As noted above, the original installation went beautifully and we were delighted. But the cleaning/sealing/refinishing has been a complete disaster. I have made numerous calls to Milwaukee Wood & Iron to get this corrected. The few times I have been able to actually reach them, they’ve promised to come and look at the deck and re-clean and recoat it with a tinted sealer. On one of those calls, the rep asked it I’d like to have them re-coat the deck with the same type/color of stain they used on our cedar picket fence. I declined. It’s not their touted Sealwize product, and is considerably darker than the original deck. As of this writing, NO ONE HAS COME or called back. Now that winter is closing in, I cannot possibly see how they could get this taken care of before next year—which means the deck will go through a second winter, essentially unprotected. I can only imagine what it will look like next spring.Decks by Don was listed on Angie’s List in Milwaukee last year—with good reviews. It’s why we chose them—I think I even nominated them for Page of Happiness honors. But now Milwaukee Wood & Iron is nowhere to be found on Angie’s List, and nowhere near our deck, either! They also are not listed with the Milwaukee Better Business Bureau. They need to be held responsible for this work and to get it corrected. They have sent two billings for the balance due, but I will not pay it until the deck looks the way it should. Balance due is about $600. I’m now getting the feeling they may have just written us off, figuring it’s not worth they $600 they’re still owed to correct this serious problem.
Description of Work: In September 2012 Decks by Don tore our out old, rotting deck and replaced it with a new cedar deck, including steps and a decorative railing all around it. Beautiful job; completed in just a half-day. Very professional work.HOWEVER...the company changed hands (Don, the owner, passed on) late last year. His son has taken over, under a new name - Milwaukee Wood & Iron. Their office has also relocated. We had Milwaukee Wood & Iron come to clean and seal the deck this past spring—and they have made a total botch of the job. Their proprietary seal/stain provider, Sealwize, (http://www.sealwize.com/) seems to make a good product. However, two things have contributed to this completely unacceptable outcome: The power-washing was badly over-done...too aggressive. It actually stripped away the wood color on the deck surface, and left the many knots standing out starkly, surrounded by completely white wood. When the sealer was applied, I believe it was inadequate—too thinly brushed on. Although I was led to believe that a clear (untinted) sealer would even out the appearance, it did not, and the water now soaks right into the wood; it only beaded for about a month. Sadly, our deck now looks like it’s 20 years old, rather than just a year old. It is turning gray/black, is badly discolored/faded and looks very weather-beaten.
