JJB Home Improvements LLC

Masonry, Stucco, General Remodeling,

About us

Our company began in 1994 with a simple idea: provide our community with a trustworthy partner in home improvements. We had seen too many neighbors, friends and family members give their trust, time and money to "fly-by-night" contractors who let them down, performed substandard work or even left town with their hard-earned money. After working in the trades for years Jeff Bartelt saw that, even in the best companies he'd worked for, there was a lack of attention to detail and often the simplest solution was overlooked in favor of sales. He saw a need in the local market for someone who would put the customer's best interest at the heart of every decision, and so JJB Home Improvements was founded. That's still our philosophy today. We know you love your home. Something drew you to it and even if it was only a choice of convenience, your home is special to you. We want to help you make it the best it's ever been, so you can enjoy it now, save money on energy and future repairs, and retain the highest possible resale value for when the time comes. We have made a long-term commitment to the Greater Milwaukee community and we stand behind our work. We look forward to serving you! Uses only properly vetted and certified subs. Extra charge for after-hours service. Additional contact - Joe Bartelt.

It pays to have an expierenced crew especially with this job. Originally this job started as outdoor stucco repair but turned into a much bigger job when most of wood behind the stucco was found to be rotten. Jeff and his crew explained what needed to be done and carried out the job very well. The crew was professional and made the room look new. They cleaned up and stayed in good communication throughout the entire job. I cant say enough. I would and will hire them again.
Description of Work: Jeff and his crew repaired stucco, repaired chimney and reconstructed an interior wall along with a wall fix in the bathroom.

Jeff and Ann are great to work with. Down to earth, responsive, fair. Asked for an estimate on each job, received each promptly. Work was completed within 5 days of estimate receipt for each job. Quality of work was very good. We will be using them in the future for our handyman, painting, etc. Great folks to do business with.

I sold my house and per, the contract, needed to do some minor carpentry work and some fairly extensive masonry work before the sale could close. Jeff and his crew were able to complete the job within a very tight time frame to the satisfaction of the building inspector, myself and the buyers. I don't know what I would have done without Jeff and his crew. Over the 7 years they did work for me, (new roof, new garage, cement work, taking out trees, fixed an ice dam, restuccoed an inside wall, etc.) they were always upfront, honest, ontime, within budget and very easy to deal with. I will miss working with Jeff, Ann and the rest of the crew. They deserve A+'s in my book in every category. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Jeff! I
Description of Work: I needed extensive masonry work and a few small carpentry fixes to complete the sale of my house, the last time I called Jeff. However, over the last 7 years, he put a new roof on my house, a new chimney liner, a new garage, cement work and a host of other miscellaneous items.

The roof looks great. Jeff and the guys were extremely professional and friendly. In addition to doing an excellent job, there were several 'extras' thrown in that we appreciated very much. They showed us shingle samples before getting started, and gave good advice about color and style. They told us about a rebate opportunity that could save us a few thousand dollars - there was no way we would have discovered this on our own. Also, they were extremely careful about cleaning up, sweeping several times and running a large magnet over our yard and driveway to ensure they picked up all the old nails. We'll definitely call these guys again for other jobs.

Jeff knows his stuff. He came over to look at my roof and he quickly decided what needed to be done to improve the ventilation in my attic. He then spent another 20 minutes explaining how I could help my ice dam problem by adding insulation. He explained exactly how to do it, what to be careful of, and he answered all of my questions. JJB emailed me a quote a couple of days later and the work was completed in a week. Everything was cleaned up and I was very comfortable with Jeff around my house. I think the price was fair and the professionalism superior.

Friday night at 7:00 rain started pouring in my closet, and continued to do so for hours, until the ceiling fell. After calling many roofers on Friday and Saturday with no results, I tried JJB. Jeff came out in one hour, repaired the hole, and recommended some helpful "anti-racoon" measures. I was very pleased with his responsiveness, his professionalism and friendly demeanor.

I had a couple of shingles come loose during a wind storm. I thought about crawling up there myself but we have a tall house and I didn''t see myself safely making the move from the ladder to the roof and back again. I found JJB on Angies list and gave them a call. They said it would cost $250 which I thought was expensive for a couple of shingles. I hesitated and started to rethink going up there myself. She explained that they would have to load the ladders on the truck drive here, do the job, drive back and unload. For that amount of labor, $250 wasn't really that much. Fair enough, I said O.K. I don't remember making an appointment, Jeff just showed up on a Saturday when I was up on the ladder installing gable vents. What a great guy. He was friendly, energetic and helpful. I explained to him why I didn't want to climb up on the roof and he gave me some tips on ladder safety. He asked me what I was working on and gave me some tips on installing the vents. He repaired the loose shingles, inspected the roof and and found some cracks to seal. And as long as he was up there, he cleaned the gutters. From end to end it was an great experience well worth the $250. It's a good feeling knowing a contractor I can trust.

