Response from BIG DAVE'S SERVICES
I received a service request in Angie's List category of Handyman from the member above on 4/17 that stated as follows "Fascia board on south side of house ripped by wind storm" Because I was out on job sites that day, I was not able to respond right away, but sent the following message to the member the following morning 4/18 "Hi [Member Name Removed]- Thanks for choosing to contact us via Angie's List. I would love to talk with you about finishing the project list you have to do, however, we don't do fascia repair or installation projects. We specialize in kitchen and bathroom remodeling and repairs, and limit our work to larger mid grade to upscale interior residential remodeling projects only. My suggestion is that you seek out a siding contractor or a carpenter contractor who specializes in this kind of work. Besides Angie's List, Milwaukee NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) might be a resource for you. Thanks again for contacting us. Dave" The message above was my only contact with this member, and was sent to her via the Angie's List messaging platform. Imagine my surprise when I saw a grade of "F" from this member in the Bathtub Refinishing & Liners category at Angie's List. First, we don't offer exterior repair services, so it's not that we can't do the requested repair, but the service she requested is not one that we offer. Not every handyman service, home improvement contractor or other service provider offers every conceivable service an Angie's List member may want. We simply don't do exterior work. Secondly, I don't understand the connection between a fascia repair job and leaving an awful review in a totally unrelated category when all we did was respond to a request for service declining the work because we don't offer what she was looking for. In my opinion, this is a totally unfair review, and I have asked Angie's List to remove it from my profile. If this review remains visible, I will let you be the judge of its validity.

Description of Work: Dave came out to look at a small job I had but then never followed up. I assume my job was too small for him

Response from BIG DAVE'S SERVICES
It took me a while to go through our archives, but I did find records of our meeting almost 2 years ago and subsequent e-mail conversations. The dates you reported in this posting indicated January 2014 as the job date. We met in the morning of 11/14/13 to discuss the damaged done by your dog to your living room trim boards, and I did ask you to email me so we could discuss your project via email. On the next day, 11/15/13, you sent the following message to me: "Hi Dave: Here is my email address so we can stay in touch concerning the trim replacement job we talked about. thanks" And I responded on 11/16/13, with the following message: "Hi [member name removed]- Thanks for providing your e-mail address. I'll be in touch mid to end of next week and bring you samples of the pre-finished trim boards for your approval. We're just finishing a big job over the next few days, and will work in your project as soon as I can get one of the guys free for a few hours to do your repair. Thanks again for choosing us. We look forward to working with you. Dave" And you responded the same day with this message: "sounds good. I will await your call" I found I phoned you on 11/22/13 in an attempt to schedule a meeting to bring you samples for your selection, but only reached voice mail. I left a message to return my call, but I don’t have any record that you ever responded. It was the Friday before Thanksgiving, and I thought you were perhaps out of town for the upcoming holiday. Communication is a two way street. It isn’t our practice to repeatedly contact a potential client to the point of pestering them for returning a call or setting up an appointment. When you didn’t respond, I assumed you had decided either to delay the project or had found someone else to do it for you. It wasn’t that we didn’t want to do your job or that the work was too small for us to consider. We simply moved on to others who returned messages from us and scheduled with us in a reasonably prompt fashion. Waiting almost 2 years to complain about us in your post for supposedly not responding to you is not reasonably prompt nor fair. Our communications with you clearly left the ball in your court. I hope you found someone to complete your repairs on your schedule and your terms.

Description of Work: We only got his estimate, He had it so detailed, right down to how many saw blades he would use. He would not get rid of the ceiling tiles removed and said it would take eight hours. My husband and I removed the ceiling tiles and took what we removed to the dump. We did it in 5 hours complete. I am 76 yrs old. I don't think Dave really wanted to do the removal. So I did not hire Dave.

