JJB Home Improvements LLC

Masonry, Stucco, General Remodeling,

About us

Our company began in 1994 with a simple idea: provide our community with a trustworthy partner in home improvements. We had seen too many neighbors, friends and family members give their trust, time and money to "fly-by-night" contractors who let them down, performed substandard work or even left town with their hard-earned money. After working in the trades for years Jeff Bartelt saw that, even in the best companies he'd worked for, there was a lack of attention to detail and often the simplest solution was overlooked in favor of sales. He saw a need in the local market for someone who would put the customer's best interest at the heart of every decision, and so JJB Home Improvements was founded. That's still our philosophy today. We know you love your home. Something drew you to it and even if it was only a choice of convenience, your home is special to you. We want to help you make it the best it's ever been, so you can enjoy it now, save money on energy and future repairs, and retain the highest possible resale value for when the time comes. We have made a long-term commitment to the Greater Milwaukee community and we stand behind our work. We look forward to serving you! Uses only properly vetted and certified subs. Extra charge for after-hours service. Additional contact - Joe Bartelt.

The end product was beautiful, original, and exactly what we wanted, at about half the cost of what we had been quoted by the original remodeler! Also it is worth noting that it really was a hard job with all of the crew spending long days in the basement with that sandblaster. Everything was left clean and tidy every night, and the quality of the workmanship was excellent. The only regret was that we didn't go with Jeff from the beginning.
Description of Work: I had used Jeff previously to replace our roof. When we came to completely remodeling our basement we had initially worked with a remodeling company who were a complete misery to deal with would allow very little input from us, wanted to work as a kit, massively overpriced! After firing them I decided to go back to JJB because it had been such a pleasant experience working with them before. Jeff immediately was enthusiastic about the project and had great suggestions. He sandblasted the entire interior of the basement to bring back the beautiful Lannon sandstone used in the original construction, replaced the entire ceiling, windows and doors, and installed drywall. In addition, he gave advice regarding where we could cut costs and what we could do ourselves to save money. He also gave us links to other tradesmen he trusted. He even left us tools that we could use to lay a floor. What a great guy! An absolute delight to deal with.

MAYBE THIS MEMBER HAS MISTAKEN US FOR ANOTHER COMPANY SHE CALLED. SHE DID CALL US MAY 7TH, WE RETURNED HER CALL, HAD AN APPOINTMENT WITH HER THURSDAY, MAY 15TH (JEFF BARTELT CAME OUT AND MET WITH HER AT HER HOME) AND GAVE HER A VERBAL QUOTE AT THAT TIME, WHICH SHE PROMPTLY DECLINED. WE ASKED HER TO CONTACT US IF SHE CHANGED HER MIND AND WANTED A FORMAL WRITTEN PROPOSAL. WE HAVE HAD NO FURTHER RESPONSE FROM HER. PLEASE REMOVE THIS REPORT AS IT IS NOT ACCURATE/DOES NOT PERTAIN TO OUR COMPANY. THANK YOU!

These are excellent folks to work with. Jeff expertly explains the work and the quote is thorough and precise. He is available to understand any detail - we learned a lot about drainage and other issues affecting it. His workers are knowledgeable and friendly. They always showed up exactly when they said they would.
Description of Work: Worked with us to understand our drainage issues and then installed drain tile and dry well along north side of house.

About a week prior to the scheduled work, I had asked for a delay - due to some ceiling work that I needed to perform prior to roof installation - it was graciously accepted from JJB. The rescheduled date was moved back a couple of days due to rain. The work was anticipated to be three or four days, and it was completed on the fourth day with one day off due to rain. A few anticipated "extras" were added after some rotten wood was discovered, the extra price for these repairs was well within acceptable. The employees were friendly, (very) clean and helpful in describing the progress. A roofing project is never an expense or project to look forward to, but I have no regrets in choosing JJB, and I'm very satisfied with the work performed.
Description of Work: We had a low slope second story roof finished with shingles. When we purchase our house four years ago, the home inspector told us that a rubber membrane roof would be more appropriate. After the harsh winter, the roof was in dire need of replacement. Jeff Bartelt and his crew removed all existing roofing, replaced some rotten wood, added and replaced some insulation and fixed and replace some gutters. JJB Home Improvements estimate came in the middle of three we had requested, they were chosen to perform the work based on the middle price as well as the time he spent with me on the estimate. Their high marks from Angie's list was also an important factor.

