This is a very tough grade to decide on. I've had experience with concrete providers in the past and it's rarely been 100% good. It must be a tough business to be in. Generally, they all seem either good at laying concrete or good at running a business -- rarely is it both. My primary requirement was to find someone that did a high quality job at a reasonable price. Concrete is just one of those things that HAS to be done right the first time. My new house completed construction in March, 2015. Before it was even done, I poured through reviews on Angies List and came up with 3 possible providers that all had received good grades in the past. I called each of the contractors and received quotes over the winter/spring of 2015. Each was relatively responsive when it came to providing a quote. The contractor that I was most comfortable with, Dahlgren, provided a quote that was over 20% more than the next 2. That ruled that particular contractor out. The final decision was between Wendt and Nygren. Pricing was very similar and their explanation of their process and suppliers was similar. When it came down to the final decision, I chose Wendt mostly out of gut feel. I just trusted him right off the bat. I'll start with the good. Matt is a nice guy and extremely thorough. He does very high quality work. I talked with him a couple of times while he was setting up or inspecting a pour. I was impressed with his knowledge and how many times he would measure the same exact thing to ensure it was correct. I learned a lot about concrete from the man. Now that my driveway is in, I'm extremely happy. I had a very screwy driveway (due to rules imposed by the local dictatorship). He worked around it. There were many challenges along the way and each time, he would find a very acceptable solution. Bottom line: If you want the job done well and at a reasonable price, he is definitely worth exploring. For those that had the same criteria as me, you can stop reading now. It wasn't all sunshine and kittens. While the end result is most important, I could not, in good conscience, give Matt a straight out A. Pre-job communication and scheduling were horrible. As I mentioned earlier, I had Matt out in February to provide a quote. he delivered that in a reasonable timeframe and followed it up with a call a few weeks later, while I was still making my decision. That was all good. However, when I made my decision and provided him the signed contract, we agreed that he would tentatively schedule me for the end of June -- that was sometime around March/April, I believe. Seemed like I was pretty safe scheduling for a couple of months out and had beaten the spring rush. I didn't hear from Matt for quite awhile. I figured he'd give me a call once he was a couple of weeks out. Mid-June came and there was silence. I decided to give him a call. He explained that he was running behind and had some personal commitments that were also consuming a healthy portion of his time. All of this was understandable and I wasn't in a rush, I just wanted to plan appropriately. The end of June came and went and I did not hear a thing. I called Matt again. At this point, it was generally taking him about a week to return my call. I was beginning to worry that he was either going out of business or just wasn't interested anymore. When he got back to me, he told me it would be about 2 weeks before he'd get out. I know this was a few weeks past my original scheduled timeframe but again, I was in no rush, just wanted to make sure I didn't have to restart the process and find a new contractor (good luck getting a concrete contractor in the middle of summer). July passed. Then August was well underway. I would call every couple of weeks and I was told they would be getting started in a couple more weeks. This may have only happened 2 or 3 times but it was enough that it seemed like it was going to go on forever. Ultimately, it threatened to impact the landscaping I had scheduled for early September. Who knew that 2 months was not enough cushion to build in. Finally, in late August, his crew showed up to my house to prep for the driveway. There were a couple of guys and they put in a few hours of work and left. They showed up a couple of days later and repeated. Finally, Matt showed up on the 3rd visit and fixed everything his crew had done. Apparently, there were issues with his crew. In the end, Matt and a young kid (teenager?) knocked the whole thing out. I think this might have been a blessing because it was obvious he made sure things were done right. When it's all said and done, it was completed at the very end of August and it took 3 pours. Might have even gone into the first day of September. Again, I can't repeat enough what a good job he did. It's just the other stuff that was frustrating. Since the quality of the work was the most important thing to me, I'm satisfied. I would probably use him again but only if I didn't have a tight schedule.
Description of Work: Wendt's put in a new concrete sidewalk, driveway and approach. Also replaced a cracked piece of sidewalk and poured a small slab in front of a patio door.

I struggle somewhat with how to write this review. There were parts of this process that were extremely frustrating. But in the end, I remind myself that it is about the quality of the work. And the work was excellent. Our new driveway is beautiful. The quality of the workmanship cannot be paralleled and we have literally had friends and neighbors standing at the edge of our drive commenting on what a great job it is. So that's the important thing. Matt does excellent work. We did hit a few snags along the way that I think are worth mentioning. Once the job started, the communication was great. But the communication during the bidding and scheduling process was not great. We had to email or call several times to figure out what the status of our job was. If we had not been so impressed with Matt during the bidding process, we might have gone with another company out of sheer frustration waiting for clear communication. Our final cost was about 20% higher than our initial bid. It turns out that our original driveway was poured directly on clay with no existing base. Matt ended up having to dig deeper and bring in fill. That was unexpected. There was no way to foresee this and we were understanding about the increased cost and extended work time here. During the excavation, the electrical line to our garage was severed and had to be repaired. While what we were charged for this repair was certainly less than if we had to hire out the work ourselves, I question whether that cost should have been our responsibility to begin with. As I said, in the end, it's about the quality of the work and my husband and I (and our neighbors) are all in agreement that this was an excellent job.
Description of Work: We had our old concrete driveway completely ripped out and a new one poured.

