I got them from a friend who had used them. Their prices were a lot less than the other people that we used, and they were amazing. It is this old guy and one of his sons.
Description of Work: We used H Froebel & Son Inc. They did some tuck pointing, and some repairs. They will be rebuilding our chimney, and remove the fireplace.

They told me they would begin at a certain date, but did not. I had to contact them to find out when they would begin the work. They made no effort to contact me. We had a signed contract for a set amount and the work done. They were supposed to fix my sidewalk and cut a step in my porch. I have a signed contract that stipulates they would do this work and do it for a set amount of money. After they started they decided they could not cut the step, did the bare minimum to fix the sidewalk and still charged me $65 more than we had agreed. The contract meant nothing to them. The hours billed were inflated and the craftsmanship was average at best. They treated me as if I were ignorant because I expected the contract to be fulfilled. There are 3/4 inch gaps in the brick line that could make someone trip. The facing on the steps are very rough. The work was poorly done.
Description of Work: I hired the provider to fix my sidewalk and cut a step in my porch.

Response from H Froebel & Son Inc
Owner had 3 options for his 30 year old brick walk and steps: new brick, stamped and colored concrete or tuck pointing. He chose the least expensive which was tuck pointing. He also was told he might get 3 years out of the tuck pointing. The base concrete is shifted and deteriorated, consequently the brick on surface have shifted. This can not be corrected without removal and replacement. Furthermore anything done in the masonry and concrete field can not be done when it rains. So certainly there would be delays in getting there. If this person does not understand the simplest of things, he apparently does not, then there is no sense to further discussion.

The project involved some major excavation, repair and replacement on a 100 year old brick house, porch, cement stairs and sidewalk. Looks like brand new and I'm not sure you can tell there was any work done - looks great! The crew had to apply a bit of creativity, had good problem solving skills. Clearly had a lot of experience to leverage. I really just had to listen and nod my head and they took care of the rest. Thanks Kurt!

Both on the original inspection and the later control-of-damper call, Kurt was able to respond within a day. His experience allayed concerns raised by the home inspector, and his creative solution for controlling the damper operation was inspired.
Description of Work: In preparing this property for sale, a number of questions regarding the operation of the flue need clarification. Kurt addressed each issue, resolving what could have been a difficult situation by providing an in-depth explanation of his findings, yet in plain English that was easy to understand. Later he crafted a custom solution to control & simplify the damper operation, satisfying buyers' concerns.

I was pleased with their responsiveness - they provided one quote for some brick repair just based on a photo I sent, which was very helpful. They also then came out to see my garage and back patio, once I decided to add on to the project. I feel their pricing was fair and quite competitive. The method they described for fixing my brickwork was a very sound and long-term solution. Their proposal was short and to the point. I prefer a little more technical detail, but after talking to Kurt, I am comfortable with his approach and that the job will be done right. He was fine with adding more detail to the proposal, per my comfort level. I had used this company once before for fixing a small hole in my cream city brick wall after a remodel. They did a nice job, including matching as best as possible my cream city brick and mortar which had been sandblasted and had a unique color and texture. Kurt is a likable character, and I trust his judgement. He provides the estimates, and clearly is someone who has a deep level of personal experience in his trade, and takes pride in his work. I like dealing with firms like this - I would rather have Kurt come out and see what needs to be done and lay it out for me, than a suit and tie guy come out and provide an estimate for what I asked for (instead of what I really need). For those who prefer a slicker presentation, or a person with no mud on their boots to provide the estimate, look elsewhere, but for those like me, who like the craftsman with years of experience to not only provide the estimate, but oversee the work, AND provide some excellent practical insight, then Kurt is your man.
Description of Work: No services were performed yet, although I do intend on using them in the spring. I had them provide an estimate for some cream city brick repair work, which they responded quickly to with a good solution. Before I could start that repair, I decided to also have my garage floor replaced, so they came out to discuss that and provide an estimate for replacing the garage floor, and fixing a few other items as well. I fully intend to use this company in the spring for both of these jobs, as I did not get enough time before winter came to clean out the garage and make a few other repairs that needed to happen first.

