An appointment was made, and it was explained that these are 2 story buildings. The representative showed up with a 6-8 foot ladder so could not go onto the roof. The representative stated someone would be out during the week and no one needed to be available. No one came. Another call. Another promise. Called again 2 weeks later and office personnel stated there was a request for a quote in their system and they would be out. That was August, 2016 No one ever came out. Guess they don't need the business. Totally unprofessional!

I provided a 3D drawing and a material list with a quote from Marling Lumber. Scheduled an appointment for three weeks later and called to confirm the day before leaving my phone number. Although I took my time to attend the meeting Scott sent an email a few hours earlier saying he did not want to waste my time and did not want the work. Isn't 3 weeks later wasting my time?

In the time from your initial contact to the was so long, and then, a waste of your time. There were some staffing changes on our end that were the whole reason for the end result. The email from Scott wasn't meant to disregard the time you already spent waiting for your appointment, we strictly didn't want to make you wait any longer and waste (more) of your time. Our sincerest apologies for the timing on our part.

They provided a comprehensive report detailing the damage with pictures. Sent this to the insurance company. Due to other reasons ended up going with another roofer to do the job. The damage report was free. They did not provide an estimate but said they would be able to do it at the insurance cost.

Great. They subcontracted some work, applied coupons form Angie's list toward that work and their own work, supervised and checked up on work, did a great job with small finishing details like finding matching roof shingles to patch around new venting, and stayed in close communication throughout. All employees wee professional, courteous, and competent.
Description of Work: Thorough analysis of moisture problems. Frey did a great job analyzing the issues, provided energy analysis to determine leaks, replaced bathroom fans, improved venting for fans, removed mold in attic where moisture had formed due to poor insulation/ venting, installed attic insulation- blown and foam sealed around openings and any fixtures jutting into attic, removed siding on north wall to put on Tyvek wrap that was missing, sealed and insulated second floor overhang.

We did not use them for our project because their estimate was almost double our budget. More than what the house was valued at.
Description of Work: Contacted them to give us an estimate. Told them our max was 50,000 and we were told our project done for that. When the plan was given to us, it was over 90,000. Problem was mostly due to excessively high priced items in the plan. Also, the electrician did not show up for a walk through to estimate our needs. Instead, he gave an estimate based on a rough floor plan. He included work that was not needed or was already in our home. For example, adding 2 outlets to a 3 foot wall. The wall already had one outlet, two would be over kill. Other items not needed. Bottom line, very friendly and showroom has beautiful items. But, this company is only for people who have an unlimited budget

We are sorry we all spent the time putting together a project that was out side your budget. This is why we spend so much time in the design process to make sure everyone knows what they are getting and what it would cost. Everything was presented to you in an open book fashion so you can pick and choose and get to a price range that fits the scope of work. Some times it is better to not do a project than to hope and wish you can do something with an unrealistic budget. Lots of contractors would have told you they could and then surprised you with tons of change orders and drove the price up. We wouldn't do that to you. Best of luck to you with your remodel project.

From the beginning when Greg started working with me on my remodeling project, he demonstrated flexibility in the evolution of the project. Through discussions we came up with a plan that would meet my needs. I decided to replace ugly parts of the exterior of my house, like old uninsulated doors with peeling paint and wooden siding that was peeling and looking pretty bad. Every day the crew arrived at the appointed time and the foreman J.J. discussed all the details that needed special attention. There were many little details involved in replacing the old exterior and updating everything. The crew were all conscientious and did outstanding work. One of the doors they replaced was an old garage door that was narrow and short. They had to cut concrete by the base of the door and reframe the top and sides to make the new door fit. The concrete at the base of the door was repaired to put it at the correct height so we don't trip on the threshold, something I hadn't even thought of. The back door was also replaced. Before installing siding, the crew removed old wooden siding, using the correct procedures for dealing with lead paint. The windows had previously been replaced and wrapped, but needed to be re-wrapped after accounting for 2 inches of insulating foam. J.J. was great about asking my preferences on details like the style of the window trim and positioning. He added insulation and support materials where they were needed, dealing with all the peculiarities of an older house - and there were quite a few! The electrical outlets were updated. The exterior faucets had to be adjusted to deal with the added insulation; they were replaced with nice anti-siphon faucets. J.J. asked if we wanted to update exterior details like the house lights, door bells, mailbox, house number, etc. I had not thought of this, but it adds so much to the house to have the entire exterior updated. It's beautiful. It's been a pleasure to work with the Frey Construction crew throughout this process. Their attention to detail and quality make me really happy that I chose to go with this company.

