Excellent. John was very responsive, took great care to match our existing cabinets in both color and design. The job was also completed early. I would highly recommend this company and will use them again when we move on to our next project.
Description of Work: I had several cabinets made to match some current cabinets for a partial kitchen remodel.

John was consistently professional, punctual and patient while dealing with a couple who struggled with what we actually wanted/needed. We had a fairly useless tiny under-stair closet in our kitchen that I had gutted and intended to turn into some sort of a pantry. After lacking inspirations for several years, we found John, who suggested a custom built cabinet piece to simply slide into the door opening rather than trying to fully utilize the entire under-stair area. We struggled for quite some time because we felt there had to be some cool way of using *all* the space of this former closet, and John was extremely patient as we tossed ideas back and forth for months. Ultimately, John's gut instinct was the right thing to do, so we let go of trying to use every inch of this extremely awkward space and started to design a custom cabinet together. John's patience continued to be appreciated as we kept trying to decide what we wanted to store where, which would affect how we wanted the drawers laid out. We ended up with a beautiful piece of cabinetry that provides ample shelved storage, multiple drawers for pots/pans (and a drawer within a drawer for lid storage) and cookware, a pullout butcher block that can hold up to some serious weight, and custom spice rack shelving on the inside of the upper cabinet doors. John perfectly matched up the aged stain on all of our existing kitchen cabinets, as well as the door design and drawer fronts so the new piece not only looks fantastic, it fits right in and feels perfectly in place! Along with building the cabinet for us, John also modified a couple of our existing base cabinets to allow for some vertical cutting board and baking sheet storage, and pull out storage for a heavy Kitchen Aid mixer. We would highly recommend John to anyone looking for custom cabinetry by a talented craftsman with a great attention to detail. He also has the patience of a Saint if you feel like you could sometimes be "high maintenance" :)
Description of Work: John designed some custom cabinetry to function as a pantry and fit into a former under-stairs closet.

John Phillips arrived promptly, was very professional, knowledgeable and had some wonderful ideas and suggestions. He spent a lot of time listening to what our vision was, our concerns regarding functionality of the cabinets, and he offered some ideas we had not even thought of, which we very much appreciated. John was also very respectful of our price range. John was a pleasure to deal with, and even though we decided not to go forward at this time, we definitely will be calling him once we decide to go forward with new cabinets for our kitchen. (Approximate Cost: $5000.00)
Description of Work: We met with John Phillips to discuss some new custom cabinets for the kitchen in our second home. John listened to our ideas and concerns, and he made additional suggestions which we found very helpful.

First of all John listened to my vision and my requirements; many contractors try to tell you what you should want. He coordinated all of the subcontractors and performed work to a high standard. Best thing I can say is he treated the project as though he was doing work for a friend.

Was getting quotes to build two new cabinets to match existing and reconfigure penisula area to accomodate a built in dishwasher. Experience was professional, although I get the sense that there is quite a bit of overhead with this company. The estimate was very high, almost three times the amount of other estimates I received.

On time, within budget and exemplary service.
Description of Work: Custom designed and built bathroom vanity, mirror and coordinating cabinets. Extra storage and design features, facilitated custom granite vanity top. Excellent craftsmanship, professionalism and service. John has additional resources to help complete jobs, is an outstanding craftsman and is a joy to work with. Custom, wood cabinets are not cheap, however there are obvious differences between hand crafted casegoods and factory built cabinets. The Cabinet Maker, has outstanding service, punctuality and skills. The cabinets are in range of other local custom makers.

Experience could not be better. The owner, John Phillips, was always on time and did the work in the approximate amount of time that he said he would. He came with an assistant, who was also very good, and both of them installed the new drawers and slides under John's direction. Clean up after the work was superior. I wiish that all contractors were as good as he was. The quality of the work was excellent. W/hen he came to make an estimate and again, when he came to do the work, there was NONE of the annoyking "window" of arrival like many contractors. ("between 8 and noon, etc.") He said he would be here at 9AM and he arrived at 8:55AM. I would not hire anyone but The Cabinet Maker LLC for any similar work in the future..

It is apparent that service is important to them. When we get to the larger kitchen project in our future we will definitely call him.
Description of Work: I left a message on Saturday and between then and Monday we changed our approach to the project and decided not to reface the cabinets. John called back Monday morning and was very helpful, professional and just a great guy. The others I called never returned my call the week before.

