Our company began in 1994 with a simple idea: provide our community with a trustworthy partner in home improvements. We had seen too many neighbors, friends and family members give their trust, time and money to "fly-by-night" contractors who let them down, performed substandard work or even left town with their hard-earned money. After working in the trades for years Jeff Bartelt saw that, even in the best companies he'd worked for, there was a lack of attention to detail and often the simplest solution was overlooked in favor of sales. He saw a need in the local market for someone who would put the customer's best interest at the heart of every decision, and so JJB Home Improvements was founded. That's still our philosophy today. We know you love your home. Something drew you to it and even if it was only a choice of convenience, your home is special to you. We want to help you make it the best it's ever been, so you can enjoy it now, save money on energy and future repairs, and retain the highest possible resale value for when the time comes. We have made a long-term commitment to the Greater Milwaukee community and we stand behind our work. We look forward to serving you! Uses only properly vetted and certified subs. Extra charge for after-hours service. Additional contact - Joe Bartelt.

Working with JJB was a great experience! Our inquiry was replied to promptly with Jeff coming out for an estimate two days later. He walked the house with us and explained which cracks were a caulk job and which ones required more attention. The estimate came next day and work started a few days later. Jeff did an excellent job matching our original stucco pattern and spent time discussing repairs with us at the end of each day. He also provided us with instructions on how to caulk future cracks and when to prime and paint. We would definitely work with JJB again! They were professional, prompt, reasonable, and provided us with quality work.
Description of Work: Stucco repair on a two story 100 year old home.
We used JJB Home Improvements to replace 2 structural entry posts. This project also required removing and re-laying brick where the posts were anchored in the half walls. This project was very frustrating as it was impossible to diagnose exactly what was causing the post erosion without removing brick and opening up the soffit. We talked with many, many engineers and contractors and received many different point of views/recommendations. JJB was the only company that: 1) correctly diagnosed the issue before taking down the brick wall or soffit, 2) thoughtfully broke down and priced the bid into individual steps depending upon what they might find when the soffit/wall was revealed, 3) was capable/expert in doing ALL necessary repairs - - masonry, carpentry, concrete, structural. JJB’s finishing work was excellent, and it’s next to impossible to determine where the old portion of the wall stops and the new wall begins. We could always get a hold of JJB when we needed to discuss the project, and never had to wait to hear back from them. They treated this project as if it was their own home. We would (and will) use JJB over and over again in the future. Highly recommend.

I loved JJB personnel. They were careful, courteous, and meticulous. The problem is, we told them that our highest priority was figuring out what was causing the two leaks and fixing them. We weren't totally convinced they had investigated one of the leaks enough before they recommended a fix (which involved $3,400 worth of chimney work), so we asked to have a guarantee added to the contract that the leak would be fixed. We were happy with the work, but the leak continued. We asked them out to fix it again, and they did some caulking, I believe. It still leaked, so we asked them back again. This time, they decided something else "might" be the problem and estimated another $14,000 to fix it. We don't have $14,000 anymore, we're not convinced that those "repairs" will fix it either, and we still have one of the two leaks we asked JJB to fix. I liked their work and them, but that huge fail that I now don't know how to cure is a big stopper.
Description of Work: We hired JJB to do several backed-up maintenance/repair tasks. We had two leaks -- one near a kitchen vent, the other near a chimney. We also wanted to repair wood trim around the house and then paint that trim and other parts of the external house. Finally, we wanted repairs and painting of the ceilings where the leaks had been.

I contacted JJB on Monday, and they were able to schedule my job that Thursday. They explained what was possible, what to expect, and warned about the potential damage to the plaster above the work site. The basement was left as clean as (or maybe cleaner than) it was when they arrived. In the five months since the repair, I haven't seen any signs of further deterioration or sagging. I think $2850 seems a bit steep for a few hours' work, but another contractor quoted me $4000, so maybe I'm just a cheapskate. Either way, the peace of mind knowing that the job was done right, with a guarantee, is worth it to me.