Frey Constructions bid came in higher than a few other people we spoke to, and here is why we went with them and I'm glad we did. First, two people came out to do the estimate and they did a fabulous job taking their time and even ended up on the roof to check out at water issue. An issue no one else seemed to notice. I didn't ask them to look into it, they just observed this. I had noticed the same issue a few years before and they got to the bottom of it. I was so happy they took the time to do the estimate and the job done right. The only thing I didn't like in the estimate process was at one point after presenting the many ways Frey is a great company, she said, "Is there any reason you wouldn't use Frey?" The only thing that should be said at that point is, "Do you have any questions?" or something similar. My husband was home and in a another room and it sounded too much like a "What can I do to get you into this car today?" He didn't think they were trustworthy, but he didn't hear their presentation. I had done A LOT of online research and this was the only company that knew what they were doing and WHY. That is important, the why. How stuff works, how to keep the warranty for HardiPlank and how to prevent water issues. So yeah, we spent 10,000 more than with two other estimates, but we got a much more thorough process and I know it was done right. They understood R values and condensation zones. As did I. They showed up to start the project when they said they would. I knew exactly who to call. There is a lead on the project and he gave me his card and said to call anytime with questions. He was here every day. I was consulted daily on progress. They went above and beyond and replaced things like outgoing vent covers that made everything look polished. As problems arose (as they always do in projects) I never felt like they couldn't handle it and there were no hidden costs. A few times something different had to be done and there was a written addendum to the contract that we both signed and no surprises at all. They are by the book too with things like lead testing. They were doing what everyone is suppose to be doing, but often fudge and don't. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.

The carpentry holding the garage door was falling down and they came in and reattached the falling pieces. They did a good job there. They were punctual and fine. He replaced some of the trim on the garage door. When he first put the trim on, he wasn't happy with the way it looked so he said he was going to do another piece. He made sure it looked good and was fitting quite right.

The work was all fine--the soffit panels were removed and reinstalled in fine fashion, and the spray foam part of the job seems to have been done well, too. We are looking forward to warmer floors in our bedrooms this winter. I bear the responsibility of not doing my homework. I think I paid a premium (too much) for what turned out to be general contractor services. A Frey employee removed the soffit panels and reinstalled them, but otherwise the project was done by a non-Frey subcontractor. If I had to to do it over again, I would have looked into contacting a spray-foam insulation contractor directly. There was foam overspray (speckles) left on my siding, brickwork, and deck and some roofing nails driven into my deck railing--left after the work was done. Not a lot, but, more than I wanted to clean up, given the price I had paid for the project. It took about four calls to Frey over a two week period to get someone to return my calls and set up a time to come look at the needed overspray / nails cleanup. That was disappointing, since one of Frey's selling points is their follow-through; their visits to the job sites to check on project completion and customer satisfaction; their project management. The bill for the project was in my mailbox two days after the foam was sprayed, but no one could return my calls. Not the end of the world, but, again, disappointing for what you think you've paid for. The cleanup was done, at least enough that I didn't mind doing the last few specks myself. I don't like the nail holes in my deck railing, but, I can fill those and reseal over them in less time than it would take to ask them to come back and fix them. The initial estimate was about double, because they had automatically included replacing the soffit panels and related aluminum trim/cladding with brand-new. When I questioned why they needed to replace what I thought was perfectly good siding, they removed that part of the project from the quote and said they aren't always able to remove the pieces without damaging them. I asked that they try, and it worked fine. That, to me, was a little off-putting, like the project was being padded. But I understand that could be standard practice--replace rather than re-use. But, again, I didn't do my homework, should have done more research, should have gotten more quotes and second opinions, so I accept responsibility for choosing Frey to do this project and accepting their quoted price for doing it. That said, my experience was a letdown, given the price paid, all the other great reviews I see, and their local reputation.
Description of Work: Installed spray foam insulation in a sofitt where our second story overhangs the first. On one side of our house, about 2 feet of the second story (our bedrooms) overhang the first story. The bedroom floors above this overhang were very cold. The soffit/overhang was originally insulated with sheet styrofoam and fiberglass batting that had, over time, developed gaps and air leaks.

