Excellent experience from start to finish. Mark was very knowledgeable and professional. Project was completed on time and within budget. The products used and craftsmanship exceeded our expectations. After a few months of use and reflection, we wouldn't have done anything differently and are completely satisfied with our new kitchen. We highly recommend D&G for any remodeling projects.
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel - removed shared wall and combined smaller dining room and kitchen. New floors, cabinets, quartz counters, and lighting. Added large island and pull out trash/recycling bins, spice rack, and utensil rack.

Overall did not go well and are still dealing with the poor quality of the build. Be sure to fully research your builder prior to making a choice. Also be sure to question what the standard inclusions actually are and do not make comparisons based on what is listed on a website. We felt less quality materials were used in order to maximize their profits. Despite notifying them of issues, little was done to remediate them even when sharing pictures and videos. Our "upgrade" hardwood floors have a defect (identified by two independent flooring professionals) which has caused them to crack and split throughout the home, improper drainage has cause water to seep into the basement damaging drywall, cracking in stone work and the use of extremely low quality drafty windows just to name a few and are still issues. Good luck with your future build and choose your builder wisely.

Recently, I wanted to do some updating in our kitchen and again turned to DG Remodelers for assistance. Countertops, lighting, paint and decorating turned out beautifully, I can't help but stand and stare. I was told at the beginning of the project that the countertops would take approximately 6 weeks from the date we placed the order. I was given periodic updates and when I had a question, I received a prompt response. When it comes to building or remodeling I can't say enough about the David & Goliath family!! Keep up the good work.
Description of Work: David & Goliath built two (2) beautiful homes for our family. We were only in our first home for five (5) years when we were approached by a couple who asked if we would be interested to sell. The exterior design got their attention and they immediately fell in love with the attention to detail in the interior. We contacted Dave about building a second home for us, this time we wanted a ranch, we had ideas from a number of different models we had seen and we worked with Dave, his rough carpenter foreman, and the designer to make our ideas work, and they did. Tim, the finish carpenter is a perfectionist. My husband is a cabinetmaker and is very attentive to details; he had no concern whatsoever with Tim doing the work, wood grains are matched and miters are perfect. The masons also did an excellent job, we have never had any issues with water or leakage in either of our basements. When we built our first house we had some pretty unrealistic expectations, it didn't seem that way at the time, but in looking back, we're lucky that Dave was willing to work with us a second time.

Home remodeling went well. Some ordering issues with cabinetry and tilers and project took longer than anticipated, but workers were able to complete in timely matter according to contract. All were great to work with and worked well with our schedule, even though we lived in home during remodeling. Even with our dog present, workers worked with her barking. Our kitchen gets compliments all the time. It if functional and beautiful. The master bathroom is beautiful with walk in tiled shower. Main bathroom is enjoyed by our family and is more functional with beauty. Northern home building went smoothly. We had the lot before plans to build and D&G was willing to come to northern WI to build. Broke ground in October and home was complete the following March. We ordered appliances from Milwaukee area and would not be delivered to construction site, but Dave picked up, delivered to northern WI (3.5 hrs away) and installed. We still get compliments on the home. The quality does not compare to other homes around us. We look forward to heading north to our great home there.
Description of Work: Remodeled kitchen, remodeled master, main and 1/2 bathrooms. Full configuration of kitchen with new cabinetry, new granite in kitchen and bathrooms and new tiling in all of the above to replace old flooring. New bath fixtures, tub surround, tile work in master bath. Refinished all hardwood floors. Also built our vacation home in northern WI approx. 3 years ago. 3 bdrm (one a master suite) 2 1/2 bath exposed ranch with open concept great room with rec room and finished lower walk out to lake.

