I cannot say enough great things about Ted. He is everything you want in a contractor/carpenter: punctual, honest, fair, hardworking, detail-oriented and very skilled. He has an excellent work ethic and is incredibly reliable. He starts a project when he says he will and works continuously until the project is complete. The final outcome of his work was excellent and he was a pleasure to be around and have in the house. We had no concerns at all about him working on projects while we were gone. The one risk is that once he is in your home you won't want him to leave (i.e. Ted - could you find time to finish the fireplace mantel? could you add trim around this door?). If you have an old house you will find endless jobs once he is there:-). The main projects he completed for us was to add custom trim to the top of our kitchen cabinets, which were then painted; he demolished an existing front closet and built custom mudroom lockers including drywall and floor install; and he built a kitchen banquette. The quality of the work is exceptional and we will definitely have him back for additional projects. I have tried to post before and after pics and hopefully you can see attached to this post.

This is the second time I hired Ted to do carpentry. Why does a person hire someone twice? In my case, because he does excellent work, his price is very fair, and he's honest. I trusted Ted so much that my wife and I left him alone in the house to work while I went to a doctors appointment. It's hard to find someone who's honest, goes beyond pleasing his client, and is fair priced. I was having trouble finding a tile man, so I asked Ted if he knew of someone. He recommended Mitch Gruichich of MG Floors. Mitch did a perfect job of tiling and granite installation. It's because of Ted & Mitch that my bathroom looks so beautiful. It turned out that Ted & Mitch knew each other since grade school. Two honest contractors who excel in their work.
Description of Work: I hired Ted to do carpentry and some drywall on my master bathroom. Ted changed the door opening from one wall to another, leveled floors and walls by planing high spots, built a knee wall, raised the vent fan and tapered the ceiling to give a huge improvement in the looks of the final finish of the bathroom, installed a new subfloor, and drywalled the walls.

Ted removed and replaced the outside exposed beam "false" covering. Ted used different/better materials than the original, for reduced chances of future rotting. (See photos) Ted showed up on time for the estimate and the proposed work days. Scheduling the work could have been complicated because of anticipated rain but he got everything done before the rains. Ted is very professional and communicates scheduling great. The finished beams are beautiful. I would definitely use his services again.

Weird experience with Ted. He was right on time and came over when he said he would. Seemed friendly. He took measurements and said he would get back to me in a week. So I waited a week and then texted him. He said he found some materials that might work. But once I started asking about cost he just replied with generalities like "it will take me 2 days" along with his hourly rate. So 2 days x 8 hours a day? 4 hours a day? 12 hours a day? I asked these questions and told him that I'd like to see the estimate on paper (didn't think that would be too much to ask) and I never heard from him again. It's been a month. Ended up being a huge waste of time.

Ted did a fantastic job installing new baseboard all around the main level of my home. I had just purchased this home and hired Kern's Carpet One to install new hardwood flooring. Although the floors themselves are a good product,Kern's (and their subcontractor) did a very sloppy job with both the demo of the old tile and the installation of the floors. Not only is Kern's extremely overpriced, but they failed to lay enough subfloor in order to level out the flooring to meet the door frames -- resulting in large gaps of up to several inches between the floor and all the door frames. Additionally, they had bashed huge holes in my walls during the demo of the old flooring. In an effort to cover up as much of this damage as possible, I purchased all new 5-1/4 inch baseboard, and then needed a carpenter to install it. I found Ted here on Angie's list and hired him based on his good reviews. Ted does excellent work. He is very professional and his prices are very reasonable. I got a few estimates and Ted's was the best. He completed the entire job in 2 days. I couldn't believe how much better my house looked just with the new baseboards. I was very impressed with Ted's work. But as good as he is, there's only so much he could do about the gaps in the doorways -- but he certainly tried. Without even asking him to, Ted took some of the leftover quarter round and used it to try to level/fill in the gaps from the floors to the doorways. What a great surprise! He fixed nearly every issue that Kern's had messed up. I'm still left with some gaps in the door frames -- but I discussed solutions with Ted and we agreed that the door frames will be a major job. I wasn't ready to tackle it at the time, but when I'm ready, my first call will be to Ted. Based on this experience, I would not hesitate to hire Ted again. Just a couple notes: Ted is a do-er not a talker. If you call him to set up work, please don't be put off by his lack of charisma over the phone. When you meet him and speak with him in person you will find him to be very pleasant and kind. But he's not a salesman, and that is clear when you call him. Second note: I would recommend getting a written estimate. Ted doesn't really do email, so have him write something down for you. When I was getting ready to pay him for the job, we had a misunderstanding over the quoted price. i am 100% certain he quoted me a price over the phone that was $100 less than the price he was sure he'd quoted me. Because he did such good work, and because his price was still lower than the other quotes, I went ahead and paid what he thought he'd quoted. But, still, it made for an unhappy surprise. Overall, though, very happy with this provider.