This was a very expensive job but their estimate was real close to the other two received. However, the work was superior. The porch and garage had been re-roofed about 15 years ago, but were in bad shape. The main roof was about 45 years old (unnoticed until there were problems) and the chimneys had probably never been touched. The whole crew worked hard every day for about a week and cleaned up all their equipment daily. They built a huge scaffolding to reach one chimney by the neighboring house -- it was a structural masterpiece itself.
Description of Work: Joe and his crew did a tear-off and entirely new roof on house and garage, rebuilt two chimneys and tuckpointed bricks on porch and foundation of house. It was a huge challenging job complicated by only about 6 feet between the neighboring house and even less on the alley side. It's a wonderful 100 year old east side house of which they took great care and did a magnificent job. Whole crew was great and worked hard til late in the day. Absolutely recommend JJB, especially to anyone who wants to be sure an old house gets great care.

Our original chimney project could not be executed because of structural problems with the chimney. JJB was helpful in advising on alternatives and suggesting (at my request) other vendors to help us. the work that was done needed to be done in multiple steps and JJB was prompt and professional. It was always easy to reach Joe Bartelt. If not immediately available he responded promptly. Would recommend JJB.

We asked Jeff for a quote on a small job, some cutting but not much wall space. He was very professional, courteous and friendly when he came over to review the job. However, I had to call him to get the quote and he came in at $2750!!! We hired another painter to do the same job for $250, less than a tenth of his quote! I don't mind when a contractor says they don't want the job -- in a nice way of course -- but to grossly overbid is just an insult to the customer.

Hello everyone! Joe Bartelt; project manager, here! I am disappointed someone felt so poorly about our proposal system they felt they had to write a review without even attempting to clarify anything with me first. There was obviously a miscommunication somewhere, but the job we looked at would have required over $250 of materials to complete, let alone labor and overhead. In addition saying something like this is the equivalent of saying I bought a brand new Kia Rio for $14,000 but the guy at the Mercedes dealership wanted $120,000 for a new S-class. They're both cars right? What a ripe off!!!! It's just silly and unfair. I would really like to know if the "painter" they hired has his dwelling contractor license AND qualifier to do work in WI. Is he insured? Would his insurance cover a total loss on a home in this neighborhood? Does he hold his lead-safe renovator certificate (which you need in WI to do painting work on homes over 20 years old)? Does he pay taxes? Or was it a cash job? Almost $900 of our $2,750 proposal would go straight to taxes. If you get a quote from a contractor that doesn't pay their's you can see how it would be very easy to underbid someone else. Lastly this client needed it done quickly and being months out on our schedule there was obviously a small rush-fee, like you pay UPS when you absolutely need something done next week. I am truly sorry they were not happy with our price but in no way intended to be disrespectful in anyway. I understand when people are occasionally shocked by the price of having a quality company that follows all proper legal and financial channels do work for them. But to write a poor review before clarifying or allowing us time to actually draft a proposal is both unfair and extremely hurtful. We do everything possible to provide competitive bids and high quality work. I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Someone from JJB came out and wrote up an estimate. The estimate was to repair a small section of the wall. The estimate was for $500 which included the repair and repainting (I would supply the paint). When Jeff Bartelt came out to do the repair, he noticed that the damage was more extensive. We talked by phone and he explained that there was unseen damage below the surface that needed to be repaired. He gave me a new quote. We discussed the work and moved forward on a time and materials basis. Jeff sent pictures to me of all the damage (which was quite extensive but fairly isolated). Jeff repaired the damage and repainted the area. If I didn't know that exterior wall had been damaged, I would never know about it now. He did excellent work and cleaned up the area when he left. Jeff was early to contact, reasonable to work with, and showed up within the estimate timeframe (which was about 1.5 weeks after I awarded his company the business) Ann Bartelt has originally told me two weeks and they beat that estimate. Any correspondence with Ann Bartelt via email was responded to on a very timely basis. It was a pleasure working with these folks.
Description of Work: I had a roof problem where the building did not install flashing correctly between the roofline and the gutter. Water was flowing behind the gutter system and down the wall of the outside. The flowing water was eroding the hardee plank and saturating the particle board and the tyvek house wrap.