We obtained four estimates for our project, and the quote from DG Remodeling (a division of David and Goliath Builders) was within the ballpark of the others. We had met with Dand G’s designer a few years ago when we were considering a different project. She had good ideas at that time, and came up with a nice design for our kitchen. We chose Dand G primarily because of the plan they presented and because we liked their designer. We always use Angie’s List as a resource, and were surprised to find only one review for DG Remodeling. It was a very short, negative review, having to do with an unreturned phone call. At the time, we didn’t think that was enough of a reason to eliminate them from consideration. We should’ve paid more attention to that review . . . good communication is not a strong point of this company. We signed our contract in late April. Unfortunately, ours was a project that had many problems, large and small. We started out immediately with some structural issues that added another several thousand dollars to the cost. We knew there would be “unknowns” behind walls and ceilings – we had both, and it brought our project to an impasse due to the additional expense. We relied on the recommendation of our local building inspector to get past this first setback. We made our selections on May 4th for all kitchen design components. We learned on July 2nd, almost two months later, that the countertop we chose was on backorder until August AND that the backsplash tile we chose was no longer available (it hadn’t been ordered until end of June). Very bad news to hear this late in the project. We decided to go with a different countertop suggested by our designer in hopes of preventing further delay. It obviously wasn’t our first choice but was fairly close in color. As it turned out, DG couldn’t get the stocked countertop installed any sooner than the backordered countertop. The backsplash tile was a fiasco, but we'll abbreviate. Our designer had done a great job of putting together color choices for us in May. The tile she chose really pulled everything together – it was a beautiful piece, we liked it very much. To find out in July that it was no longer available was a huge disappointment. Our designer had some alternate samples for us to look at, but they had nowhere near the quality or detail of the original choice. We now felt rushed to find a different tile. We called the manufacturer of our original choice directly to find out if they had surplus stock anywhere that we could buy, and were told that this particular tile had been discontinued over two years ago. We asked Dand G why we were shown a discontinued item, but never got an answer. We told our designer that we would also do some looking for a different tile, however, we felt as though we were doing the lion’s share of trying to find something else. We had to ask several times to find out what our tile allowance was so that we knew what price range we should be looking in when we were out searching. When we simply could not find the quality of tile in the price range we were given, we asked (several times) exactly where we should be shopping to find the right mix, but never got an answer to that question. One week before the tile setter was scheduled to come, our designer found something she thought would work. Again, it wasn’t our first choice but we were getting too near the tile install date and had to find something. The tile setter then had to be delayed a week because the new tile wasn’t available locally. Though they did beautiful work, Dand G subs came and went with little regard for given dates and times. Dand G is not proactive in controlling this “revolving door” and will not give you the courtesy of a heads-up when they know of a conflict. We understand there are a lot of moving parts to a remodeling job, but it would’ve been nice to know who would be in our home and when, and to be informed of any changes to that schedule. We had an on-going problem with an entry door that pretty much soured the rest of our project. We had requested the door to be installed as a side job. There was a misunderstanding because the door we received was not at all what we had in mind. We told our designer that we’d like to return the door and be refunded – we would find a door ourselves and have it installed. We were told that would be fine. We asked twice when we would be receiving our refund for the returned door. We didn’t get an answer initially. The second time we asked, our designer told us that normally the refund would be handled in the form of a credit at closing, and that she would have to ask the owner about issuing a refund check instead. Several weeks went by and we didn't hear anything back on this issue. Fast forward to a few days before our closing. We asked to see the final invoice, etc., to make sure everything was in order, including the door credit - since we never did receive a refund check, we wanted to make sure that credit was included in our closing documents. It was not. We called our designer to ask about it, and she replied that we wouldn’t be getting the credit because there were some additional building permits to be paid for. It seemed odd to us that there was a permit issue this late in the project and that we were just hearing about it a few days before our closing. We asked if we could get a copy of the permit and the receipt and were told “no” - this really wasn’t an acceptable response so we asked to have the owner of Dand G call us. We were told to leave a voicemail for him, which we did, but he never returned our call. It’s now the day before our closing and we’ve left messages that we’d like the door issue resolved before we close. No response. The morning of the closing, we still hadn’t heard anything back from anyone at Dand G. We left another voicemail for our designer that we would not be meeting them for the closing because we hadn’t heard back from anyone on the unresolved issue. No response. We also texted our designer to make sure she received our voicemail about the closing - no response to that, either. We’re trying to get a problem resolved, and our designer and the company owner have decided they’re not going to communicate with us - unbelievable, and extremely unprofessional. We also received a revised invoice from Dand G reflecting a higher final payment – no explanation, just a higher total. Change orders were missing. There was an unexplained credit which turned out to be a partial credit for the door. About an hour after our closing should’ve taken place, we received a voicemail from Dand G’s office manager, telling us that they’d like us to call to reschedule our closing, and that until the closing was completed, we were not to “use or occupy” the remodeled space otherwise our warranties might be voided . . . directly opposite of what our designer had told us about using our kitchen prior to closing. We weren’t comfortable with what we were seeing: Dand G's indifference on the door issue, the fluctuating final payment figure, and that the designer and owner became completely unresponsive as we were trying to settle our closing, so we retained an attorney to review our contract and closing documents. We sent the attorney’s findings to Dand G, whereupon Dand G revised our final invoice and gave us full credit for the door. We were able to close. We wish we could give a better review of DG Remodeling because our kitchen did turn out beautifully, but because of the bad note we ended on, we would not use them again. Some of the problems we ran into were out of anyone’s control but Dand G would’ve made a much better impression by resolving issues and answering questions promptly and directly, rather than ignoring or glossing over them. And that the company owner and their designer stopped communicating with us at the time of our closing was completely inexcusable.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen remodel that included: removal of wall between kitchen and dining room; new cabinets, oak flooring, and quartz countertops; relocation of entrance to basement stairway. Also created planning desk area under 2nd story staircase.