Response from BIG DAVE'S SERVICES
I had to search through the archives to find this estimate, which we provided to you via e-mail on July 24, 2014...nearly a year ago. On a job such as the one you wished to have us estimate, there is a significant amount of debris that needs to be removed. We are not in the debris removal business but do arrange to have local waste companies deliver construction debris dumpsters for the jobs requiring significant debris removal. We discussed the costs of debris removal at the time we met. Our notes indicate that you did not wish to have the cost of a dumpster on site included in the quote, so we provided the quote as you requested...bagging the debris for you to haul to the dump. Here is the text of the e-mail outlining our estimate: Hi (member name removed)- Thanks so much for inviting me to your home to talk about the ceiling removal in the basement. Based on our discussion, it would appear the job would take one of my technicians between 5-7 hours to complete the work for you. On something like this job, I would provide the work on a time plus materials basis with the understanding that we would not exceed the maximum number of hours billed in the estimate, but will bill actual time and materials consumed for this work if it would be less time than estimated. We'd have about $25 in saw blades, garbage bags and the like for materials therefore the total estimated charges would run between $XXX.00 and $XXX.00. Our hourly rate is $XX.00. We would bag the small debris for you in manageable heavy duty garbage bags and cut the ceiling pieces into approx 2 ft x 2 ft pieces for you to haul to the dump, taking all the debris out of the basement to your back yard or garage as you would direct us. We'll also pull the nails that previously held up the ceiling from the joists and bag them for removal. If you'd like to take the next step, I can schedule a technician for you early to mid next week at the soonest. Please let me know how or if you wish to proceed. You responded the same day with the following: Hello Dave, Thank you for being so prompt with your estimate. (member name removed) and I are getting a few more estimates. I will be in touch. Thank you again, (member name removed) That was the last I heard from you until you posted your report and grade today, almost 11 months after we had met and I had provided your estimate. I guess I don't fully understand your reasoning for such a low grade when we provided exactly what you had requested in our estimate. If there was a misunderstanding, I wish you would have contacted me sooner so we could have adjusted accordingly. I didn't see anything in your e-mail response that indicated you had questions or misunderstood. It appeared to me that you were still shopping for a service provider and that you would get back to me if you wished to schedule us to do the work for you. That request for us to do the work never came, and it appears you chose to do the work yourselves.

Perhaps you have me confused with someone else. I do recall a phone conversation we had regarding some major plumbing work and garage door repair/replacement, and I did refer you on to specialist trade contractors who offer those kinds of services. Based on our initial and only phone conversation, I declined to make an appointment with you to view the site and to prepare and estimate, but rather encouraged you to contact specialists offering the services you needed. At no time did I offer an estimate to you in any amount, as there was nothing in your list of tasks we would personally perform. Not every contractor or service provider offers every single conceivable service that one would possibly need. We don't do garage door replacements or repairs or major plumbing work with in house personnel. Basing a grade on non-factual information or because we don't offer a particular service is unfair at best.

I have nothing good to say about Big Dave. He came out and I gave him a list of 8 things to be done, and he sent me an estimate back in 9 days on only two things. I asked why he wasn't writing them down and he said he "had it all up here." The contractor I had working at my house at the time said to me after he left that he doesn't know code. Bid Dave doesn't know anything about code.

Response from BIG DAVE'S SERVICES
It's unfortunate the member's report of work she had asked me to quote is posted here. She did not hire me to do any of the work, as she stated my estimate was considerably higher than the others she asked to price the work. My quotes included all the necessary pricing for permits and code compliance, including work that would be sub contracted to licensed trades professionals like plumbers and electricians. The report is misleading in that it states the work was not done and that the same work was completed on March 17. The report also stated that she would not rehire me. SHE NEVER HIRED ME IN THE FIRST PLACE. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW I AM TIED TO WORK SHE SAID WAS NOT DONE BUT COMPLETED ON MARCH 17. In our initial meeting, I stated that we were on other jobs and could not possibly begin her work until those jobs were completed...approx a month from the time of our meeting. She indicated the work she had needed to be done prior to that timeline. Our policy is to complete one job before we move on to another, and that we take the jobs in the order they were booked. This member's job would have been 4th in line after we completed several multi-day jobs ahead of her. She indicated that she didn't want to wait that long, and we ended the meeting. She stated she had others coming to review the work and would call me if no one else could meet her timeline. I took that to mean I was no longer in consideration for the work. About a week later she called wondering where her estimate was and if my timeline had changed. Because she had stated her deadline was too soon for us, I was surprised to hear from her again. Our work load had the same timeline, and I returned an estimate for the work within 48 hours. I later heard from her that our estimate was too high. Now I see this report, and how misleading it is. For those others I have actually worked for, my reports are 100% A level work. I would urge members to look past this report and view the reports where work was actually performed by my company and/or under my direction. I'm don't pretend to know what this member is attempting to accomplish with this report. I was never hired by her. I would urge Angie's list to remove it from my record. Dave

My husband and I tried unsuccessfully to fix a leaky faucet, leaving us unable to turn the water supply back on for the whole house. I called Dave at 5:15 -- after business hours -- and he was willing to rush right over. He arrived around 6, fixed the leak, and had our water running again by 6:45. He didn't even charge us extra for the emergency call. I could not have asked for better service.