From beginning to end, we were extremely happy with the workmanship and professionalism of Matt and his crew. They were on time, they completed the work, cleaned everything up, and were pleasant to talk with. They went up and beyond what we had hoped for. After they laid the cement, it started to rain, but they stayed on the job site, covered up the newly laid concrete, and when the rain passed, they redid what needed to be done and finished the job. We would rehire Wendt's in an heartbeat. Wonderful outcome.....fabulous job. Thank you Matt and your crew.
Description of Work: We had several sections of our driveway that had cracked and were sunken in. They removed the sections, and laid new concrete.

Matt and his crew were very good to work with. They were punctual and professional. Their work was done well, and they took care not to damage the surrounding area of the driveway while working on the portion to be replaced. It was done when he said it would be, and they cleaned up after themselves. Matt gave clear instructions on how to maintain the new concrete as well as the existing concrete. They clearly know their business. I would hire him again for any concrete/masonry work.

We had a 25 year old brick sidewalk that needed to be replaced. We contacted Wendt's for an estimate. He was very thorough in the description of what was to be done and the time frame for the work. Our driveway is curved, narrow and surrounded by trees. We were very concerned of possible damage from a large cement delivery truck. He utilized a smaller type of motorized hauler to bring the concrete from the street to the work site to be sure there was no damage. The work date was delayed only one day due to heavy rain. The workmanship was excellent. The concrete walkway turned out beautiful--he maintained the curved appearance and used a picture frame effect around the joints. He even sealed the concrete, (which was not initially included on the estimate). We were very pleased. We would definitely use this company for any future work.

Matt was great and we would hire him again. He is easy to speak with, gives you direct and honest answers that are easy to follow, and volunteers many additional tips and suggestions. We felt his workmanship showed that he took time to do the job right and cared about things being flush, straight, and color-matched. Our porch light will look good. He even took the time to use some leftover mortar to repair some header joints around the house that we had earlier asked him to quote. What a nice surprise! If we have additional masonry projects, we will certainly be calling him again. It was a good experience.
Description of Work: Matt Wendt negotiated a good price to repair a porch light electrical box that had gone bad over the many years. We needed him to take out the old box which was embedded into the brick exterior wall and mud in a new box with mortar that matched the existing mortar. We had also asked his advice about some gaps in some header joint blocks which are all around the perimeter of our home.

We met with him once but ended up going with somebody else. We really liked him and it was a very hard decision for us to choose between him and Polished Concrete. It would have been a saving if we had went with him but we ended up going with Polished because their concrete thickness is more, even though it cost more. We ended up going with Polished because they ha a lot more feedback on Angie's List, the competition was close. I would still consider him in the future for a project. He was very nice, and he also educated me a lot about the project and related issues.

Response from Wendt's Concrete & Masonry
Thank you for the review! Just to clarify, while I recommend 4.5 inches for standard driveways and 4 inches for patios and sidewalks, I do leave it up to the customer as to what thickness they want. The price would then be adjusted by the material & any additional labor to set up. Matt - Wendt's Concrete & Masonry

Project was delayed by weather, once started it went fine.
Description of Work: Replaced garage apron, removed, replaced and expanded patio. Matt wasn't the least expensive quote but I felt like his attention to detail and concern for the finished product was going to result in the best buy.

the job turned out to be much more work that anticipated and the weather was uncooperative, but Matt completed the job and did good work for a fair price. He was very responsive to all of our concerns. Matt was also very meticulous about detail and was on the job site himself most of the time, rather than deploying low paid uncaring workers to do it.
Description of Work: Matt removed and replaced a badly damaged front patio that was attached to our vintage home and repaired a stone wall that surrounded it.

They did a beautiful job and a difficult driveway. The service was very well. I have a much pitched driveway, so it is a very difficult driveway and the water doesn't drain off it. I still feel comfortable inside my driveway. It looks nice and still new, like it is recently done. The crew was very good. They answered all my questions. I was all the day with them. They were right there with me. I got a good price. It was between two companies that I had narrowed down to. They were here every day. My son does construction and he recommends them highly.
Description of Work: Wendt's Concrete & Masonry took off the driveway and poured the driveway. They made it wider.

We decided to use Wednt's for our driveway replacement project after seeing the quality of his work in our neighborhood. Matt Wendt and his crew completed the removal and replacement on time and at the price quoted. The work site was kept very clean and neat. There was minimal damage to the surrounding grass. The driveway finish and the detail of the work was outstanding. Matt communicated often, and kept us informed of the start date (weather affected the start). Once the job was started, the crew was on site every day, including Saturday, to meet the committed completion date. Matt is truly as master at his craft and does not settle for any less than perfection. I highly recommend his work.
Description of Work: Old 75 ft long concrete driveway was removed and was replaced. Total duration of project was 4 days.