Response from David & Goliath Builders Inc
I am Sharon Volz, CKBR, and as the designer of this very beautiful kitchen, I would like to respond to [member name removed] post. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the homeowner and am very sorry the relationship ended the way it did. I had thought we had resolved every issue and am disappointed that six months after the kitchen’s completion, [member name removed] posted this review. The [member name removed] have an adorable house, but the kitchen didn’t reflect the home’s charm in any way. It was outdated and dysfunctional and had oversized soffits measuring over four feet wide. They wanted more than anything to have the soffits removed. We came up with a design and floor plan that fit the personality of the house perfectly. The [member name removed] were over the moon. We worked and re-worked the cabinet layout several times to be absolutely sure every inch of cabinetry provided space for all their appliances and the storage the [member name removed] required. We didn’t know for sure if the soffits could be eliminated until we opened the drywall, which was communicated to the [member name removed]. This is when we discovered structural problems. We presented the most economical solution to the [member name removed], but they did not want to pay to have the structural problem fixed. And they asked us to drywall over the problem and leave the soffits in place. As a licensed and responsible builder, we could not cover up a problem we discovered. [member name removed] grew frustrated and called the building inspector. The inspector agreed with our solution and we fixed the problem. Removing the soffits made a world of difference to the appearance of the kitchen and added to the storage capacity of the upper cabinets. I had used the same tile selected by the [member name removed] just a few months before on another remodeling project. At that time, our supplier still had the tile in stock and did not inform me it had been discontinued. When we found out it was no longer available, I went to all our suppliers and found a similar tile [member name removed] was happy with. The tile was more expensive, but DG Remodeling absorbed the additional cost. Backordered products frustrate everyone. Since the downturn in the building industry, manufacturers have limited the size of their inventories dramatically. This was the case with the quartz that was chosen for the countertop. I was notified by the countertop fabricator that this quartz product was on backorder and they could not honor our original countertop installation date. And in fact they could not give me an installation date until they could confirm receipt of the quartz. I looked for an alternative. I found an “in stock” quartz with similar characteristics to the original. [member name removed] liked the new option and approved the change because she didn't want to wait for the backordered quartz. By making this change, we were able to keep the original scheduled install date. The [member name removed] asked us to install a new garage to house door as a “side job.” As a professional Design-Build firm, we do not do side jobs. The guidelines of our profession are clear and we follow them to the letter of the law. We issued a change order for a “fiberglass fire door; painting to be completed by homeowner.” The change order was signed, paid for and the door was ordered. When the special order door was delivered, the [member name removed] refused it, saying they wanted a wood door. We can't return a special order door. The [member name removed] wanted a complete refund. I got the door supplier to take the door back with a restocking fee. So we could close the job and move forward we refunded the [member name removed] the total amount of the door without charging a restocking fee. Throughout the project, I called, emailed, and met with [member name removed] on a regular basis, including providing an updated schedule weekly. Our on site foreman talked to the [member name removed] daily and kept them informed of their project schedule. Near the close of the job, the [member name removed] mentioned bringing a lawyer into the mix because of the restocking fee on the special order door. At the direction of DG Remodeling’s attorney, I refrained from further communication to allow for the legal representatives to sort out the matter. The workmanship of our carpentry staff is outstanding and if I am ever able to photograph the [member name removed] beautiful kitchen, which I am sure is an award winning design, readers of this post would be able to see this project first hand. I wish the [member name removed] many years of happiness in their beautiful, charming kitchen.

Major dissapointment
Description of Work: I called to get a quote on my project; the designer was on vacation for a week so I told the other companies I needed more time for a decision to give them a chance to quote the job. Sharon called my when she got back and we made an appointment for Friday. She called me Thursday night to tell me that a conflict came up and to call back and re-schedule. I called her back Friday morning at 8 am and left a message saying I was disappointed that it was cancelled and please get back to me. I received a message to call her back but not at 10 (which our original appointment was set for 1030) because she had an appointment with the Mowen REP! What, my appointment got moved for a window rep! I inquired further and her response is that she had to keep the appointment because he was hard to get a hold of. She further said that maybe we should part ways!!!!! So if you are reading this please think twice before you call

Response from David & Goliath Builders Inc
My name is Sharon Volz, CKBR and a designer with DG Remodeling, and I would like to respond to [Member name removed] post. I had scheduled a morning meeting at [Member name removed] home to discuss a possible remodeling project. When a conflict arose in my schedule, I called [Member name removed] two days prior to our scheduled meeting. I got his voice mail and left a message about changing the time of our meeting. When he called back he left an abrasive, hostile message. He was outraged that I would ask to change the time of our appointment. I was taken aback by his verbal hostility, but being a professional, I still returned his call. He answered and proceeded to express his anger at my asking to reschedule our appointment. I had never met [Member name removed]. I only talked to him once on the phone. After his behavior, the prospect of meeting with [Member name removed] at his house, by myself gave me a very uneasy feeling. I suggested to him that we weren’t a good fit. A successful remodel requires good relationship between both parties. I knew this would not be possible with [Member name removed].