It was our first roof replacement so it was a learning experience. Jeff and his wife were very responsive to e-mail questions and phone calls. We experienced some leaking due to rain during installation. It was a Saturday night and Jeff sent his foreman over to address the problem immediately. Clean up was remarkable.

I was very pleased with their work. Jeff came out to do the quote and was very good at explaining what was needed and the work they would perform. I liked that they used email to send out their quote/proposal. This made the communication easy. They were able to come out and do the job about two weeks after I accepted their proposal. The guys who did the actual work were quick, efficient and cleaned up the site afterwards. It took them about a half day to complete. We've had some very strong rains since they did the work and I haven't seen any water leaking in which is great. I thought the price was reasonable and I would definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: JJB replaced a piece of roof that is over a bay window (Water had been leaking into the house). I also had them replace some aluminum fascia on one of the roof lines. Below is an excerpt from their quote on the work that was performed. Roof Over Bay Windows, 1.) Remove existing layers of roofing down to wood sheathing. 2.) Inspect for damaged wood and sufficient insulation. Replace and install at our time and materials rate (see note below). 3.) Pitch new roof away from siding of house. 4.) Install hardboard insulation over pitched roof. 5.) Glue down a .060 mil rubber roof membrane to hardboard insulation. 6.) Secure ends under siding and along shingled roof area with aluminum termination bar and pan head screws. 7.) $450.00 for replacement of fascia on the lower roof-line on the back of the house, color: white. 8.) Clean up and remove all debris from job site.) 9.) Work includes 2-year guarantee on materials and workmanship. Note: Any necessary carpentry repair/replacement of wood or insulation installed will be performed, with owners approval at our time and materials rate of $55.00 per work hour plus the cost of materials.

I called JJB to get a second estimate for a garage roof repair. After inspecting the roof, he told me that even though they could do the work, the repairs were easy enough for me to do. He told me what had to be done and suggested how I should do it. On his way home, he called back with additional suggestions for the repair. It was great to work with someone that was honest and not willing to take advantage of us. I think his honesty devises the 'A'.
Description of Work: I had JJB Home Improvements come out and give us an estimate for roof repair. They came and inspected the roof and said the repairs could easily be done by myself. They could do them, if I wanted them to do the repair, but they told me how and what needed to be done. No pressure, no sales pitch, just great service.

This was an exceptionally positive experience from start to finish. We had obtained three quotes all from companies with high ratings on the list. Quotes ranged from mid 20K to 50K! We went with JJB because they were enthusiastic to take on this large job, which was not the case with the other companies. JJB were highly efficient from the get-go and everyone worked extremely hard, even in scorching temperatures in mid-summer. They left the place immaculate every evening and ensured that the garden surrounding the house was well protected with boarding. Everyone was friendly and were a delight to interact with. Even more importantly, everyone on the project took great pride in their work, and we are delighted with the finished product.

I am getting compliments from friends and neighbors. They gave expert advice on color to compliment the exterior of the house. They are known for their quality, and that's why I chose them after comparing.
Description of Work: Complete tear off of 2 layers, removed gutters and replaced, installed 2 new lead vent flashing covers for plumbing vent pipes, 1 new exhaust cover for the kitchen, new D-edge along rake of roof, installed 6 foot ice and water shield along all gutters and in the valleys. Jeff estimated a roofing job and this chimney job for us. His roofing bid was somewhat higher than two others, but the chimney bid was fair and Jeff had impressed me with his customer-oriented approach and professional competence. He spent a considerable amount of time describing the roof reinforcements they would do along with the process for applying the stone and flashing. He also worked with me on the chimney cap detail so that it looked just like a full-masonry chimney. He was able to make an attractive poured concrete cap (like a full-masonry chimney has) without exceeding the weight bearing capacity of the reinforced roof. Soon after we accepted the quote, Jeff called with info on where we could select the stone veneer to be used. He and his crew of two arrived on time on the first workday. Due to threatening rain they had to skip a day, but the job was done in a timely manner. It looks beautiful, is water tight and should be maintenance free for decades.

