Terrible! This entire ordeal caused an extreme amount of stress and a business like this should not be allowed to operate. We were bullied and threatened by this business and I am so upset that someone like this is on Angie's list!
Description of Work: My story begins on November 21, 2014 when JTS Roofing stopped out to give me a quote to replace my roof & gutters. I gave JTS a call because one of my clients was very happy with his work. I found his quote to be detailed and exactly what I was looking for. His price was excellent too compared to others and even made the comment there was plenty of profit in it for him. I signed the contract and he requested a 30 percent down payment so he could “lock in the price with his distributer” for the spring installation. Fast forward to April 2, 2015 when I receive a call from JTS Roofing stating he had already completed 2 roofs and I was 6th on his list. Pending weather he should be there the 3rd week of April, but no later than the 1st week of May. I said no problem, when he is ready, give me a call. Never heard from him until mid-May when I was told I was 3rd on his list. No problem, I was really looking for a June installation when the temperatures would be higher to help glue the roof down better. Come June still nothing and no returned phone calls. Finally on July 15th I received a text message saying they would be here next week … pending weather. I don’t know where he lives, but he obviously gets a lot more rain than I do. The following week still nothing and still no returned phone calls. August 5th one of his associates’ shows up saying the shingles I ordered are a special order and price has gone up, which didn’t make sense since back in November that was the whole point of signing the contract. He also wanted another $1000 and 50 percent down payment or he will cancel the job and return my deposit. I should have taken him up on the offer, but even with the extra $1000 he is still quite a bit less than my next best estimate. I give in and am told the dumpster will be there and they will start working at 8am Monday August 17th. It rained on the 17th and communication from JTS letting us know what was going on. At 7AM on the 18th the dumpster shows up, which we thought would be the start of our project. August 19th and 20th nobody shows up to install my roof, but Thursday the 20th JTS finally calls and admits the problem has been his distributors can’t get the shingle I ordered which made no sense since we now have a dumpster for a job nobody knows when will start. Why couldn’t he tell me that back in May or June!! The lies just keep coming one after another!! The dumpster sits in my driveway for 3 weeks and the level of frustration continues to rise, since my wife was convinced we were being scammed by JTS Roofing. A different shingle is ordered and promised to be delivered Friday September 4th when they state they will start stripping the roof. A crew of 5 would work over the Labor Day weekend and would have the roof done in 3 days + 1 for the gutters (per the contract), except nobody shows up again! Late that Friday we are told the shingles should be delivered to the distributer by 7PM that evening, but they won’t get delivered until Tuesday after the holiday. Calling JTS on Saturday to get confirmation the shingles were in fact delivered results in a 57 second voice mail of F-bombs to both me and my wife accusing us of playing games with him and how it wasn’t his fault I ordered a special order shingle. No, but you could return your phone calls and you didn’t have to wait 4 months to tell me they weren’t available either + you didn’t have to put a dumpster in my driveway if you didn’t have the singles yet. But then again, nothing is ever this guys’ fault and he has absolutely no idea how to treat customers or to communicate what issues are coming up. But then again when you have a full time job elsewhere, it is hard to run a roofing business on the side! Finally Tuesday, September 8th a crew shows up and they strip the old roof, 3 weeks to the day the dumpster was delivered. The shingles get delivered Wednesday around noon, but Wednesday it is raining. Thursday they don’t show up either saying it’s raining, but it didn’t rain at my house, so not sure what other job they were on. Finally Friday around 4pm one guy shows for a few hours, but nothing gets done and we are told that they will return on Saturday. We start calling at 9 asking where everyone is and finally around noon a couple of guys show up. What was supposed to be a crew of 5, turned out to be a crew of 1.5 most days. One would work a few hours, the other till dark. Finally after 2 weeks most of the shingles were installed, unfortunately they also realized they were short 1.5 bundles and it would take a week to get more. JTS tells me he will drive to Minnesota to get them and our roof will be done on Monday. That same Friday they were to install the gutters, unfortunately when a crew of 3 arrived for the install, John wasn’t available to give the COD payment to the gutter company. I offered to pay but the crew chief wasn’t allowed to make that decision, so the gutters would have to be another day. But again, you can’t run a company when you have a full-time job elsewhere. Week 3, Monday afternoon the gutters are cut and hung. Unfortunately they didn’t put any drip apron on so they had to redo the installation. Yet another setback with JTS Roofing and another deadline missed! Not much happened during the balance of week 3 as we were waiting for the additional shingles. Knowing they would only order enough shingles to complete the job and knowing I wanted some extra for spares, I ordered 3 bundles from Lowes myself. Good thing, because JTS never did order any and ended up using mine to complete the job. Good thing I ordered 3 bundles because they were really short 2.5 bundles. I pick up the shingles on the night of the 25th. I text JTS with the understanding that bright and early I expect a crew to finally finish my roof and gutters. The morning of the 26th nobody shows up and the phone calls and texts start wondering where the crew was. JTS tells us they are 30 minutes away. Again another lie, 11:30 one guy shows up! He works all day, but doesn’t finish. We are promised Sunday. The morning of the 27th a different guy shows up at 9:30 and stands around until 11:30 when another guy shows up. It takes some time to see work being done, but a new wrinkle comes up. No nail gun to finish the job, and not enough gutters end caps were ordered, so no my roof won’t be done today either. To say we both were upset is an understatement! At 6:52 the next morning, I receive a text stating that the roof will be done today and that we must pay immediately upon final inspection otherwise a lien will be placed on my house! JTS Roofing threatened us once again! Monday the 28th we were promised 8AM work would start and our roof would finally be done, except once again nobody shows up. Around 1PM, two guys show up to work. They work until 8 and at 8:15 they wanted to do a final inspection, in the dark! That would not happen. Final inspection is scheduled for the following day at noon. I do the final inspection and hand over a check for the balance with an understanding that a lien waiver would be sent. Still waiting for that lien waiver! But my check was cashed that afternoon! In the end, the subcontractors did a decent job, but what a painful and stressful process to get a new roof and gutter. After all we were put through all JTS offered was a $500 discount because the new shingles were actually less than the original ones and another $500 for using the shingles I ordered and paid for, which brought the price back to the original bid. In the end, JTS didn’t take anything additional off the price for all the h*** they put us through or the shingle being cheaper that the original shingle. JTS Roofing is a terrible business and should not be in business, nobody should go through what we went through and to say we are upset is an understatement!
