He said he could do the labor for $200 and we would provide materials. He started June 30th and was there alone because my daughter had to work. We assumed he worked all day and because it wasn't a big job we thought at least one room would be done that day. He spent that day taping and mudding in the living room which my husband, who has done a lot of drywalling, estimated should have taken approx. 5 hrs. to finish. He didn't finish that day, came back July 1st, said he would be back the next day and when my daughter left for work at 8:30 he still wasn't there. He showed up at 9:00 and we assumed he worked all day. I had paid him 200.00 when he started which was the price he quoted me. When he came July 2 he brought 2 workers with him which he did not discuss with us in the beginning. They pulled the drywall down from the kitchen ceiling and found moisture damage so I agreed to having him replace the boards and replacing the insulation. I paid him 225.00 toward materials he needed. But he used part of that money to pay his helpers. Three guys worked all day on the ceiling and it still was not finished. John came back July 3 to do more taping and mudding. So we were into our 4th day and up to 425.00 in labor costs and he wasn't even close to finishing. He had said the job would be done by the end of the week. It wasn't even close. He came back on July 7th, again was there alone. I stopped to check in and he informed me that with the unforeseen problem with the kitchen ceiling, he needed another 695.00. Because I trusted him I paid him 600.00 that day and he said he would be back the next day to finish up. My husband hadn't checked on the progress of the job, but got suspicious when he learned how much we were being charged and the work was still not done. So he went to look at the job and was livid at what he saw. He called John immediately and told him the work he had done was unacceptable. He told him he had never seen such poor workmanship by someone who supposedly does this for a living. John quit that night on the phone, said he'd come by the next day to pick up his tools. My husband met him there the next day and showed him everything that was wrong with the work, but John said that was how he did it and a lot of people were very happy with his work. My husband didn't fire him and would have let John try to make things right with us, but it was easier to quit on us. So my husband spent a day and a half redoing all of the shoddy work that John had done. He had to sand everything down, re-tape and re-mud. But he did it alone in a day and a half and it looks professional. We also took a lot of pictures of John's work that show how bad it was. The following week we received a final bill from John saying we owed him a balance of 492.57 for additional labor costs. Needless to say. we did not and will not pay him. Electrical wiring was rewired wrong also. NEGLIGENCE!
