After more than a month of on-again off-again work and payments totaling $6,250, we had no choice but to terminate our contract with 5 Fields Contracting. After the relationship was terminated, Mr. Fields contacted us and threatened to place a lien on our house. At this point we contacted our lawyer. He spoke with Mr. Fields and they verbally agreed that Mr. Fields would reimburse us $2,000 on a payment plan. Mr. Fields never signed the agreed upon contract or returned our lawyer?s phone calls. At this point, we had no other recourse but the court system, which we had hoped to avoid. We filed a lawsuit to recover the full cost of the kitchen remodel and our lawyer expenses. Mr. Fields did not appear in court and as a result, the judge put a lien on Mr. Fields property for the full amount of our kitchen, legal expenses and court costs. We do not believe Mr. Fields intentionally set out to deceive and cheat us. He did a decent job on simple shelving in our pantry but did not possess the finished carpentry skills to execute such a large job. It is our belief that he simply got in over his head.
Description of Work: On November 30, 2007, we hired Rodney Fields of 5 Fields Contracting to remodel our kitchen. We specified we were looking for a cabinet-maker and he assured us he possessed the proper qualifications. We agreed the custom cabinets and shelves would be built and stained off-site and installed in stages to allow use of the kitchen and would take no longer than 4-6 weeks. We paid Mr. Fields over $3,000 upfront for materials and the project was to begin mid-January. However, there were problems from the very beginning. Mr. Fields was not able to start the job at the agreed upon time due to a back injury. When the project did begin, Mr. Fields was unable to show up in a timely manner and would often be unavailable for days. When cabinet installation finally began, it was glaringly apparent that Mr. Fields had misrepresented himself as a cabinet-maker. The agreed upon cabinets were to be constructed of cherry veneer for the sides with solid cherry fronts. This included solid cherry doors and drawers in a style matching our existing pantry built-in. What were installed were poorly constructed cabinets of a variety of materials that did not match our existing cabinetry. There were large gaps, uneven finishes and sprung hinges. Many of the doors did not open and close properly and the drawers did not roll smoothly in their tracks. During installation, Mr. Fields continued to polyurethane the cabinets on site with an aerosol can. When confronted about the poor quality of the cabinets, Mr. Fields insisted that this was “quality craftsmanship”.

Rodney started working at our house when a painting job we were having done turned out to require carpentry as well. We like him and his work, and he returned at least 8 or 10 times over the next few weeks to do additional projects for us as they came up. He was always pleasant, showed up as agreed, had good ideas, did quality work, and was patient about redoing projects when we asked for changes. His charges were very reasonable for the amount of time he spent on our projects.
Description of Work: Rodney did a lot of projects for us in our new home, mostly carpentry. He replaced (and in one case fabricated) moldings, built a bit of fence to screen the trash cans, patched the roof and wall of the garage, freed up our old double-hung windows and replaced sash cords, installed shelves in closet, built a cover for a duct in the kitchen and stained it to match our cabinets, and much much more.