Jeff was in regular contact with us during the entire process. The lentils were done beautifully. Our home was built in 1928 of lannon stone and to remove and replace existing masonry is an art...they are craftsmen. We had designed the shape of our patio and Jeff built it to our specifications. He let us know when our roof would be started and stayed in contact with us regarding when his crew would or would not be working. His crew were very cordial, courteous and professional; they were on the job when we were told they would be there and they went about their work with patience and skill. When Jeff and his crew discovered problems with any installation, he communicated our options clearly and fully. Though we paid more for our roof than we had anticipated because it required the installation of a new subroof, Jeff was very understanding and gave us the option of paying the balance due nearly 2 months after all work had been completed.
Description of Work: Jeff and his crew began work on our home to replace existing lentils above the double windows on the north and south ends of our two-story home. They did excellent masonry work in a timely, efficient manner. Upon finding out that JJB Home Improvements, LLC also did cement work and roofing, we asked Jeff to quote on a new concrete patio in our back yard and inspect our roof because it had been leaking. We also asked Jeff to take pictures of the roof with our digital camera so that we would be able to work with the previous roofer to correct the problems. Jeff investigated and found that the previous contractor/roofer had incorrectly installed shingles on our home and took pictures that evidenced the faulty installation. After completing our lentils, Jeff and his crew installed a concrete patio for us and returned to tear off and install a new roof. We could not be happier with the finished work; the quality and manner in which they went about their work was exceptional.

Jeff is very knowledgeable and gave me a lot of good advice about my house. His crew came as promised every day, worked hard, and cleaned up well after they were done. The fan is silent, and the soffit vents blend in nicely. I am hopeful this will help keep my house cool in the summer. The guys cleaned the gutters well and not a piece of debris was left on my property. JJB also performed some tuckpointing and carpentry work around my house.
Description of Work: My attic space was poorly ventilated. Jeff, from JJB came over and suggested adding a solar powered fan to the roof, as well as adding a dozen soffit vents around the house, as well as cleaning my gutters and adding cheap but effective gutter guard snap-ins.

Jeff was able to give me a reasonable quote and his crew were very professional and worked hard over the course of this 6 day project, even putting in time on Saturday. They discovered several metal lentils that were rusted through and needed replacement which added an extra day to the project. JJB also performed some roofing, gutter, and carpentry work around my house. All work was done as expected, and the crew cleaned up the job site very well.
Description of Work: My lannon stone house (circa 1930) was in serious need of some tuckpointing, as a third of the mortar joints around the house needed attention.

I contacted Ann & Jeff regarding replacement windows; 4 regular size double-hung & 2 larger double-hung. Jeff came to measure & gave me a ball-park cost. After he'd left, I realized that I hadn't been specific or clear on what I was really looking for. I called him back, & we again discussed what I was looking for. I received a proposal within a couple of days, & Ann/Jeff explained that the window order was being placed right away & I'd get a start date when they were in. Jeff explained every single step along the way; he removed the window treatments, he covered anything that could be affected by dust (i.e. computer, TV, etc). He had to do outdoor work & walk in the snow-whenever he had to come in the house, he was extremely careful of our floors/rugs. His work was perfect. He even gave me tips on how to fill nail holes/prime/paint the windows & woodwork (I decided to have him do it). Phone calls & questions were answered promptly & completely.

Jeff, the owner, gave an estimate promptly. JJB had a lot of jobs ahead of ours, but they were careful to keep up updates. Rain forced some additional delays. When they were able to come they completed the job in a timely manner. The workmanship appears to be excellent. They took initiative to make the repair first rate. The two man crew was very hard working, eager to explain their work and to answer questions. The clean up was fine. It was an excellent experience overall.

Even though Jeff was more expensive than other bids, I hired him because he also does carpentry and a couple of exterior boards needed repair. However, throughout the process I felt that my job was a very low priority for him. It took a long time to get a bid from him and once I hired him, it took several weeks to get him to schedule the job. When he did finally show he had me sign a contract and promptly left without explaining that the two young men with him would be doing the work rather than him. Nor did he oversee their work. When the men "finished", several cracks remained and a board was unfinished but they said that's all Jeff had told them they had to do. When I got Jeff to come back a few days later, we argued a bit but then he agreed to finish the job. He or one of his workers returned another time and finished, though they left behind stuff that they should have carted away. The job was ultimately satisfactory but I could have lived without the aggravation.

Of all the people that I have found through Angie's List, this was one of the best experiences we had. We are in the process of selling our home, and they bent over backward to accommodate our needs. I only wish they would move to Vermont.
Description of Work: JJB replaced damaged stucco on our home and tuck pointed other areas. On initial inspection, they thought we also needed repairs on the flashing next to the stucco. When they did the work, they did not have to do the flashing work, and deducted that amount. I commented that they also did additional disappointing that was not quoted, so we called it even.
