It was pretty scary to hear the words, "structural defect," but the inspector felt the job could be completed with approximately 4 hours of work and Tim was willing to take it on and did not seem intimidated at all by the project. He called the inspector and they spoke about what needed to be done. The inspector commented to the buyer that he felt comfortable with Tim's assessment of what needed to be done. The realtor took pictures of the completed work, and everyone was very pleased. Tim jumped right on this assignment and rearranged his schedule, since he knew I wanted to close in a week. I was very happy and knowing someone like Tim is such a comfort to a homeowner. My realtor also took his name, because she said something is always coming up in the process of selling a home.
Description of Work: While I was in the process of selling my home, the home inspection found structural defects in my two car detached garage. Some of the support beams had been cut in years past, to install the garage door opener. The roof was sagging and there was a crack in the ridge beam. Tim Marek spoke with the inspector about what was needed, and took care of it for me. He installed collar ties to the roof rafters every six feet and added support to the cracked ridge board. He used hyraulic jacks to gradually raise the roof peak level to match the end gables.

They didn’t do the work for me. We had a family member do it. He was very nice. If I needed them to do something else, I would use them.

We chose to go with a different service provider, but we would consider calling 2nd Life again in the future.
Description of Work: We contacted several handymen in late April/early May 2011 to replace some wood trim around our garage doors and windows and to replace the service doors and two windows. I spoke with the owner of 2nd Life on a few occasions, and he was quite professional and easy to talk to. One of the people who works for him came out, and after doing some research on materials, called us a few days later with an estimate. While the estimate seemed reasonable, we chose a different handyman who was also well-rated and quoted us a lower cost.

Hiring 2nd Life Home Repair and Remodeling was the best decision we could have made. We own an 8-family apartment building. All of the bathrooms needed upgrading—new flooring, tub surrounds, vanities, some drywall, etc. We found 2nd Life on Angie’s list and asked Tim to come over to bid on the 4 bathrooms that needed it the most. He was very thorough and asked questions to verify exactly what it was we were asking him to do. His bid was very reasonable. He set a schedule to begin and also a timeline for completing the work in phases so as to not inconvenience our tenants. During the course of the upgrade he discovered things that needed to be replaced before he could go any further and notified us before going ahead and incurring the cost. Despite that, everything was still completed on time. We were so pleased with the work that we asked him to come back and do the other 4 bathrooms. We highly recommend 2nd Life Home Repair and Remodeling and we will definitely be repeat customers if we need any additional work done.

Tim did a wonderful job with our home repair. We are very satisfied with the work that he did. He was very professional throughout the entire project. We would definitely hire him again.
Description of Work: We have had ongoing issues with our upstairs shower (shower only, no tub). We attempted some repairs ourselves, but were unable to fix the problems. Tim replaced our upstairs shower surround and fixed the leak in the drain, which had caused damage to our downstairs ceiling. He also fixed the pocket door on that bathroom. The wheels had come off so that the door was very hard to use. He patched the ceiling downstairs as well.

I found him very friendly and helpful. I liked his job.
Description of Work: He put tile around a glass block window. He took some old tile that I had and was able to match the old tile that was on the wall. He did a really nice job of using the tile that I had and replacing it. When he first came and gave me the estimate, the hinge on one of my mirrors wasn't working and he worked and fixed it on his estimate.

Tim came over and we liked him a lot more than the person from another company that had come out to give a quote a few days before him. Tim's quote was reasonable and we were ready to hire him. Unfortunately, after a delay in getting the quote to us (which we were originally OK with due to the timing of his visit and the holidays), the communication was a little rough. There was a delay in returning calls which caused our comfort level with him to drop. We thought, "if he's not returning calls now, what happens when the bathroom is torn up and we're trying to get a hold of him." (We've had that happen with another contractor in the past after we ignored the same gut-feel). So, instead of hiring him this time, we've decided to look elsewhere. As I stated earlier, we liked Tim and he really seemed to know his business, so maybe our paths will cross again on a future project.
Description of Work: Had Tim over to quote a tear-out and replacement of all bathroom fixtures (pedestal sink to vanity, new toilet, new tub & surround, and some new plumbing).

