Weatherization Services is experienced in using blown cellulose and spray foam insulation. We strive for perfection and enjoy generating energy savings for all of our customers. Our crews are clean and courteous and understand that “The customer is always right”. Additional phones: (414) 841-3412. Additional fax: (414) 877-1723. We use blown cellulose insulation composed of a minimum 85% recycled fibers. Unlike traditional insulation, it is not manufactured with any formaldehyde, asbestos, mineral fiber, or fiberglass. The density of blown cellulose insulation gives it a high R-value per inch, which it maintains even under extreme conditions. Cellulose insulation achieves great overall energy efficiency, because it is blown into tiny cavities. It surrounds plumbing pipes and electrical wiring, therefore reducing any air infiltration by sealing gaps where energy can escape.

The service technician was on time. He was polite and courteous. He discussed the areas of the home that needed attention. He promised a written report to be e-mailed to me within a few days. After a week went by, I called the office and told them that I had not yet received the written report. The office girl told me that it usually takes two weeks. The audit was done during the third week of March. With no response yet, I called back the second week in July. After several apologies and verification of my e-mail address, I was told that the results would be e-mailed to me by 3 p.m. The results never came.

They gave us some ideas on things that we need to do. It worked fine. We have not spent more than what the deal was for. They subcontracted someone and they showed up with no identification. My husband was here and that was fine, but I would not have appreciated that have I been here by myself. I needed some kind of identification. I think the service was fine. Information was provided. The person was polite and did what he was supposed to do. The price was fine. When he put the vacuum thing into the front door, the fireplace was open and he pulled ash into my house. He came at the time he was supposed to. But I think having some kind of identification of the company that you're with is part of being professional.

They were wonderful. They came over and explained tax incentives and how much it could save me to add insulation. They sub-contracted another company and they did a full day of insulation in our attic and basement. A year later I really noticed the savings on my electric bill.

Everything went well with regard to scheduling the audit and the day of the actual audit. The report I received was actually two reports: A summary of the audit and a "Scope of Work," which was a proposal to do a series of upgrades/repairs to my home. The total cost for all the projects would have been $8,580. The report summarizing the energy audit was actually a set of captioned photos taken in my home by the auditor. Most of the captions simply said what was being photographed ("track lighting," "new refrigerator," and ?Dryer is vented in hard pipe and the water heater is wrapped? for example). Other captions did convey useful information ("2 recessed lights that will need to be boxed" and "75,000 but is too big 1983 furnace is past its useful life"). Some were misspelled or too cryptic to be understood by me ("The door to the garage is al;ready wxst" and "WCD -5.1, small gas leak," for example). Some captions were troubling. For example a photo of the furnace had the caption ?2160 co very high, 93.2% eff, 1.? Does this mean the level of carbon monoxide is dangerously high? If so, shouldn't the auditor have said something to me before he left? My initial reaction to the audit report was that this must be an attachment to a written report. I emailed Mr. Konovalento the day after getting the report to inquire if that was what happened. That was over a week ago and so far have received no response from him. Given the lack of detail in the energy audit report I have no idea what the cost savings might be for any of the recommendations made in the Scope of Work nor how to prioritize the suggested actions. In summary, I am very disappointed with the audit. Although it can be argued that you get what you pay for and this audit was very inexpensive, I felt the report was so meager that I didn't get my money?s worth even at the low price. I am even more disappointed because I purchased the audit through Angie's List.
Description of Work: The energy auditor from The Energy House (apparently contracted by Weatherization Services to do the audit) arrived at the agreed upon time on April 19 and spent over an hour checking out the house including the attic and basement. He took many pictures during his tour. I asked him when he arrived if I should follow him around during the audit to hear his observations. He said I was welcome to do that but it wouldn't be necessary since I would receive a full written report. I heard nothing further until June 6 when I called Weatherization Services to inquire about the audit report. I was told it was finished and Fred Konovalento of Weatherization Services sent it to me within ten minutes.

Insulation in our basement looked quite old and we were wondering if needs to be changed. We received a quote from another company for 5000$ to change the insulation in our basement (under the seal) to foam insulation. The "Weatherization Services" looked at our basement in a timely fashion and to our relief concluded that probably the effect of this expenditure would be negligible unless we apply insulation to all the walls in basement and crawl space and even then the energy savings will be minimal. We were very happy that instead of focusing on selling their services they gave an honest assessment of the effectiveness of their service. We will definitely use them in future.

Tech arrived early with a phone call to make sure we could accept an early visit. Using advance equipment he search our home. After a hour we where informed that the insulation in our crawl space was dangerous. We had it analyzed and found an unknown dangerous insulation was used. The tech did not do the air flow test for our protection. We are having all insulation removed and new safe insulation installed. In 2 weeks the tech will be back to do the flow test. Our tech saved use from poison in the air. I highly recommend this company where customer safety comes first.