They came when they said they would and did the estimate and then sent a proposal and we used them to get the work done. They were personable, on time and completed the work as promised. We spent about $475 on that work and we thought that was a reasonable price. We may use him next year to have some more work done. They came when they said and followed through. The person that did the work was involved in another job, but his office called us and said that if he was a little late that he was finishing of that job and that he would be on his way. We liked that because after Christmas we had our rugs cleaned and they were 2 hours late and did not even call, but we were calling them. They were very professional and the office was also very professional in talking to us and emailing the quote.

They were extremely professional, but also expensive. It was about $2000 more than the company I went with and I think the reason is because he kept harping on his brand name shingles that he uses. I don't care about brand names, I just want them to last 30 years. They also gave me options, they told me two different ways and their prices. They were listening a little better than the competition because I was undecided. They did seem to be ahead in professionalism and customer service, too.

Response from JJB Home Improvements LLC
After years of installing quality shingles for our valued clients, we know there is a vast difference in products claiming to be 30-year or even 40-year shingles. We have seen numerous homeowners go with another, cheaper roofer and later hire us to tear off and replace their new roof that failed. We don't install shingles simply because they're brand name shingles. The shingles that failed were also brand name shingles, so it isn't the name, but rather the quality and proven history of the product. Some of the failed products were warrantied and the replacement cost was covered by the manufacturer, but others had to be paid for out of the homeowners' pocket. Even if the replacement cost was covered, we hate to see anyone bear the inconvenience of having their roof replaced twice in a couple of years. It's hard work to install a roof and we take satisfaction in products that are worthy of our good workmanship. That's why we choose to install products we stand by, because our clients deserve a product that lives up to its promises.

Jeff is very prompt and supervises his help well. Small adjustments are catered to very efficiently. His pricing is rather high but, WOW!, his quality is outstanding, not to mention his professionalism. You definitely get what you pay for with JJB Home Improvements. One thing I might add, his attitude is business is business even with a Gay household!
Description of Work: Mother-In-Law suite was extensively decayed because of neglect from my elderly landlady, whom I purchased this home from and is now deceased. Work entailed complete roof strip-down and repair/replace of rotten wood, new architectural shingles, new cement-board siding, and painting. I also used Jeff Bartelt's services for other projects like, repair of plaster stucco and subsequent repainting of all stucco surfaces at the apexs of the roofline, and reconstruction of a sidedoor awning, as required for building codes.

We are writing this report after the very heavy rainfall that occured recently. There have been a few heavy rains since the trench drain was installed, but the rain last week was a big test for the new drainage system. The side of the basement we would expect to have water come inside was dry! In fact we had a little water come in our basement on the opposite side of the house, which is not the "bad" side. So, we know that without the trench drain we would have had water on what was the side of the house more prone to getting water in the basement. Our "bad" side is now our dry side! The trench drain has helped us relax when it rains heavily. We want to add that Jeff is a very friendly, professional person, who is a pleasure to work with. I am so happy with the trench drain that I called him to work on improving the drainage on the other side of the house. I left a message, and he called me back a few hours later to set up an appointment for a few days later. He showed up on time, and was generous with his time in discussing the issues and options for the next project. I hope to work with Jeff again, and recommend him highly.
Description of Work: We have experienced water in the basement and decided to take action to stop water coming in. Our neighbor's property is up high and water comes from that property into that side of our house. JJB Home Improvements helped us prevent water from coming into our basement when they installed a trench drain along the side of our house, across the yard, under the driveway, and to the ditch where the water is released. The job entailed digging a deep trench that was carefully pitched so water would run away from the house. There is a gravel bed for the perforated pvc pipe, a mesh "sock" over the pipe to prevent dirt from getting in the pipe, and more gravel on top of the pipe. The sod was carefully replaced.

Jeff is amiable and seems to know what he is talking about -- and promised that he and his crew could do all the work we requested. He does not do the work, however. His crew of helpers were very friendly and hard working -- but were pretty much out of their element. The steps they put in are sloppy (to put it gently), the door knobs on the door they replaced were put in backwards, and the door was put in very sloppily. I just wish that Jeff had said the work that we requested was not something he -- or his crew -- could do. We called several times to get the newly hung door fixed, with no luck.
Description of Work: We had new sidewalks put in on the side of the house, to help drain water away from the house. We had new steps put in from the sidewalk up to our yard. We had a storm door replaced with an existing door from within our house.

This project was completed at the end of June, 2008. We met with this client, as we always do, when work was completed. They indicated that they were happy with everything. During the project, we had gone back several times to work on the door trim, until they told us they were happy with it. The doorknobs, which were the wrong type, were supplied by the homeowner, and were installed backwards because that was the only way they'd go in. We'd explained the type of doorknobs needed, and we would still be happy to go back and change those out for them, if they would get the proper kind and let us know. It's unfortunate that they feel they called "several times to get the newly hung door fixed and had no luck". As explained, we did on several occasions make adjustments to the door trim, prior to closing out the job. We then met with them, they expressed satisfaction, and have paid in full.