The roof area above our attached garage was leaking badly whenever it would rain or snow would melt. Because there was a wooden deck installed above the rubber roof, it was not possible to determine the source of the leak. After several attempts at patching things, we started to contact contractors to find out what was needed to fix the problem. I called JJB after locating them on an Angie's List search. We arranged for Jeff to stop by to look at the problems and provide an estimate. He stopped by, right on schedule, and looked at the problems, took measurements, and explained solutions. It became clear that the leak was being caused by the poorly installed rubber roof (under the wooden deck) as well as a failing second-floor stucco wall that abutted the roof of the garage. Because of the cost, we were not able to have the work done at the time of the estimate (April/May). When we were ready to have the work done, I had a few additional questions about the project and talked to Jeff. He suggested some different materials for the wall and modified the original proposal with the new costs. We approved the proposal and Jeff or Ann got back to us right away to let us know the timeline for the work to be done. The work started right on schedule and either Jeff, Ann, or the project manager, Joe, would check in with us to let us know how the work was proceeding and any issues. Some extra work was required due to water damage and the improperly-installed roof materials. When this came up, Joe explained exactly what would be needed, the charges, how they would be estimated, and all other details. We approved the additional costs and all of the changes were well-documented so we never felt like we were in the dark about the revised costs. When the additional work was complete, Joe let us know and the originally-proposed work continued. All of the work was done carefully with close attention to detail. We are very happy with how things turned out and, after a few rain storms, we have not had any further leaks. We highly recommend JJB.

First, JJB Home Improvement, Ann and Jeff, are the most responsive service providers I have ever worked with. Ann handles the appointments/office side of the business and Jeff handles the estimating/work side of the business. They are both very professional and responsive to questions and helping us understand the scope of the work that was needed at our house. I had a very difficult time finding someone to complete stucco repair, but when Jeff came out to discuss our job, he proved to be very knowledgeable. When we were deciding which of the bids to go with, we put a lot of credence on the fact that Jeff really knew his stuff. When we had questions about the work as it was progressing, Jeff responded in a timely manner-both via phone and e-mail. Every time I left a message with Ann, I received a response with the day. This was truly the best part of working with JJB. I will recommend them to others who need this type of work.

It seems that (members name removed) believed the arrangement was open-ended and we would return, to repair any leaks that occurred, indefinitely. We contracted to repair a specific leak, which we did and also returned, making a good faith gesture, multiple times to repair various other leaks in a faulty roof (installed by others).

Jeff and Ann provided very good communication and responsiveness. Jeff was friendly and knowledgeable in person. He grasped quickly what we were trying to accomplish in terms of time, quality and costs, and made a number of good suggestions. Every firm we interviewed was very busy and the two who submitted proposals were very close. JJB's schedule was slightly later, and their price was slightly higher so we went with the other firm. But the next time around the situation could be reversed and we would be just as happy. I was impressed that Jeff followed up with a debriefing to be sure he didn't miss something. Very professional.

It's always a pleasure to work with JJB. They're top-skilled at the work they undertake, and they're extremely courteous, flexible, honest, and accurate in their estimate of how long a job will take. They help find less-expensive solutions if there are any--I always feel like they're on my side in keeping costs down--and help prioritize projects. I've worked with other A-list vendors before for carpentry and related work, but none are as headache free as JJB.
Description of Work: Repaired damaged stucco and wooden trim, tuck pointing on chimney, and a range of miscellaneous repairs on the exterior of the house, and some plaster repair indoors.
We hired Jeff in fall 2013 to do some stucco repair on our chimney, and based on the excellence of that work (timeliness, quality, professionalism of crew, responsiveness), we hired JJB to do our kitchen remodeling this past January. Again, Jeff and his crew, as well as the subcontractors, were professional, considerate, reliable, and did excellent work. We have four indoor cats and everyone was very attentive to keep them from getting outside. Jeff was in constant contact with us and met whenever we needed. All kitchen remodels are disruptive, but this went much more smoothly than I had envisioned. One minor mistake was taken care of immediately and to our complete satisfaction (actually worked out better, in fact). We will be using JJB again in 2015 to do plaster work in the dining room and hallway.
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel: including cabinets, tile, gas, electric and plumbing, painting.
They repaired or replaced several fascia boards and primed them. They also put aluminum caps on all the rafter tails, some of which were badly damaged. Everything looked almost like new when they were done. Very happy with the results!

I'd used JJB Home Improvements for several other projects in the past so I already had a great deal of confidence in the company and crew. (I call Jeff "my contractor" when talking to others about my 'projects'.) That said, I still got several other estimates and JJB's price was very competative. So fair price and confidence wins every time. Jeff takes the time to explain things and neither he nor Joe minded answering all my questions. The crew was here when they said they'd be, they worked hard the whole time they were here, and cleaned up each evening before going home. We're very pleased with the workmanship and the interior finish work on the windows is superior.