One of the workers forgot to finish up a few minor details, but he came back promptly (and apologetically) and took care of them. The owner, Tim Marek, came out with his supervisor to do the estimate and came again after the work was finished to check that everything was satisfactory. Tim was very accommodating when a sudden change in circumstances meant that the work schedule had to be pushed up, and got everything done by the new deadline. I was pleased with the results.
Description of Work: Did a number of jobs at the same time, using various workers with different specialties: repaired a leaking toilet upstairs, replaced the rotten wood floor under it, repaired/ drywalled the ceiling and wall (and textured it to match the other walls) in the downstairs bathroom that were damaged by the leak above (which included removing and reinstalling the sink), replaced tile-look panelling on the lower half of the bathroom walls, replaced vinyl flooring in two bathrooms, refinished a bathtub and a kitchen sink, restretched a carpet, installed a 50’ chain link fence, replaced the doorbell which required rewiring, did some small carpentry and concrete repairs.

Called for an appointment to provide an estimate. Tim returned the call promptly and set up a date/time convenient for us. Tim was very prompt. We described what we wanted done and Tim provided us with an estimate and time it would take for the job. We scheduled a date/time for him to come back and do the work. On the day of the appointment, Tim called to let us know he was available earlier if we were available. He arrived within 20 minutes of the call. Tim did an excellent job replacing the disposal. He cleaned up after the work was completed. We were very satisfied with the whole experience. The cost was spot on with the estimate we provided. I would gladly have him back again if we have any additional work to be done. I would also recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Replace garbage disposal in kitchen sink and at the same time had him move the disposal to the other side of a double sink.

We are putting our house on the market and needed to update our master bath fast! Tim responded to my request and came out immediately to look over the project. He started right when he said he would and finished right on time. The tile in the bathroom shower was pretty stubborn and Tim got it all out and stayed late to keep on the timeline. He leveled the floor and installed the floor. He brought us several samples to look at and everything he picked out looks great. We had a problem with the vanity drawers and he sawed off the ends to make them fit the space! He always explained everything he was doing and was very professional. I would highly recommend Tim and 2nd Life Home Repair and Remodeling Services!
Description of Work: Tim came and did a bathroom remodel in our house. He did an outstanding job. He tore out an existing vanity, light fixtures, toilet, tile shower and tile floor. He installed a new vanity, light fixture, tile floor, shower door and tiled the shower. Everything looks and works great! We were under a tight timeline and he made sure to meet the deadline. He kept me informed the whole time and answered all my questions. He picked up supplies and always found an answer to any snag we might encounter. He went above and beyond my expectations and even installed a chandelier and did some outside painting for me. I would highly recommend him for your next home project, either big or small. I intend on calling him again!

The crew showed up promptly as scheduled, set up what they needed and completed the work promptly. I asked them to cut back far enough so that the replacement board would not come loose easily. Where I expect they would cut off approximately 4-6 feet and cover two or three rafters they actually replaced the whole 8 foot section of fascia. I asked them to check other parts of the second-story (which was outside the scope of work) which they did without hesitation. While some companies may have taken advantage of the situation and told me more work needed to be done, 2nd Life Home Repair did not. They made some suggestions about removing tree branches from my neighbors yard but they said that was all that needed to be done. This company is definitely high on my list when considering future work I need to have done.
Description of Work: My house is "maintenance-free" with vinyl clad fascia & aluminum clad soffit. The house was built in the late 1970s with exposed wood for fascia and soffit. I had the gutters replaced and added the fascia and soffit in the late 1980s. Now, one of the original 1" x 8" fascia boards underneath rotted out and the fascia cladding was hanging loose. I needed the gutter taken loose, the fascia removed and the underlying board cut off and replaced. This was all second-story ladder work.

Tim was able to stop by the same day I called for an estimate. We initially talked about repairing the staircase (since I managed to break the stringers during a remodeling project), but eventually decided to go with replacing the whole thing, since the old one was in bad shape. Tim was able to accommodate the change easily. We had initially scheduled the work for a few days prior, but it had to be moved due to some prior commitments on Tim's part. Tim arrived on time when promised, along with a helper, and got to work right away. They finished the job in half a day, and the finished product looks great. We would definitely use Tim again, and we have already asked him to give us estimates for another small job.
Description of Work: Complete removal of a small, two-tread pine staircase, including the stringers, and replacing it with a completely new staircase made from red oak.

The service was great. When came for estimate, he spent a lot of time explaining and giving recommendations. He was here for about 45 minutes on an early Saturday morning. We asked for estimates on multiple projects. When he came to do the porch he and his crew were fast, efficient, and very professional. He explained that he had to reinforce the porch because that wood was rotting, explained how he did it, and gave an estimate of the additional cost (a clause for that was included in the original estimate). When he was finished, it didn't look like anyone had been working on our house. We had a nice looking porch, and there was not even a speck of sawdust left to show that people had been there. We are completely satisfied with the work that was done and are planning to hire them again for future projects.