The home energy audit was on time as scheduled, but is not part of Weatherization Services (although I scheduled it through them). The energy audit is actually performed by a third party state-contracted employee, which I think is an excellent idea as there is not a financial interest with his audit. The breakdown is when I scheduled for Fred to go over things with me so I could clarify what I wanted done. I made the appointment with Josie and even confirmed via email. The day Fred was scheduled to come over, no one arrived. I called Weatherization Services (it was a Saturday) and no one picked up. I left a message for Fred, which was returned a few hours later. Fred said he assumed the appointment had been cancelled, despite the fact I emailed him saying I would see him Saturday two days before. Fred did eventually show up that afternoon. Going over the quote, there were items on the there that weren't applicable such as sealing the sill boxes (I was having them all spray foamed, which acts as a thermal break making sealing unnecessary) and sealing my chimney (my chimney is located entirely outside of the insulated structure). I mentioned these to Fred and he agreed they were not needed. When I scheduled the work, I spoke to Josie and made sure she emailed me a confirmation for the work date. The workers arrived a little late, but nothing significant and proceeded to work hard all day. They were friendly and pretty clean. Insulation is a dirty business but they did their best to seal off the areas. Initially, they didn't have enough spray foam for the basement and had to call for more at the end of the day [more on this below]. They were also not overly gentle with their ladders on my painted gutters - they scraped paint off quiet a few areas banging the ladders around. They also left a big yellow smear of what I believe to be glue on my white house when filling one of the drop soffits with insulation, but I was able to paint over it without issue. After they installed the roof vents; however, I noticed on windy days the new vents were creating a backdraft on my bathroom exhaust fans causing the dampers to clack and bang with each wind gust. I looked at the vents they installed. They were low quality plastic roof vents with large openings. Being west-facing, and Milwaukee being a windy area, I told them I wanted a lower profile quality steel vent to try and mitigate the backdraft issue. Fred said he had never had this issue before with their vents and would ask the owner how to proceed. In the end, I ended up ordering the steel vents I wanted ($80.00 cost to me) and Weatherization Services switched out their low-quality vents for my high-quality vents for an extra $75.00. At this time, they also had to re-spray foam all the basement sill boxes. I measured the depth and in most areas it was less than 1" when the minimum contract coverage was suppose to be 2". I suspect they were trying to spread out the foam as much as possible to reduce usage. Weatherization Services did correct this with the re-spraying, although some areas are still a little shallow, but this is most likely due to limited access with the spray gun to these tight locations. Overall, Weatherization Services does a quality job at a good price, but be sure to request quality roof vents (plastic vents should never be put on roof) and ensure proper insulation coverage. Communication is poor and I had to email/call multiple times to get a response. If you are willing to stay on top them with frequent emails and calls, then things should go okay, although this should not be necessary.
Description of Work: Sealed attic space and blown cellulose insulation to R-50 from R-20. Insulated all sills in open basement to R-11 with 2" minimum spray foam insulation. Insulated three dropped soffits. Installed insulated vent lines to roof vents for three bathroom fans. Performed home energy audit.

He never sends an official quote. When he was looking around my upstairs, he quoted me without even taking measurements at all. I do not know if he was an anomaly, because his company actually had really great record in Angie's list. When he went at my house, he did not measure things. He just kind of looked around, and gave me a quote. The guy never actually sent the quote. I think I asked him a few questions about the quote, and he did not really have a good response. I do not think he was being very ethical. In addition, he missed the first appointment and was late for the second appointment.

The person who did the inspection was on time and very courteous. He checked every room in the house and the basement. He then did the test for leaks which I will get the results of in a few weeks. He let me know that pretty much everything looked good but I needed more insulation in the attic and to use cellulose and not fiber glass. He let me know that I should get the results in a few weeks and that if I had any questions feel free to call.

The evaluator, a subcontractor, did not look where the job was until the morning the work was scheduled, and since I live outside the City of Milwaukee he arrived about an hour late. He then rushed through the evaluation extremely quickly since he had another job to get done that day. He looked into the attic but just barely, not enough to actually determine the amount or type of insulation present. He did not go into the attic. He did use an infared scanner during the blower door test, but he didn't look at the doors or windows, and only evaluated one wall in each room, and only along the ceiling not the entire wall. The evaluator was personable, professional, and did seem to be knowlegeable about the various house components. The evaluator stated that the report would be available in about a week, but it took a month. I finally called, and was told I would have it in a day or two, but it took another week to arrive in my email. I question the validity of the insulation evaluation since the evaluator didn't get the details of my insulation. In addition, some of the proposed improvements did not apply to my house. It indicated that the chimney should be insulated, but I don't have a chimney; and it proposed to install a bathroom vent fan, but I already have a bathroom vent fan. I don't know the quality of the work this company typically performs, but it seems at the very least that they were overwhelmed by the amount of work they received from the Big Deal.