They were absolutely horrendous. They did not deliver what they promised. They did not want to make good on it. They tried to put a lien on my house. They ruined a stone planter and then said they never did it. It was like dealing with the mob. Don't go near them - run as far as you can. It was a waist of money. Everything they did fell apart. They did not know what they were doing. It was like I brought them in off the street and told them to do the job. The whole thing was terrible. They were dishonest and threatening. They had unskilled work.

It went very well. The mason was answered all my questions completely. It is obvious they know what they are doing and are proud of the work they do.
Description of Work: The workers replaced 3 levels of brick on our chimney. They had to put up scaffolding and were very careful not to ruin any of the bushes in the area of the scaffolding. Once they replaced the brick they resealed the cap.

We had looked around several different places. On the side of their building they had all different kinds of concrete that they did. It was all laid out so that we could look at the different patterns, the different styles and the textures and we liked that. I think I checked the Better Business Bureau and they had better ratings. They had been in business for a long time for about 70 years or so. We had 3 estimates and they were in the middle; their price was reasonable. They did an excellent job. We used to have a step near the garage, but they changed that and made it one smooth thing which I appreciate. They did some things which would make it look aesthetically nice. We were very pleased with them and there were no problems. We had some shrubs in the front which we wanted to get rid of anyway. I told them that they can just get rid of those and so they removed them as well. They didn’t even charge anything for that. I would hire them back.

He came when I wasn’t home and had left an estimate in the mailbox in the front porch. It was an incomplete estimate, and I did not get to see the person as I wasn’t home. He was prompt and his price was fair, but the work was never done.

He's been in business a long time. He employed 3 mexicans to do the job. One spoke english and I wasn't totally pleased with the work. There wasn't the greatest communication and they hurried along. The price was reasonable. He came in on the low side of the estimate. I would recommend him to others, but keep in mind 2 out of 3 of the workers probably don't have enough training as they need.

We had had part of the job done by detour several years ago and they did a perfect job. At that time we didn't have enough money to do the whole sidewalk. When we saw that our neighbors were having a concrete job done by H Froebel, we had them come over and give us an estimate. The price was reasonable so we hired them. They did a very mediocre job. Although the drainage was corrected, the texture and the color of the concrete surface were visibly uneven. There was also significant space left between the sidewalk and the foundation. We asked them to correct their work, and received some resistance and some discourteous verbal responses. Eventually, to their credit, after about three calls, they filled in the space between the sidewalk and foundation. The color and texture patches, however, remain as a reminder that in the future we will not use or recommend their services.
Description of Work: H Froebel replaced part of our concrete sidewalk adjacent to our house, about 20 feet long by 4 feet wide, in order to make it drain away from the house rather than into the basement.

We did not use this vendor. The price was fair. I asked to be here when the estimate call was made so that I could understand what needed to be done. It couldn't be done. The first request for an estimate was lost. I called 3 times. Because of there Angie's grade I called back again. He remembered my name, apologized and sent someone right away. We simply went with another vendor due to thorough walk through and explanation of why we needed the work completed.

They gave a quote that addressed specifically the areas I mentioned to them on the phone. They prepared and sent the quote within a few days of when we talked. It was much less expensive than what the chimney companies had quoted for similar repairs. We eventually decided we did not need to fix the chimney at this point, but I would certainly keep H. Froebel in mind for when the time comes to have the work done.

The bid for this job was fair, their assessment of the extent of the repairs seemed accurate to me. They explained the project as it unfolded and completed the work in a timely fashion. The mason assigned went above the stated job to complete a small associated repair that was not readily noticed during the initial inspection of the job. I would recommend them to a family with an older home and perhaps some unusual requirements about their chimney.