Very prompt service. Timothy came the same day I called to give me a quote and even began the work. Dug the wholes, poured the concrete and made a wooden clothesline post for the yard. He fixed some issues with the kitchen sink and installed a new faucet. Set up a water hose reel, and installed a paper holder in ceramic tile. Timothy was very friendly and professional. He left all areas clean. Timothy did a very nice job all around.

Tim listened carefully to the needs and offered good ideas. He is always a pleasant person and entirely professional. As plans progressed, he was cooperative in resolving some issues. Two other bids we considered. One bid was considerably higher and rejected mostly due to that. The other was competitive but the design was compromised to accommodate the limitations of that bidder. Once underway, work progressed okay. An unexpected issue with a truck affected the schedule. Some opportunities to limit the spread of dust out of the bathroom were missed. But the end result is wonderful and we are pleased, overall. Thanks, Tim!
Description of Work: They replaced a bath tub with a walk-in shower appropriate for an elderly couple. They relocated a window and added heavy-duty grab bars and an adjustable shower head. The base was a pre-fabricated, one-piece component. The walls were tiled. They also installed replacement windows in the adjacent bedroom.

Tim Marek has been a wonderful handyman for three years and has performed numerous jobs around my house. He was never more valuable, however, than on the day after Christmas when I called him to report a Christmas day break-in at my house. On the day after Christmas, a Saturday, he gave eight hours of his time to come over and measure my door, go to Home Depot and purchase a new door and install it. The previous door had been kicked in, necessitating repairs to the door jamb. I do not hesitate to recommend Tim; not only is he a skilled worker he has a compassionate and caring heart.

Tim Marek responded quickly and completely to our request for an estimate and was able to start soon after we gave him the go ahead. He and Greg worked well with the requirements of our high-rise condo association and finished the shower stall work in time for us to have a functioning shower for Christmas and Christmas visitors. Shortly after the New Year we got word that the countertops were ready. Tim removed the old sinks on Monday and the new tops and sinks were installed on Tuesday with the minimum time possible of brushing our teeth at the kitchen sink. It feels as though we have two new bathrooms. Both Tim and Greg were a pleasure to have in our home and as an extra treat Tim fixed a loose lock on his way out!
Description of Work: Shower stall tiles had fallen off the wall revealing an inadequate/improper backing. Tim (and Greg) tore out the old shower stall, rebuilt the backing (including fixing another problem that was revealed in the tear out), and retiled the shower stall. At the end they carefully finished off the wall including a layer of paint. Each day they left us a clean bathroom. Since they were going to be there, we asked for new countertops and sinks for both bathrooms, and a grab bar in the bathtub enclosure to be included in the estimate/work. Tim coordinated that work with the Corian countertop providers and the work was completed beautifully. Tim also installed some towel bars and hooks that we had purchased separately.

They worked hard and actually finished a day and a half early. They did excellent, careful work, and cleaned up after themselves each day.
Description of Work: Tim installed a new gas cooktop. In order to do this, he and his assistant had to pry up kitchen tile, digging out the concrete, and put a trough in the existing concrete. They also had to take apart some of the kitchen cupboards and to work with the existing cooktop fan. They had to put in a new gasline.

He did take his time to obtain a very exact estimate for us. I truly believe that that would be the final cost - he is very thoughtful and thorough. We need to postpone his services for now, because of a family issue we need to address. Again, he was never pushy with us. He is a good and honorable man. We found his name through Angie's list. Hopefully, we can move ahead at some date.

Tim is a consummate gentleman, an extremely precise contractor and an artist. This combination of qualities made for an extremely positive overall experience from day-one with the first walk through our old bathroom to the crowning day of completion, Tim was able to make our dream Victorian bathroom a reality right before our eyes, and we would be proud to display his work on our bathroom in any magazine! Watching it all unfold was an extremely satisfying and Tim even made it enjoyable for us. Tim was always very prompt with the schedule of completion and communicated very efficiently with regard to next-steps in the process. Clean-up each day was pristine. As necessary, Tim also utilizes an extremely capable and equally-precise assistant. Tim is very receptive to the client's ideas and freely offers creative ideas of his own during the process. We recommend Tim without qualification for your next job. We KNOW that he is going to become a "fixture" around our house as we pursue more home projects over time.
