I had a bad experience with them. They destroyed my tree. They've done my landscaping and my tree work for years and they know they're not to come when I am not here. They didn't call, they came. I wanted them to slightly lift the canopy. Well, when I came home, half the tree was gone. It was a very old black walnut, it still hasn't recovered. It cost $750 and then, when I complained, he took a couple of hundred off. But, with a tree that old it will take a decade to recover. I don't think their prices are bad. He did call me back, he did come over, but didn't seem all that concerned about it. He said, "Oh, it'll grow back. You'll be calling me in a couple of years again." So I was not happy. They didn't call me to let me know they were coming. They had worked for me for years and knew that I had to be here. They said, "Well, we thought it was strange you weren't here." Then why did you go ahead?

Description of Work: Came in on a freezing cold, 5 degree day, plowed the snow off the frozen lawn, brought in the really big equipment and went to town on the four monsters in the backyard. Lifted their canopies and thinned out woody spots. Then on to the front three. Thinned and trimmed. Excellent job, old fashion customer service. Cleans up and moves all wood. Decent price.

They did a fantastic job. My neighbors were pleased with the results, the trimmers worked quickly but safely, and they gave me some very good advice about other trees in my yard and how to stop invasive trees from growing in areas they shouldn't be growing in. They were friendly and knowledgeable and I will definitely be calling them for my future tree maintenance needs. I felt the price was decent for the area and potential danger (my house is on a hill and they were working above my sun room surrounded in stained glass and above a flower garden). They were very careful and cleaned up everything.
Description of Work: A neighbor's locust tree had been hanging low over my roof for years, shedding it's tiny leaves into my gutters. They came and trimmed a bunch of branches with a truck and rope on a severely hot day.

I had a tree struck by lightning several months ago and we did not hesitate to call North Shore Tree Service to get a price on having it removed. I also Rick to give a price on removing 4 other trees, 10 -15 stumps and the removal of a huge pile of rotting wood from behind my shed. Price was fair and they were quick. All the work was done within two weeks of the initial call and it only took one day for the work to be completed. Great Work North Shore Tree Service! I will defineatly call them next time I need any trees taken down.

I wasn't actually home when they cut the tree down - but was amazed at how fast they got it done while I was at work - and they left no trace. Very professional, and very helpful on the phone. The only slight bummer is they don't take credit card so we couldn't get points for the dollars spent.

They did a good job on the initial tree cutting . A couple days later they came and grounded up the stump and left me a pile of dirt and ground up stump, I didn't particularly like that.

Rick is always quick to respond to my call for an estimate. He comes to the house, looks over the trees and bushes and together we decide what needs to be trimmed, cut down, or treated. Rick is a wonderful guy, easy to talk to and very knowledgeable about trees.Rick's crew works with quality equipment which they use carefully and safely. And, all remnants of the work are removed the same day.The yard is always left in tip top shape. I believe we have had North Shore Tree Service come biannually for the past 15 years or more.
Description of Work: North Shore Tree Service is our "go to" tree service business. Rick and his crew have been trimming our trees for many years and we wouldn't consider any one else.

Based upon prior reports on Angie's List, I got three estimates for the work. The other two companies made appointments with me and we walked through the yard together, this one came over after I left a message on his voicemail at some point when I was not home. He then called me and gave me an estimate over the phone of the things I wanted done and his price included grinding out the two stumps of the box elders. I called him back and told him I didn't need them ground out because they were on the property line, I would not trip over them or plant another tree where they were....they could just be cut flat. He called back and gave me a different price. I called back and said good, that sounds good, let me know the approximate date of when you could do it. He gave me 'about a week out'. As promised, a week later I got a call asking if a certain day was good, and I said it was. I was a little leery about having them come out without a WRITTEN estimate, but these guys had gotten some good reports. The day they came out they brought an ARMY of guys. My neighbors were laughing because they could have cut down the trees in the whole neighborhood with the number of guys they brought. Some of them eventually left, I guess, because lo and behold, they asked for permission to use a bucket truck in the back yard instead of climbing....a truck through that little space? Go ahead, I said. Once they figured out how to get a truck in the yard they didn't need half the other guys who were climbers, I guess. Anyway, they had one truck attached to the wood chipper, one for the big logs, two bucket trucks and a 'taskmaster' (which is a little mini bulldozer-like thing that they carried all the stumps from the back to the front so they could get rid of them). They also brought a bunch of plywood to run the truck over so they wouldn't kill the grass. I think my neighbor might have had a heart attack with that big truck backing out but they didn't hit anything!!So, the head guy (Rick, who I presume is the arborist) came by to tell the crew chief what to do as far as pruning. Then he left. The crew trimmed the front ash trees really nice. There are a couple of branches that look iffy to me, wondering why they left them, but we shall see when they leaf out how they look. Then the same guy went up in the bucket truck in the back to get all the high branches off the big bad box elders, and they had a lot of guys on the ground doing the cleanup work and the stump removal. The long and the short of it is that the extra couple of hundred bucks that I saved going with them over Hoppe probably is because they weren't as careful as they could have been when 'dropping' parts of the trees in the back yard. They didn't hit the house or the garage or anything like that, but they did drop stuff in the neighbor's yard and there are some big divots in my back yard where the big logs fell, and I know that some companies train their people to not do it that way, but these guys lived dangerously. None wore hardhats or safety glasses. Luckily as a single parent with two young boys and a dog I am not all that particular about it since until NOW I haven't been able to grow much grass back there because those trees blocked all the sun. Now, I can fix the divots and grow grass. Some people might care more than I do, is all I am saying. They also cut some old stumps flat for me and chopped off a neighbor's tree branch for him that had broken in the snowstorm, and they cleaned up the yard wonderfully. All of this in about 5 hours. Amazing.I would recommend them. I

Cost for tree removal was discounted for service done during slower winter months. They had to come back a second time to re-grind the stump. Part of the fence had to be removed in order to get truck in back yard and, as a result, the fence took a bit of a beating. They put the fence back together as best as possible and it is an older fence so expectations were low. A branch ended up breaking a small square in a garage window, but they covered the cost to fix it without question. The cost from North Shore was $300-800 cheaper than several other quotes we had and we felt quality of end result was just as good. The crew was easy to work with and always responsive to questions. The yard job was completed as requested, but realized this summer that they did not actually remove the wood that was buried below the ground. That has created problems with growing grass! Grass came in great and was the envy of the block. However, only half of the grass re-sprouted this Spring and we ended up having to reseed A LOT. Makes me wonder a bit about the annual vs. perennial blend of the seed that was used and in retrospect, that question should have been asked. That said, they landscaping is not necessarily their primary expertise and we got what we paid for and was satisfied with end result.
Description of Work: Removed a large (2-3 ft diameter) maple tree from backyard in December 09. Ground out stump. Cost was about $1800. We then hired them to till yard, re-grade the yard, remove a wooden raised flower bed in backyard, and re-seed. Cost was about $1000.
