Overall, I thought the experience was quite pleasant. I worked with Paul Loomis. Paul made some suggestions to cut the costs on the project without sacrificing the quality. I felt his bid was fair and that he treated me fairly when it came to adding money to the initial bid. For example, upon removing the asphalt, the crew found there was a secondary layer. At first glance it was thought to be concrete. After further inspection it was found to be asphalt. This was quite unexpected. It meant additional time was needed to excavate the secondary level. Also, more stone was needed to augment the base. It was reasonable to assume that more costs would be involved. No one could have known we'd experience this scenario. Paul explained the situation and justified the additional cost to my satisfaction.

The driveway had standing water in it most of the winter. The water froze making it dangerous to walk on. The driveway does not drain water like it should. There is a large area where it is below street level. I asked the driveway be installed without the dip, but Merit did not do that.

They did good job and they were on time.

I called them regarding replacing our worn-out blacktop driveway, which they had seal-coated a couple of times in the past. (In fact, I was so happy with their work, I gave them a very positive rating on Angie's List!!) However, the scheduled date for the estimate came and went and no one showed up. A couple of days later there was an apologetic message left for my husband (not for me, though I'd done all of the arranging and I don't know how they even got his name??) and they requested to reschedule. Before I could call them back, my husband (again--what's with only dealing with him and not me?) got a letter saying that they would NOT bid on our project due to "drainage problems." I am still not sure whether they even looked at the driveway, and what drainage problems they are referring to. I called them to ask about this 2 weeks ago and no one has returned my call. I am very disappointed in them, as I had previously recommended them as a good company.

This is the second time we have had Merit seal our driveway. They are always on time and do a great job and their prices are very competitive. We highly recommend them.

They showed up when they said they would after postponing for a day due to rain. They filled in the cracks and seal-coated the asphalt portion of the driveway. I thought that the price was somewhat high, but I guess that's what to expect when oil prices are going through the roof.

ONE DAY AFTER WE HAD OUR DRIVEWAY DONE IT RAINED AND MERIT CAME BACK AND REAPPLIED THE COATING BECAUSE A LOT OF IT HAD WASHED OFF. THIS WAS DONE AT NO EXTRA COST. WE WERE VERY PLEASED WITH THEIR WORK.

We were very pleased with the work completed for us by Merit Asphalt, Inc. The workers were very thorough with the job that they did in removal of the old driveway and excavating a new area for the pull off. Our asphalt has held up well and looks great.

Terrific experience - A+++. On time, cleaned up area, work was exactly as described. Good looking work, too. Courteous workers. High recommendation. We've seen their work around the area quite a bit, and it always looks good. Keep it up!

This company gave me a very competitive price to have a new driveway installed. They arrived at the time they said they would and finished the same day.

I was impressed by the crews they had working for them, they were courteous and did very neat work. They kept everything very clean as they worked. The foreman was very conscience of his work and that of the crew he ran also. The job turned out very nice, flat, with no puddles of standing water after a rain storm.

The company came the day after we called for an estimate. They were able to schedule us within six weeks. When it was time for the work a multitude of trucks, machines and men showed up to do the work. It took only one hour and the results are excellent.

AMAZINGLY EFFICIENT! THEY SHOW UP, GET TO WORK, AND 1-2-3 THEY'RE DONE. QUITE AN IMPRESSIVE OPERATION. IT HAS LASTED WELL. WE WILL USE THEM AGAIN.

HE REFUSED TO GIVE ME A BID, BECAUSE HE SAID THE GRADE WAS TOO STEEP. WHEN I CALLED TO CLARIFY, HE WAS A LITTLE DISMISSIVE ON THE PHONE.

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND MERIT. AFTER WE COMMITTED TO THEIR WORK, THEY RECOMMENDED LOTS OF ADDITIONAL GRAVEL FILL, WHICH WE AGREED TO (REASONABLE GIVEN AGE). THE ASPHALT DELIVERED WAS FROM TWO DIFFERENT SOURCES OR BATCHES AND WAS VERY DIFFERENT CONSISTENCY (ONE SMOOTH AND ONE VERY ROCKY/GRAVEL/ROUGH) WHICH DID NOT BECOME OBVIOUS UNTIL THE DAY AFTER THE JOB WAS COMPLETED. WHEN CALLED, THEY CHECKED THE SURFACE AND SAID THEY WOULD DO NOTHING ABOUT IT, AND THAT WHEN THEY APPLIED THE SURFACE SEALER THE NEXT SUMMER IT WOULD LOOK THE SAME ALL OVER. THIS SUMMER THE SEALER WAS APPLIED AND THERE IS STILL AN OBVIOUS DIFFERENCE. AND THERE ARE SEVERAL CRACKS IN THE SURFACE ALREADY. THE PREVIOUS DRIVEWAY FINISH NEVER CRACKED VERTICALLY, ONLY HORIZONTALLY (ACROSS THE DRIVE). THIS SURFACE ALREADY HAS VERTICAL CRACKS (SOME AS FAR AS ONE FOOT INTO THE DRIVE) WITH GRASS GROWING THROUGH THE CRACKS NEAR THE DRIVEWAY EDGE. THE INSTALLERS WERE PROFESSIONAL - THE SALES/SERVICE WERE NOT VERY RESPONSIVE.

RANDY WAS VERY HELPFUL IN POINTING OUT THINGS WE NEEDED AND WHAT TO ASK FOR WITH OTHER ESTIMATES (WE HAD 4 AND AWARDED MERIT). THE CREW CALLED AHEAD TO SCHEDULE AND WAS VERY PLEASANT. WE DO HAVE SOME CRUMBS TO DIG OUT OF A WINDOW WELL, BUT OTHER THAN THAT EVERYTHING WAS COMPLETED ON TIME AND TO OUR SATISFACTION.

LETTERS OF DISSATISFACTION WERE MAILED ON JULY 9 WHEN THE WORK WAS DONE ON JULY 3, 2003 AND AGAIN ON AUG 23, 2003 WHEN THE CORRECTION OF THE DRIVEWAY WAS MADE. SINCE THEN, I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY PERSONAL FEEDBACK, BUT ONLY PROMISED A SITE VISIT. NO FURTHER RECOMMENDATION WAS COMMUNICATED EITHER BY MAIL OR TELEPHONE. HOWEVER, I HAVE RECEIVED ONLY BILLS FROM THE COMPANY WITH ATTACHED LATE FEES. I WOULD APPRECIATE THE JOB BEING COMPLETED TO ITS STANDARDS THAT ARE ADVERTISED ON ANGIE'S LIST WITH NO LATE FEES ATTACHED AND I WOULD APPRECIATE BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE. THE WORK WAS POOR, SINCE THIS IS AN ASPHALT COMPANY I WOULD EXPECT THEM TO BE ABLE TO FIX CRACKS IN DRIVEWAYS AND MY LAWN WAS DAMAGED AS A RESULT OF THEIR SLOPPINESS, WHICH WE HAD TO CORRECT ON OUR OWN. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO OTHERS AND I WILL NOT USE THEM IN THE FUTURE.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS ABOUT THIS COMPANY IS THEY WERE VERY HONEST AND THEY WERE WILLING TO LOSE A JOB TO DO QUALITY WORK. JEFF TERP WAS VERY GOOD AND HONEST. THEY DID A VERY GOOD JOB. IT WAS A NOISY AND MESSY JOB BUT THEY DID A REALLY NICE JOB WITH THE CLEAN UP. THEY WERE VERY RESPONSIVE AND DID A GREAT JOB.