They had to cancel the first time due to rain but rescheduled promptly and did the repair well before the deadline for closing. They gave us the option of going through the roof or through the attic and it was best to go through the roof. They replaced the shingles with new ones and took pictures of the finished product using a ruler to measure to assure the buyers that it was within code. They were very accomodating.

The ice dam prevention was not 100% effective (they didn't promise that it would be) but is MUCH better than it used to be. As a result of the spray foam insulation however, the ceiling of my living room started having the nails pop. I called Scott Frey, the owner about it and he came over to see for himself. He agreed that this must have resulted from the spray foam and had a drywaller at my house within a week. The work to repair it took two days and the work is so good I wouldn't know they had been there. The drywaller was efficient, professional and polite.

They showed up when expected and most of the work was done professionally with the exception of the wood finishing around the tile floor. We didn't have them do the plumbing since their estimate was around $3000 and we had it done by our local plumber for less than $500 (and that included the price of the new toilet). Frey couldn't find a toilet small enough for the space we had and our local plumber was able to find it. They are very nice and polite and the quality of the materials was excellent. Exactly what we expected. In future we will probably hire individual local professionals instead of paying a premium price to have them get it all together.

Update - Scott Frey contacted me after reading this review. He immediately offered to bring me the report, refund my money, and arrange for an estimate if I was still interested. He came to my house with the report and my refund, and even brought flowers. He took the time to go through the report with me and explain the work that needs to be done. I'm impressed with his responsiveness and will consider Frey for our upcoming roof replacement. He is coaching his employees to make sure this doesn't happen again. I had Frey out to repair a couple of shingles on my roof and to provide a condition report, including pictures. The estimated price was $381, half was due before they would schedule the service, the other have due (and paid) the day of service. The repair man showed up on a day I didn't expect him, but it was okay because I happened to be home. I was told at the time of repair that my roof needed to be replaced before winter, there was serious failure, and it was in very bad condition. He said he would send the report out as soon as he could. I have waited months now, contacted them three times via email, asking for my report. The repairs and photos took less than two hours and I supplied the materials. The price of $381 is outrageous, especially considering I have not received the report. Not only that, I was told they would followup with an estimate, which again has not been done. I feel I was taken. Two other roofing companies that came out to provide estimates (after Frey didn't ever get back to me) said that 1. I did not need a roof replacement and 2. next time to call them, they will do the repairs for $100-200. I would still like to receive the report I paid for. I'm really disappointed since Frey is known to be overpriced, but I've always heard they give good service.

