that project for about another 6 weeks. We start another large project when we return to Madison, but will be better equipped after Yuba is finished to squeeze in smaller projects. I'm back in Madison this weekend checking up on emails and voicemails (and enjoying time with the family). Starting this week, I will have someone checking voicemails during the week and relaying messages to my email while out of town. That being said, we are currently booked until early November - I *may* be able to do some estimates on weekends but won't be able to perform any installations until later in the Fall. If you're still interested receiving a quote, please email john@guttersmiths.com and we can try to arrange a time to meet. Sorry again for the lack of responsiveness! It has been a bit of an adjustment working out of town in an area with no phone reception but I think we've got a system ironed out now. Thank you, John

They provided a very speedy estimate and an even better discount than I had through Angie's List. They performed the work within a week of our first contact. We have had a very rainy summer and the gutters and downspouts are working very well. No more drips like I had with the old gutters.
Description of Work: I purchased the Angie's List Big Deal to have my gutters inspected and repaired as needed. As I expected, it was a better deal to replace them. The old gutters were removed and new gutters and down spouts were installed.

Wonderful! Michael came out and I told him what we wanted done. We were very open on the time frame, since it was such a little job, we just left it open for whenever he could fit it in. He repaired the damaged downspout and redirected it so that spout won't be subject to snowplow damage in the future.

It went great. Michael and the crew were prompt and professional. They cleaned up each day and did the best they could working in freezing weather and snow!! They had to come back in the spring and correct a few small problems - they were pleasant and attentive to our concerns. Given the conditions they worked in it is amazing more things did not go wrong. We love our new gutters!!! The maple tree in our neighbors yard can make all the helicopter seeds it wants to now. Our gutters just wash them through - no more clogged downspouts!!!

It didn't, they never came back, nor did they send an estimate. They were very slow at responding to emails and didn't return the two calls I made. I emailed them on the 11th, got a response (no appointment) on the 15th. Emailed the 21st, no response until today May 3rd when they said they understood if I wanted a refund.
Description of Work: I bought a deal on Angie's list, paid on April 3rd. I had a downspout that had been taken off by the wind, so was eager to have work done. This deal was for a maintenance type visit - on the 7th someone came to look at my house (not to work) offered to replace my downspouts for somewhere in the area of $500, I declined and asked when they could do the work offered in the deal and fix the downspout, the representative from Guttersmith's said they were busy the week of the 7th, but would send me an estimate as well as work my "maintenance" work in, the week of the14th. On the 15th I heard from Guttersmith's that they would let me know when they were in my neighborhood (didn't set up an appointment). I emailed on April 21st and again on May 1st when I finally asked for a refund.

Hi (Member name removed), I am really very sorry for your experience with us in regards to this big deal. I would like to clarify a bit our recent experience with Angieslist, which will hopefully shed some light on what has transpired with these “deals.” Angieslist assigns each vendor, like Guttersmiths, a salesman that is responsible for setting up Big Deals, negotiating terms, etc. Over the years, all of them have been pushy. Our current salesman, [Angie's List employee], is particularly manipulative and pushy. After repeated calls and follow up emails from [Angie's List employee] that have bordered on harassing, and after I told him over and over and over and over again that these deals don’t make business sense, he started calling Mike who handles our sales. [Angie's List employee] was able to manipulate Mike into agreeing to the terms of the $75 Big Deal by saying things like, if you can’t upsell, you’re doing something wrong…Or, all of these other companies were able to upsell their customers while running the same deal, if you’re a good salesmen you can too…Or, these are qualified leads, think about how much money you’re going to make…Or, make sure you send your best salesmen out there to upsell. On the surface, it is bizarre and counterintuitive that a company model based on helping homeowners find good contractors is actually encouraging those contractors to aggressively upsell homeowners and burn bridges. AL membership revenue, however, is only a small fraction of the advertising revenue they receive from contractors; looking at the numbers, it begins to make sense why they are so aggressive and persistent with us, to the detriment of the homeowners. I am extremely upset with Angieslist and the way this has played out. There are three parties involved in these Big Deals, the Vendor, the Homeowner, and Angieslist, and the only consistent winner is AL. The homeowner, without realizing it, is buying into a deal that the vendor loses money on unless the homeowner agrees to do more work. This is a terrible way to start a relationship with our customers, and we won’t be running any more deals unless the terms are favorable for all three parties involved. We usually approach each estimate as the beginning of a partnership with the homeowner, and look forward to building lasting relationships with all of our customers. The lack of responsiveness is unacceptable, regardless of the contract amount. I also wish all of the above was explained to each of the homeowners to help the homeowners understand what’s happening behind the scenes. If there is ANYTHING I can do to help make this right, please contact me directly at my email: john@guttersmiths.com

This was a weird purchase from the start. They were plenty interested in selling me other services such as installing gutter guards and making modifications to the existing gutter system and they were very prompt in providing estimated costs. Not so good at providing any information on the system they planned to install. When I contacted them and told them that I did not wish to install the system and merely wanted the service contracted for on Angie's List they would not return my phone calls. When I asked for a refund, I was told that Angie's List takes 100% of the $75 and that they could issue a refund.

They were very prompt with all communications and on time for appointments. The metal screen product they installed was a very high quality - heavy duty, which I needed because the gutter is under a black walnut tree. I would recommend them to anyone. Everything went great. I purchased this Big Deal from Angieslist because I wanted to install some leaf screens on my home's gutters. I also wanted someone to take a look at a gutter that appeared clogged/backed up anytime it rained hard. Shortly after purchasing the Big Deal, I heard from Michael at Guttersmith. We quickly arranged for a time for him to come out and give me an estimate on the work I wanted done and additional work that I'm planning to do in the future. He emailed me an estimate later that same day. I then told him what I wanted done. About a week later (when the weather was cooperative), the project was done. Overall, I found Michael and his crew to be professional, punctual, and responsive. I would not hesitate to use them again.
Description of Work: Install leaf screens on a portion of my home's gutters. Also unclogged/repaired a gutter that hadn't been working properly.
