We're very happy with their work and their responsiveness. They are professional, they clean up after themselves, and they do quality work even if it takes a little longer. I have an older house and they specialize in restorations and maintenance of such buildings--they understand why I might want to keep an original door, for instance.

Overall the job went well. We would not hesitate to call Community Building and Restoration for an estimate on a future project.
Description of Work: We needed our front porch steps replaced. Community Building and Restoration removed the old steps, hauled away the debris and rebuilt a new set of porch steps that met the City of Milwaukee's code requirements and were approved by a City building inspector.

Their communication was very good. From the beginning we knew when they would come and what they would do when they came. We felt like that they really heard us when we told them what we wanted to do and our concerns. When they work was done, we got a really good explanation of what they did, what happened and if anything was different, why it was different. They did an excellent job. They had a professional attitude and professional communication. The price was really fair.
Description of Work: Community Building & Restoration rebuilt a small roof that goes over the bay window. They removed the old roof and built a new copper roof and also repaired the sidings and shingles around that about 2 years ago.

From initial contact to job completion, even when the weather got bad, they stayed on schedule, sometimes getting work done before we expected it.
Description of Work: Complete repair of damaged soffits, due to squirrel chewing and some rot. Also replaced gutters and extended roofing edge material. Very thorough, using best materials and making things look solid. Offered reasonable advice and explanations of the work. We ended up having them do both sides of the house, which went over our budget, but believe it was done right and will save us work in the future.

We have contracted with this company before (cost estimating and the remodel of second floor space to make a laundry center) so we were confident that we would have a good experience and we did. Because of allergy issues the crew brought themselves and materials through a second floor opening into the shell they constructed. Community workers are extremely hard working whether the owner/worker is on site or not. Respectful, pleasant and anxious-to-please workers, office manager and owner. Good communication and attention to details. Coordinated subs and inspections well. Quickly and appropriately resolved an issue with a sub. We left town for several extended periods with no problem. They will do whatever is necessary to keep the home clean including (I love this one) changing from outside shoes to inside ones at the door each time they enter. Everyone who sees the work is impressed. We love the space. We plan to use them for new windows in other areas of the home.
Description of Work: Constructed new second story dormer bathroom and a separate closet in second floor eave space. Using electric, plumbing, drywall, Solatube and tile subcontractors, Community's own carpenter, roofing and finish crew broke through the roof, constructed the shell of the room and finished it. The room is consistent with the 1913 features of the home. It contains a custom shower, toilet, sink, marble countertop, custom cabinetry, custom medicine chest, windows and a skylight. They installed a new hardwood floor in the closet. Worked on time and materials basis for an additional project, "epoxy restoration", which is the repair of outside trim to be consistent with historic practices.

They took over 3 months to get the estimate. They forgot about the bay window and the garage in the estimate. He was one hour late for the appointment. When he came in, he had to use the restroom, and directed him the gas station on the corner. He said that he didn't want to waste his time by coming back a second time. I gave him a list, and he automatically crossed off 3 items because they were "too small." I got the feeling that they didn't do restoration problems. So much time had elapsed, I had already contacted other companies.

