The grass seed germinated and grew for a month or so, but never filled in like a lawn should. In late July, the lawn showed signs of failure with dead grass in numerous swaths and weeds were taking over, though I continued to follow the "maintenance" plan I was given by him. Bert came over several times to look at the lawn, but apparently had no idea why it was failing because he was unable to stop the decline. He went from solicitous to rude and defensive the moment the problem was presented to him. He stopped being responsive altogether as the lawn worsened. The last time he came over to discuss it was after I had called 5 times, visited the CCL store 4 times and wrote to Bert once on his website email address over the course of several weeks. During his last visit, he was rude, condescending, unprofessional and dismissive. He made weak promises to fix it, but in the end, did nothing, nor did he refund my money (not that I asked, even though his website boasted a "100% customer satisfaction guarantee" at that time). I believe he was simply unable to determine the cause of the failure and, therefore, abandoned the project. The lawn was a complete failure by September and literally looked worse than before he started the project. I have never dealt with anyone as unprofessional, rude and lacking in customer relations as Bert Saal. I feel as though he stole $1800 from me, not to mention the stress of dealing with such an unprofessional businessman and looking at a miserably failed project on a daily basis. There is a happy ending, though: The following year I hired the very friendly and professional Steinmetz Landscaping to put in a new lawn for less than the price CCL charged, and I have been enjoying the beauty of it ever since.
Description of Work: I hired CCL Gardens to put in a small lawn for me in mid-June. The owner, Bert Saal, was my point of contact. He promised I would be mowing my lawn "by the 4th of July". A CCL crew came over and tore off the top layer of the existing lawn, leveled it, added 4 inches of top soil, seeded it and laid straw over the top. I was instructed to water it for about 40 minutes daily and told to call with any questions. I paid in full upon receipt of the invoice, which was about $1800.

b.Bert was responsive and handled things on time but I felt that the product did not equal the cost. I was told that they would level the existing lawn (which the did), put down a layer of top soil and seed. The top soil turned out to mostly sand an ended up being washed away with the rain and with watering the lawn. Maybe partially my fault for not actually seeing what he considered to be top soil prior to him spreading it. Also I was not here when they did the jo I did end up getting some grass to grow but certainly NOT a $2500 lawn.

CCL Customer Choice Landscaping makes lots of promises--but does not follow through with any of them. If you do hire them, DO make sure you are their to oversee your project. DO NOT rely on the owner--he is a big talker! I have no doubt, that he CAN do GOOD WORK--I have seen some of the work done by his company, but he does not oversee the projects like he promises. Maybe he is taking on too many jobs than he can handle. Perhaps, we lived too far away, for him to keep checking the progress, but if he did not want the job, he should not have agreed to take the job! And if someone ASSURES YOU THAT HE WILL BE THERE "EVERY STEP OF THE WAY" and goes on to state, that if the job isn't done right it is his reputation on the line...Well Bert, I hope you read this, and realize you make your own reputation! We did not give it to you. My husband and I are very easy to get along with people, but we expect a company to be honest and the job to be done right! It has been a year now, and you took our money and did not perform as promised. So, this is what you get from us in return! Beware of CCL!!!!!
Description of Work: Customer Choice Landscaping was hired to put in a lawn and driveway in at our new house. We had not moved in yet and lived quite far away, so we TRUSTED "Bert" the owner, with the job. He turned out to be a "big talker" and ended up disappointing us to say the least! We had told him we needed to trust him to do the very best job possible, as we could only be there on weekends. He, in turn, assured us that he would oversee the entire project first hand being at our home every step of the way! This did not happen! He dragged his feet for months to get our lawn in before the snow. Finally completing the job the beginning of November! He actually subcontracted the cement garage apron (without our knowledge} to a couple of guys, who obviously did not know what they werre doing. We did meet with Bert the weekend before the cement work was to be done, and at that time, we again asked if he (Bert ) would be present, and he said, "certainly"! I had also offered to cover anything with plastic sheeting before we left for the week--he replied, "Not necesssary--my guys do excellent work and are very neat The guys who did our job, did sloppy work! We had cement splattered all over our new house. Cement all over the siding, the service door as well as both garage doors! No attempt was made to clean up before they left. When we complained about it, Bert's reply was, well we usually have the garage doors open before we pour new cement but you weren't home! He said he would come out with the cement guys to "fix" the problem. We had to go back to work out of town and hoped it would be taken care of by the following weekend. Well, he sent the cement guys out, did not come himself, as promised, and the idiots used muratic acid to "try" to remove the cement from the doors and took the paint off to bare steel. It is now the 2nd week in November--too cold to repaint brand new garage doors! At our insistence, Bert replaced the 2 damaged panels. I managed to clean the cement off the service door--took me over an hour! Unfortunately, a year later, the house siding is still all splattered with cement! Sidewalk doesn't come close to being level, I won't even go into the stone steps fiasco!! The black dirt fill that was supposed to be clean and screened was full of broken glass! Bert had said he would "personally go out and choose the fill dirt to make sure it was 'top quality' before it was delivered"--yeah RIGHT!!!! And the driveway washed out from the rain this Spring and when we complained he stated, (he) "was 'more than fair with us' replacing our 2 garage panels..." REALLY???!!! He never came out to even look at the driveway...All CCL's contracts state "all work guaranteed for one year" Good luck with that! Do not do business with this company!!!