His name was John Phillips. He handled everything for the kitchen remodel down to the studs and rebuild. It was better than the box stores. The box stores have specific sizes for the cabinets and if they don't have the size we need, whatever they don't fit they put spacers in so we lose usable area. John designed the cabinets so there was no wasted space. All corners were used. All backs of cabinets were used. All underneath and over top doors which means the drawer areas were used. There was no wasted space. It was quite novel, and this is what some of the stores we talked to said they couldn't do. He was much more expensive because of this. He used renewable wood and he used no VOC stains and glues. He went with the forestry certification as much as his shop could. We found out that they have to segregate it out in many ways like we do a kosher kitchen, where the wood that we use that is American forestry certified cannot even be in a room that is not American certified to qualify for the stamp in the paperwork. He said he could not set up two full shops to do that and that it was the best that he could do. It was from our green point of view wonderful because again no one else could offer us that at that time. Hopefully things would have changed. I would put the caveat on what we need to get and exactly what things are going to cost before because every little thing adds to the price. It's not like while he is there, we add something else. That will be an extra cost. Everything has to be set up front. Many people doing remodels will see the person there as being helpful, and the person there is making money. It's a business transaction and he is not there to be helpful. He is there to make money. If this is stated upfront there are no surprises and there are no ifs. We enlarged the kitchen space. When we took out the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, we made it a huge open concept. We had 3 cooks who were working off a cutting board that was 2 feet square. Now we have 3 cooks who can stay in here and make full meals without touching each other. We lost the dining room in the process. We have a bar area we can eat at and our family tends to eat whenever we eat at the sofa, or in the office, or at the bar itself. In the past year I have begun to miss it because I like sitting around the table with my family. The countertops are silestone and I adore them. They wash off with soap and water. They have high heat tolerance between 500 and 600 degrees and are micro-resistant. The company was expensive up front and I knew that going into the project, but they were good. They were saying that no one expected that the wall we took out was the retaining wall for the entire back of the house. They couldn't figure it out. It was not obvious in any way until the wall began to come down. So we had to work around that at the last minute. The wall between the kitchen and the dining room was what held up the roof of the house at the back of the house. it was a load-bearing wall. There was a 26 foot beam running through the wall that held up the roof and they were expecting to take down the little piece of soffit because it looked like it did nothing except nothing. When they began to remove it they realized they couldn't do that. They had to replace the 26 feet by 3 inches thick by 12 inch high wall holding the roof up. They had engineers, architects, and carpenters in here to try and figure out how to do it otherwise we would have a huge pillar right in the center of our canter to hold up the roof. They finally had to do it but it was an extra $3000.00. I don't have an extra $3000.00 just casually lying around in a big jar. So that was an interesting creative bookkeeping measure we had to deal with there. If I had to remodel my bathroom, I would probably not go with him. I would rather go with someone who was bathroom specific. He is really cabinets and countertops and general contracting. My kitchen is fabulous. People walk in and their mouths fall open. They don't know what to look at. I give them the grand tour when they are just standing in place. It is fun and we have this huge kitchen that's wonderful. I paid for it out of my pocket. We have been saving and it was little pieces of this and bits of that and savings. I hope it improves the value of my house and I hope I don't have to live off macaroni for the rest of my life.
Description of Work: The private contractor did our complete kitchen remodel. He changed the plumbing and he took out a wall. He put in flooring, walls, ceiling, cabinets, countertops, appliances, and lighting. We have a dual fuel stove, both gas and electric, so he had to re-plumb the gas as well. He finished the job in July 2008.

Went very well. John was friendly, prompt, and had lots of great ideas. The work was delayed slightly because of flooding issues at his workshop. John promptly called with updates and kept us well informed of his time-frame as it evolved.

John's sense of professionalism and customer service is incredible. He sent me a mockup of what I said I wanted and when I saw it, I decided that I wanted my first and last name in lowercase letters. Instead of charging for a second mockup, he did it for free and with the utmost courtesy. My name badge was ready well in advance of when he estimated and it is perfect. I attend a lot of networking events and am complimented on it constantly.

John was recommended through friends/clients of mine and I called him to get a quote. After having other contractors over to the house who were in and out in just a few minutes, John took the time to really assess the situation and get a clear picture of what I was after. He asked a lot of questions and allowed me to ask them too. He took measurements and did the work exactly as promised, resulting in a modern kitchen feel. The work was done in the time that was promised and the attention paid to detail was exemplary. John gives options, but will share his opinion as well. After all, that is why we hire professionals.
Description of Work: Cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in the kitchen were custom made to update a kitchen. This included hand crafting the cabinets and installing them with all new hardware.