Cut and placed new trim on doors and baseboards after we replaced flooring following a flood. There was a very uneven and large transition between wood floor and our new kitchen floor, and Ted custom made a transition piece that is beautiful. Some baseboards had challenging aspects and he found a way to make them all look great. Ted was professional, prompt, and a very nice guy. We contracted for him to come and do our job about two weeks after he came to review the job because we were going to be having house guests in between. He came as promised on the day we planned and came back a few weeks later when we realized we needed one more thing done. We would definitely call him again for any finish carpentry work.

I reached out to Mr. Rader the week of New Year's and he had availability to swing by and look at the project that week. He said he'd be in touch with an estimate, but let me know he'd planned to do the work the following week. He called the ensuing week on Tuesday and we scheduled the work to be done on Friday. I had told him of a 1-hour conflict I had, and when he arrived on Friday morning, he remembered that without prompting and worked around my schedule, which was very impressive because it showed he listened to me. I gave an 'A' on price, while I can't necessarily vouch for the price vs. time worked, I did appreciate his level of professionalism and was happy to have fully functioning doors in the upper level of the home, the lack of drafts in the dining area and the anchored vent covering to keep children from crawling in. I would use Mr. Rader again.
Description of Work: Cut solid wood doors to fit thresholds in five places that needed work following carpeting the upstairs area of the house. Rehung doors. Placed quarter round in dining room following floor refinishing. Secured previously broken vintage return vent cover.

Called Ted for estimate on hanging doors. He came out the day he said he would and gave me an estimate for the work. He also gave me some advice as to whether or not to buy all prehung doors. He said only the fire door needed to be prehung, that he could use the hardware from the closet and basement doors so I would only have to buy the door slabs. I then ordered the doors from Menards (unfinished) and had to wait three weeks for them to come in. I stained and varnished and when all was ready I called Ted. He called me back on a Sunday and asked if I was available the next day for him to do the work. I was so he came the next day around 10AM. He finished the job around 3PM. He did a very good job and I would definitely hire him again. His estimate had been $450 to $500 depending on how much cutting he had to do on the doors. He charged me $475 when the job was done which I felt was a fair price.

It all went very well. He was neat with his work and the work was done right. He was on time--showed up when he was scheduled.

l Ted took about two weeks to do the work. He showed up when he said he would and was very pleasant to be around. He worked on my home as if it were his own. My wife and I are very satisfied with his work and would recommend him to anyone who has remodeling too be done.
Description of Work: Ted Raders Carpentry L L C 9628 West Lincoln Ave. West Allis, Wisconsin 1-414-659-6792 I found Teds Carpentry on Angie's list of which I had just signed up, for the sole purpose of getting someone who I could count on to do some remodeling. I had three estimates, with Teds Carpentry being the lowest in price, so I decided too go with him. The job I had was to extend two walls on the second floor porch off the master bedroom so I didn't have to go outside to enter the 4th. bedroom. The porch is about 7 foot deep with a cathedral roof enclosing it. He moved an exiting 6'x 3' window and an exiting outside door to the new walls he constructed. I know something about carpentry so I watched him work to see what kind of a job he was doing. I was thinking about doing the job myself, but I'm going on 73 and I just don't have the energy any more. Ted was very precise with the way that he planned and constructed the enclosure. He spray foamed around the window and door which greatly stops air infiltration, glued and screwed the flooring, and all the miters he did were glued before they were nailed up. He installed flashings where needed and even used stainless steel screws in a damp area, in case I had any problems in the future that it would come apart easily.Ted also did some other work for me of which I am very satisfied with. All the work Ted did for me was Top Notch, my wife and I are so happy we found him, that we asked him to install 4 six panel doors upstairs when he has time.

It went really well. I was looking for someone to finish a project that was started by my husband. My husband was relocated for work and couldn't get the work done quickly by himself. We needed to complete this work quickly so we could get the house ready for sale. Ted's Carpentry was very prompt in providing visiting the site and preparing an estimate. He provided the most reasonable initial estimate and was fair in his pricing when we asked for several changes and additional work. I felt very comfortable with Ted working in my house with myself and two toddlers. I didn't get that creepy or awkward feeling when he was in the house. In the end, we were very happy with his work, the house sold quickly, and many people were impressed with the work that he performed.
Description of Work: Finish carpentry including crown moulding, base boards, door trim. Also installation of exterior doors, and interior doors. Identified and repaired some exterior wood rot caused by poor drainage.