MEMORY CAN BE FICKLE.WHERE THE MEMBER REMEMBERS ME CROSSING OUT ITEMS BECAUSE THEY WERE SMALL, MY RECOLLECTION IS THAT THEY WERE ITEMS THAT WE WERE NOT QUALIFIED TO PERFORM; WHERE THE CUSTOMER SAYS I DIDN'T WANT TO "WASTE TIME" COMING BACK, I WAS ATTEMPTING NOT TO PUT EXCESSIVE HOURS INTO A JOB THAT IT SEEMED LIKELY WE WOULD NOT GET ON ACCOUNT OF BUDGET (THOUGH I DID SPEND OVER AN HOUR WITH THE MEMBER DISCUSSING HER RESTORATION ISSUES AND SUGGESTING COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS). I COULD SPEND MY ENTIRE WORK-WEEK BIDDING JOBS, MANY OF WHICH MAY BE FOR CUSTOMERS WHO ARE ONLY FISHING FOR INFORMATION OR WHO HAVE UNREALISTIC BUDGET EXPECTATIONS. THEREFORE WE MUST SOMETIMES BEGIN BY GIVING SOME ROUGH PRICING, SOMETIMES ON A LIMITED SCOPE OF WORK, IN ORDER TO GAUGE THE CUSTOMER'S SERIOUSNESS. OTHERWISE I SIMPLY RUN OUT OF TIME. IF WE'RE IN THE BALLPARK, WE THEN WILL COMMIT MUCH MORE TIME.MY RECORDS INDICATE THAT WE CALLED AHEAD TO NOTE THAT WE WERE RUNNING LATE, AND THAT WE CERTAINLY DID NOT TAKE 3 MONTHS TO GET THE MEMBER THE PROPOSAL.AT COMMUNITY BUILDING AND RESTORATION, WE SPECIALIZE IN DIFFICULT AND UNIQUE HISTORICAL RESTORATION PROBLEMS, BIG AND SMALL. WE ARE A PREMIUM COMPANY, NOT A BUDGET COMPANY. WE PUT OUR NAME ON WORK THAT IS DONE CORRECTLY, NOT CHEAPLY. WE ARE FOR YOU IF YOU WANT THE HIGHEST QUALITY WORK AT A FAIR PRICE. I APOLOGIZE THAT WE ARE NOT A PERFECT FIT FOR ALL HOUSES AND OWNERS; BUT A DEGREE OF SPECIALIZATION IS A NECESSARY AND SMART BUSINESS PRACTICE.

We went through a long drawn out process to try and set up a time for an estimate so that my husband and I could both be home. The latest we could get would be 5:30 so we set that up. We rearranged our plans to be home for the appointment. I called back to verify the appointment was still on and the woman I spoke with told me the appointment had been cancelled because they didn't think they'd be able to do the job in the time frame we had talked about. When asked why she didn't contact us to know this she simply said she had forgot. It sounded to me that they were just not interested in our job because it may have been a little smaller than some other jobs they have done.

Erik worked well with us & the designer. We employed this company after they helped with the design & cost planning process. The finished laundry center is very well done. It was an easy process for us & they consulted us when necessary, often on a daily basis. Craftsmen were on time, courteous, hard-working, perfectionistic & friendly. The project was completed within the anticipated time frame. Subbed electric was not as prompt as we would have liked in resolving a problem, but this was not due to any inattention by Community. Creative & patient with trying to execute construction in a tight space that resulted in an extremely functional laundry operation. Some extra work that was very fairly priced by the hour. Cleanup was very good; attentive to owner's allergy problems. Good communication between workers, the company & owners. Certainly not as expensive as some very well known companies on the North Shore! We will hire them again for an addition to our home. They made it easy!
Description of Work: Cost Planning Service. We used Erik Lindberg, general contractor & owner of the company, as a consultant during our work with a designer to plan our laundry center, closets & dormer bathroom addition. He attended design meetings & provided logistical input so that we could work realistically within our budget. He had many creative suggestions for high quality construction, efficient use of materials & labor & a practical roadmap to achieve the period look we wanted. Though Erik is not formally educated as a designer or architect, his extensive experience with building, restoration & remodeling makes him ideally suited to help the homeowner & designer keep a sharp eye on costs without sacrificing quality. They then did demolition of 2-2nd floor closets to create a laundry center; created &/or subbed framing, electric, plumbing, dry wall, carpentry, tile, shelving, custom ironing & folding center; advised on lighting & spacing requirements. Work did not include painting/plastering.

CREDIT FOR THE SUCCESS OF THIS JOB SHOULD, AS ALWAYS, BE SHARED WITH THE CUSTOMER. A GOOD REMODELING JOB IS A COLLABORATIVE PROCESS AND DEPENDS ON THE QUALITY OF THE RELATIONSHIP AND COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CONTRACTOR AND CUSTOMER. GOOD WORK THRIVES IN THE FERTILE GROUND OF GOOD COMMUNICATION!