My house is over 100 years old and the windows were in really bad shape. We decided to replace the majority of them this year to help with energy costs and to eliminate the hazard with some exposed chipping lead paint between the windows and the storm windows. It is nice to be able to open one's windows! The sales person who came to give the estimate was professional and knowledgeable. She was a little bit pushy about wanting an immediate decision, but what salesperson isn't? The fact is, she spent a lot of time talking with us and answering questions. She was quite nice and patient with changes to the scope of work. We did get other quotes and Frey was a bit more expensive, but they had a better selection of window styles and they have a crew on staff rather than using subcontracted labor. I had to call a couple times to schedule the final window measurements. They were busy and I am a bit out of the way, so that didn't bother me. The workmen were punctual and professional. The two gentlemen outside followed EPA guidelines for lead removal. There is not one bit of construction debris in my yard and the installation is gorgeous. The aluminum trim they made to wrap the exposed wood is seamless with the exterior trim framing the window. Stunning workmanship. They went above and beyond and fixed some falling down soffit on the attic dormer while they were here. The one workman inside followed procedure, but didn't do a great job of cleaning up after the work. He left dust (likely comprised of mostly plaster from around the window) on the windowsills, baseboard, and floor. I would have gone through and thoroughly cleaned anyway to ensure any potential lead bearing dust was cleaned up, but I was a bit unhappy with the amount of dust that remained. It wasn't a deal-breaker, though. Like I said, as a homeowner and parent, I would have cleaned again even if it was spotless. I spoke with the supervisor about it, and he was glad I told him and took the note back to the company. I will hire them again next year to continue replacing the remaining original windows. Overall, they did a lovely job and are pleasant and patient. Beautiful work.

The roofer showed up on time and ready to work. He got the aluminum pressed and cut. He worked a good portion of the day, showing me the improvements as he installed them by taking pictures on his cell phone. He cleaned up the area, taking all the debris away. I didn't even find any extra nails on the ground. My experience with the project planner and the roofer makes me want to use this firm again. They sent out an interior decorator and a construction engineer to look at the project. The engineer mentioned that the layout of our house (a two car garage with a family room behind it) would require all new roofing trusses on both the garage and the family room. Which would require them to remove this whole roof portion. All I wanted to do was remove the attic above the family room and get a vaulted ceiling. They told me next that they would not even get me a formal quote until the inspection was approved and therefore wanted me to pay upfront for the inspection. I pushed for a quote and the owner ended up calling me. He wanted me to pay upfront for an inspector to come out before he would even come to do the formal quote. This made me really uneasy. I told him that I was just trying to get a general idea before deciding about the project. He just threw a number out, instead. Another company came out and did a quote, which included the cost of having an inspector come out prior to the project beginning; this was a much better business policy for providing quotes and I ended up working with the company who was upfront during the quote process. I was disappointed because they were highly rated on Angie's List and I was ready to get the work done. I wish he would have had a better attitude about getting me a quote because I was serious about getting the project done.

At that time, we can give you a ballpark idea of what the project would cost. From there, we take it one step further with our clients so that they don’t get a ballpark quote and then have surprises at the end. The extra step is our Design Agreement so that we can give you a quote down to the very last penny. We don’t charge much for this service, but we do provide build-able drawings and accurate pricing. With us, there are no surprises as we provide itemized, a la carte proposal with complete drawings. We charge for this service to keep overhead down for our clients that do work with us. We are sorry that you were disappointed in how our design process is set up. If you would have worked with us, we know that you would have been happy like the rest of our clients. We will be the first to admit that we may not be the cheapest contractor out there, but we can guarantee that we are the best value with our services, warranties and quality of work. We are very glad you found someone to help you with your project. Hopefully with your next home improvement project, you will give Frey Construction another shot. Best of luck to you!

The experience with Frey Construction was phenomonal. Scott Frey was extremely accomodating to my situation. I first contacted them in October of 2012 to replace a roof on our condo building and Scott went above and beyond helping us 4 owners deal with insurance company and financial support. I also hired Frey to do personal work for me at the same condo, replacing decks, stairs to my unit and a new patio door. I was unable to be at my condo for I live in another area and Scott and his team were honest, on time and did quality work. They worked well with my current renter and were courteous to them. I would recommend Frey Construction to anyone who wants a honest, good work ethic contractor (and the price was very reasonable too). Thank you Scott, awesome work!!!