Fred was punctual for our testing appointment. He explained what he was doing and answered all our questions; and showed us several shots he had just taken with the infrared camera. The testing was done fairly quickly, with minimal disruption. We received his initial report right away, including photos; but it took several phone calls and emails over a period of a few weeks to obtain the Focus on Energy report detailing recommendations and payback periods. Once we received the report, we decided to go ahead with the recommendations, and scheduled an appointment. We were told it would probably take a little more than a day to get everything done. The crew arrived promptly on the morning they were scheduled; and set to work immediately after introducing themselves to us. The work wound up taking two full days; and the crew worked very hard and for long hours both days. They were very polite, and checked with us several times during the job to let us know how things were going. After they were finished, we did notice some areas of the basement that still seemed to have some air leakage; we called the company and they had someone out the next day to correct that. The post-insulation testing showed that we had reduced our air leakage enough to qualify for a rebate. We were very pleased with how the entire project went, and would not hesitate to recommend this company.
Description of Work: Evaluation of current insulation throughout house. Testing for air leaks with doorway blower/fan; infrared photos of heat loss. Insulation done: several inches of blown-in cellulose in attic. Air leaks sealed: flashing and foam sealant in attic at chimney, foam sealant in basement rim joists, insulation and weatherstripping of attic door, and wrap/insulation around exterior of attic bedroom. Post-insulation testing for air leaks in order to qualify for Focus on Energy rebate.

The initial scheduling of the audit went well. The contractor was helpful and performed a good home inspection on-site. We were told we should receive the results in about a week. However, it took many follow up calls to get the results from the audit. It took over a month to finally get the results. The results were not as detailed as I had expected. I would give the contractor an "A" for the inspection itself, but had to give the company a lower rating due to the problems with the report.

I actually just received the results by email. I was under the impression that they would come out to the house and go over the results with me, but they didn't do that. The technician seemed to know what he was doing and was sharing with us as he did things. I had thought that there would of been more followup. They did send us some documents by email and one of them I couldn't open. So I'm not sure how useful it was. Part of the problem is anything we look up on Angie's List, most are in Milwaukee but we would prefer to deal with local companies if we can. But often there is no one in Racine listed on Angie's List. I think with this company, they probably didn't think it was worth it to make a second trip all the way to Racine to meet with us in person and I really can't blame them for that. They did have to reschedule with us a couple of times and they were a little late for the appointment. Next time I think we will try to find someone local.

Difficulty scheduling (due to the business generated by the Groupon offer, I expect) and on the scheduled day I left work early to meet Fred. I got a call a few minutes before he was due to indicate he was running behind and would be about 45 minutes late. Conversations were brief and informative, and inspection was quick. I received the estimate by email a few days later. It seemed a little high, and had a "sealing recessed lighting" item on it related to a recent remodel that I had done. I talked to the electrician that installed the lighting (who I know and trust), and he assured me the can's put in would not need sealing. Since the item in question was about a third of the overall estimate, I decided to pass.

I want to split this review into two halves: Performing the Energy Audit - the guy that came was excellent and is the only reason for any high marks. I don't exactly remember, but I believe he was not part of Weatherization LLC, but included him in this review in case he was. Answered all my questions and never shied away from any topic. When he left, I was thinking that the results were going to be great. Report & Delivery - just terrible. Very little detail. Had a picture of my refrigerator and cooktop and the observation just had "Appliances" typed in it. LImited photos from the infrared scanning. No quote for correcting leaking canned lights when the auditor indicated this was one of the main issues. No follow-up outside of one email. Perhaps, they were overwhelmed by running the Angie's list deal.

Our ratings are for the ENERGY AUDIT only. The audit on was completed efficiently and professionally and the technician was very personable. He explained that he was an independent contractor who would be forwarding the results of the audit to Weatherization and they would send us a proposal for the work indicated in the report. We received an email with attachment detailing the audit and prices for proposed work 3 weeks later. The business apologized for the delay and that was not a huge issue for us at the time. However, when we decided, to have some insulation work I emailed the company to ask if the prices included in the quote reflected the 30% discount advertised in the deal and we have yet to receive a response. While my email to them may have been lost, it would have been good business to give us a follow-up call. So we were happy with the audit and will have some insulation work done. Since we haven't heard from Weatherization Services we will probably have the insulation work done by a local (Racine) business.

He did a quick inspection and then just said that it would be better to have an energy audit done. So he came back at a later date and performed an energy audit. He had some good information about rebates that could be gotten on improvements but I never got anything in writing from him after the service was performed. I was hoping that I would get some report with specific recommendations and numbers and contact information about the rebate programs.
